landscape/astro lansdscape lens advice.

Hey I've been a long time reader of this website but finally decided to register because I need some lens advice. I do a lot of backpacking and try to keep my kit as minimal as possible. Im looking for a great landscape lens but also a fast lens for landscape astrophotography. I'm looking at the 16 -35 f2.8 II but have heard a lot about it being very soft in the corners. I've also looked at the possibility of the 16-35 f4 and possibly a wide fast prime? I'm currently shooting with the 6d and the 24-105 and the sigma 15 mm 2.8 fisheye (I also shoot a lot of skateboarding) the 50 1.8 and the 100mm f2.8 macro. I love the fisheye but don't want that much distortion with the landscapes. Ive looked at the new Tamron 15 - 30 2.8 and it's getting mixed reviews so far. My main hesitation with that is that I want to be able to use filters with it. Im willing to spend around $2,000 for either a lens or lens combo. Anyways if you guys with your expertise and real world knowledge have any advice I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

thoughts on Sony A7R / any tricks

Hi

I have rented a Sony A7R with Metabones IV adapter to try it out on a photo tour next week. I'll be using my canon lens for landscape and realize that AF will a challenge. Only got 1 battery so hope this will work okay.

If you have a A7R or tried it out, any tricks/tips I should know about it?

If I don't want to go to 50 MP (5Ds), how does this rate as an option?

Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L Accepts Rear Gelatin Filter

HTML:
Here’s a feature I didn’t know existed on the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L, maybe I’m the only one that didn’t know, this is from the lens manual. The EF 17-40mm f/4L, EF 8-15 f/4L fisheye and a few others also have this feature, does anyone actually use it?</p>

First Tests: Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L a Winner

HTML:
LensRentals.com has completed their initial tests of the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM. They have come away extremely impressed and they look forward to further testing and most importantly, making images with it.</p>
<p><strong>From LensRentals.com</strong></p>
<blockquote><p><em>As you can see, the center t 16mm has an even higher resolution than the two extreme ends, although the edges are just a bit weaker.</em></p>
<p><em>But all of that is hair-splitting; this is a remarkable lens. Canon made the widest full-frame rectilinear lens available, and made it with superb image quality throughout the zoom range. Once again, hat’s off to Canon’s lens designers.</em></p></blockquote>

True reach of 100-400 L II

Hi, I just compared my f/5.6 400 L to the new 100-400 L II.

Image quality difference that I perceived is more or less like displayed at "the digital picture". In short: In the center, the 100-400 L outperforms the 400 L by just a bit, in the corners, the 400 L is better and also, the distortion of the 100-400 L is more pronounced.

But that's nothing new. However, there is another striking difference: The reach at "400 mm". I have no means of testing the absolute focal length of both, but assuming that the focal length of the 400 L is exactly 400 mm, then the longest focal length of the 100-400 II is only 363 mm. If found that by measuring lengths in images of testcharts, taken with both lenses from the same spot. Distance to the test chart was 6 m.

I already knew, that the indications of focal lengths of zooms are often rounded up quite a bit. For instance, my 200 L II + 1.4 extender (= 280 mm) gives practically the same reach as the long end of my 70-300 L.

But in the case of the 100-400, I find the rounding a bit over the top. I didn't examine the wide end, but let's assume that the 100 mm are correct, the we are talking about a 100 - 363 mm lens.

And anyone wants to add reach with a 1.4 x extender must know that he doesn't get 560 mm (which could maybe still be described as "almost 600 mm") but in reality, he gets 509 mm, which of course is something very different.

Again, my calculations assume that the 400 L is 400 mm. If its real focal length were 440 mm, then the long end of the 100-400 would really be 400 mm, but I heavily doubt that.

Does anyone have measured the real focal lengths? Also, I know that the focal lengths sometimes change with distance. I could do the same test with targets at infinity ... but maybe someone of you has already done that?

Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L Initial Impressions and Photos

Yesterday I had the opportunity to go out and do my first shoot with the new 11-24mm ultra wide beast. I must say I had a very happy evening and overall very impressed with this lens. Sharing some of my initial impressions and photos. This is not an objective review or a test; just some of my personal thoughts from the experience. Also note I've just had one outing with this lens and that too I shot almost exclusively at 11mm since it was so much fun; there is a lot to be tried and tested still. I'm not an expert; just enjoying photography as a hobby.

Photos here (shot with 5D3 at 11mm):
http://www.paramsandhu.com/Galleries/Blog/Canon-EF-1124mm-f4L-USM-Review/n-pDLvbK/

Hope to add some write-up to the pictures soon for why I was impressed with the images and certainly looking forward to taking more photos.

  • It is sharp alright. Beautiful center sharpness and even the corners look very impressive at least to me. No need to worry here.

  • Amazing range, there is nothing like it in the ultra wide zoom world. 11mm is freaking awesome. If you do a lot of interior architecture stuff you will love it.

  • Lots of vignetting at f4, but easily corrected in post though (I used Lightroom 5). Subsides around f9. Not noticeable at f11

  • Flares! The bulbous front element could be a flare magnet and no surprises really. How would you even try to minimize it?

  • Perspective Distortions. Yes it’s a rectilinear but keep it perfectly level with the horizon. Move it around just the very slightest and the image can change dramatically. Shoot people if you want to get giggles.

  • Autofocus. Haven’t tried it enough to say anything and I have a feeling that I don’t care. I personally expect this lens to be set on a tripod, in manual focus 90% of the time.

  • Weight. Not an issue for me. I guess it depends on what you are used to shooting with. The 70-200 f2.8L II is by far my most favorite walk about lens so yes it feels close to the same heft. Again I expect this this lens to be on a tripod 90% percent of the time.

  • No f2.8? What would you even want to shoot with an ultra wide lens at f2.8? Night sky maybe? What else..

  • Got to be careful with that front element. This is the first lens I’m shooting without any sort of UV filter attached and yes I have shattered a couple of them in the past. The 5D3 with this lens feels good in my hand and I did not feel particularly worried on my first walkabout but it sure will be a heart break if anything touches that beautiful glass.

  • Build quality. Stellar.

  • Sprawling landscapes at 11mm? Things become tiny and appear to be much farther away than they really are. I can certainly envision specific use cases where it could really shine and plan to try that these out on an upcoming trip. I must say just the thought of pairing this with the 5DS R and cropping out a large panorama from a single frame has me really excited. Off late I have been doing a lot of stitched panoramas, this lens provides a much simpler approach to the problem.

  • 11-24mm f4L + 24-70 f2.8L II + 70-200mm f2.8L II. You get the picture. Throw in medium format level resolution in the mix and wow that is something I am now really looking forward to seeing for myself.

  • So the question I have right now is; what’s the point of retaining the 17-40mm and 24mm TSE? The 17-40 takes filters, specifically the big stopper. That to me is enough reason to still keep it. LEE is going to come out with a filter adapter, but it possibly cannot work with the big stopper?? The 24mm TSE seems more suspect right now, love doing stitched panoramas with it and off course it has tilt/shift. The 11-24mm easily does away with the need for stitching multiple 24mm shots and it’s so wide and sharp that you can possibly get away with perspective correction in post at the cost of some lost image size. I’m sure there are similar questions about other lenses with overlapping focal lengths.

50L - taming the beast!?!

Dear all,

this one is for the advanced users only - and ONLY about the 50L - and only about close
subjects and only about wide apertures...
I am interested in your experiences with this special one, best 50L with 5DIII or 1Dx.

I know that this is the trickiest Canon lens.
And this was and sometimes still is giving me headaches.

It is absolutely tricky to nail the focus with this one.
And I still have a lot of misses.

Please don't give me hints like the DOF is very thin... or be aware of moving the thin focus pane etc.
Believe me - I can exclude subject movement and camera movement.

I have multiple calibrated bodies and calibrated lenses as well - all calibrated separately to neutral 0
by Canon. I did have multiple copies - all behaved very similar. The current 50L was calibrated twice.

I think I have learned the following:

a)
Shooting portraits I always use the center focus point aiming on the eye with ONE SHOT or SERVO, even with 5DIII I do avoid outer focus points because they behave differently and may cause trouble.

b)
This lens can't be properly calibrated by Canon or via MA at all because of the focus shift issue.
It can be calibrated on distances greater than approx. 2m, there you might have no issues.

c)
On closer distances we must face focus shift. Focus shift depends on aperture and subject distance,
this is why you can't get a unique calibration which always does fit.

d)
I had two copies, both behaved like this:

On close distance (approx. 1m) I have to use micro adjustment around -10 for f/1.2.
On close distance (approx. 1m) I have to use micro adjustment around -15 for f/2.
On close distance (approx. 1m) I have to use micro adjustment around -20 for f/2.8

I am not much interested in other apertures at this distance.

On distances > 2m I use MA = 0. No issues.

Makes sense to me because the lens always uses f/1.2 for focussing. For other
apertures focus shift kicks in when taking the picture. (Does not explain why I have
to start with -10 right at f/1.2 - maybe otherwise the lens does not perform in other scenarios?)

e)
Anyway the lens is inconsistent, keeper rate is still only around 60% even using the technique above.

So I am interested in you experts how do you deal with this lens?
Do you have the same findings?
Is there someone having no issues and who does not need MA for apertures < f2.8 at close distances?
(I read a post somewhere where someone was stating having no problems and did show totally
blurred pictures to prove is flawless equipmentt ;-) )

No - I am interested in you pixel peepers - accepting nothing but crisp sharp pictures where the focus
is spot on.

Please concentrate on just the 50L.. all the others (85L, 135L, 35L, 50 1.4) are all easy stuff compared
to this one.

Tell me - how do YOU tame the 50L beast?
How do you take crisp sharp images?

Regards, Tom

Any way 5d3 goes UP when 5d4 announced?

Looking at the great prices on 5d3 right now ($1950.00) and tempted but not knowing what the 5d4 specs will be I hate to pull the trigger.

I have seen claims that old lenses occasionally go up when a Mk 2 comes out, though I have not actually seen it happen myself. Any chance of that with a body?

Do you think these grey market deals will continue after 5d3?

Do you think they will continue selling 5d3 for a while alongside 5d4 (and 5ds and 5dr) or will they discontinue it almost immediately?

Review: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II

HTML:
Professional nature photography Kevin Ebi took some time to write an interesting review of the brand new EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II.</p>
<p><strong>Here is a summary of some of Kevin’s thoughts.</strong></p>
<ul>
<li class="p1"><span class="s1">The Mark II doesn’t zoom quite as far. The extreme telephoto end of the new 100-400 is a little more than 2% shorter than the Mark I.</span></li>
<li class="p1"><span class="s1">There is not a huge difference in image quality at the center of the two generation of lenses, but at the corners, there is less distortion in the Mark II. Sharpness is improved, but it’s not a mind-blowing improvement. (A lot of people on your forums ask how it compares to a 70-200 Mark II with a doubler; it provides a readily visible improvement over that setup.)</span></li>
<li class="p1"><span class="s1">The 100-400 II does suffer a bit from the “onion rings” phenomenon, but I don’t think it ruins any images. In fact, it’s no worse than the 600mm f/4 IS. The weather conditions that allowed me to photograph the phenomenon evaporated fast, so I couldn’t compare it to the Mark I.</span></li>
<li class="p1"><span class="s1">A minimum focusing distance of 3 feet/1 meter may seem overkill for a lens primarily used for wildlife, but it has opened new creative possibilities for me. For birds that you are able to get close to — either through opportunity or through remote rigs — it lets you capture sharp subjects with stunningly beautifully backgrounds.</span></li>

I'm Torn Between...

Hello my fellow canon rumor members. I would like some feedback. I'm torn between the Canon 16-35 f4 and the Tamron 24-70 f2.8. I shoot with a 7d mark ii and the focal lengths I like to use most are 16, 24, 35 and 50. Both lenses have IS and I'll be using which ever lens I get for both photo and video. I'll also be using the lens for general photos and street photography. Can you guys please help me make a choice?! I do plan on going full frame, probably when the 5d Mark 4 come out, so efs lenses are not an option.

16-35 F4 Restock Date in Canada?

Hi All,

First post here!

In any case, I cannot for the life of me find the 16-35 F4 in stock anywhere in Canada (I've called coast to coast), and nowhere seems to be getting it in any time soon. Have had one on order for about 2 months now, and the store has 41 backordered. I see plenty in the states, but the dollar is too low to buy from over there.

Anyone here have the inside scoop for when they'll be shipping the next batch to Canada? I'm hoping they'll be on the boat with the 11-24 but I'm not holding my breath.

7dII FOCUSING PROBLEMS WITH 300MM PRIME LENS

I have both the 7D and the 7dii. I had the 7D for nearly a year and the 7Dii was supposed to be an upgrade for me.
Both cameras were set to the same exact settings (or as close as possible given that the shutter speeds have slight variations, etc.). I was shooting horse races using both the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II and the 3oomm f/2.8 L IS prime lens. On day one I used the 7D and 7Dii with the 70-200 lens alternating cameras one race after the other. On day two I alternated cameras race by race using the 300mm. RESULTS: Both the 7D and 7Dii shot identical quality shots using the 70-200mm. Using the 300mm prime lens, only the 7D shot in-focus shots one after the other. Nearly every shot taken by the 7dii was blurry. I spent a solid week testing and retesting. Same results.

There is something inherently wrong with here. Compatibility issues? Maybe? I sent the 7Dii back to B+H which honored their 30-day return policy.

Now my search for an upgrade to the 7D continues. I thought the 7Dii would be that upgrade but it turned out to be a huge disappointment!

Canon Cinema EOS C700x Rumor a Fake

HTML:
A rumor showing a Canon Cinema EOS C700x starting popping up around the web and in our inbox yesterday. We have confirmed our initial suspicions that this is a fake.</p>
<p>The camera in the image is the C500 PL mount with some “work” done to fit the larger 34mm sensor and a longer base to fit the “X”, which in itself makes no sense. We’re also told that most PL lenses wouldn’t work with a 34mm wide sensor.</p>
<p>We have confirmed that the EOS C300 Mark II and EOS C500 Mark II will be coming to NAB 2015 in April. We have not heard of any other “Cinema EOS” branded products coming for the show, but that could change.</p>

Canon 5DS April release date ?.

Hi

I've just come across an article on the WEX Photographic website. In the comments at the bottom of the page it is states "We are expecting stock towards the end of April". Has anybody else heard anything about the 5DS being available earlier than June ?.
