Sigma 150-600 Sport/7D mk2 Issue

Hi All,

Anyone use this combination yet? I just received the 150-600 and it works fine at lengths below 400. Above 400, I get distorted images and camera errors. The pics are off of LV, one at 400mm, and the other just slightly more.

The lens works fine on my 7D mk1, so I don't think it's a lens problem. But the 7D2 works with all my other lenses.

So was wondering if anyone has this combination working. Or if is the combination of a newly released camera and a newly released lens that are not quite compatible yet.

Thanks

Ross

Review: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II

HTML:
<p>Bryan at the-digital-picture.com has completed his review of the brand new Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens.</p>
<p><strong>From TDP

</strong><em>“The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II is in an elite class of lenses, capable of producing prime-grade image quality at all available aperture and focal length settings. Put a very useful focal length range into a ruggedly-built, pro-grade lens with fast and accurate AF, very effective image stabilization and very impressive image quality and it is destined to be a very popular model. I highly recommend this lens….” </em><strong> <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-100-400mm-f-4.5-5.6-L-IS-II-USM-Lens.aspx" target="_blank">Read the full review</a></strong></p>

Backlit subject focus problems with 300 2.8 II

Hi all,

I am actually in disbelief that I have to even post this question as I have to ashamedly admit to shaking my head on more than one occasion at some of the silly questions I see online - but now I am guilty of the same thing!

Nevertheless I am having real problems with what I assume is poor focus with my 300mm 2.8 II on a 5D3. I have never AFMAd this lens and I am sure that will be the first bit of advice given but it has always been razor sharp with and without teleconvertors since the day I bought it. I am taking pics of backlit squirrels at shutter speeds between 1/250 to 1/1000. They are often pretty stationary while they eat and my lens is well supported (though not on a tripod). I usually use my 300mm with a 2x teleconverter at 1/500 and very rarely get one that isnt sharp. When i took a few shots of subjects that were front lit the lens appeared extremely sharp as usual but as soon as I took a shot of the squirrel the results were almost consistently out of focus/blurry (though not obvious motion blur). I am using a single focus point on the eye (which is dark anyway and also in shade). Has anyone else experienced focus problems with backlit subjects and have any advice?

Cheers, Kris

7D2 and cases #5 & 6

So far I have found only one thing that makes no sense. In Cases 5 and 6 the manual states AF auto point switching is disabled in single point AF mode which makes sense. Of course this would apply to any case if you activated it. As you can see in Cases 1 to 4 it is on zero.

The manual and the AF setting guide PDF both state AF auto point switching is active in expanded and zone. Zone makes sense because you can see the AF points actually switching. In expanded mode the points surrounding the centre point are assist points. They are not switching. In fact they all illuminate together when AF lock is achieved in AI Servo.

I read a few things and did some tests. In single shot, expanded and single point you can actually see adjacent points light up sometimes. If one did, you took the shot you and view in DPP later you can see both the centre point and the adjacent AF point that assisted are red. Same thing on your LCD.

In AI "FOCUS" and expanded you can move the camera around and see the assist AF points light up now and then but the centre point always lights up as well. The adjacent point is still an assist point as far as I can tell.

In AI Servo all points are AF points are active and as I said they all light up when AF is achieved. So I don't get how the AF points are switching in expanded when in either AI Focus or Servo. I don't think too many people use AI Focus anyway so AI Servo is the one I'm actually questioning.

"Show unread posts" no longer work as expected

I've gotten used to check the two top links ("Show unread posts since last visit" and "Show new replies to your posts") to keep up-to-date with the forum activity, but a while ago, I noticed that I saw very few new posts this way - very odd with the CR community.
Today I found that checking the two links does not work as usual, and as expected for me.

If I click the "Show unread posts" the board SW claims that there is no new/unread posts, but if I go in a check, say, Rumors > EOS Bodies, several threads show up with unread items.

I would really appreciate if we could get the old behaviour back.

First 7D Portraits

Some portraits of my son from my first session using my new 7D. I must say, it's a massive upgrade from my Olympus E-410. So much easier to shoot! The first shot is in my apartment complex, and the others were taken at the East Square in Zhaoqing, China.

Where are the new Canon 50mm and 85mm lenses?

I know Canon generally has the edge over Nikon in terms of lenses, but I do find myself coveting the Nikon 35/50/85 f1.8Gs. They're compact, lightweight, sharp, and have great IQ.

Canon has the 35 IS, which gets great reviews, but where's the new 50mm or 85mm? I shoot with a 24-70 II and 70-200 IS a lot, and while I love the high IQ of the Sigma 35A and 50A, I prefer my primes to be lightweight alternatives to those huge zooms.

I know others feel differently, but I prefer the extra bit of speed (even though it's small) of the Nikon versions to IS, because I mostly shoot people, and they tend to move a lot—especially kids.

I haven't seen any rumors about these lenses for a while. Are they even in the pipeline? If not, I wonder why not?

The New 24mm Pancake Lens

I purchased this lens about a week ago, and I noticed upon attaching it to my camera, it was an extremely tight fit. I've search google to see if this is common for this type of lens (pancake lens), but I haven't been able to find any information.

Have anyone here on canonrumors noticed this "tight fit" on their camera body when using this lens?

I really like the picture quality that I get from this lens and would hate to return it. But I also don't want to strip the lens mount on my camera body.

Comparison: Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8 vs Canon 50mm f/1.8

HTML:
<p>PetaPixel has posted a comparison between the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 and the obvious clone the Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8. One of these lenses rentals for about $100, the other for $40 via ebay (though prices have risen with all the press its getting).</p>
<p><strong>From PetaPixel</strong>

<em>“All in all, I’ve gotten some marked differences between the two shot under exact circumstances. Today’s tests aren’t anything fancy, and not the “hands-on, on set scenario” that I like, but they do give some input, so I thought I’d share. And I will go so far as to say the Yongnuo is aesthetically the better lens.”</em></p>

Revisiting the EOS-1D C For Your 4K Video Needs

HTML:
<p>Andrew at EOSHD recently purchased a used Canon EOS-1D C for about half the price of what they were at launch. A lot of people had a hard time swallowing the $11,000 price tag, but at $6000, is it a worthwhile investment? People have always raved about the 4K image quality of the EOS-1D C, and that hasn’t changed. Now that it can be had for half as much, maybe more people will take the plunge.</p>
<p><strong>From EOSHD

</strong><em>“The 1D C when I reviewed it was torture to be honest… I didn’t have long with the camera and although I was absolutely in love with the image I knew I couldn’t justify the £10,000 it cost to own, but the kicker was that it had so many shortcomings ergonomically and a rather awkward codec. Why not put this image in a Cinema EOS C300-style body? Having it in the 1D X housing is a mixed blessing. On the one hand there’s no better stills camera than this and no better weather sealing. The build quality is 100% pro level, you could rent it out to friends and not worry about it falling apart with tough handling in unfriendly environments”</em></p>

Samsung NX-1, after their fridge, microwave and telephone, the camera, too?

I like the Lens Rentals reviews and blogs. There are more cameras going through different phases of destruction through their hands than anybody else's. Now Roger Cicala has taken the top-of-the line Samsung mirrorless and measured some variables against the Nikon 7100 with a similar size sensor.
His conclusion: This is a serious new player in the field of professional photography.

Its magnesium alloy body is weather sealed which might mean whatever since there are no norms according to which an electronical device could be defined as 'weather sealed'.
It most certainly has the highest pixel count on an APSc sensor which is the only back-lighted unit that big on the market. Due to its immense processing power it can shoot 15 fps continuous up to 78 high quality JPGs or 21 RAWs. It does 4K video no sweat. Battery life is promised to be 500 shots.

Autofocus has more points than anyone else with 205 phase detection points and 153 cross type sensors.
That is a lot of points! They claim the AF speed to bee 0.055 seconds, not specifying with which lens.

The touch screen is a million pixel Super AMO LED and the electronic VF has 2.3 million pixels.

Whoever is making their lenses seems to be doing a good job as in Roger Cicala's test it performed as well as the best Nikon lens of similar specs.

What's the catch?
The Korean hi-tech monster seems to have taken a new approach on how the digital camera/video machine should be constructed. You do remember when they took on iPhone when nobody would think it possible? Now they are seriously threatening Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fuji, all facing the shrinking markets with their half arsed innovation.

Read two similar articles yesterday, one from the USA, the other from the UK, about this year setting records for customer returns online and in person. Apparently there is a cottage industry surrounding this activity, with some companies simply liquidating trucks full of returns, selling them to brokers who eventually get them online and into lower tier retail shops.

But according to the WALL STREET JOURNAL, some of the online and big-box giants resell 70% of returns after a quick going over.

Does this make seasoned gear purchasers avoid buying after Christmas--EVEN FROM BIG NAME, AUTHORIZED DEALERS? Seems much more likely to get a lens or something else that has been played with and bounced around during deliveries.

And when we see deals from lesser-known companies online, sometimes mentioned here or at CPW, are we seeing the items that are being brokered out?

I also wonder if the same applies to CPW "Street Price" items, where returns that are deemed fine except for packaging get sold at sometimes big discounts?

Infrared

I couldn't find a thread dedicated to infrared photos, so I thought I'll start one. I'm an absolute beginner in this field - recently I borrowed a converted camera to try this out, and I guess I'll get one of my own soon.

In the meantime here are a few images :-)

Enjoy,
Stephan

Could you explain to me which 24-70mm lens has less distortion?

Can anyone with a good understanding of MTF charts and actual field experience share how the three 24-70mm lenses compares to each other in terms of distortion (especially at wide end)? I have been using the 24-70mm f2.8L I for more than 4 years but sometimes borders sharpness and distortion particularly at the wide end annoy me so, I would like to know if the 24-70mm f/2.8L II or the 24-70mm f4L IS offer more controlled distortion.

Most appreciated!

Focus asymmetry - Canon 50mm 1.2 L

A few weeks ago I picked up a Canon 50mm 1.2 L from another local photographer at a decent price, $1050. The lens appears to be in good condition and I'm using it on my 5D3.

I intend to use this lens for portraiture at about 4-6 feet, with the aperture wide open. Since this will require very accurate focus, I conducted some of my usual autofocus tests in that distance range using the various autofocus points in the viewfinder of the 5D3. All tests were done wide open, so focus shift with aperture changes would not be an issue.

The center focus point works great with no AFMA needed. Accuracy is within one inch at 5 feet and very repeatable!

Unfortunately, the peripheral focus points tend to front focus. The farthest point to the right will front focus by about 4-5 inches. The top one, about 3-4 inches. The left and bottom points front focus by about two inches. I use that farthest right point a lot since I hold the camera vertically and place that point on the subject's eye. You only have about a two inch depth of field at 5 feet, at F/1.2.

As a control, I ran the same tests with my Canon 85mm 1.8 and all points were within one inch. (Love that lens.)

I will probably send the L lens in to Canon for calibration. I'm planning to call on Monday and ask if I should also send the body with it.

Anyone run into this before or have an idea what the problem is? Anything I can do to help Canon diagnose and correct the problem?

Thanks!

6D autofocus point issue any one have this?

So I've had my 6D going on 2 years now about a month and a half back the farthest right AF point stopped working. Its tries to focus but hunts for a really long time. I have tried several other lenses and all the other points are pretty snapy but not this far right point. I have tried cleaning the contacts and updating to the newest firmware with no luck. I'm thinking I'm going to have to send it into canon for service unless I need to clean dust off the sensor or something?

1DX Body Panel Fitment Question - Worried About Weather Sealing

Since I bought my 1DX in June of this year I've had to send it in to Canon a total of five times. Every time I send the camera in, Canon Canada CPS (platinum member) sends it back with more problems than it fixes.

This latest round of problems are threefold:

1) There is now dust on the inside of my viewfinder eyepiece that was not there before. I sent the camera in for my Transmissive LCD being out of alignment with my focus points. They obviously didn't clean anything before putting it back together.

2) They had removed the rubber hand grip for the vertical/portrait orientation, and they obviously contaminated the adhesive of the grip because it no longer sits down completely and will most likely start peeling the first time I get the camera wet or it goes from cold to hot and condensation gets in there.

3) My main concern. Also near the vertical/portrait shutter they've taken apart the body. Right next to the shutter button the body splits into three pieces, with a small thin metal piece in between the two main body panels. I had a piece of 3M invisible shield tape running overtop of all three panels to protect against knocks and scratches when I'm on the ground or rest the camera on something. The Canon technician must have lifted the piece of invisible shield to get into the camera, but when he put everything back together he actually closed the camera up with the portion of tape he peeled up hanging in-between the body panels. I actually didn't notice this for close to a month after getting the camera back and I've since pulled the tape out. There's now a slight lip where the body panels do not fit completely flush anymore.

My concern is that since there is this lip between the body panel pieces, is there a chance the camera is not properly weather sealed?

I loathe to send the camera back to Canon at this point. I'm trying to learn whether this is something I can live with and not worry about when I use the camera as it was intended to be used.

I'm attaching some pictures of the raised lip.
