Cheating - feeling guilty...

I feel a little guilty, I've started to cheat.

It's not like there's anything wrong with her, she's still as beautiful as ever, it's just that I've started to notice things about her that hadn't bothered me before. You see, how do you put this politely, she's a bit heavy and indiscrete. There's another that caught my eye some time ago and I've realized that I've lusted after her and now finally I've had her in my hands and I'm worried about what it might mean for my relationship.

What I'm trying to say is that I've bought a Fuji X-T1 and the beautiful 23mm f/1.4 and 56mm f/1.2 lenses. I still love my 5D MkIII and still fully intend to use it when I need the performance of a full frame DSLR, but my focus has shifted to street photography following a change in circumstances [moving to a big(ger) city]. The 5D MkIII is a bit big and intimidating and lacks a tilting screen for candids.

I don't know how this will go, I might end up hating the Fuji, but I wanted to give something new a try. It's a shame that Canon couldn't come up with an EOS M-P with an EVF and some more fast primes, as that would have also acted as a nice backup body to my 5D3.

Has anyone else done the same as me?

Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Image Quality Examination

I did an in depth breakdown of the image quality from the new Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 VC lens with a number of crops and examination of what it all means.

I don't think that I am letting the cat out of the bag by saying that this is a very compelling lens. My full review is yet to come, but for those of you looking for some early info, take a look at the article here: http://bit.ly/1E5uvqD

P.S. Here is a photo of me taken with the lens this morning as the sun rose out on a frozen river. It was about 40 below...and my trigger finger is still a bit numb 5 hours later!

New mirror mechanisms - how is this a good thing?

Perhaps someone can tell me why the new mirror servo mechanism with at least 11 moving parts (that I can count) is considered a selling point. Less vibration? Then on top of that Canon has added a shutter delay to minimize vibration. What is Canon doing with all of this? I see this hype as only bringing to bare that there remains a fundamental design trad-off with the new cameras. Its a negative selling point if you ask me. Is having a mirror so important to sell cameras when a mirror-less camera avoids all these vibration issues?

Review: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II

HTML:
<p>Friend of the site Dustin Abbott has completed a comprehensive review of Canon’s brand new EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II. If you head over to his review, there’s also a full video review if you prefer to watch instead of read.</p>
<p><strong>From Dustin</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>I’m not finding much to criticize with this lens. It isn’t cheap, but it is a pretty killer optic with a pro grade build quality. It’s expensive ($2199), but no more so than Canon’s 70-200 f/2.8L or 24-70 f/2.8L variants. When compared with the higher end telephotos, however, it is a great bargain. It offers great reach in a compact package that most users should be able to handhold due to its manageable weight and excellent image stabilizer. It has amazing image quality with next to no real shortcomings. I love my Canon 70-300L and have enjoyed my Tamron 150-600 VC, but this lens has left me in a conundrum. I am strongly considering selling both of these lens in exchange for the new Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM II. I like it that much.</p></blockquote>

<p>Stock of this lens is extremely scarce and I suggest pre-ordering it as soon as you’re able if you want to be able to have one for the spring.</p>

TS-E 17 f/4L vs TS-E 24 f/3.5L II

I had to take my wife to the local University last night so I thought I'd take out the T/S lenses to take a couple of photos of Doak Campbell Stadium at Florida State and the Unconquered statue in front of it. I ended up having very little time and didn't have a flashlight which made leveling the tripod tough. I forgot to take off the UV filter on the 24mm so there's flare and worse flare (with the 1.4x III).

All shots are f/16, 100s, ISO 100, Shift +4 (I think, it was dark), no Tilt. The idea was to frame the whole stadium each time and these are very lightly edited with minor cropping and no retouching. I'll probably edit out the stars and flare at some point. Also, note that this isn't vignetting - it's the glow of the stadium lights, which were turned on inside the stadium.

Hopefully this will give people a little better idea of the different looks of these lenses based on focal length.

TS-E 17 f/4L about 4ft/1.2m from the pedestal:

TS-E 24 f/3.5 II about 50ft/15m from the pedestal:

Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II Teardown

HTML:
<p>Roger at LensRentals.com has done a teardown of the brand new Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II and has come away very impressed.</p>
<blockquote><p>I know I can’t really, without showing you dozens of other lenses, do a good job of impressing you with just how robustly engineered this lens is. I will say that the insides look more like what we’d expect to see in a 500mm f/4 or 600mm f/4 lens, rather than a telezoom. It’s by far the most heavily engineered zoom lens Aaron and I have ever seen; and we’ve seen the insides of dozens of lenses in this range.</p>
<p>Well done, Canon engineers, well done!</p></blockquote>

EOS-1D X Replacement in 2016 [CR1]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that we shouldn’t expect an EOS-1D X replacement until early 2016. While the announcement could come this year. The source said it may depend on what Nikon does in regards to a D5 announcement as well as getting the new sensor and DIGIC 7 ready.</p>
<p>2016 is an Olympic year, so we definitely expect a new flagship DSLR by then.</p>
<p>As Canon has said, they won’t be replacing cameras until there is enough technology improvements to warrant a new product.</p>

repair center

hello, I'm new to the forum. I would love some advice; I'm looking for an independent repair center which may have better pricing than the canon repair facilities. I'm actually a nikon shooter (sorry! i love them both - just shot with nikon in college so i stuck with it..) , I'm helping my good friend out. thank you in advance!!

Bag Recommendation

If the stars align I will soon be acquiring a second 5D III. As an outdoor portrait shooter I normally work with the 5D III/70-200 2.8L II combination, which I carry to the field with lens attached in a LowePro Pro Runner 200 AW, along with a detached 24-70 2.8L II for when I want to go for an occasional wide angle shot.

http://store.lowepro.com/pro-runner-200-aw

But recently I've been doing more landscape stuff with the 24-70, and incorporating more wide angle work in my portrait sessions, and really feeling the pain of doing lens swaps out in the field. I also recently got my first occurrence of an Err 80 during a session. A battery swap cleared it but my change in shooting approach coupled with the possibility of a pending gear malfunction got me thinking about acquiring a second body.

B&H has a great 5DIII/PIXMA PRO-100 rebate deal going on right now so thought this might be a great opportunity to add a second body to my kit and just keep the 24-70 and 70-200 each permanently mounted for ease of changeup during the session, plus have a hot spare should the need arise.

Canon 5DIII, PIXMA PRO-100 printer, 32GB card, battery (3rd party), small shoulder bag - $3099 but with a $550 rebate, so $2549 after rebate. Fold in the retail value of the printer, card and battery and that's close to $2000 for the body.

I really need a good recommendation for a bag that can hold 2 5D III's each with a lens attached (24-70 and 70-200, respectively), with the goal to be able to switch from one to the other without having to go through any kind of lens detach/attach process.

I prefer a backpack style.

Any help is appreciated.

Canon 85 1.2L USM II for only $10!?

I've seen a bunch of these weird postings show up all over Amazon lately. In fact, tonight I saw this lens in "Very Good" condition listed for $800, so I bought it immediately. Soon afterwards, I got a notice via Amazon that my order had been cancelled due to "Technical Difficulties."

Now, the same seller has the lens listed at $10!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000EW9Y4M/ref=dp_olp_refurbished?ie=UTF8&condition=refurbished

I'm not sure how long it will stay up because I'm calling shenanigans on the whole thing, and I'm sure Amazon will catch up if it's truly fishy. I've always had good experiences with Amazon when their sellers have been dodgy because they manage all the money flow and immediately have refunded my payments from shifty sellers.

Has anyone had experiences with these sorts of things?

Thanks in advance!

Canon to Buy Video Surveillance Leader Axis for $2.8b

HTML:
<p>Canon appears to be going forward with their security camera business. With the shrinking consumer camera market, Canon is being aggressive in a space that is projected to see a lot of growth.</p>
<p><strong>TOKYO/STOCKHOLM, Feb 10 (Reuters)</strong> – Canon Inc made a 23.6 billion-Swedish-crown ($2.83 billion) offer for network video surveillance leader Axis AB on Tuesday — the biggest purchase ever for the Japanese firm trying to expand beyond a shrinking camera market.</p>
<p>Canon said it had launched a bid to buy all the Swedish company’s shares at 340 crowns apiece, a premium of nearly 50 percent to their closing price of 226.90 on Monday. At 1126 GMT, shares of Axis were up 48 percent at 336.50 crowns.</p>
<p>Axis said its board of directors unanimously supported the offer, and that three of its top shareholders representing around 40 percent of total shares will accept it.</p>
<p>Canon already sells surveillance cameras and sees the sector as a growing market, although it has not disclosed how much it earns from such products.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>The deal will make Canon a top player in the video surveillance market, which was worth an estimated $15 billion at the end of last year, according to researcher IHS.</p>
<p>Within that market, there is a $3.86 billion segment for network-connected security cameras which is led by Axis with a 17.5 percent share as of 2013.</p>
<p>Greger Johansson, analyst at research firm Redeye who had a bull case scenario of 250 crowns per share, said he thought the main owners had been unwilling to sell below 300 crowns as Axis had high revenue growth and was the No. 1 player in its market.</p>
<p>“We think some of the bigger players like Panasonic, Sony and Pelco could be interested… although the likelihood is relatively low considering the high bid.”</p>
<p>The deal comes after Canon late last month reported a slight increase in fourth-quarter profit, as a weaker yen and rising sales of office equipment offset weakness in a camera division competing with smartphones capable of high-quality imaging.</p>
<p>The company, which earned over 80 percent of its revenue overseas in 2014, said it would pay in cash.</p>
<p>Axis’ is targeting average annual growth of at least 20 percent and a profit margin of at least 10 percent. The company reported a fourth-quarter operating profit of 199 million crowns, slightly below analyst forecasts but up from 166 million a year earlier.</p>
<p>Around half of its sales come from the Americas, 40 percent from Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and the rest from Asia.</p>
<p>Axis said it will remain as a separate legal entity within Canon, and that its current management team will stay. Rusting Relic

Hi Folks.
This is a Paddle Steamer, the Ryde, built in 1937 she used to ply the Solent from Ryde to Portsmouth she also saw service as HMS Ryde. She also served as a disco in her little lagoon during my youth! Sadly she is a decaying hulk now with more holes than metal, she is scheduled for removal soon (some point during the improvement of the harbour behind her starboard side and to the front of her bow) in the next couple of years. Thought I would share the pictures here.
Still struggling with the processing, have I overdone it, your thoughts please.

HMS Ryde 1939 – 1945
In 1939 PS Ryde and PS Sandown were requisitioned by the Royal Navy. She was renamed as HMS Ryde and initially both were used as Minesweepers in the Dover Straits. After two years Ryde was converted to an anti-aircraft ship and served on the Thames Estuary and at Harwich. In May 1944 she travelled to Portsmouth from where she embarked to the Normandy coast to take part in the naval component of Operation Neptune on D-Day.

Interview With Head of EOS 5Ds & EOS 5Ds R Development

HTML:
<p>CPN has posted an interview with Tsunemasa Ohara, the Senior General Manager of Camera Research and Development at Canon Inc. He’s the man behind the development of this high resolution DSLR.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>CPN:</strong> What do you see as the potential future for Canon high-resolution cameras? Where might the technology be in five years time?</p>
<p><strong>TO:</strong> “There is a demand for high-megapixel (cameras) and high-resolution and, of course, we will continue on this quest in the future and to try to satisfy this demand. As you know, in August 2010, we announced a 120-million pixel APS-H CMOS sensor… so we have shown that we have the technology to produce even higher resolution sensors, but we must also focus on high image quality, too. So DIGIC processing, and all the other algorithms that contribute to high image quality, we need to work on too. It is the overall package that makes Canon EOS digital cameras so successful.”</p></blockquote>

Canon Rumors in Costa Rica
