New model Phottix Odin announced

This looks good! It's the new model Odin and it has a very welcome focus assist lamp.

I'm increasingly admiring Phottix products, I wish I hadn't left it so long to get Odins which I've has for around 6 months now...they're awesome. (even without focus assist ;D)

The other very interesting Phottix announcement is for the TTL & HSS capable Indra 500 mono:

I've got to say an area of photographic gear that is evolving like crazy is lighting, all the way from speed-lights to studio gear, and most of the innovation is being spearheaded by China. I'm loving it.

GPS GP-E2 on 5DIII

Esteemed co-spirits
I'm in Japan right now and have bought the GP-E2 for geotacking my photos. It works like a dream BUT it takes a LONG time (around one second) to take a picture, and I fear that the actual picture is taken at the end of the period, so its quite impossible to time it accurately.
Have any of you similar experiences with this GPS unit?
Your input is very much appreciated.

Inexpensive standard walk around lens question

Often I don't want to carry the expensive 24-70II with me and pick an inexpensive lens. The use is generally street photography, or a gathering of friends, or a short trip.

For the past few months it had been the 40mm which was perfectly fine if somewhat limited. It only replicates one FL of the amazingly versatile zoom but doesn't offer any additional advantage.

So I made a shortlist of some choices that are within the 24-70 range, below $ 500 and have some unique advantage in addition to being a mere cheaper stand-in. None of them seem an obvious choice though (primarily due to the 35/1.4 being there, so if y'all can weigh in on one or the other or add other choices, I shall be much obliged.

1. 24mm f/2.8 IS (only as fast as the 24-70, but has IS- I don't own any other IS lens below 70mm, wider so overlaps less with my 35/1.4)
2. 28mm f/1.8 (cheaper and faster, but I am not sure of the IQ- if it is usable at f/1.8 and sharp at f/2.8 that should be good tho', FL too close to 35/1.4)
3. 28mm f/2.8 IS (same IS advantage, cheaper than the 24 IS, overlaps with my 35/1.4)
4. 35mm f/2 IS (arguably a very good lens, has IS, but overlaps too much with my 35/1.4)
5. 35mm f/2 (used)- (cheaper but again overlaps with the 35/1.4)
6. 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (old and not such great image quality, but cheap and has IS and is a zoom)
7. 24-105mm f/4L IS (slight advantage of range, but a bit too costly at >$ 600)
8. 24-70mm f/4L IS (included here as I have pre-ordered it with the 7DII and it might end up costing just $ 300, but completely overlaps with my 24-70II)
9. 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM (slow and I am not a big fan of STM- don't do video and prefer the speed of USM)

Thanks so much!

Any hints of a G5X?

Well, now that the G7X is out, effectively replacing the S1XX series, is there any hints of a G5X sister model?
I am thinking G7X with viewfinder?
Something like a G16 body, sensor and lens from G7X, but with a hybrid viewfinder like the Fuji X20. Add a fixed touch screen and eye sensor to shut it off when using the viewfinder. Keep WiFi and G16 handling. Now that would be a great camera.

Canon APS-C<Speedbooster<EF Lens. Possible?

Hi people!

I am sorry if this a stupid question but I have to ask in order to learn.

Is possible such a combination?: A Canon crop camera with a (I think not existing)speedbooster and any EF lens in order to gather the "extra" light the lens is providing and the sensor, due to its smaller surface, is not able to use. Would it improve APS-C sensor ISO performance?

Thanks in advance and sorry if it is a completly dumb question.

Canon Cinema EOS Captures Space In 4K For New IMAX® 3D Film

HTML:
<p><b>MELVILLE, N.Y., September 22, 2014</b> – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to announce that Canon Cinema EOS digital cameras and lenses have been selected by IMAX Corporation for an exciting mission to capture 4K footage in space. The cameras and lenses left Earth Saturday on a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft launched from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The equipment will arrive at the International Space Station, where astronauts will capture stunning 4K content for the upcoming new 3D film, tentatively titled <i>A Perfect Planet</i>, a presentation of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and IMAX Entertainment.</p>
<p>The IMAX production team selected Canon EOS C500 EF digital cinema cameras, Canon EOS 1D-C digital SLR cameras, and a selection of Canon Cinema Zoom and Prime lenses for the project. The EOS C500s will be paired with Codex recorders to capture 4K images.Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Toni Myers, the IMAX 3D space project will offer breathtaking, illuminating views of Earth from space, exploring mankind’s future on and off the planet. Renowned large format cinematographer James Neihouse serves as the film’s director of photography and trained the astronauts who will man the cameras while in orbit.</p>
<p>“Of the digital cameras we tested for spaceflight, the Canon EOS C500’s image quality was more film-like than the other systems,” said Neihouse. “The sharpness is superior to some of the larger sensors. And it is more user-friendly for the astronauts. We have a good track record with Canon cameras in space.”</p>
<p>“I am thrilled that the Canon Cinema EOS cameras we have selected launched to the International Space Station and our astronaut crews can now begin filming spectacular scenes for our new project,” said Toni Myers, who will produce, direct, write and edit the documentary film. “The lightweight, flexible Canon cameras produce remarkable imagery and are ideal for capturing scenes of our beautiful Planet Earth.</p>
<p>“When we launched the Cinema EOS product line, Canon hoped to inspire filmmakers to take their craft to new heights. We are honored that IMAX, Toni Myers, James Neihouse, and the astronauts took our challenge so literally. To have our cameras and lenses travel to space is an incredible cause for celebration. We look forward to this awe-inspiring film and pledge to continue to engineer products worthy of the next frontier-whether here on Earth or among the stars,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc.</p>
<p>IMAX’s 3D film will be shot over the course of the next year with multiple crews of astronauts conducting principal photography. The film is tentatively set for release in early 2016.</p>

used 300 f2.8 IS or new sigma 120-300 f2.8

Hi guys, I saw a used Canon 300mm f/2.8 IS (mark I) going for $3500. The Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 (new S version) is slightly cheaper. I need the 300mm reach at f2.8 (already have a 70-200mm f2.8, but with TC it becomes f4) so the ability to zoom on the Sigma doesn't really matter.

The Canon is older but the image quality is obviously a little better being a prime.
The Sigma is newer and will save me some money, but there's a little bit less sharpness at the edges. (Vignetting can be corrected in post so I don't mind that.)

I regularly print medium-sized prints (anywhere between A3+ to A2) so IQ is somewhat important (most regular clients can't tell the difference, they just like bright colors and great expressions). I guess the main question is, should I pay more for an OLD lens with slightly better IQ, or should I pay less for a newer lens and suffer a tad in IQ? Am I paying $500 more for a $20 difference in visual results? Thanks guys!

Papua New Guinea - Macro and Wide Underwater

Hello everyone,

I thought I would share my first of a few videos that will come from my recent travels to Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea. Great diving! Some of the best I have seen. Healthy reefs and great critters.

As always, comments and recommendations are always appreciated.

Gets the Job Done....Every Time

My Canon kit - It works. It does what I need it to do. It never fails me. Gets the job done....every....single....time.

Having now owned and played with multiple systems from different companies, I am truly learning the value of the Canon ecosystem.

With as much chatter going on as there is about all of Canon's deficiencies and shortcomings, I felt as though it would be refreshing to bring a different view and experience to the table. Sorry if this has already been stated elsewhere, but this is my two cents that I've come to realize as of late.

Without fail, I have never gotten frustrated with the functionality of my kit to the point where I felt that something else could serve me better in every facet of my shooting.

Having now owned an A7r rig, multiple modern Fuji rigs, and played with a Nikon rig, I have come to the conclusion that nothing really beats the overall functionality, completeness, and usability of my Canon kit.

Yes yes, I know. Canon Fanboy, right? Wrong. If that were the case, I wouldn't have spent my last 6-8k on trying out other company's offerings. To a fanboy, that is blasphemy.

Anyhow, I have found that comparing IQ between all of the rigs, I am generally splitting hairs. There are a finite number of instances where I actually look at an image and say "wow, I am so glad I own ABCD rig because the images are so much better than the rest."

The differences for me at least, are in functionality and feature set....not IQ. Sure, IQ on some levels can be slightly improved with my Canon rig. But assuming I properly expose (or get close) and properly compose (or get close), there is nothing IQ-wise that my Canon rig cannot accomplish.

The only reasons left when I really think about why it is I enjoy using other rigs are due to feature sets. For instance, A7r, allows me to use my TSE lenses with a very good manual focusing aid feature set. A smaller plus would be the increase in resolution and slight bump in DR (not as important to me). The xt-1 is super compact for what it brings to the table and has an even better manual focusing aid feature set (prefer it for all my old lenses that do not require electronic communication with the body). However, that's where the positives end for me when comparing them to my Canon DSLR.

For me, the autofocus is still way too unreliable and slow on every mirrorless camera I have owned or used. Battery life has been consistently atrocious across the board. Ergonomics are almost acceptable at best. And the worst part? The ecosystems range from barely starting to develop, or mildly developed and still lacking significantly. All of these things taken together make for systems that involve a lot of compromise. It makes them very niche/specific use tools.

This brings me back to my original point, the Canon rig that never fails. Slight shortcomings, I will admit, are present. However, as a general rule in my experience, it has always gotten the job done and I have never felt it lacking to the point where I looked to another system and felt that I could do better.

The one truth I have found, the grass is almost never greener....

Review: Canon PowerShot SX520 HS

HTML:
<p>The first review for the new Canon PowerShot SX520 HS has been posted on Photographyblog.com. I’m actually a big fan of this series of Canon superzooms. They’re light weight, easy to use and have pretty good image quality. I usually recommend these to the casual, yet eager photographer.</p>
<p><strong>From PhotographyBlog

</strong><em>“Cramming a big 42x optical zoom into a compact body with a small-ish sensor is never going to make for the best of bedfellows if the ultimate in image quality is your aim, but we’d argue the 16 megapixel <span class="__pl_active" data-index="5">Canon</span> PowerShot SX520 HS is more about convenience, flexibility and value for money – each of which it largely delivers on.”</em><strong>

Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC Gets First Test

<p>Matt Granger got to spend some time with the recently announced Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC lens for full frame cameras. We think he’s one of very few that’s been able to take images and video with the lens.</p>

300 2.8 non-IS VS either of the IS versions...

First things first... I am not a pixel peeper. At all, if I can't see a "defect" at normal viewing sizes (corner softness, chroma, etc..) then it doesn't exist as far as I'm concerned.

I've never shot with the non IS, but I have rented a IS v2... Which was phenomenal. I mean stunning. I also used it with a 2x v3 converter, and even that was spectacular.

I'm also big on IS to eliminate any shaking, mostly during panning or action shots. I often use slower shutter speeds (1/60 give or take) usually to achieve motion blur behind the subject. Yes, I'm quite aware that IS doesn't stop the subject, etc....

Now onto it.. Will I easily notice a difference if I were to start regularly using a non IS versus buying one of the IS versions?

I have a chance to get a very clean 9.5/10 300 2.8 local to me for a reasonable price.

Let me hear it folks!
