100mm macro L problems?

Hi, I wonder if anybody could help me out, I recently purchased the canon 100mm macro l to replace my sigma 50mm macro so i'm no stranger to the ultra thin d.o.f you can get from a macro. However, I took a few shots out of the window and the right hand side seemed to be a little soft, especially the bottom corner. Anyway, I put this down to the d.o.f and a few days later took a few more snap shots and noticed the bottom right was a bit blurred again so I did some amazing brick wall [and fence] shots to try and test it out and most of them came away ok, corner sharpness seemed to fall off a little on the right but nothing too drastic. Then I took this shot [attached], the bottom left seems fine but move over the the right and the blur appears. If this was due to d.o.f we'd be seeing a blurred band across the bottom right? I took this from roughly 40/50 foot away so there was more d.o.f than an extreme close up but I was shooting wide open at 2.8. Anyone have any thoughts? I could post a few more samples? I feel like I'm 70% sure that there's a problem with the lens but the d.o.f is going to be pretty slim even at long distances so it makes it difficult to be sure of anything. Thanks

Manual focus

I'm toying with the idea of purchasing some MF lenses, but I need to clear some questions before I proceed. I almost never do fast pace sport photography, but portraits of people in motion (i.e., children) is a desired use, so reasonable focus speed is somewhat of an issue.

I find contrast detection AF unacceptable, so if I understand correctly, I'm bound to use a split screen or some other prism that assists with manually assessing focus.
It is also my understanding that said prisms do not work with lenses that have a maximum aperture of f/8.0 or worse, which is not a concern because such lenses are out of scope for me right now.

However, the question I have is the following. Will I be able to use a fast lens (say f/2.8) set to f/8.0 or narrower with a prism, or will that go black as well?

Besides this, is there any other wisdom that people with experience with MF lenses would like to share?

Talk Me Out Or Into It Please - 200mm F2L

Been mulling over it for several years now and have always talked myself off the ledge. Key facts:

- Serious hobbyist/don't like shooting for money
- love 200mm FL
- primary subjects are my two children (2 and 8)
- already had the 135/loved but sold
- had the 100 but didn't use it enough/sold
- currently still have the 85II, 70-200II and Fuji rig with 85/1.2 equiv.
- All three mentioned above get regular usage

Will I honestly notice the magic over the things I already have? lol

I'm sure I'm not the first person to post or ask about this thing. But I'm on the ledge again (and probably the closest I've been) to pulling the trigger....and soon.

With Canon's recent announcements of the C300II and XC10 I'm wondering just how many folk are interested in 4K.

Best sellers around the world

Looking at Amazon's best selling items gives an idea of market trends.
In Italy the EF 50mm F/1.8 is usually the best selling lens, but the present ranking is:
1 Canon EF-S 10-18mm STM @ 238 Eur
2 Canon EF50mm F/1.8 @ 99 Eur
3 Canon EF-S 55-250mm STM @ 198 Eur
4 Tamron 70-300 F/4-5.6 Di VC (Canon) @ 309 Eur
5 Tamron 70-300 F/4-5.6 Di (Nikon) @ 110 Eur
6 Tamron 18-200 Di Macro (Canon) @ 155 Eur
7 Nikon AF-S DX 55-200mm VR @ 149 Eur
8 Nikon AF-S DX 35mm F/1.8 @ 200 Eur
9 Sigma 35mm F/1.4 A (Canon) @ 706 Eur
10 Canon EF-S 24mm F/2.8 STM @ 168 Eur

The present ranking doesn't seem affected by specific sales / cashbacks etc (and of course excludes all the kit lenses).

I don't remember seeing an expensive (relatively speaking) third part lenses in the top ten.
How is the rest of the world going? Are there other "official" sources besides Amazon.com, .de, .co.uk etc?

EOS 5D Mark IV To Use EOS C300 Mark II Technology? [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that the upcoming Canon EOS 5D Mark IV sensor will employ the same dual-channel readout as the EOS C300 Mark II.</p>
<p>The source says:</p>
<blockquote><p>… this essentially works as a hardware implementation of what the Magic Lantern guys did with software, and actually takes it a bit further.</p></blockquote>
<p>There has been no real confirmation that the EOS 5D Mark IV will shoot 4K video like the EOS C300 Mark II. Although, a lot of people almost expect it to be able to.</p>
<p>An announcement for the EOS 5D Mark IV is not expected until late summer at the earliest.</p>

Photographs that reveal the true beauty of tears.

At the moment I'm working on a new project "imaginarium of tears" and im quite curious about the feedback of the Canon Rumors forum members. I picked this sub forum because macro is just one step away from micro. Your appreciation or feedback might help me to get to the next level in this project and understand and try out new things within this project.

In the last weeks I took 14 images of tears (mainly from crying while cutting unions) from 14 different persons.
All images are taken with a Canon 5D MK III and are shot as panorama's under a 40x enlargement that I achieved by using a microscope. The total original image is around 50MP.

Highlights showing up as pink on 7dii

I've been using a 7dii for a while now and while I am very happy with its performance I have noticed an issue with highlights showing up pink during post-processing in Aperture... have I got a duff camera or is it a software issue with Aperture (my 40d shots never had any pink in them)

I have attached a before and after shot showing the pink on the glass and roof of the car

Canon Products Selected for Esteemed Technical Image Press Association Awards for 21st Consecutive Y

HTML:
TOKYO, April 9, 2015—Canon camera products were honored with four “Best Photo and Imaging Product” awards by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), representing 27 photo and imaging magazines from 16 countries across five continents. The award-winning products are: the EOS 7D Mark II digital SLR camera, the IXUS 160 (PowerShot ELPH 160 in the Americas) / IXUS 1651 / IXUS 170 (PowerShot ELPH 170 IS) digital compact cameras, the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM super-telephoto zoom lens, and the EF11-24mm f/4L USM ultra-wide-angle zoom lens. This year marks Canon’s 21st consecutive year as a TIPA award recipient.2</p>
<p><strong>Best DSLR Expert: EOS 7D Mark II</strong>

Selected for this year’s “Best DSLR Expert” award, Canon’s APS-C-size flagship-model EOS 7D Mark II offers impressive specifications that, according to the TIPA jury, “appeal to photographers who know what a DSLR is capable of delivering.” The camera is equipped with an approximately 20.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and Canon’s Dual DIGIC 6 image processors, all housed within a weather- and dust-resistant magnesium alloy body. In addition to realizing a fast continuous shooting speed of 10 frames per second, the EOS 7D Mark II employs a 65-point (all cross type) AF system and viewfinder providing an approximately 100 percent field of view. The jury highlighted such “exciting” features as HDR (High Dynamic Range)3 and Multiple Exposure4 modes, as well as an intervalometer and a bulb timer for long exposure capture. Furthermore, the camera incorporates dual card slots for both SD and CF cards, is capable of capturing smooth, highly responsive Full HD video thanks to its Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, and is equipped with a dedicated stereo microphone and built-in headphone jack ports.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>Best Easy Compact Camera: IXUS 160 / IXUS 165 / IXUS 170</strong>

With the introduction of the IXUS 160, IXUS 165 and IXUS 170, the TIPA judges said, “Canon has gone against the tide that supposedly swept away the possibility of new and exciting entrants in [the compact] camera category.” Named “Best Easy Compact Camera,” the three “compact and very affordable” IXUS-series cameras provide both “long-range optical zoom and stunning image quality,” features that, according to the jury, camera phones lack. In particular, the IXUS 170 was recognized for being an “exceptionally slim camera … with a very long-range [12x] optical zoom,” and for employing an approximately 20.0-megapixel image sensor and Intelligent IS, an optical image stabilization system that analyzes camera movement and applies the optimal correction method for shake-free stills and 720p HD video. The judges noted that “users can rely on the Smart AUTO mode,” a function that automatically chooses the optimal camera settings based on the scene being captured. The IXUS 165 also comes with Intelligent IS, while both the IXUS 165 and IXUS 160 each incorporate a 20.0-megapixel image sensor and an 8x optical zoom lens.</p>
<p><strong>Best Expert DSLR Zoom Lens: EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM</strong>

Winner of the “Best Expert DSLR Zoom Lens” award, the Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM was designed for full-frame SLR cameras, but is “equally beneficial” for APS-C digital SLR camera users who want to gain even more zoom range. In addition to 4-stop image stabilization and a USM (Ultra-Sonic Motor) delivering fast, near-silent AF performance, the lens employs 21 elements in 16 groups, including fluorite and super UD (ultra-low dispersion) lens elements, making possible “high image quality across the frame.” Furthermore, Canon’s ASC (Air Sphere Coating) technology offers advanced anti-reflective properties to achieve reduced ghosting and flares, while the lens’s nine-bladed circular aperture enables background blur that, according to the TIPA jury, is “smooth” and “impressive.” The judges also focused on the lens’s rear focusing design, with a floating element that “enhances AF speed and ensures uniformity in image quality at all focusing distances.” Other features mentioned by the TIPA jury include the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM’s adjustment ring, which enables users to fine-tune the zoom ring’s torque based on user preferences, and an independent-construction tripod mount that can be detached even while the lens is attached to a camera.</p>
<p><strong>Best Professional DSLR Lens: EF 11-24mm f/4L USM</strong>

Earning TIPA’s “Best Professional DSLR Lens” title, the EF11-24mm f/4L USM ultra-wide-angle zoom lens provides users with access to the “widest angle of view5 yet achieved for a rectilinear full-frame DSLR zoom lens.” In addition to boasting an impressive minimum focal length of 11 mm, the lens makes possible “minimally distorted images throughout its range.” It employs 16 lens elements in 11 groups, and incorporates four aspherical lens elements that help “minimize distortion from the center to the frame edge,” as well as an optical array that “provides straight lines with minimal curvature throughout the entire [zoom] range.” The lens also features super UD and UD lens elements that, according to the TIPA jury, “significantly reduce chromatic aberration,” as well as Canon’s SWC coating to reduce flare and ghosting. The EF11-24mm f/4L USM offers a body design that is “well sealed for dust and water resistance,” and allows for manual focusing even when in AF mode.</p>
<p><strong>About the TIPA Awards</strong>

Held every year since 1991, the TIPA Awards recognize the best photo and imaging products announced during the previous 12 months based on such criteria as innovativeness, use of leading-edge technologies, design, and ease of use. In 1992, Canon took home its first TIPA accolade for the EOS 100 SLR camera and, over 23 separate occasions since then, has been honored with TIPA awards for a total of 73 products and technologies.2</p>

New Camera - Canon 6D markii or 5D mark iv

There is the rumor that Sony will be announcing the new A7RII around Mid May. Mind you it is just a rumor but then I noticed that they seemed to drop some hints of their new bodies earlier before they expedite the official releases. When is Canon going to at least indicate some excitement for those who have been waiting for some news for the new bodies.... ? :-\

Loose ring on 70-200 2.8 IS II

Hi,
my 70-200 2.8 IS II become loose around the zoom ring as in the photo attached, the gap is not much around 0.5-1 mm, but nevertheless pretty annoying.
I brought the lens to CPS Germany and they asked me 700€ for the repair (supposedly they have to change the AF ring) and they say this kind of repair is not covered by warranty.
Now the lens seem to be ok optically, I didn't notice any performance degradation in image quality nor in AF, so I'm a bit reluctant to spend all that money.
Did anybody had a similar experience?
It's the third lens I had repaired at CPS and strangely the cost of the repair was always 1/3 of the original price no matter what, I'm starting being suspicious.
Thanks for your help,
Vittorio

Is a 85mm f1.4 needed?

Currently I use my 100L on my 6D as my portrait lens. I don't primarily shoot portraits but I'm getting more and more into them which is why I'm considering getting another lens I could dedicate to portraits. My main choice would be the Sigma 85mm f1.4 EX due to its price and IQ (if Canon are to release an updated 85mm f18 then that will be another story).

Now I know comparing the 135mm to the 100L you would definitely get a more shallow DOF for full body portraits, but would the 85mm f1.4 have that much of an advantage over the 100L assuming the objects in the background are at infinity? I know there is slightly less compression with the 85 so in situations where the background is closer, the 85 can have a more shallow DOF. I have used dofsimulator.net to compare the two but would just like some other opinions.

I love the images the 100L can produce when it comes to half body or headshots, but I want something that is more suited to full body shots wide open (with the 85 I could work in tighter spaces too).

2015 Monaco GP Lens Help Please

I am going to the Monaco GP this year & have been told we have seats in grandstand K, but not yet seat number.
I have a 5dIII with the following lenses:
Canon 16-35 2.8L II
Tamron 24-70 2.8 IS
Canon 70-200 2.8L IS II
Canon 70-300L

Which lenses would you recommend for the day and are there any limitations on what you can take into the circuit?

We are touring France for 4 weeks & on a 5 night Azamara cruise which incorporates the ship berthing in Monaco for the day of the GP.

Any advice appreciated, including camera settings for the day.

Samyang 14mm F2.8 with Auto Aperture for Canon

Hello,

found this at http://www.syopt.com/en/camera/photo-lenses-14mm-F2.8-ED-AS-IF-UMC.php

"An aperture control motor and CPU chip is installed within 14mm F2.8 ED AS IF UMC Canon AE lens to assist Auto Exposure(AE) for Canon cameras. The aperture can be controlled from camera body thanks to the motor and chip. Also the appropriate focus is guided with indicator light."

Thought it was intersting. No more gluing a Chip to the lens for focus confirmation and you get your EXIF data as well.

Long telephotos

Hi all,

So a day that I never thought would come might actually be approaching this year. Specifically, that's the day I might actually be able to splurge on one of the big whites :o But just one. And only the handholdable ones...

We're talking the $5K-7K price range, which narrows it to 3, essentially. Specifically I am asking for those who own a 200f2, a 300 2.8 (version 2) or the new 400 DO to shed some thoughts on their experiences.

I am leaning towards the new 400 DO - although I do have the 100-400 already, the 400 f4 with a 1.4x yields a 560 5.6 which puts it right in animal/bird territory. 300 on crop is just starting to approach that sweet spot, but 400 would be even better. And with 560 I could even use the 5D3.

The other option I'm considering is the 200 f2 IS. Poorly lit ice skating shows push me in that direction - one show I just squeaked by with 135 f2 and 7D (original, now have Mark II)...200 with a 5D3 would be an additional stop (through ISO) to work with...I cap the 7D at 3200. Still, rumblings of a version II - and potential resale difficulty - have me a bit hesitant.

As for the 300 2.8, I probably have the least need for that focal length - the 100-400 covers it nicely and I've also got a 70-300 (which may get sold)...and indoors, more likely to grab a 70-200 2.8 - still, it's in the same price range and the IQ seems to be astounding - with a 1.4x it becomes a 420 f4 and difference seems minuscule between that and the bare 400 f4...but seems like the 400+1.4 is superior to the 300+2.0 according to TDP.

Anyone with these lenses - specifically the 400 DO II, seems to be rare - chime in with their experiences? It could help me out. Remember, I'm looking for something I can handhold...

Thanks!
