<p>The fast lens would be very welcomed in the PowerShot line, so I suspect the camera will be a bit bigger if these specs are the real deal. We’ve seen most of these specs multiple times, we’re just waiting for the announcement.</p>

Canon 5DSR or 5DS for serious macro?

Hey Folks!

Which is the better choice for insect macro photography? Stacked shots and such. I'm asking since I can't really find a reference on the Nikon 800E-s if that struggles with moire on the fine structured skin of an insect, I hope you get my dilemma. I would surely buy the 5DSR for the better details, tho I'm interested in your opinion if that would be a bottleneck on the moire side during my application.

My current gear is a 6D and Zeiss100MP, tripod, lights. I'm into this stuff all the way, so I eagerly wait for your responses on which to prepurchase. Thanks in advance!

EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II Replacement [CR1]

We reported previously that the next “L” lens from Canon would be a prime. We don’t know the focal length, but the 35mm f/1.4 is the likeliest candidate for replacement.</p>
<p>Canon hasn’t released an f/2.8 zoom since the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II, but that could be changing some time in the next year. We’re told An f/2.8 replacement for the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II is likely and that the focal length could change slightly, something like an EF 15-35 f/2.8L was suggested.</p>
<p>If you look at the lineage of the current lens, it has changed focal lengths a couple of times. The first in the line was the EF 20-35 f/2.8L and then the EF 17-35 f/2.8L and most recently two version of the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L</p>
<p>Event photographers still crave the fastest lens possible for the job, and the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II could use a performance refresh.</p>
<p>I don’t expect such a lens to arrive any time soon, as the manufacturing demands of the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II and EF 11-24 f/4L probably won’t be quelled for quite some time yet.</p>

Need lens advice mostly for landscape

I would like some help in deciding which lens to purchase next. I am an enthusiast who shoots mostly landscape/nature and travel (6D). I don't shoot indoors or portraits much and use a tripod much of the time and weight is a consideration. The main lenses I use are the 16-35 f4 and the 70-300L and they are always in my backpack. I recently sold my 24-105L as I have hardly used it since getting the 16-35 f4 and have a budget of around $2K.

I thought I would need something to fill the gap so I rented the 24-70 2.8 II but quickly realized I wasn't going to get the most out of this lens for what I shoot and think my money could be spent better elsewhere. 50-70mm is kind of no mans land for me so the gap seems manageable, especially if I throw the 40mm in the bag. I thought about selling the 70-300L for the 100-400 II for the reach but then I have a bigger gap/more weight and I love the 70-300L for the size and I can borrow the wife's SL1 to extend it if need be.

I don't have much faster than f4 so I am thinking a couple primes for creativity might be the most useful. The 100L macro seems like the next logical step and a very fun/versatile lens. I am thinking also the 35 f2. Sharpness is important but not sure the weight of the Sigma 35 Art is worth it. Is 35 too redundant and maybe I should consider something else? Filter capacity is needed.

Any other ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Import 1Dx worth the risk?

I'm finding the recent 1Dx price drops to be very tempting, especially on imports from places like GetItDigital. CanonPriceWatch currently shows a low price of $4500 for apparent import models and the best authorized dealer price (via the CPW Street Price) is $5400. Is it worth the $900 to stay with an authorized dealer?

I understand that during the first year, warranty would be through the dealer and not Canon. Based on past experience, I tend to think it's a safe bet that I won't need either. What about after the warranty period? Is there any truth that Canon USA won't service it at all?

Is there anything different with the import model versus the USA model? What about included items like the charger? Do imports come with the same charger?

Anyone have experience buying import 1Dx's from GetItDigital?

For what it's worth, I have seriously considered the 7D2. But, I shoot a lot of sports in poorly lit gyms and ice arenas -- including figure skating ice shows. I live between ISO 3200 and 6400. I'm currently using a 5D3 and love the high ISO performance. I have also had very good results as a sports body. But, there are limits with FPS, buffer, and focus tracking that I occasionally challenge. While the 7D2 is tempting, the extra benefit of the high ISO noise performance with the 1Dx and the extra 2 FPS could make a big difference in upping the bar for me with action shots.

Lens cleaning fluid & cloths recommendation?

I was trying to clean a lens today, and while it superficially looks clean, shining a light on the surface reveals what looks like smudges. It was getting very annoying.

I think my cloth has absorbed my skin oil and is depositing it on the surface of the lens now, defeating my efforts.

I was reading the B&H catalog cleaning section and it really opened my eyes to how much stuff is out there.

I'm looking for a good quality fluid (what I use now doesn't seem to be 100% alcohol) and good soft lint-free optical quality cloths (I'm going to try to buy a bunch this time, should keep me going for a few years). Maybe tissues too (Rosco or Kimwipes maybe?). I sometimes use tissues, sometimes when I'm just removing a fingerprint or something I skip this step.

Last, a better brush would be nice. The one I use is sort of crummy. I hear camel hair is the standard.

If there's something else I should also use, feel free to recommend it. Like fluid saturated wipes, I know nothing about these.


You guys have recommendations for good stuff? Is wood grain alcohol based fluid preferable to isopropyl alcohol based fluid?

Basically recommendations from each category (fluid, cloth, tissues, brush) would be useful. I know some of you use eye glass fluid and wipes. I'm looking more for products intended for camera lenses. It's a peace of mind thing.

Best place to sell gear?

Well, it looks as though the 5D mkIII price is really dropping and most everything I have read about it (reviews and this forum and a pro friend) is extremely positive. I've decided it is time to sell all my EFS lenses and my T5i that I've almost never used. That's all going to KEH, and the quote I got is comparable to what I have seen the Camera and lenses selling for on Ebay.

I'm even going to sell my EF 400mm f/5.6L to help me get the 5D MKIII, but I refuse to sell it for the initial online quote price that KEH offered ($635). That's just not enough for me. I see them getting actual bids on Ebay for up to $900 and mine is in mint condition and only about a year old. To be honest I love the lens, but If KEH quoted $800 it would be in the box and on its way because I want the EF 400mm f/2.8 mkII in another year or so anyway.

Has anyone else sold one of these lenses recently or know of a good way to sell it and get a decent price? I'm not faulting KEH on their quote. They probably have a warehouse full of used lenses they have to store. I just think I can do better than $635.

I've never sold any gear, so I am open to suggestions. Thanks!

Shooting a 5DSR in M RAW Vs 5D MK III

Hi All,

First post here so please go lightly and forgive any technical incompetence on my part.
I've been a photographer for some 40 years but only recently moved into the digital realm and found it refreshed the creative joy I used to feel all those years ago.

Landscape photography is my main thing but I also shoot wildlife (deer, foxes etc) and the occasional portrait. So far I've been using a crop sensor Canon 650D with the intention to move to FF and have already invested in some EF glass in readiness (L24-70 f2.8ii, L70-200 f2.8, older L100-400 f4.5).

Image quality (lower noise) is the main reason for looking to move to FF and the 5D III has been on my shortlist for some time (despite shooting mainly landscape I don't feel the AF system on the 6D offers me enough scope for other subjects) BUT the new 5DSR has thrown me, as it seems to offer everything I could ever need for landscape plus newer features that would suit other subjects (better tracking and the option for 1.6 crop when needed for greater reach).

My question is: If chose the 5DSR and I used the full fat 50MP just for landscape but chose to use one of my custom settings for wildlife and used the 5DSR on M RAW (28MP) how would you expect the noise to compare with the 5D III set to RAW (22MP)?

I should say, most of my landscape shots are low ISO and my wildlife ones are rarely above 6400 but I sometimes have to crop them more, so noise becomes an issue.

I'd welcome some technical insight into how the two cameras/settings might compare.

Lenses to Washington DC?

Taking a trip down to Washington DC for Easter Weekend...Cherry Blossoms!!!

I have a 5D III and a G1X (wife will be manning/womanning?).

I have a... 16-35mm/4 IS, 24-70mm/2.8 I, sigma 50mm/1.4, 70-200mmf/4 IS, 100mm/2.8 non IS, and a 300f/4 IS.

I am definitely taking the 16-35mm/4 and the 300mm/4. I figured wide angle for most of the time, since most of the attractions/scenery are up close. The 300mm is specifically for the zoo, which I hear is great and am looking forward to.

Any and all advice and recommendations are appreciated.

Canon Universal IS Unit

Would this be the ultimate dream accessory, or what?

Feasible? Who knows? But I think it is "possible". The IS Unit would receive specific info from the mounted lens and then make IS adjustments peculiar to that lens. Light loss? Probably some, perhaps 1/4 stop? IQ loss? Again, perhaps some, but if it would use fluorite ($$$) and/or UD glass, then it would be minimal. Worth it? As our good friend Surapon has said, "I'd buy 12!"

Question about AI-Servo mode in Canon 7D

I shoot a Canon 7D, mostly static subjects such as dragonflies, spiders, and perched birds. I use back-button AF and typically a single focus point placed as close to the eye of the subject as possible. I am usually handholding or monopod mounted at 200-300 mm with IS lenses and I try to keep shutter speeds roughly equal to or at least ½ my focal length. I am set to high-speed continuous shutter release and AI-Servo. I acquire focus with the back button (AF-ON) and keep the button depressed while I activate the shutter and fire off a burst of 3-4 shots.

When I look at the 3-4 exposures within a burst on the computer monitor, I see subtle differences in focus sharpness. What is happening when the subject is not moving under a single AF point? I assume one possibility is that I am moving the camera slightly from one exposure to the next within a burst. If that is the case, does the camera try to refocus for each exposure within a burst or is it locking exposure when I first depress the AF-ON button and retaining that same focus during the entire burst? If the camera is trying to refocus between shots within a burst, would I be better off using slow speed continuous burst rate to allow it more time to adjust focus?

I think I understand what AI Servo is trying to do when the subject is moving or when there are multiple AF points activated and focus is being handed off from one point to another. It is less clear to me what is happening when I am using a single AF point on a static target. Should I be using AI-Focus mode for this kind of work rather than AI-Servo? Am I making this more complicated than it really is? Thanks for your help.

PS – does your answer also apply to the 7DII, which I hope acquire in a few months?

I do not have Flash 600 EX-RT and ST-E3 RT which use 2.4 GHz RF. to control External New Flash RT system. The QUESTION, Sir, Madam = Do 600 ET RT, 90 EX and ST-E3 RT have Both RF 2.4 GHz and Optical Control in the units to control Old Canon flashes such as 550 EX, 580 EX, 580 EXII-----ETC ?

Canon Disappointment

I need some opinions.

When Canon came up with the 5D Mark III, I made the switch from Nikon to Canon and bought a bunch of Canon gear.
Canon 5d MArk III, CAnon 7D, Canon 580 Ex flash, Canon 430ex Flash, Canon 85 1.2, Canon 135 F2, Canon 100 2.8, Canon 40 2.8, Canon 35 f 1.2, Canon 17-55 F2.8IS.

The Canon 7D was bought in March 2013.
Was mainly intended for back up.
I did not use it much. Maybe less then 500 shutter actuations.
Mainly it sat in weather sealed bag.
In November 2014 we went to Hawaii for vacation and I decided to bring the 7D with the 17-55 for the vacation photos.
When we got there the camera had developed a depression and would not turn on.
I checked it at home , before departure, and only thought the batteries were dead and that was the reason.
Had two batteries, fully charged them both, none would turn the camera on.
I called Canon and they told me to send it in.

They told me that the circuit board is bad and needs to be replaced for $569.
I complained that the camera has barely been used , never dropped, and mainly kept in a sealed bag.
Only left the house twice.
They could check the shutter actuations which should prove that.
The only way this camera could break is if there was something faulty to begin with, and that, in turn, makes it their responsibility.
They said that they checked with their repair people and told me that the camera's circuit board can also stop functioning, if submerged under water.
I told them that it is very easy for them to check if there is water damage and I will guarantee there is none.
That's the first thing they do at an Apple store if you return an Apple phone and it takes them 5 minutes.
I am sure Canon has the same technology.

Then the operator got back on the line and said they will take the $219 off for labor from the repair price but that's the best they can do. Also claimed that cameras break due to condensation. Ended up paying for it because otherwise it would be a paperweight.

Now,.. A camera sold for $1500 by Canon.
A camera that is professional weather sealed.
A camera that was barely used. Around 500 shutter actuations.
A camera that was stored in a professional weather sealed Tamarac bag.
How could it break?


You have to pay for repair costs of $350 reduced as a courtesy from $569.
....For a camera that right now gets sold by BH for $750.
How is that fair?

Forget about the lost memories that were lost by trusting on Canon reliability and the quality of their products.

HOW CAN ANYONE BUY OR RECOMMEND CANON PRODUCTS TO ANYONE THEY DO NOT HATE?

Fare Thee Well 135mm L

I was sad to say good bye to my 135mm L this morning. It was my most used lens for two or three years before I bought my 24-70 MK II and my 70-200mm MK II lenses. Those along with my 5D MK III caused it to sit in my bag for the last year or two, so I finally sold it.

I've been reducing the number of lenses I have for the past 8 months, so I'm down to only five plus two TC's. That's not counting a bunch of old EF consumer lenses laying out in a box in my studio.

I'm tempted to buy one of the wide angle lenses, but I never used my 16-35mm f/2.8L, so I've resisted acquiring more.

11-24 and 16-35 f/4 is

Finally got my hands on the 11-24 and 16-35 f/4 is and to be honest I wish I hadn't.

People have written about the weight of the 11-24, but I fell in love as soon as I held it. The lens just oozes quality and when you take your first shots with it, you have the same reaction as you do when you first shoot the 1D X - just wow! The weight balances perfectly on the 1D X (I did not try it with a different body) and is a joy to use.

I loved everything about the 11-24 (except the price), and once you have played with it for a while, the 16-35 seems like a kit lens. Which of course it isn't, as that too produces amazing results - it's just not in the same league.

So a word of warning, that 11-24 may be pricey but she can steal your heart very easily.
