Now, if this were to be applied to full frame...

A 48MP image from a 12MP full frame sensor (for example) could allow larger sensor pixels with much improved ISO performance and/or dynamic range for landscape and indoor photography. Not for action photography, I don't know if a tripod would be a requirement, but I presume so.

Extender EF 2X III Help

I bought 2 X Mark III extender on ebay to use with a 300mm f2.8 II (which I haven't bought yet) and tried it out on my 5dMarkIII and 7dMarkII with my 70-200mm f2.8 lens. No autofocus at any aperture. I checked the autofocus on the lens and it was on. Did I make a mistake in my assumptions that it would work on these cameras? or is something wrong with the extender. I use my 1.4 extender and it works fine. The 2X extender looks immaculate with everything clean and the sensors bright and shiny. Any ideas would be appreciated.

4K Fixed Lens Camcorder Coming? [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that a 4K fixed lens camcorder is coming in the early part of 2015. Such a product would probably fit in with CES as a consumer product announcement. We’re told the camera is called the XC10, and it will have similar ergonomics to the EOS C100, but it will have a fixed lens.</p>
<p>It’s possible this could come at NAB, but we expect the 4K Cinema EOS C300 Mark II & an new flagship Cinema EOS product to be the star of that show in April.</p>

7D Mark-II: Could video capabilities be unlocked through firmware updgrades

The 7D-II video capabilities are getting bashed at the moment and rightly so when one considers what is available in other recent camera releases. I have to wonder though, surely the technology in the camera is capable of so much more. Considering that the 1D-C can shoot 4K with dual-DiG!C-5 would it not be reasonable to assume that the 7D Mark-II would be able to shoot 4K with dual-DiG!C-6?

Anyway, my speculation is that 4K video in the 7D-II could be unlocked in a firmware upgrade scheduled for after the release of more 4K-capable high end bodies? Perhaps Canon is still ironing out 4K video codec issues or perhaps it's that they simply are trying to maintain tiered product differentiation (aka crippling). Either way, my gut tells me that we will see a significant video functionality improvements with future firmware upgrades.

The Long and Short of it. 2 Photos from the same Place

I was always annoyed by the "zoom with your feet" statement. Sometimes you can't. I usually can't. At a recent baseball game I was allowed on the TV platform just past the outfield fence. It's marked 400 feet about 5 feet in front of me in the below 2 photos. I am standing on metal box about 10 feet wide 4 feet deep, and 7 feet high, no railing. The TV guy is next to me so I can't move much or shake the box.

Anyway, the long photo is a 7D with a 400mm f2.8 IS and 1.4X extender. The wide photo is a 5D and 8-15mm. Both photos have some cropping.

Do you have any similar pairs of photos taken from the same place without taking a walk? Let's see.

Dustin Abbott's "Review" of the Old Sigma 50/1.4

Quote below from Dustin Abbott in his review of the new Sigma 50/1.4 ART lens:

"I have heard a few report that this new ART lens is not much better optically than the older Sigma 50mm f/1.4? All I can say is…huh? They are not occupying the same time/space continuum as me. I got a copy of the previous Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for review a few months and frankly I hated it. All I saw was green fringing (focus consistency left a lot to be desired) and optics that just didn’t seem to sharpen up to a level I deemed acceptable until the lens was stopped down…a lot. It lacked microcontrast and had a general “dreamy”, soft look at wider apertures."

After reading Dustin's opinion above of the "old" Sigma 50/1.4 and his reasons for hating it, I was wondering if anyone else would like to see a more in-depth review of this lens from the same person? Don't know what you think of the magazine, but Popular Photography just raves on-and-on about it as being the sharpest 50mm lens they have ever tested (!). Not sure I buy that; most other reviewers pretty much agree with Dustin. Anyway, perhaps you could weigh-in if you would like Dustin to expand his current short review, good or bad. I vote "yes" ... always good to hear from him.

24-70L f/4 my new favourite lens?

I picked up a 24-70 f4 last week at London Drugs in Vancouver for $799. It seems like a good deal at that price. I've been putting off having a normal zoom for years but I think with this one I've found my match. For a full-frame L lens it's compact and relatively light, and very well balanced with the 6D. I've been looking for something particularly for outdoor activities, hiking, skiing etc.

I have to spend a lot more time with it but first couple days I've really loved using it. And the macro function so far seems very worthwhile for close up shooting.

Here are a few first shots from this week around Kimberley, British Columbia.

72" umbrella... what to look for and what to avoid?

I know softies can give better catch lites, and umbrellas may not look as professional as studio lighting... but I'm cheap andi havea chance to get a 72 inch all white for $25 or a black back silver front for $35... (newer brand which can be a draw back) but once had newer stuff before and it doesn't prevent me from going back to that well.

So... any caveats, 72 is just unwieldy, don't buy the all white, don't buy the black/silver, set the 600ex rt to manual focal length and set it at...

I prefer not to throw away good money on something that seems like a good idea but isn't...

MagMod - MagSphere looks interesting!

This looks interesting. I took the plunge with a $79 pledge for one of each. (I already own the basic MagMod kit.)

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/spencerboerup/magsphere-and-magbounce-flash-diffusers-by-magmod

I'm particularly interested in the sphere where they say it costs less than a stop of light power. I already own/use the GF Sphere but it definitely cuts the light power more.

Lens Fungus - Advice Needed

Hello Folks - My favorite lens - the Canon 100mm Macro (Non L) is showing Fungus in the inside glass element. I appeared about 2 years back. I sent it to canon for clean up (costed me around $100 with CPS membership). It came back neat. But after this summer, it re-appeared. I don't know if its worth spending another $100 again. So I tried to trade it in Amazon. But they are sending it back saying the lens is in unacceptable condition. I did not find it really bad yet, its somewhere in the starting stage I believe. So far I don't see any impact on the image quality as such. Also my other lens are not impacted so far. I would like to get the advice of the knowledgable folks here on what to do next. My options I think are
1. Get a new 100mm non L lens. Is the lens prone to fungus or its just that the piece I have has some issues?
2. Get the L version. Is it safe to assume the weather sealing of the L will prevent fungus to some extend? Assuming no one will give anything for my current lens, this is a bit of an additional expense for me. I don't make money from photography..Just crazy about taking pictures :)
3. Live with the current lens.

Are there any other places where I can trade it in (BH and Best buy does not offer much, and I am not sure they will also reject it). I don't want to sell it to an individual knowing that the lens has a problem.
Also any precautions required for the other lenses and the camera?
thanks for your help.

Interesting sales data from B&H

As I'm not currently in the market for a new camera body, I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to many of the sales that were going on for black Friday and cyber Monday. Nevertheless, it did seem as though a number of retailers had better deals on Nikon gear, and I was curious to see if it generated any more sales. This morning, B&H sent out a link to see their sales ranking data - as far as I can tell, it is only for cyber Monday sales.

I don't know if this says anything about the state of the market, but I did find it interesting nonetheless.

Canon g7x and iPad Air

I have always shot RAW whenever I use a camera that allows it. When on trips I copy the files to my iPad air (ios 8) both for viewing and as a backup. I have done it with a 5DMkiii and an S95 without problem. However, I recently purchased a G7X and tried shooting RAW and importing to iPad. Strange things have happened. If I shoot both raw and jpg the iPad goes through the motions of importing the files (but quicker than would be expected) and no files are viewable in camera roll. If I shoot just raw it really gets weird. There are variations on this but generally if I shoot with a freshly formatted card and import it will go quickly through the first pic on the card and more slowing thru the rest. When I check camera roll the first pic is not there but the others usually are. If I should more pics and leave the old pics on the card sometimes it will successfully import all of the new batch of pics and sometimes it will still skip the first one of the new batch. It is not consistent. The raw pics that are successfully imported can be viewed on the iPad so viewing capability of a new raw format is not the issue. The issue seems to be the inability for it to consistently import all raw photos from the G7X. Anyone have any experience with this or thoughts on how to fix it? I would love to keep shooting just raw and importing them into the iPad.
