5D Mk 3 'time remaining' display error???

Hi,
This has got me puzzled.
The 'time remaining/time elapsed' display seems to be inaccurate.
This doesn't seem to impact on the recorded material in any way but there is probably a reason for it of which I'm not aware.
Shooting 1080x1920, 24, ALL-I. CF 120 16Gb fresh format. Time remaining display reads 22.09, record for 1 min as shown on the 'time elapsed' display, 'time remaining' display now reads 21.49! Huh? My basic maths thinks it should read 21.09.
What do I not know here?
Thanks from a newby.

Strange Behavior - Canon 5D iii memory

Hey!

I am new to the high end photographers guild of the Canon 5D iii
I bought my first 5D camera yesterday - also my first professional camera.

It is an amazing camera but there is something about it I cant get my head around. When taking photos I can hear the shutter go off. exposure and ISO is fine for a well lit location. I get the 2 sec preview of the picture I am taking. However it does not save to either my SD card (A Sandisk 64gb with write speed 10) nor does it save to the CF card (Sandisk Extreme 60mb/s 32gb)

Looking in to it, this seems to be a problem only when I am using the LCD Screen as a Viewfinder and not looking trough the eyepiece.

I have formated both cards. Set destination for saving the photos and skimmed the web for a full day straight. cant find an answer to this question nor can i find anyone that have had this issue before. I am completely lost

How do i fix this problem? Is there any seasoned professionals that might be able to help out? I would be very grateful!

Thank you for any response or feedback!

Crop camera upgrade

I have learned many things from this forum and now am seeking some specific advice.

In two weeks, I will travel to Tanzania for a month. During my time there, I plan to visit several national parks. With the opportunity to photograph unique wildlife, I'd like to ensure that I'm making the most of this experience. Consequently, I've pondered if I should upgrade my crop body to the 7D mark 2.

My current setup is as follows:
-Bodies: 5D mark III, 550D (T2i)
-Lenses: 17-40 f/4L, 24-105 f/4L, 70-200 f/2.8 mark II, 2X extender mark III, 50 f/1.4, 2 kit lenses (for the T2i)

I know that the 7D mark 2 is not commercially available yet, so I know that knowledge is somewhat limited. I am also posing this question under the assumption that I will be able to get it in my possession prior to traveling to Tanzania.

Furthermore, I've read the discussions about full frame versus crop with regard to resolving power and image quality. The 7DM2 is seemingly a worthwhile camera for wildlife photography. However, my wildlife photographing experience is limited. My niche is mainly landscapes, but I am very comfortable with advanced camera operations.

Based on that information: is it worth upgrading the crop body to the 7D2? Additionally, for those with safari experience, any advice on setup (e.g. body/lens combination, which gear to take or leave behind, etc.) is coveted. I do plan to utilize two bodies to avoid changing lenses due to dust hazards in the parks.

One disclaimer note: I am not a professional and this is not a photography trip. I would qualify myself as an advanced enthusiast that is hoping to use this experience return with some excellent wildlife images.

Thanks for your help.

Yongnuo YN600EX-RT now available for $186

I was extremely excited when the YN-E3-RT was released at a whopping $140, and the YN600EX-RT was announced.

Now seeing it available for $186 blows my mind. I was expecting it to be ~$250. Was anyone else looking forward to this flash?

Based off the reviews the YN-E3-RT (ST-E3-RT clone) which has even better features such AF Assist Beam, I think the YN600EX-RT could be a really interesting contender again the Canon OEM version.

Does "Banding" exist

the new crappy iMac 5K display got me thinking.

This iMac is 8-bit color (16.7 million) where monitors like the one I use are 1.07 Billion (10-bit color per channel)

To achieve an environment capable of 1 Billion plus colors, you need more than a monitor, you need a capable video card as well as you need applications capable of running 30-bit vs the standard 24. some earlier versions of Photoshop, for example were not 30-bit capable

A simple way of seeing if you are capable of 30-bit are images like this

10Bit-Test-Ramp.jpg

My monitor at work shows banding... at home it is crisp and clean gradient that is as smooth as butter.

Got me thinking. Always hear about the 5d MK III has banding, the Nikon D810 has banding... on and on.

Is this banding on the sensor, or like, in the image above, is it the LCD screen on back of camera, or even that pricey monitor that only handles 8-bits per channel

Not saying that issues may not exist, but would be curious if when people are doing reviews, pixel peeping images and the like, more quantitatively environmental variables were specified.

I have really seen no issues with banding with my 5D MK III, then again, most of the time I am in a 30-bit environment

Just food for thought

Battery recharge performance

I have the LP-E6 battery being manufactured in 2010. Recharge performance indicator shows one red square only, so according user manual I should consider buying a new one. However, I didn`t notice the battery has lower capacity in comparison with another one produced in 2012. Therefore I wonder what parameter camera evaluates for recharge performance. Isn`t it simple "planned obsolescence"?.

Not Another 6D vs 7DMKII Thread? well..... :D

First, i am not a pro, I have the 600D and planing on getting both of the 7DMKII and the 6D - when the cash available :D - for birds, action, astro, landscape, portraits, night and weddings\events photography.

I am still at 36K shots with mine, but am planning to keep it as a backup to the 7DMKII, i started trying to shoot birds recently when i got the 100-400, and once tried doing it with the 70-200, yeah AF is not that good for BIF, and even birds on trees, when there is a busy background the AF goes hunting too much, but i know that's the outcome of AI Servo and a small bird :P

I have two options, get the 7DMKII or the 6D first - i wish i can get both at once, yup self proclaimed GAS, and photography is only part of it :D - the thing is i can get both but i need a bunch of lenses with the 6D, as you can see in the sig, i don't have a FF wide lens, so a 24-70 f4 IS is duo with the 6D, also for astro i will get the samyang 14mm f2.8 and 24mm f1.4, i am still at milky way level, but that's enough for me now.

So, the question is, which to get first? we are going into winter so astro photography here will be on hold until april - as no milky way, and very cold weather in the desert - and for birds the season of migration is ending if not ended, but those are not the only factors, night events\weddings\portraits is a main reason to get the 6D, i have a flash, but that's not always an option, also landscape is an interest for me and wide lenses are not really wide with crop sensors.

70-200 2.8 II or 100 2.8L and 135 2 and 200 2.8

Hi,

I am getting 70-200 f2.8 II for the same price as the following set 100 f2.8L, 135 f2 and 200 f2.8. I currently own a 60D and am planning to purchase the 7DII once it is available here in my country. What do you think is a better buy - the zoom or the set of primes? I love to shoot my kid (a very active toddler, her ballet recitals, outdoor sports, etc) and wildlife.

Would love to get opinion from folks here.

Thanks.

Upgrade?

Hello All,
I need some advice. I've been using my 600d for a while now, and I don't know whether it's time for me to upgrade, or whether I ought to be practising my skills and stop thinking about gear.
You can see my photographs here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/michaelhooper/
What do you think? Would a 7d ii be a good idea? Or should I think about improving some other area of my photography?

Things that bug me about the 600d:
• I can't select the iso as exactly as I'd like. With the 400 5.6 I often want to shoot between 400 and 800 and I can't.
• I can keep the centre-dot on the birds ok, but they still often come out a bit out of focus. I'd say I'd get 1 in 20 in focus with a bird in flight. Maybe 1 in 5 are pretty good, but not good enough. 1 in 100 is tack sharp. I have no idea why it's such a lottery, and I've come to the conclusion that it's not me!
• At 800 iso I have very little dynamic range to play with, so if the bird is black and white I'm in trouble if the exposure isn't perfect.
• I only shoot in manual, and having a bit more customizability might be good. Certainly having a couple of definable presets would be very useful.

I'm also worried that having taken a lot of photos with it over the past three years (easily 100000+), that it's going to die on me anyway. It already works better with some gaffer tape. :) (It's surprisingly think plastic, and even sliding down a rock with it didn't get through the body, though it scraped quite a few millimetres from the corner. And the screen has little bits of white stuff in it, and has done for 2 1/2 years now. And the hot-shoe is a bit bent from said slide down a rock.)

I have the sigma 35 1.4 and the canon 400 5.6, and the 18-55 it came with, of course, though I almost never use it. I sometimes wonder if something in the middle would be useful! 100 2.8L? But I can't have everything and I'd rather stick to one or two lenses and get better at what they can do.

Thoughts? & Thanks!
Michael

40mm stm verses 35mm IS lens?

looking at either the 40mm pancake with the stm focus or Canon's 35mm f2 lens with IS. I don't have a Dual Pixel Auto-Focus camera at the moment, but I imagine the next ff upgrade I will. My question is the 40mm pancake with the stm focus a better option than having image Stabilization found in the 35mm IS for video work?

I have also read that stm (40mm) is not great with a follow focus unit?

any insights or opinions would be appreciated.

thanks, jeff

Hello FF!

I am living in Japan, and have noticed that second hand -5d markII's in mint condition are going for slightly less than
-6d's new (well, 150 Dollar slightly less...).
I am 'ready' to finally switch to FF (landscape photography caught on) and would like to ask you guys and girls which of the two afore mentioned cameras you would recomment to me (and why)?

Please keep in mind I don't care about AF, I just wonder if the -5d II would serve me better than the -6d?

Thanks a bunch!!

Okay, guess this is too boring like for you gearheads...?

How about this: Should I buy a -6d or wait for the 6d mark III?!
Will figure it out myself! Loosers!!

7Dii AF performance

After looking at the specs and reading the reviews I have no doubt that the 7Dii will be a massive improvement in AF over its predecessor (the 7D) - certainly if you own any of Canon's exceptional telephoto lenses. I own the 7D and a good copy of the Sigma 120-300 os (the latest version before Sigma introduced the S). As many others have previously noted - the auto-focus speed is reasonable (but certainly not Canon L fast) and often very inconsistent, especially in AI-Servo when tracking a target. This appears to be a weakness with the lens, as significant improvements were apparently made when the S version was introduced with the USB dock. In a perfect world I would sell it and buy a Canon 300 2.8 - at the moment, however, I am a graduate student and that is not possible.

My question is: do you think the 7Dii would provide any significant improvement in AF performance (speed and accuracy) with the Sigma 120-300, or would I be wasting my money?

70-200 f2.8 IS mk 2 with 2x extender

Just received my 70-200 today, to late to really test it as have been so busy, just know it works and focuses fast. A couple of questions, firstly is it any good with the 2x extender ( I have searched, this forum and others, Arthur Morris, birds as art on FM gets brilliant images with this combo ) others say the 100-400 (which I have) or similar gives better results. I also have the 1.4 mk3 extender and reviews say it performs well with the 70-200 f2.8 IS mk2. Second question, is there a strap that is capable of carrying this lens on a 5D3,either to my side or across my back ( as I saw a Nikon user recently using, though with a lighter lens, bigger camera) My usual method of carrying the 100-400 is to hold the lens as I am walking, I do not find this awkward most of the time but if walking with my dog it can be a problem.

Regards, Alan

"11-24mm f/4" vs The Holy Grail

Okay some people are complaining about 11-24mm being f/4 and not being at f/2.8 while others are complaining its price anticipated to be at 3,000$.

I really do wonder what you all think it would be like to compare it with the Nikon 13mm f/5.6 also called "The Holy Grail"

http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/13mm.htm

Quote:
- Nikon's suggested retail (rip-off) price was $8,229 in 1979, or over $24,000 in today's dollars.
- B&H advertised it at $5,569 in January 1987, or over $10,000 in today's money.

- The 13mm cost more than the no-longer-made 300mm f/2, which now sells for five-figures used.
- The 13mm was double the cost of the 300mm f/2.8 or twelve times the cost of the 16mm fisheye.

Recently sold for 24,500 US$ on ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/141433630285)

Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr-_KTLF_D4

What do you all think, can we compare these both or are both of them at a different league of their own?

Canon Announces CN20x50 Cine-Servo Ultra Zoom Lens

HTML:
<p><em>Canon introduces new 4K cine-servo, ultra-telephoto lens with world’s longest focal length</em></p>
<p>United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 16 October 2014 – Canon today bolsters its cine servo lens line-up with the new CN20x50 – a high performance, ultra-telephoto zoom lens for sport and nature TV production. Leveraging Canon’s long-standing and unparalleled expertise in lens design, the CN20x50 delivers superb image quality and exceptional creative control, and is the first lens of its type to combine a built-in 1.5x extender, class-leading 20x magnification and a removable servo drive, with a native 50-1000mm focal range that expands to a huge 75-1500mm.</p>
<p>Designed to be a portable solution for broadcast productions using super 35mm cameras – whether HD, UHD or 4K – the CN20x50 is a tool of unprecedented quality, versatility and usability. Featuring a completely removable updated servo drive unit that enables an agile shooting style that’s difficult to achieve with typical cine lenses, the new cine-servo lens helps to meet growing demands for Ultra High Definition (UHD) resolution sport and nature television production.</p>
<p><b>Versatile and reliable</b>

With productions today expected to shoot in demanding and unpredictable environments, a huge level of lens flexibility is required. For wildlife television, operators typically work in hostile and sensitive conditions which often necessitate shooting from extremely long distances, while sports productions typically require extremely high resolution for close-to-the-action stadium work. In both situations, operators require fast, reactive positional changes, shooting flexibility and nimble hardware that allow them to respond to changes in the scene.</p>
<p>Weighing just 6.6kg, the CN20x50 is conveniently portable and lightweight and offers an unrivalled focal length and zooming capabilities for its class. It enables sport and documentary crews to capture footage at a distance, while maintaining the highest quality throughout the zoom range. The lens’s huge zoom range also significantly reduces the volume of hardware that crews are required to carry, offering a superb solution for location shoots.</p>
<p>The latest in Canon’s cine-servo lens line-up, the CN20x50 is also user-friendly and robust. The design has been developed to ensure high levels of ruggedness and reliability, even in unforgiving broadcast environments – combining the finest quality optics with a weather-and-shock-proof construction that makes it suitable for use in the most hostile conditions when on location, to the same level as conventional Canon broadcast lenses.</p>
<p><b>Flexible operability</b>

Compatible with a wide range of cameras, the CN20x50 also supports communication between lens and camera and will be available in both EF-mount and PL-mount variants. The EF-mount version utilises Canon’s own system, while the PL-mount variant supports Cooke’s /i Technology standard. Both models feature a 12-pin serial connection for integration with typical broadcast equipment.</p>
<p>The focus ring rotation is 180 degrees, balancing the accuracy required for 4K imaging with the speed needed for broadcast use. In scenarios where every second counts – and operators only have one opportunity to capture a shot – high speed zoom, iris and simple focusing operation mean that even rapidly changing scenes can be captured with ease and accuracy.</p>
<p>The lens’ design supports a range of cinema and broadcast accessories including operational zoom and focus controls, matte boxes and 0.8- and 0.5-type gear module accessories such as follow focus units, to provide a truly versatile solution.</p>
<p><b>CN20x50 key benefits:</b></p>
<ul>
<li>Ultra-telephoto lens with class-leading focal length</li>
<li>Capture every detail in sports and nature TV broadcast</li>
<li>Achieve stunning shots in outstanding 4K quality</li>
<li>Enjoy a wide variety of shooting and expression</li>
<li>Portable and durable with intuitive operation</li>

Advice on photographing football (soccer for US people reading)

Hi all,

I wandering if you had any advice for photographing football, I have been shooting sports for yours but not done football. Now I have a local news paper asking me to get some images of a couple of games, primarily concentrating on one team.

My basic plan is to use 60d with sigma 150-500mm, 5d mk ii with my 70-200mm.

I am borrowing an other crop frame camera I planning to use as a remote with a 20-35mm if its low end and if it good enough replace my 5d mk ii (possibly using the 24-105mm) and using the full frame for remote.

My plan was to set up on the side line a approximately level with the edge of the 18 yard box. I was also thinking about doing some from one end of the pitch so that I can capture the players coming to me.

Thank you
