Advice for an prime lens >400mm for wildlife

Hello!

In the last years I became more and more interested in photography. My favourite is to shoot animals in wildlife and birds (living and bird made out of aluminium).

Recently I use the 100-400mm Canon lens, but I was able to save around 9000Euro to buy an prime lens.
To do this in the right way, I have some questions. Can you please help me?

I am looking for an prime >400mm. So the brandnew Canon 400mm DO IS2 or the Canon 500mm 4.0 II are in my focus.
The 500mm is one kilogram heavier, but has an extra reach of 100mm. Optically , if you read some tests, they seem to be equal.

What is your experience "in the wild"? Which one is better for animals that are far away? Can I use the 500mm "out of the hand" if needed, or is this lens just to be used on an tripod? Or better an 400mm DO IS2 with an extender?

I own 2 tripods, but the more stable one (Manfrotto 055) will need an new head (Manfrotto 288). Which head is right for an combination with the 500mm and an 7D or 6D?

Much obliged!
Thomas

List of Photographers Online Resources

If it hasn't been done before, I'd love people to list links to their favorite online photography resources, whether websites like CR, print places, downloads, trials, reviews, teaching, galleries you like, etc.
And, if you like, perhaps a brief blurb on why you like this link.
We can keep it growing as other stuff comes up, and I can get one of my interns to compile it into a single document.
I love CR, but it is mostly about Canon Equipment, and while I have spend an amount of money I never DREAMED of spending a year ago, I can't keep spending money like that. Need to get into other stuff as well!

I'll start....

Good overall photography site. Covers many topics, reviews, articles, inspiration, galleries, tutorials.

Canon and NAB 2015 in April [CR3]

HTML:
We’re amended some information we’ve posted previously about what to expect from Canon at NAB 2015 in Las Vegas next month. Nothing below is going to change all that much, other than getting more specifications about the products.</p>
<p>CANON EOS C300 MARK II</p>
<p>This will be the star of Canon’s show. It will shoot 4K and you can also expect some minor ergonomic changes. We also think that it’s going to cost more than Sony’s FS7.</p>
<p>CANON EOS C500 MARK II</p>
<p>This is NOT going to be announced at NAB 2015. There’s always the possibility of a development announcement, but don’t expect a product you’re going to be able to purchase soon.</p>
<p>G4H COMPETITOR/FIXED LENS CINEMA EOS</p>
<p>We’ve <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/12/4k-fixed-lens-camcorder-coming-cr2/" target="_blank">reported previously about a fixed lens Cinema EOS</a> style camera, as well as Canon announcing a G4H competitor. We’re now pretty certain that these are in fact the same camera. We were wondering why we hadn’t heard anything about the lens mount for a G4H style camera. As it turns out, the lens is fixed and the camera will share the same shape as the Canon EOS C100 II, just smaller. This will be a 4K product and probably geared towards drones, though we don’t now how much “smaller” it will be compared to the EOS C100 Mark II.</p>

Spring

When you live in a country like Norway (with 9 months of winter and 3 months of poor sledge conditions) you really appreciate the miracle of spring. One of my favourite times is when the hepatica, this tiny, fragile and delicate flower penetrates the layers of dead leaves and rubble on the forrest floor and raise to the sun.

It would be nice to see some of your spring images.

Question about "weather sealing"

Pulled the trigger, got the new (and wonderful) ef 100-400mm f/5.6 IS II.

Even before owning this lens, I've had a question about weather sealing on zoom lenses that have extending zoom barrels.

I think my 24-70mm II is the same--zoom out, the barrel extends.

So...If mist, rain droplets, pollen and other stuff from trees falls on the extension, and then we retract that barrel, what happens to the moisture and particulate matter?

How can Canon claim that a lens is weather proofed/protected/resistant/friendly (???) if rain droplets get drawn back into the lens during normal use? Now I see that we need to keep a dry towel to wipe the barrel each time we extend it in conditions where something is getting on the barrel.

Any insights much appreciated.

Fun with teleconverters

When you look at the TDP site, it seems that all TCs degrade the image. But, Bryan moves the camera further away from the chart to produce the same size image when a TC is attached. What I want to know is what the images are like from the same distance and does the gain in focal length more than compensate for the degradation of image with the lenses and TCs I use. Inspired by my recent purchase of a Kenco Teleplus 300 Pro DG 3xTC and a bright sunny day (the clouds having cleared after the eclipse), I compared the 100-400mm II and 300mm f/2.8 II bare and with Canon 1.4 and 2xTCs and the Kenco on the 7DII. The target was an iso12233 chart 24m away. Focussing was done automatically in liveview. Here is a collage of the centre ring, which is only 12.3 mm across. The unsharpened images are on the left.

At 400mm, only the two broadest of the fine semicircular lines can be resolved. Resolution gradually increases until a focal length of 1800mm is reached by stacking the Canon 2xTC III with the Kenco 3x on the 300/2.8. The stacked TCs at f/17 just about resolve all the lines.

I resized all images to the size produced by the 300/2.8 x 2 combo, on the right. The downsampled image from stacked TCs is the best.

Risk of moire in nature photography with 5DS R?

A question for Neuro or another imaging expert: would moire be a significant problem with the repeating patterns in avian feathers? I understand that it is rare in most natural scenes due to the general absence of repetition in patterns, but feather structure seems like a potential problem.

I am toying with the idea of the 5DS R mostly for landscape b/c I make very large prints on occasion (and could be inspired to do more). I can achieve very high resolutions with panos, but that technique is limiting for moving subjects (waves, leaves, even clouds etc) and results in a lot of post capture fiddling around (not my strength). However, I could see this body being helpful for more pixels on small subjects (birds) when the light is good and lower ISOs achievable. A dual utility would encourage me to pull the trigger.

Thoughts? (Thanks)

Canon Rumors Goes to Scotland

HTML:
I’m heading to Scotland Saturday to hang with <a href="http://www.andybiggs.com/" target="_blank">Andy Biggs</a> and a bunch of other landscape photography nuts for 10 days of shooting the Isles of Skye, Lewis & Harris as well as Cairngorms. This is almost the perfect time to go with the latest lenses Canon has released, especially the EF 11-24 f/4L and EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II. Do I wish an EOS 5DS R was coming with me? Absolutely!</p>
<p>What’s in my bag for this trip?</p>

<p>Why the Zeiss and the 11-24? I’ve shot the Zeiss plenty of times before and until proven otherwise, it’s the best ultra wide angle lens for Canon’s EF mount (apologies to the TS-E 17mm) that I’ve ever used. I will be using the 11-24 a lot as I work away on the review.</p>
<p>As I mentioned earlier, I would love to be taking an EOS 5DS R with me and I almost (GAH!) brought a D810, but the new 11-24 and 100-400 were too good to pass up, not to mention I don’t have a Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 for F mount.</p>
<p>I will also have the pleasure of shooting with a Leica S Type 006 kit on the trip, which should have no trouble fulfilling the desire for more resolution.</p>

Cost efficient printer?

My printer died so I will need to replace it. The reality is for any real printing jobs these past couple of years I have taken projects to my local lab. I estimate that 99% of the work the next printer will see are just text documents, so I am even considering a b/w laser. It would be nice to print 8x10 work prints, but not necessary. And I don't foresee needing any scanning, faxing capabilities.

The printer does not have to be a Canon, my main objective is to find a very cost efficient printer that can go for weeks without printing and not needing to waste a lot of ink fixing any clogging, is this a benefit for getting a laser? If inkjet, are there printers that work better with third party inks? What do you guys recommend for a cheap printer?

thanks, jeff

Could Canon's Next Leap in IQ be a big one?

Hi everyone,

So I have been wondering this for a while, bear with me if im wrong :P I have been reading a lot lately how Canon has not updated its sensor fabrication process which is why we haven't seen much too too much improvement over the years. However to my knowledge, the 7d mark ii gets benefits in IQ from other internal components (i think one of them was reducing readout noise) without updating the sensor fabrication?

So I come to my question: do you think that if Canon continues to increase the ?efficiency? of its systems and then integrate this with the newer sensor fabrication, that Canon would then lead the IQ pack again?

This may make absolutely no sense but I ask because i'm curious,

Thanks,

Jon

Ultra Wide Angle Cinema Lens Coming [CR1]

HTML:
We’re told that Canon will announce at least one new Cinema lens at NAB in April. It will be an ultra wide angle zoom, while focal length is unknown, it will have an aperture of t/3.5, “lowering the cost compared to its t/2.8 cousins”, which makes it sound like it’ll be compact zoom, as the standard wide angle cinema zooms are t/2.6.</p>
<p>We expect a lot more about NAB in the coming weeks as the show gets closer.</p>
<p>For the moment, we can confirm a Cinema EOS C300 Mark II which will record in 4K, as well as a Cinema EOS C500 Mark II coming to Las Vegas next month. We’ve also heard there is going to be a shoulder solution for the Cinema EOS bodies, which sounds like an accessory pack and not a shoulder designed Cinema EOS body. Although, we’ve heard such a camera is in the works.</p>
<p>On the consumer end of the spectrum, we will see a 4K G4H competitor.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

Review: Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC

HTML:
LensTip.com has completed their review of the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD lens. They compared it directly to the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 and the Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8L II and came away extremely impressed by the Tamron.</p>
<p>In case you’re wondering, early comparisons between the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC and Canon EF 11-24 f/4L have been pretty close optically, although there is a big difference at the wide end in focal length as well distortion control in the Canon’s favour. However, for $1199, it looks like Tamron has a winner on their hands and they’ll probably sell a ton of them.</p>
<blockquote><p>When it comes to the duel with the Canon EF 16–35 mm f/2.8L USM II the Tamron wins hands down. The Canon was able to compete successfully only in the frame centre, on the edge of the frame it was definitely worse. Still it is possible to use filters with it, a quite important asset in this class of parameters.</p>
<p>To sum up the boasting of Tamron about the superior quality of their new lens proved to be true. The company managed to present a device which compares favourably with its rivals, is cheaper, has optical stabilization and a 5-year warranty period – it would be difficult not to recommend it. Independent producers have been proving for some time that they are no longer specializing in cheap equivalents of brand name lenses. The Tamron 15-30 mm is an excellent example of that strategy.</p></blockquote>

Newbie

Hello everyone,

So I recently got my first dslr (600D), and have accumulated a few lenses in the past couple months that have allowed me to further my creativity. I know not all of them are landscape. I did not see a general section for introductions like other forums.

Ive stopped using my 18-55 kit lens. I do have a 75-300 canon, but rarely use that due to not doing much landscape photog. But Just this past week I bought the canon 10-22mm ultra wide, and the canon 24mm pancake lens. Its still fairly cold here in NJ. Im fairly new, and still learning. I do stay in manual mode to learn the camera. Please give me any critics you may have for me to improve.

Here are my favored shots:

6D Mark II based on latest 5D Mark IV Rumor

If the latest 5D4 rumor holds true or is close to true -

This leaves room for the 6D2 to be more like the 5D3 was, following the previous trend.

At 9fps, the 6D2 could easily have 5 or even 6 and not be a threat.

At 28mp, the 6D2 could move up to 22MP give or take, and not challenge the 5D4's resolution. Possibly 24MP to match Nikon?

Video of course will not have any dual pixel or 4K. But should go up to 1080 at 60fps. Cleaner video.

The only area that would be in question is the autofocus system. Hard to say what it gets, I would wager the 19 point system to make sure it doesn't compete with the big boys. Just trying to think like Canon. But Canon will wake up and use the 61 point system because Nikon isn't scared to give 39 or 51 points. If they do go with the 61 point system, it will likely be the identical system from the 5D3 with none of the enhancements the 5DS has. Any chance Canon brings out a system somewhere between 19 and 61? Who knows. Debut that in the 6D2, then let that system trickle down to the successor of the 70D and others...

Dual card slots would be nice.

Hope they keep the Wifi, and exclude an articulating screen.
