Review: Samyang 135mm f/2 ED UMC

HTML:
Friend of the site Dustin Abbott has completed his review of the brand new Samyang 135mm f/2 ED UMC manual focus lens. Dustin came away thoroughly impressed with the optics of the $549 Samyang, and thinks it’s better than Canon’s 135mm f/2L in that regard.</p>
<p>As always, the review is a good one with lots of sample images, as well as a video version of the review. As always with Samyang lenses, it comes down to whether or not you’re willing to sacrifice focus aids such as autofocus and focus confirmation (for Canon) for great optics and a lower price.</p>
<blockquote><p>I would be happy to own this lens – no question. The question is whether or not I would choose it over a lens like the Canon 135mm f/2L despite the fact that that the Samyang beats the pants off it optically. As an owner of the 135L, I can’t say that I am personally compelled to make that switch. But if you are in the market for a 135mm f/2 lens and want both better optics and a cheaper price, this lens is worth a very long look. It has the ability to produce images that are amongst the finest possible with this focal length.</p></blockquote>

Redrock Micro To Introduce Auto Focus Tracking System?

HTML:
<p>A new video leaked today showing prototype technology that looks to potentially solve focusing for video. A Commercial and bts from Dustin Poteet – MoVI operator – demonstrates technology from Redrock Micro on a Canon 5D MKII that continuously tracks focus on any subject and between subjects. The prototype seems to use Redrock’s existing microRemote wireless remote focus and microTape sonar rangefinder hooked together. This is billed as a “proof of concept” that is better than Canon’s own dual pixel because it works on any camera and lens, focuses on any type of subject (not just faces), works under any lighting conditions, and has a “very fluid and organic feel to it.”</p>
<p>There were no specifications about the technology in the video, but I suspect we’ll be hearing more about it next month at NAB.</p>

high speed photography - synchronisation of 2 speedlites?

Dear all!

My problem: I want to capture tiny tiny droplets (a few dozens micrometers) of a fluid which are moving quite fast. I know this will be a difficult task, this will be at the limit of the resolution of the lens and the sensor, The droplets could turn out as small as a few pixels in diameter, but I would like to get a rough measure of their size.

My setup: For this I shall take my macro lens (EF-S 60 or MP-E 65, not sure yet) and a 600 speedlite set to 1/128 power in a backlight setup. This will give me roughly a flash duration of 1/40.000 of a second or 25 microseconds. Motion blur should then be limited to some 10-30 pixels (at 1:1 magnification) on the sensor of an EOS 60D. (I expect to get motion-blurred streaks of droplets, then.)

Question: I expect the lighting to be quite weak. If I were to use both of my 600 speedlites via the ST-E3-RT trigger, do you think they would fire in synchronisation? i.e. they would have to fire within some 10 microseconds of one another. Do you think this kind of sync is possible? If they don't, I would get double-images of my droplets.

I fear the sync will not be of the required precision.

thanx for your help and judgement,
Sulla

Would love some feed back

I am all self taught and have loved shooting sports and the other day i had a chance to go to a local college and shoot a lacrosse game. Here are a few images and would love some feedback on them. Don't be scared to be honest because i take it as a way to improve.

Canon Celebrates 12th Straight Year of No.1 Share of Global ILC Market

HTML:
TOKYO, March 26, 2015—Canon Inc. announced today that the Company’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and compact-system cameras) have maintained the No.1 share worldwide in terms of volume within the interchangeable-lens digital camera market for the 12-year period spanning 2003 to 2014.1</p>
<p>Canon develops the key components, namely the CMOS image sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses, employed in its interchangeable-lens cameras. The most advanced of these technologies are incorporated across the Company’s entire product lineup, spanning from professional-use flagship cameras to entry-level models, enabling the Company to maintain the top global share by offering a robust product lineup that effectively responds to the needs of a wide range of users.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>In 2003, the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D Digital in other regions). This groundbreaking camera, which featured a compact, lightweight design and was offered at a competitive price, set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market and enabled the Company to capture the top share of the global market. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch epoch-making new products, including the EOS-1D series of digital SLR cameras targeting professional users, and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording thanks to its full-frame sensor employing a video-capture function.</p>
<p>In October 2014, targeting advanced-amateur users, Canon launched the EOS 7D Mark II, which has garnered high acclaim from the market for its fast continuous shooting speed of 10 frames per second and superior autofocus performance. It is thanks to Canon’s impressive camera lineup, including the EOS 7D Mark II, that the Company has maintained the No. 1 share in the market for 12 years running. Furthermore, in April 2014, Canon celebrated an impressive lens-manufacturing milestone with the production of its 100 millionth EF-series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras. The Company’s extensive EF lens-series lineup, which currently comprises a total of 97 models,2 is one of Canon’s biggest strengths, helping the EOS series to realize a wide spectrum of imaging possibilities and rich visual expression.</p>
<p>Aiming to further strengthen its wide product lineup, Canon introduced five new camera models in February of this year. The new lineup comprises the EOS 5DS and 5DS R, which achieve the world’s highest pixel count among 35 mm full-frame sensor digital SLR cameras,3 the EOS 8000D (EOS Rebel T6s or 760D) and EOS Kiss X8i (EOS Rebel T6i or 750D in other regions) entry-level digital SLR cameras, and the EOS M3 digital compact-system camera, which achieves greatly enhanced AF performance.</p>

Just replaced my aging 7D with a new..... 7D!!!

I bought my 7D for $1550.00 back in 2010. I had upgraded from a 40D to the 7D and I loved it, and still do.

I purchased a 6D a couple of months ago for my full frame needs and my 7D with almost 80K clicks was starting to show some need of attention. First, the mirror assembly is starting to stick some. It lags sometimes returning from taking a photo and just lately the USB port crapped out. I can no longer connect it to my computer.

I had been playing with the idea of sending it in for repair or maybe even buying the new 7D2. I checked B&H and I saw that they still had stock of the 7D (new) and the BG-E7 grip. The prices were unbelievable. I decided against repairing my aging 7 and replaced it with a new 7D and BG-E7 grip from B&H for right around $860.00.

Why? The 7D is still an amazing camera even though some newer technology has replaced some of it's features. It's still very fast, in AF and FPS and the image quality is (in MHO) fantastic. It has done everything I have asked of it over the past 4 years and more.

Now, remember, I don't use my 7D for low-light shooting, that's what my 6D is for. I love the 6D, it's a great little camera with amazing image quality, BUT I still love shooting wildlife and the 7D is still hard to beat.

I know a lot of people are "rushing" out to get the 5D3 and the new 7D2 but the 7D1 is still a great camera. Just my 2 cents.

Post your moon pics as example of your setup

Hi
Ive attached a pic i took of the moon tonight as an example of my 5d mk2 + canon 100-400 mk2 +2x extender mk3
Focal length 800mm
f11
1/15 exposure
On tripod, IS on, mirror lockup on, remote release. Was better with IS on weirdly.

Id love to see other peoples best detailed moon shot and what you used, inc settings and setup, upload a 100% crop so we can compare.
The moon is a good test for comparison because were all looking at the same object, from a similar distance.
Try and get a half crescent moon for the crater shadows to aid contrast and pick a clear night.

What do you think of mine?

Speculation on 5D III vs 5D IV, 1DX vs 1DX II, 5D IV vs 1DX? etc.

It seems like late 2015/2016 will see announcements and (maybe) releases of either the 5D IV and/or 1DX II...

Based on Canon's upgrades on the 5D and 1D series in the past, I'd be curious about a round up of what we know from rumors on this site as well as thoughts from other Canon users about the following:

What is likely to come first, a 5D IV or 1DX II?

If the 5D IV comes before the 1DX II, will the likely advancements in the 5D IV make the current 1DX a much less viable value proposition?

It would seem like a higher FPS and overall speed (and probably more advanced focusing system) and improved ISO capabilities in low light (and a likely bump in resolution) on a 5D IV is a given, putting it much more competitive (and probably in some ways superior) compared with the existing 1DX. If so, would Canon drop the price of the 1DX more (or have a substantial rebate/instant rebate)?

The above makes me think that maybe the announcements would be close or concurrent. Or am I missing something?

Or do those factors make it likely that the 1DX II (or at least announcement thereof) would most certainly precede the announcement of the 5D IV?

The prices of the 5D III and 1DX continue to drop (especially from non-authorized dealers and as a result of exchange rates with other territories)... when each model is ultimately replaced, how long do you think the former model will continue to be available at retail? Or does Canon typically plan well enough that there is not much in channel to last long anyway? What do you think will ultimately be the bottom price for a new at retail 1DX? (I saw one new from a non-dealer on eBay over the weekend for $4,000)? What about the 5D III (which has been going in volume for grey market new copies at around $2,000)?

What do people expect the retail price to be for the 5D IV and 1DX II to be when released?

How soon after do you think the 6D II will be released to hold that "entry level" full frame spot in their line-up?

Is the current price (close to $1,000 street) for the 6D enough of an incentive for Canon to release a follow-up (6D II) around the same time as the 5D IV and 1DX II, at a much higher price (upwards of $2,000), to take away the large gap between the current 6D (around $1,000) and the 5D IV ($3,000-$4,000) and 1DX II ($6,500-$7,500?)?

Do you think a 6D II might adopt the current focus system of the 5D III / 7D II, as presumably the 5D IV and 1DX II will move up to the next level? If so, doesn't that make a 6D II more like the current 5D III, only with Wi-Fi and one SD card (vs 1 compact flash and 1 SD card)?

What are the chances that the 6D II will be nothing more than the existing 5D III with Wi-Fi built-in, just sort of renamed/rebranded at a reduced price? Seems like that would save them a lot on R&D costs.

Do you expect that the 1DX II will continue to feature two compact flash slots? What are the chances that it replace with two (faster) SD card slots, or maybe double up on both card types (two of each, four total) to further differentiate from the 5D IV?

What do you predict the megapixels to be for the 6D II, 5D IV, and 1DX II?

What are the chances of there being multiple variations of the 5D IV (like the 50mp 5Ds series)?

What are the chances that the 1D series will split into more than one type again?

Do you think Canon will continue to have relatively long life spans for each system, or do you think they will follow Sony's lead with annual updates and more variations on the same system (like the A7 series)?

Notice I didn't ask any questions about dynamic range (since it seems like any topic gets taken over by that already).

CPS Platinum Membership Gift

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could share what gift is being provided with Platinum Memberships this year (2015).

I am currently a Silver member and almost qualified for a Platinum membership, so I am debating getting my next piece of glass early and then upgrading to Platinum for the gift. I spoke to customer service and they were unable to divulge what was given this year but he did tell me that in the past it has been a ThinkTank Bag or a ThinkTank laptop sleeve.

Also, perhaps future forum members can post their gifts here for future reference.

Cheers!

Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS Repair Topic

I sent a lens into Canon to check the AF assembly and lens calibration upon purchasing a used lens.

I got the following return disposition:

"Your product has been examined and upon close inspection the exact cause could not be identified but it was found that causing front focus from time to time. Electrical adjustments were carried out on the AF assembly. Product function were confirmed. Adjustments with EOS 1Dx."

Does anyone know exactly what this means? I've just never seen that before. Thanks.

(Getting a straight answer from someone at Canon is not easy either.)

7d mkII - Register/Recall shooting function

Hi,
I am using the Register/Recall shooting function on my C1 which I use for birds in flight.
When a subject moves from the tree line to the sky I have the ae lock set to bump the exposure comp to a predefined amount.
It's great!

Annoyingly you can't seem to have a different set of recall settings for c2 or c3! I think this would be very useful.

Is anyone else using this function?

If so, what for?

Cheers,

N

An 50.6mp EOS-1 Body Being Explored [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that Canon is exploring making an EOS-1 style body with the latest (or variation of) 50.6mp sensor by Canon. “Exploring” doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, and it won’t happen before the EOS-1D X Mark II is announced.</p>
<p>The sales of the EOS 5Ds & EOS 5DS R will ultimately decide if Canon makes a higher priced version of the camera. There’s been people over the years that have never felt the amalgamation of the EOS-1 line was going to last forever. There are ergonomics attached to the EOS-1 bodies that a lot of people have a hard time moving away from.</p>
<p>I would suspect what the pros have to say about the EOS 5Ds will have an influence on whether or not such a camera gets produced.</p>

Review: Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC

HTML:
<p>Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Tamron-15-30mm-f-2.8-Di-VC-USD-Lens.aspx" target="_blank">completed his review</a> of the brand new Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC lens.</p>
<p>Bryan says:</p>
<blockquote><p>For those wanting a full frame ultra-wide angle focal length range (or any focal length under 24mm) with an f/2.8 aperture and image stabilization, there is no other option. Fortunately, that sole option is a good one. The Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC Lens’ introduction raised eyebrows and, with the performance this lens is turning in, those eyebrows remain raised.</p></blockquote>

Old age adventurers 2014 photosafari photos are now being posted

My wife & I continue to spend our pensioner's years in our LC 4x4 with roof top tent in game reserves in Southern Africa. We prefer to go to unfenced camps because of the lonely hours this provides. We are extra careful. But adventures abound. In 2013 a massive lion walked past our camp site. We looked up to see him stroll past at 20m. 2 years later our hearts have stopped pounding. On this last trip Marianne broke bones after stepping in a ground squirrel hole while hanging up washing in Mata Mata camp. However, she continues to love our adventures & egg me on. We returned home in December & after much editing have now started posting on our website. The first photos in our 2014 portfolio in www.africaraw.com are from Kgalagadi. Below are two photos from my ever improving & ever enthusiastic wife.

Cats are the better photogs

Oh my, the net is about to be flooded with another type of pictures: cat- and dog-cams! Maybe birdcams will be next? I have to admit I always found the idea intriguing and would like to have access to a 24/7 horse-cam.
