7D MK II vs 5D MK III

Hey guys,

i need kinda help! Right now i am intrested in the mentioned bodies. I know its kinda typical.... full frame or not.

Basicly right now i own eh 70D. It is a good kamera with descent performance, but there is one thing i dont like which kinda annoys me. That are the ergonomics. My hands are to big for that little body.

So i got the idea to step up to the higher end of the canon line up.

So while there is no "real" upgrade on the sensor side from the 70D to 7D MK II there is still the amazing body.

On the other side there are a lot of used 5D MK III on the market for arround 2000 Euro. So for arround 400 Euro more i can enter the realm of full frame goodness.

On the lense side there is no problem all of my lenses are fullframe lenses.

Mainly i do creative work like costume/cosplay shoots with a 3 flash setup, but often i find myself do some day/night street photography as well as some nature/wildlife photography.

So any suggestions?

A problem with 5D mark III firmware 1.3.3

Hello,

I've noticed the following problem after update to latest firmware 1.3.3:

Lens is Zeiss ZE APO Sonnar 135mm f/2.0

In live view Av mode, aperture set to f/2.0, camera changes aperture (closes it by itself) when lighting conditions changed. Displayed value stays on f/2.0, but looking into lens you can see that aperture closes down. It happens dеspate exposure simulation is enabled or disabled.

In movie live view mode camera behaves as normal.

I would like to ask if anyone else has the same problem?

Canon EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R Press Release

HTML:
<p><strong>*UPDATE*

</strong>As <a href="https://twitter.com/canonrumorsguy" target="_blank">some have pointed out on Twitter</a>, there doesn’t appear to be any mention of video features. While I do know the camera will have some video capabilities, that’s not the focus of this camera. I suspect this is a partial press release.</p>
<p><strong>Canon revolutionises resolution with the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R

</strong>London, UK, 6 February 2015 – Canon today transforms the EOS system with the arrival of the EOS 5DS and the EOS 5DS R – a new breed of ultra-high resolution full-frame DSLRs.</p>
<p>Breaking the boundaries of 35mm sensors, the new cameras offer the highest megapixels ever seen in a full frame sensor, an astonishing 50.6MP. Delivering unparalleled quality, the cameras provide an exceptional combination of resolution, responsiveness and durability, whether shooting landscapes, architecture, high fashion or portraiture, either personally or professionally. When nothing but the sharpest image is expected, the EOS 5DS R also features a low pass cancellation filter to maximise the sensor’s resolution and visible image quality.Alongside the new DSLRs, Canon also introduces the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM, the world’s widest-angle rectilinear zoom lens(1), the perfect companion for landscape and architecture photographers.</p>
<p><strong>Establishing new standards for full-frame DSLRs

</strong>Setting a new benchmark for full-frame cameras, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R combine fast, instinctive DSLR handling with the newly-developed 50.6MP CMOS sensor, providing the flexibility to shoot a wide range of scenes and subjects, making it ideal for large format mediums, such as advertising billboards and magazine covers, where every pixel matters. The sensor’s advanced architecture provides</p>
<p>ISO 100-6400 sensitivity, further expandable to 50-12800, ensuring high quality images with low noise, accurate colours and wide dynamic range. For added flexibility, the cameras’ resolution enables three new in-camera crop shooting modes–1.3x, 1.6x and 1:1. Visible through the viewfinder, the crop modes deliver outstanding results, with stills at 19 MP even when cropped to 1.6x. Built to withstand the most demanding shoots, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R’s dual DIGIC 6 processors provide the rapid performance and responsiveness required to deliver first-class images with exceptional colour reproduction. Both processors are designed to comfortably manage huge levels of image data from the 50.6MP sensor, whilst simultaneously reducing image noise and providing the freedom to shoot at five frames per second.</p>
<div data-canvas-width="236.2376">
<p><strong>Automatically exceptional</strong>

Created to ensure every detail of your exquisite landscape or high-fashion studio shoot is in focus, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS Rfeature an advanced 61-point AF system, with 41 cross-type points, delivering incredible levels of image sharpness and accuracy across the frame. Both cameras comfortably maintain focus with moving subjects, using EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition AF (iTR) to track both faces and colour. To reduce image blur, Canon’s Mirror Vibration Control System uses cams to drive the cameras’ mirror up and down in a highly controlled fashion, avoiding all sudden stops and softening the shutter-release sound. Additionally, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R’s 150k pixel RGB+IR metering sensor with Flicker Detection ensures images can be captured with consistent and accurate exposures under varying lighting scenarios, including florescent.</p>
<p><strong>Incredible detail and unrestricted creativity

</strong>Putting unrivalled image quality at your fingertips, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R include a number of customisable modes and settings to ensure stunning results every time. A new Fine Detail Picture Style maximises the level of detail that can be achieved from the sensor, enabling advanced sharpness adjustment without the need for edit ing software. Popular creative modes, including Multiple Exposure and HDR, provide instant, in-camera creativity, while a built-in timer allows you to shoot over long periods and create stunning time lapse videos, without being tied to the camera or needing advanced software and excessive kit.</p>
<p><strong>First-class professional construction, customisable features

</strong>The EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R have been expertly constructed to allow you to operate quickly, regardless of the environment you’re shooting in. The 100% viewfinder with electronic overlay makes framing vital shots easy and can be customised to your preferred style. The large, 8.11cm (3.2”) Clear View II LCD screen, with an anti-reflective structure, minimises reflection or glare when reviewing shots and also acts as a visual and accessible dashboard of the most commonly used settings. The cameras’ new Custom Quick Control screen means that the type, size and position of icons are also easily customisable to the user or shooting scenario. Both cameras utilise Canon’s iconic design DNA–a highly durable body constructed from high-grade magnesium alloy to provide weather resilient shooting – ideal for landscape photographers who are dedicated to getting the perfect shot, whatever the weather.</p>

Expect what with 5DS R

I currently use a 1Ds3 and will be buying the 5DS R for my studio floral stuff and some
landscape, and...am a avid PS CC user.

When I open an image on my monitor, am I going to notice a difference in overall IQ with
this new body or is that image merely going to be larger in size?

PS, when might I be able to download a manual before the purchase?

Canon 7D/Sigma 10-20mm or Canon 6D/16-35mm f4 ?

Hi guys

At the moment I'm shooting all with my old Canon 7D -> Landscape with a Sigma 10-20mm, Macro with a 100mm IS USM and Tele with a 55-250 IS USM (Hopefully soon replaced by the new 100-40mm II.

I have a few bucks to spend but I'm not sure about where to spend it, so maybe you guys can help me with that.

Should I just upgrade my body to the 7D Mk2 or should I upgrade to a 6D and use the new 16-35mm f4. What would you do?
Are there any reviews with side by side comparison of both solution/lenses ? Like how much improvement do you gain for landscape shots? Honestly I'm pretty satisfied with the Sigma 10-20mm....

Thanks for your advice guys!

"Canon Camera Connect" to replace "EOS Remote" in smartphones

(Disclaimer: I also posted this in dpreview ;) )

Hello

I am a very happy owner of a 70D. But I am not really happy with the "EOS Remote" app for my Android phone, mainly because I can only download downsized version of the photos in the camera, not the full resolution ones!!!

Today, I have found that there is a new app, "Canon Camera Connect", also made by Canon:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.canon.ic.cameraconnect&hl=en

that apparently was released recently: The first time that I find it mentioned is in Canon's announcement of the PowerShots SX710 and SX610. But as you can read in the Play Store, this app also supports the 6D and the 70D.

I have tested it with my camera and basically, it is the same as the old "EOS Remote" but... yay!! finally it is possible to download the full resolution photos from the camera!

It also mentions that you can download downsized versions of the CR2 files (?!?!?!??!?!??!?!), although I have not found how to do that... (I shot JPG+RAW, and I can only download JPG, maybe if you only have CR2 you get the option... I have to try that later).

It is a pity that "Acquire location information and add it to images on the camera" does not work with the 70D. I wonder why... Anyway, I find more practical to record a GPS track in the smartphone and then sync later in the PC than having the WiFi connection between the phone and the camera all the time enabled and draining the batteries just for this.

According to many comments, this version does not work with Android 5.

Regards

Metz Mecablitz 64 AF-1 Flash Review by Dustin Abbott

Hello, everyone, a bit of deviation from some of the other kit, but I just posted a review of the Metz Mecablitz 64 AF-1 flash units this past week. After doing a review for PhotoNews last year of these units I liked them well enough that I sold off my 580EXIIs and replaced them with the Metz units. They are excellent flashes, and despite the drama at Metz right now I like them well enough that I may add another in the future.

Here's the link to the review: http://bit.ly/1BUd10p

Anyone else using these? If so, what is your feedback?

  • Poll Poll
If you are buying the new 5DS or 5DSR, which one are you planning on?

I am pretty sure I will get either the 5DS or the 5DSR, but I don't know enough about which one to get and can't find that much information online about the low-pass filter. I've read a few places that with enough resolution, the low-pass filter is less useful. I'm still leaning towards the 5DS though because I read one post that showed the color issues without a low-pass filter. So, if you are going to buy one of the new camera bodies for sure, which one are you leaning towards?

Wide lens suggestion for APS-C

New to the forums; recently got back into photography this year.

I currently use a 70d body. One of my go-to lenses is the 17-55 2.8. Great combo on a APS-C. However, I'm looking for something a little wider on a crop. Mostly to use on landscapes, landmarks, and maybe some astrophotography.

Was looking at the inexpensive 10-18 STM, or maybe the upcoming Tokina AT-X 11-20mm 2.8?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Can the 11-24 replace the 17 mm T/S as far as......

.... the shift function is concerned?

I am guessing "yes" as the image circle has to be much bigger at 11 mm and may be bigger than the 17 mm T/S even at 12 mm.

I use my T/S only to shoot tall structures ( to be honest I have never been able to use the tilt function to my advantage, mainly because of lack of knowledge/expertise). I am thinking that using an 11-24 might be a better idea as metering/ AF capability will be advantageous.

Can someone throw more light on it ?

Thanks

Dholai

Advanced bokeh computation?

I was just reading about bokeh on wikipdia, and stumbled upon this sentence which unfortunately isn't qualified further (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh#Emulation):

Some advanced digital cameras have bokeh features which take several images with different apertures and focuses and then manually compose them afterward to one image.

Can someone please explain which these "advanced digital cameras" might be and how the post-processing assembly works?

If I find this interesting, it isn't that difficult to write a Magic Lantern module which achieves the same thing with a click of a button - aperture bracketing and focus bracketing are both already included, they just need to be combined.

<p>As <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/01/canon-eos-rebel-750d-spec-list-cr1/" target="_blank">first reported here</a>, the EOS 700D is indeed getting two replacements in the form of an EOS 750D and an EOS 760D. Both of these cameras will have identical 24mp sensors.</p>
<p>As for North American naming, I’d think T6 and T6i would make sense, we’ll know soon.</p>
