7D2's BG-E16 weather sealing?

I was reviewing a picture of the BG-E16 in advance of buying a 7D2 and noticed what appeared to be a rubber gasket around the part of the grip that extends into the battery compartment of the 7D2. I haven't seen such a gasket on any previous battery grips, and I've known it to be a strong weakness to a camera's weather sealing if using a grip.
Does this mean we finally have some level of weather sealing guaranteed even with the grip?

Here's the picture I'm referencing of the BG-E16

And here a BG-E11 for the 5D Mark III that definitely does not have the gasket:

Seems pretty exciting to me.

Sony Sensors Coming to Canon DSLRs? [CR1]

HTML:
<p>Canon has long used Sony sensors in a lot of PowerShot cameras over the years, but never has Canon used a Sony sensor in a DSLR.</p>
<p><em>“Canon will use Sony’s new 46mp sensor as the 3rd party launch partner, maybe a little after Sony releases it in a camera of their own. Sony and Canon are partnering on many upcoming products – most recently the G7X being a prime example. Canon will use their own CFA / processing and will make a big point of colour accuracy.”</em></p>
<p>I have received this information a few times over the years, but nothing has never come to fruition, so I’ve never lent much credence to it. I would imagine joint ventures on something as expensive as sensor manufacturing would help lower costs for companies and perhaps customers as well. It’s definitely possible, but I wouldn’t write it in stone yet.  If Canon does the manufacturing of the sensor can they put their own technology into a Sony sensor, such as Dual Pixel AF?</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.dpreview.com/articles/7079726133/photokina-2014-canon-interview-mirrorless-in-the-very-near-future" target="_blank">Remember the recent Canon interview with DPR</a>.

</strong><strong>Q:</strong> Canon released two cameras at Photokina – the EOS 7D Mark II and PowerShot G7X. One thing we’ve learned is that the sensor in the G7X is not made by Canon. Does this represent a new philosophy at Canon?

<strong>A:</strong> We select the best sensor, whoever the manufacturer is. That’s our policy.</p>

Sigma 35 Art and the USB dock - calibration tips appreciated

Hey all, I've rented the Sigma 35 Art for a test run soon. I also rented the USB dock to be to able to dial-in the focus on my 5D3.

It hasn't come in yet, but I have a limited amount of time (perhaps one evening) at home to use the USB dock before I head out on a trip where I won't have a computer with me. Do you have any tips / lessons learned on how to best go through the entire process of using the dock, taking test shots, etc.? How similar is the process/workflow to on-board AFMA?

Thanks,
A

A shot my wife grabbed while I was shooting the bride and groom

Wanted to share one of my favorite shots from 2014 - that my wife took - while I was shooting a wedding on Michigan ave in Chicago, IL. She said she was trying to get some blur action behind us, then saw this crazy vehicle coming and was frantically adjusting her camera to try to capture the madness. She got her settings just in time. And for reference also attached is the shot I took - not great. Wifey showed me up.

Canon to Target The GH4 With New DSLR Type? [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that Canon will be directly targeting the Panansonic GH4 at NAB 2015 in Las Vegas this spring. The new camera will  have a 1″ sensor, shoot 4K and will be very portable, which sounds like <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/12/more-on-the-coming-4k-camcorder-cr2/" target="_blank">similar specs to an upcoming camcorder</a>. This little camera will have a removable viewfinder and grip and will most likely be small enough to be mounted to drones and other like devices.</p>
<p>The term “a different style DSLR” was used when describing this camera, but I’m not sure what sort of lens mount the camera would have, EF? EF-S? EF-M? Something new? A DSLR with a 1″ sensor? <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/12/opinion-does-cinema-eos-mark-the-end-of-high-spec-canon-dslr-video/" target="_blank">I wrote a few days ago that I didn’t think Canon would care much about this market</a>, which I guess was wrong, as this comes from a solid source. I do hold on to the idea that the professional cinema market being where growth is going to come from. We’re hoping for more information in the coming weeks.</p>

All I Want For Christmas...

Hi there

Just yesterday I read my monthly photographers magazine and there was a review on the all new Nikon D750. The spec-list matched 100% with the camera I'm waiting for Canon to release somewhere near (Nikon released 5 full-frames in the last year!).

The idea is clear, pick a Canon 70D, put a full-frame sensor in it, add a few extra focus points in it and you're done. Canon may brand it like the Canon 6D Mark II, but anyway I wan't to have it soon!

If I hadn't spent all the effort (and money) to get familiar with the Canon eco-system I would have switched already. I started in photography in 2006 with a 400D, Canon EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 II (which is still my only and main DSLR) but in the years I've invested into EF lenses and a flash (Canon EF 50 f/1.8 II (2006 and 2009 (first one broke when dropped), Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM (2013), Canon EF 16-35 f/4.0L IS USM (2014), YN600EX-RT (2014)).

So, I think I followed the saying - invest in glass first - quite well, but now I would like to attach a nice body to it without buying an "old" and expensive 5D mark III nor in a non-dual pixel 6D.

Are there other "prosumers" feeling the same way?

Kind regards

quattie

buying advice: canon 85mm f1.2 II or f1.8?

Hi all, I'm here again with a buy question: lots of online reviews state that the 85mm f1.8 is nearly identical to the f1.2 II in terms of image quality when stopped down to f2. It even focuses faster than the L version. All that the f1.2 version has going for it seems to be that it is very sharp wide open, and has slightly better sharpness and contract than the f1.8 version. Again, money is not an issue here. Is the f1.2 II worth my money with nearly identical visuals and even slower focus, to be offset with f1.2 for low light conditions? Let me know your real-world thoughts! Thanks!

What's the point of CPS - Silver level?

I've been urged by so many Canon folks to join CPS, even if just the free Silver level. So, I finally did.

I looked into CPS Gold and Platinum, and I might upgrade at some point in the future, but for the moment I just went with Silver.

The expedited repair time doesn't seem to make a difference because Canon seems to send gear back as "finished" sooner than the amount of time listed without being a member.

The 24 hour hotline doesn't strike me as something many people who would be a member of CPS would need to use (maybe I'm wrong on that).

I just don't really get the Silver level. Gold, Platinum, and Cinema all have benefits that make sense to me, but it seems Silver is more or less just about using minor benefits for the purposes of data collection and mining (equipment owned, type of photography, etc.)

Is there something else to it? Are your repairs looked at more closely when you send stuff in or anything? Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining - I realize that you get what you pay for - I'm just curious if I'm missing the point of being a Silver level member.

teleconverter

never owned one or used one, i have a 70-300L on my canon body , i use to have the 100-400 but its gone and maybe in a year from now ile get the new 100-400 but as for now what would be my best quality 1.4 teleconverter to use? or should i just crop my photos? this will be mainly for airshows since i need that extra reach.

Sensor life

Hello.
Is there something like 'sensor hours' before it goes bad? After a certain amount of clicks the shutter mechanism needs to be replaced but how about sensor?
Before video I am not sure if this mattered but now with so much video being shot on DSLR does the sensor go bad after a certain usage?
thx for any input!

Sigma 120-300 f2.8 Sport

I just picked up a like-new copy of this lens, and so far, am loving it.
One the positive side:
1. Solid, Beautiful lens.
2. Image quality is great!
3. Zoom is a huge advantage over prime 300. I can cover home plate and first base from the same location.
4. Internal focusing, and zooming.
On the negative:
1. Heavy, more than a 300mm f2.8 prime.
2. Focus does not seem quite as fast, well vs my Canon 70-200 f2.8, which is VERY fast.
3. Zoom ring requires some effort. You can't spin it with one finger. it's big.

Yet another DXO Interpretation Time video with Tony Northrup

Tony Northrup, at it again, on the notion of using FF lenses on crop bodies. This one touches all the bases -- DXO P-MPix resolution comparisons, filling the frame vs. cropping with wildlife, why cramming pixels in higher densities is awesome, etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDbUIfB5YUc&list=PLBE338967F8DB7F2A

He's been on a steady clip lately -- one per week or so. The thought of Tony Toni Tone knocking out a "here's how the world works" every week kinda chills my blood.

(As always, I post these hoping for a proper group skewering. I eagerly await Neuro's rebuttal web-series, entitled "I am the anti-Tony", but it hasn't happened yet.)
