Hi there. I thought it's easier to keep track of what people are expecting by using a poll thread rather than anything else. Let's get it started!

If you have any additions please let me know.

btw. will be fun to see if most of us were right when it's released :)

25 Pdr Artillery pieces.

Hi Folks.
Some shots from the commemorative events in Normandy. These are 25 Pdr artillery pieces firing blank rounds. Real fun to capture, the unit officer says number one gun fire, the gun crew chief responds number one gun fire, I press and hold the shutter button on my 40D and lo and behold lots of shots of not much happening, but out of the hundred plus I took I did get some good shots, unfortunately they are all JPEG as was not at that time fully aware of the capability to improve shots in raw format.
Please feel free to join in posting similar if you have it.

Edit. Yes I just saw the lump of crud on the sensor in some of the images.

TC generation / lens matching

Hi, I'll start with my usual caveat, apologies if this seems uppity, but please only post an answer if you have actual first hand, hands on experience of what I'm asking and the kit I'm asking about.

Still here? Great. Lets begin.

I have a 70-200 f2.8L (non-IS)

I would like to get more reach, and don't have the funds just now for either a 300mm f4L IS or 400 f5.6L.

In the past I've owned a bigma (DG, pre-OS) but didn't like the even slower aperture or IQ towards far end.
I've currently got an ancient Tokina 400 f5.6 SD, which can be ok stopped down (I mainly shoot video) but really want something I can use at f5.6 or faster.

I used to own the 1.4x II converter, but never really liked it that much on my 70-200, it needed a couple of stops down to really get the best out of it, and I wasn't happy with the level of chromatic aberation either.

So I'm looking at the 2.0x... the question I have is, am I better to match my lens to the contemporaneous tc? (so prob v1 for my 70-200) or will the v3 be significantly better?

You rarely see reviews for lens + TC combos with charts etc so it's hard to know what to do.

In an ideal world I would just buy the 400 f5.6, but at the moment there are too many other avenues for my cash..

Can anybody vouch for or ideally illustrate the IQ of different TC's?

Diffuser for Canon 600ex for event

Hi all, been lurking here for a while cause I like to nerd out on all the sensor/lens talk.

A little background:
Anyway, I am a hobby landscape/surf photographer, though slowly I've been learning/taking small jobs (commercial stuff, installation shots) from people I know, and its been going pretty good. Slowly but surely... So last month I did a one day shoot of an installation of a cleaning accessory in the house (a pretty hands on involved process). The company wanted photos of the whole process for PR and their website. Before that job I purchased a canon 16-35 f4 which I was getting anyways for landscapes, and also the canon 600ex flash. I have 2 old 3rd party flashes w/ PW's I used years ago when photographing skateboarding, but they are fully manual and pretty slow to recycle. Fine for off camera lighting with skateboarding but for paid event, I wouldn't feel comfortable. Those 2 purchases really helped the job go smoothly.. Tight spaces, low light - that new lens and flash worked perfectly. The customer and I were very happy with the results. Luckily the whole house had white ceilings and light palette colored walls, so I bounced the flash off the ceiling for 99% of the shots.

Need advice:
Now the same company wants me to shoot a 2 day event. It will be outside, under a few tents. I don't know much more details. I assume they will be medium-ish sized tents, and I assume they will be white, however they could be black for all I know. I'd like to be prepared for both instances. If they're white, I'm thinking I could bounce the flash off the tent. However, I'd like to purchase a diffuser if the tents are black or for shots taken outside of the tent. I'd appreciate if you'd share your experiences with whatever diffuser you have. I've been looking on BH and see a bunch but just wanting to hear others experiences and maybe recommendations based on the provided info.

Thank you

Poor video quality or normal?

Hi,

I have an EOS M and I like it very much for photos but as I tried the video mode I was a bit disappointed.

It looks less sharp und less detailed. If I capture a still image ("Photo in Movie") in the 2 MP mode (In the menu the option "Image quality" and then "S2" and "Aspect Ratio" 16:9) I will get a much better quality. Here are two samples, one with the 2 MP Still-Photo-Mode und the other a Screenshot from the video-file:

2 MP Still-Photo-Mode: img4.fotos-hochladen.net/uploads/image3dn50klcmp.jpg
Video-Screenshot: img4.fotos-hochladen.net/uploads/videontj6xoak7m.jpg

As you can see, the "normal" Photo is much better, better colors, better sharpness, details, etc.
Both were shot at the same time ("Photo in Movie") with the EF-M 18-55mm IS STM, 18 mm, ISO 125, Av 9.0, Tv 1/40.

What I also noticed is, that shadows in the videos are more darker.

So is this normal or does the camera have a defect?

Thank you very much in advance and I look forward to your reply.

Best regards
Julia

Nevada Wier in India...

I have admired this photographer ever since I discovered her in 2009 after I got back into photography. She is super human and has been all over the world for over 30 years. She loves to teach when she isn't travelling which is most of the time. She never stops. Here is a great image of her at a celebration in India where they throw tons of colored dust. What a blast!

You could look at her images for hours. She is exceptional.

Canon EF 11-24 f/4L Sample Images

HTML:
I’m still waiting for my Canon EF 11-24 f/4L to arrive here in snowy Canada, but Keith at Northlight received his and has posted a few real world sample images and some examples of sharpness and how wide 11mm really is. The difference between 14mm and 11mm is pretty substantial as you’ll see. The example showing the corner sharpness is also impressive.</p>
<p>Be sure to post your examples in the forum if you have received your lens already.</p>

Tower Of London - Poppy River Of Blood

Taken last year at the Tower of London of the poppy river around the moat. For those of you that don't know this is made up of 888,246 ceramic poppies, one for each fallen British service man in WW1. It was a very emotional sight to say the least.

After Dark (c. 1900) they hold a reading of the names of the fallen followed by the playing of last post. Sorry to say that pushed the 7D to the limits (ISO6400) but these two capture the atmosphere well.

Gift for gf's birthday?

Hello guys, I hope everything is well with you. My gf's birthday is coming soon, and she told me she wanted to have a small camera to walk with, do street photography and take some pictures of her friends. She also wants the camera to have good video capabilities. All of that is just for fun and not intended to be used professionally.

I myself have Canon 5d with various L lenses (85 1.2, 70-200 2.8ii, 200 2.0 etc) but this is too heavy and inconvenient for her. I guess mirrorless cameras would be the best option but unfortunately I've never owned one and have very little knowledge regarding which camera would be the best for her purposes. Any advice on the camera and maybe a good zoom lens, please? Price is not an issue.

Thanks a lot and have a nice weekend, everybody :)

The State of the Camera Industry in 2014

HTML:
LensVid.com has posted their yearly infographic showing the state of the photographic industry last year. They use the data from the CIPA statistics that were recently released.</p>
<div id="attachment_18956" style="width: 585px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Infographics-2014-01-2.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-18956" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Infographics-2014-01-2-575x359.jpg" alt="Click for Larger" width="575" height="359" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Click for Larger</p></div>
<p><strong>Here are a few key points (from LensVid):</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Camera manufacturing/sales (all types) went down in 2014 by 31% (in 2013 we looked at close to a 40% drop).</li>
<li>Lenses manufacturing/sales (for DSLR/mirrorless cameras) went down in 2014 by 12% (in 2013 it went down by %20).</li>
<li>Japan is still a huge photography market (13% of all cameras and 14% of all lenses sell in Japan which has less than 2% of the world’s population), however the rest of Asia is the only place which seems to gain any momentum in 2014.</li>
<li>Mirrorless cameras (despite all the hype) are still just 7% of the entire camera market (up from a mere 5% in 2013).</li>
<li>Compact cameras are a dying breed – going down from a 108 million units in 2010 to only 29 million in 2014 (and this number is likely to go down even further in 2015).</li>
<li>Predicting the future of the camera market proved challenging in the past – IDC (the American market research, analysis and advisory firm) failed to predict what will happen to the mirrorless camera market. In 2012 they concluded that in 2014 we will see no less than 13 million mirrorless cameras sold worldwide. Only 3 million mirrorless cameras were actually sold…</li>

Fujifilm like the EOS 7D mark II

A couple of excerpts from an interview with Fujifilm's Senior Manager for Sales & Marketing over at DPReview.
http://www.dpreview.com/articles/0704217094/cp-2015-fujifilm-interview-our-lenses-are-waiting-for-higher-resolution-sensors

Digital SLRs. Mid-range and high-end DSLRs like Canon’s EOS 7D Mark II, for example. Canon did a good job with that camera. And as we move into the telephoto lens area for wildlife photography and so on, those customers definitely need a better autofocus system. Just introducing a telephoto zoom is not a solution. Focus accuracy and speed has to be there.

One of the most interesting cameras in the past six months or so was the Canon EOS 7D Mark II. Historically Canon keeps its high-speed cameras at the top-end, in their professional cameras, but with the 7D II they’ve moved those features down into APS-C. So they see an opportunity in that format. The focusing system is really good.

Could you comment my future upgrade path?

I am an avid amateur shooter, focusing mainly on architecture and landscape. I am planning an once in a lifetime trip to Antarctica in february 2016 or 2017. I currently own a Canon EOS 6D and a 7D mark II, Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 HSMII, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II and Canon Extender EF 2x III.

As this trip to Antarctica will be a unique opportunity to make great pictures, I was wondering if I should upgrade any of my kit pieces. I will probably be able to upgrade one piece if the trip happens in 2016 or two if I go to Antarctica in 2017. Which of these options would you choose:

2016 options:
a) Do nothing - this kit is enough.
b) Upgrade 17-40mm to 16-35mm f/4L IS this year
c) Upgrade 24-70mm f/2.8L to 24-70mm f/2.8L II

2017 options

d) buy Canon 5DS R.
e) Upgrade 70-200 f/2.8L IS II to 100-400mm f/4-5.6L IS II
f) Upgrade Sigma 12-24mm to Canon 11-24mm f/4L
g) Do nothing.

I can choose only one alternative each year. So, I would appreciate if you could point me which options you would choose for each year and why would you choose these options.

Back in my APS-C days (XTi and T2i), my most used lens was Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5mm USM, but when I moved to full frame, I started to favor the 24-105mm f/4L IS and although I love the field of view of the 12-24mm, sometimes it is just too much. I and deeply interested in using the 70-200mm with the 2x extender, but sometimes it is too heavy to carry on a hike. I was wondering what would improve the IQ I can achieve to a greater extent: upgrading the 24-70mm or using the 16-35mm as an intermediate between 12-24mm and 24-70mm.

Thanks,
Antonio

Combining Roger's test - Canon 11-24 vs Nikon 14-24

I took two test Roger did and combined the charts. Hope this is legit (tests were done the same way) and I am not stepping on anyone's toes.

Thought I would share what I found. Note perfect match as far as focal lengths go (except for 24). Not sure if Roger tested the Canon at F4 and Nikon at F2.8 - I think he did.

My observations: at 24 Canon is sharper (if MTF means sharper) until the very edge.

No direct comparison at 14 but can compare Canon 11 and 16 to Nikon 14. Not sure what to make of these charts. What do they mean to my images?
