Recommendations for day hike backpack?

Hi guys

I'm looking to purchase a backpack to use mainly for day hikes, and to use as a carry-on when I travel by air.

I've been looking at the F-Stop Guru with a small shallow ICU, and while it looks great I'm not completely sold on it. I don't like that the hip belt cannot be removed and it looks like it will be very bulky if tucked away. I prefer to not have this on lighter/smaller packs. Also the pack looks to be slightly larger then what I'm after, but it's hard to tell from the photos.

So I'm basically looking for alternatives to the Guru with a similar feature set. Most important points are:
- Half the pack must be for other then camera gear.
- Must have direct access to both camera gear and other items (so I don't have to unpack everything every time)
- Prefer it to open towards the back (for camera gear access)
- Camera gear must be packed at the bottom of the pack, not the top.
- Removable waist belt or no waist belt.
- Must be comfortable to carry!
- Top handle

Gear I usually carry:
- Camera body without grip
- 24-70
- 70-300 (will be adding this shortly, so might as well include it).
- Extra battery, memory cards, rocket blower, lens pen and cleaning cloth
- Pouch with 4pcs 100 x 100mm filters
- Lee filter holder and adaptor rings
- Small Tripod
- Weatherproof jacket
- Extra base layer depending on season
- Two water bottles or a hydration bladder
- Food / snacks
- Multitool, tape, plastic bags, small towel, gloves etc..

So, any ideas guys? :)

Review: Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/15mm

HTML:
<p>Dustin Abbott has completed his review of the Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/15mm ultra wide angle lens for Canon.</p>
<p>I own and absolutely love this lens. It is far and away the best ultra wide angle lens you can get for your Canon DSLR and I know you’ve heard that before.</p>
<p><strong>From Dustin</strong><em>

“I’ve shot with a similar focal length for several years and have learned a certain familiarity with it. The degree of challenge associated with the focal length pays dividends in the incredible image quality you can achieve with it. Here's my Pentax 645z review from a long term Canon user

Hi everyone.

I've been asked a few times by forum members that when I review the Pentax 645z if I could post it in the forum.

Here it is: http://chrisgilesphotography.com/blog/pentax-645z-review-pt1-the-journey/

There's a fair bit there to go through and I cover the dynamic range, ergonomics, flash system and if you're in the mood 5.4gb of Pentax raw files for you to play with.

Love Canon, Love the Pentax.

Canon Tilt Shift Lens Question

I was wondering if anyone here has alot of experience with a Canon T-SE lens.
Specifically maybe the 24mm which I have.

I am wondering what degree of Tilt is required to get the maximum depth of field in a landscape shot.
My understanding it's typically not even one notch (1 degree) down.

I know you should focus on the distance and then tilt until something near is in focus.

I am wondering what do people do when they are taking a landscape shot and they want the maximum depth of field in focus. Do they set it to 1 degree down or would they attempt to put it somewhere between 0 and 1 (which because the notches are so small tiny adjustments).

Kind Regards
Fergal

Photographer Petitions Canon for Left Handed Camera

HTML:
<p>Florida based photographer <a title="" href="https://twitter.com/sylphotography" target="_blank">Sylvia Cacciatore</a> has started to drum up public support to hopefully get Canon to pay attention to the needs of left handed photographers. Sylvia doesn’t have use of her right arm and shooting with her left hand on a right handed camera proves to be difficult at times.</p>
<p>She contacted Canon about her issue and received a response that sadly I’m not all that surprised about. Someone at Canon told her she should try out the PowerShot line of cameras. This has motivated her to try and get some public support for her cause, a cause I think could affect a lot of people around the globe.</p>
<p><strong>From Sylvia</strong>

<em>“My name is Sylvia and I am writing this as someone who is disabled and is also left-handed, and I am asking for the consideration of the development of left-handed cameras.  I suffered from a brachial plexus injury at birth that caused complete paralysis of my right arm, which also caused my arm to never fully develop.  Living in a world that mainly caters to those who are right-handed and have use of both their arms is not easy. There are many things I am able to do using one arm, but there are times when some things are difficult to do. “</em> You can <a href="https://www.change.org/p/canon-inc-design-left-handed-cameras" target="_blank">read her entire story at Change.org</a> and sign the petition.</p>
<p>For all the south paws out there, would you pay a premium for a left handed version of a 5D Mark III from Canon?</p>

I'm conflicted please help

Looking at the 500 mkii with the 1.4x or the 300 mkii with both mkiii converters.

I like the versatility of the 300 as a 300, 420, or 600 but prefer the reach of the 500 (or paired 700).

I shot an mki 500 in Africa for 4 days and loved it. I can't imagine I would dislike the 500 mkii but I'm concerned the 300 f2.8 would be a nice option.

I have a 70d, 6d and 100-400 mki and tamron 70-200 f2.8 already. I primarily shoot wildlife. The 100-400 never is enough for birds which is why I was looking at the 500

Photographs taken in my yard

This Bobcat visited my yard on a Sunday afternoon and stayed a couple hours as I videoed and took photographs. It wasn't frightened as I went in and out of the house to get memory cards and additional batteries. Awesome Animal

One single reason to never buy Nikon DSLR

Although I use and love Canon, I am not a brand advocate. I work at a full service photo lab and when people ask me which camera is best I tell them they are equally good these days. But I recently had a customer buy a cable from us (we sell accessories but not cameras) for their Nikon D800. It uses a ten pin connection and we could never be sure the cable was actually in. A customer with a pro Nikon with same connection even tried to help and he could not quite get it. This was for an adaptor cable (3rd party) to a radio trigger but I think even the Nikon brand cable release uses the same connection. The connection is so difficult to achieve that it is essentially unusable. As far as I know all Nikon pro bodies use this (while the consumer bodies use a simpler connection). No matter how good the camera is, even if it was unquestionably better than any other manufacturer, I would refuse to buy a Nikon based on this one feature alone.

I should note that the Canon pro FILM cameras (Eos 1 series) had a similar problem, though not quite as bad. Thankfully Canon realized their mistake and made a much easier connection for the digital pro bodies.

Canon EOS 6D vs 5DIII images

Hi!

I know I'm probably making a silly question, but I have had a doubt for the last weeks and did not find any answer. I'm just an amateur, I had a Canon 5dMKIII and my wife has a 6D, I had mine stolen and have been using her camera for the last months. Apart from missing the AF system in the 5D, the thing is I like the images of the 6D more than the ones of the 5DIII, I somehow find them more pleasing. I know the specs of both cameras have some little differences, but I'm not sure they explain this difference. Could that be related to the type of post-processing I usually do in lightroom? Do any of you have a similar experience?

Which Sigma Lense?

Hello Guys,

I only used canon-rumors for the rumors till now^^ now I would like to hear your opinion on my question :)

So firstly I would like to replace my Kit-Lense. The 18-55 IS II !
I like to do Landscape and Architecture photos, for that I bought the 10-18 IS STM, but sometmes 18mm is too short, so I would like to buy a lense which continues the 10-18 with a good image quality.
(I own a Canon 600D, 10-18, the Kit, 50mm 1.8 and 70-300 VC USD)

I was thinkin about:

Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS HSM or
Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 HSM

Besides Landscape and Architecture, I wanna do soe Astro-shots and I am going on a helicopter trip over Chicago at twilight/sunset.

So to get the best result in general landscape fotography + the two "temporary" fields, which lense would you recommend?
Does the OS helps in an Helicopter? Is the Aperature 2.8 enough? or should i rely on the 1.8 for all the occasions?

As a help maybe my already taken pics can show you what kind of photos I do, so its easier to judge which lense works better.

EOS 6D no PC Port

I have just acquired a Canon EOS 6D. This camera does not have a built in PC sync Port.
What is my best option to get a PC sync port on this camera so I can trigger my studio lights using the PocketWizard PlusX. I have been researching hot shoe adapters with PC Sync Port but none of these appear to be reliable.

Should AFMA on a Set of Lenses Have Similar Spread from One Body to Another?

I have slowly been getting time to AFMA my lenses using Focal on my 7DII, after upgrading from 7D. I've noticed something that is strange to me, but maybe it is normal and I will ask this experienced group. These are the only two cameras I've ever had with this ability. The change in AFMA is not going in the same direction with all the lenses.

35L:
7D -2
7DII +2

50L:
7D -4
7DII -11 (-12 the first attempt but program crashed before saving report)

70-200 2.8II @70:
7D -1
7DII +4

70-200 2.8II @200:
7D 0
7DII +6

I do have some others that were AFMA on my old body that I'll eventually get the time to compare and see the trend. The 35 and the zoom seem consistent enough, but the 50 going the other way by such a margin seems odd to me. Should I be concerned? I used Reikan FoCal in both cases. The old 7D seemed very down the middle, with everything I had for lenses falling in the +- 5 range and better.

As a side note, I hope Reikan come out with an upgrade again soon. I had managed to AFMA a couple lenses before a trip, but only because I read the result right before the program crashed. The only way to stop wasting time and shutter count was to work in manual mode, not terrible, but not as convenient.

24-70 f4 IS vs. 24-105 IS

I own a very sharp and clean copy of 24-105 ... and have the opportunity to trade some other gear for a brand new 24-70 f4 IS lens.

I'm pretty happy with the 24-105, and my next length 70-200 f4 IS complements that lens well as far as overlap because I shoot with a FF and CF ... and can interchange easily when needed.

But, have never shot with a 24-70 f4, and hear such great things about it. If I trade for the 24-70, I will keep the 24-105 more than likely, or maybe sell it or trade it later. But it's not part of this trade.

Because the 24-105 and 24-70 will create a direct overlap, but lose the 70-105 range, can anyone who has field experience with both explain what gain comes with the 24-70 over that end of the 24-105 ... But a good trade comes along infrequently, and this one is good because the gear I'm exchanging I no longer use -- I could sell the gear for a bit less cash than the 24-70 cost -- so will actually gain a tiny bit in value if I trade ...

Will appreciate anyone with experience using both give some input here ... thanks

BTW: I shoot mostly sports / wildlife / action, but shoot enough wide images to justify having the 24-70, but the 24-105 covers it.

My dilemma: Will the 24-70 give me enough IQ improvement at that end to justify both in my bag?

If not, I'll pass and trade / sell my gear for something else -- altho, at the moment, I'm OK with gear - this kind of trade opportunity comes less often so, want not to miss if it's worth it.

I'm a bit puzzled on this one ... and don't want to 'rent' 24-70 just to see. Invalidates the value of the trade a bit if I rent one. :) <scratching head>

Just for fun,
ASSUMING the rumored 11-24mm f/4L arrives, performs well, has a bulbous element, and costs around $2499-$2999: which would option would you pick below if you could only have one since they would cost around the same?

OPTION 1: 16-35mm f/4L IS + 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye
PROs: Offers both rectilinear and fisheye UWA depending on focal length, 16-35mm accepts filters
CONs: No rectilinear option wider than 16mm

-or-
OPTION 2: 11-24mm f/4L
PRO: This one goes to 11. :) Unusually wide for a FF rectilinear lens.
CONs: Expensive for a single lens, no filters, no fisheye option available, lacks 25-35mm coverage.

Just curious about what the opinions and use case scenarios for people would be 8)

50mp Cameras Coming in March [CR1]

HTML:
<p>We’ve heard a few times that there are going to be 2 version of the upcoming high megapixel camera, one with a low pass filter and the other without.  Nothing has changed on that front, as we continue to hear that will be the case.</p>
<p>We’ve been told a few times that this is coming in the first half of 2015, now we’re hearing the cameras will be announced in March. So by the sounds of things, don’t expect anything high megapixel related at CP+ in Japan next month.</p>

All footage was taken ' Wild Brown Bear ' - www.wbb.fi
A really amazing place in Europe to see these large predators in the wilderness.

It's far from perfect but it's a great memento.

Upgrading lenses for college student

Hey everyone! I am college student on a very limited budget. I currently shoot with a Rebel XT and its original 18-55mm kit lens. I recently sold one of my old film cameras and a very slow 28-90mm lens. I plan on purchasing a 50mm 1.8 with that money. I was also thinking about selling my kit lens and buying a used EF 28-105 http://www.amazon.com/Canon-28-105mm-3-5-4-5-Standard-Cameras/dp/B00004YZQ8
Or buying a used EF 28-135
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006I53S/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687462&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00004YZQ8&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0KNZYNKJHD1ERYPWQQWX
I am not sure if this is a good idea or not, I do not have a lot to spend and I figured these lenses are probably better quality then my kit lens. I tend to shoot a lot of landscapes. I will use my 50mm 1.8 as my portrait lens. My work can be found here: http://photographsbystevenrussell.pixieset.com/russell/ It is important to note that I also currently have a 80-200mm EF lens, however I do not used this much. Maybe I could sell both the kit and 80-200mm for something better?

Used Gear stories....

Hi everyone...

I know there are tons of places for used gear. I have had experience with Ebay, Fred Miranda, Craigslist, Canon Direct, Lens Authority, KEH, B&H and Adorama...Where do you get from?

I have had all good to great experiences with all. Paypal offers some security (except if you want use the gift option to save that 3%) for FM, and POTN transactions. When buying on ebay, you have protection from both Ebay and then Paypal, if you pay using them. Ebay's "item not as described" in my opinion can be very biased against the seller, if ebay doesn't bite, then paypal will most likely side side the buyer. The actual stores such as B&H, Adorama, KEH and Lens Authority all have pretty decent return policies.

As everyone knows, use common sense when dealing with less secure transactions such as craigslist (meeting up someone with $1000 cash for a lens that you've never met can be a bit scary). I have gotten good results on CL. Living in NYC, there are lots of buyers and I can save the fees and shipping troubles. Downside is not much protection. I used normal caution such as asking for Ebay/Facebook/Flickr references just to make sure the person actually exists. I also figure for higher end lenses, it is very unlikely the person will not have a website or flickr site. I also try to gather personal email address or phone number and whatever I can get in the event that things turn south.

Please share your used equipment experiences...Good or bad.

What to take to Iceland ?

Hey everyone! It's been a few years that I'm on CR's forum but I haven't posted anything yet.
Another thing, Im French, english is not my mother tongue! :P

Im going next July in Iceland for a 2 weeks 4wd trip. (south, west and north)
I'm planning to do a lot of landscapes, long exposures and some astro if possible. I will do quite a lot of hiking and I dont want to get more than 4 lenses. I do not consider to only get a zoom lenses (I used to have a 24-105 for quite a while). I dont mind to just get primes over zooms.

I really love wide and angle. Most of my shot are done at 16mm or so.

I currently have a 6D with:

- Tokina 17mm f3.5 AT-X (not the pro version) (just ordered it on Ebay so I can't say how well it performs)
- 16-35mm f2.8 II (I'm getting bored of this lens. Distords a lot)
- 45mm f2.8 TSE
- 50mm f1.2
- 135mm f2.0

I am open to any suggestions but I wanted your thoughts about those lenses and combos:
I only move to primes with: tokina 17mm + canon 24 1.4 + 50 1.2 + 135 f2.0
or I stick to my old 16-35 f2.8 II + 50 1.2 and 135 f2 ?
What about getting the 17mm TSE + 1.4 extender and the 50&135 ?

If you've been to Iceland, what did you take ? What was your more used focal length or lens ?

Thanks! ;D ;D
