R1 CFexpress Type B cards

A bit late to the party but I'm looking to buy 128GB CFexpress Type B cards for a R1.

As I'm the "don't put all your eggs in one basket" type I'm looking to get 128GB cards that has been my size standard since 2015.

I've narrowed it down to:

- $250 — Lexar DIAMOND 4.0 (LCXEXD4128G-RNENG) 3,200 MB/s
- $135 — Delkin POWER G4 (DCFXBP128G4) 805 MB/s
- $130 — ProGrade Gold (PGCFX128GBPBH) 250 MB/s

I'll be using this with mostly EF L lenses such as

- EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM
- EF 500mm f/4L IS USM
- EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM
- EF 200mm f/2L IS USM

Thanks for the ffeedback.

Canon continues to push forward with a Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L and RF 24mm f/1.2L

In this patent application (2026-013481), Canon has several interesting embodiments that we will explore here. These embodiments look very much like something I'd expect to see in a production halo RF 35mm f/1.2 prime. Lots of elements and dual focus groups to maximize the speed of focus, and also assist in eliminating any focus breathing […]

Website Fun

The site might be a bumpy, as it probably has been.

The site was compromised because the previous host are a bunch of (insert swear words). I am now the server admin. It's a race to the bottom in the managed hosting world. No more. It's now my box with 100% control. I'm glad I got to go through it for the first time. Sometimes you need a slap in the face.

We should have the mess cleaned up soon.

Farewell EOS R. Bonjour EOS R6 mkiii or R5 mkii?

I have had my EOS R for about 7 years+ now. It has been a wonderful camera, serving my needs to photograph portrait and landscapes. Loved the build quality and bringing me into the mirrorless world.

Recently however I've found myself doing a lot more Sports photography (Swimming, Water polo, Baseball...). And managed to get some decent shots, but boy is it a painful and frustrating experience.

The AF is unreliable, the fps is very low and most of the time misses the meat of the action, this combo makes me realize that as much as the EOS R is a wonderful camera once you can work within its limitations, it does not do the job to capture fast paced action.

With that, I decided to replace it with either the R6 Mkiii but also want to consider the R5 mkii if it truly provides a leap in AF and fps quality (Mainly with electronic shutter).

My plan would be to shoot manual, 1/3000s, auto ISO. Servo mode with face/eye tracking, recording my key players faces and enjoy the shooting. 12fps sounds a lot better than the EOS-r 5ish if even fps I get right now, all without the AF struggling to figure out what is going on. I understand R6 has 40fps with electronic shutter, and R5 30, but almost double the read out of the R5 which may matter with ball games...

I'm interested to hear from sports photographers here what their opinions are on this? Based on their current experience. 30 or 40fps sounds great in theory, but culling all those shots sounds painful. If 12fps is good enough, then R6 makes sense. If something about the R5 is really unique regarding sports photography, I'm ok eating the additional $1000.

Like my EOS R I plan to use this as far as it can carry me in my photographic journey until I find the limitations are too hard to ignore. Will the R5mkii really carry me longer than the R6?

Appreciate your thoughts!

Sony Semiconductor Rumored for a 180MP Medium Format Sensor

It seems the last little while all I have been talking about is megapixels. Over the last few days, rumors have surfaced from both the Fujifilm camp and now the Sony camp about Sony Semiconductor Solutions Group (SSSG) making a new 180MP medium-format sensor. These types of high-resolution sensors are actually quite complicated. You'd think […]

Which lenses to take on

I’m relatively new to photography and currently have a Canon Rebel 17. We’ll be doing lots of hikes so definitely will need my telephoto lens but also in the streets of Lake Como and Venice as well. Would love any suggestions on what 2 of my 3 lenses to take. I currently have the 50mm, 18-55mm, and 55-250mm - stuck between the 50 and 18-55. Thanks in advance!

Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 Sports + Canon R7 = Complete Failure (works fine on R6/RP)

Hey folks,

I'm going slightly crazy here and need to know if anyone else has run into this specific issue.

The Problem:My Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports (EF mount) is completely dead on my Canon R7. I get "Err 01" and literally nothing works - no AF, no aperture control, no IS, no manual focus assist, can't even take a photo. It's like the camera doesn't recognize the lens at all.

Here's where it gets weird:I did systematic testing with all my gear to isolate the problem:

Bodies I tested:
  • Canon R6 (latest firmware)
  • Canon R7 (latest firmware 1.7.1)
  • Canon RP (IR converted, latest firmware)

Adapters:
  • Canon EF-RF with control ring (genuine)
  • Meike EF-RF with control ring
  • Meike EF-RF with drop-in filter

All my Sigma lenses (EF mount, latest firmware via USB Dock):
  • 24mm f/1.4 Art
  • 50mm f/1.4 Art
  • 12-24mm f/4 Art
  • 24-105mm f/4 Art
  • 150-600mm Contemporary
  • 120-300mm f/2.8 Sport ← the problem child

Test Results:
✅ R6: ALL lenses work perfectly with ALL adapters
✅ RP: ALL lenses work perfectly with ALL adapters
❌ R7: ALL lenses work with ALL adapters... EXCEPT the 120-300 Sport

The issue occurs regardless of which adapter I use on the R7 (tried all three).

What I've already done:
  • Updated everything to latest firmware (R7, lens via Sigma USB Dock)
  • Cleaned all contacts multiple times
  • Contacted Canon → "No support for third-party lenses"
  • Contacted Sigma → "No known issues with this combination" (seriously?!)

So here I am:
  • The lens works perfectly on R6 and RP
  • Every other Sigma lens (including my 150-600 Contemporary) works fine on the R7
  • Only this specific combination (R7 + 120-300 Sport) fails completely

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there some voodoo firmware version that works? Am I the only person on the planet with this combo?

I'm genuinely baffled because logically, if it was a general R7/Sigma issue, my other Sigma lenses wouldn't work. If it was the 120-300 being broken, it wouldn't work on the R6.

Any insights would be super appreciated before I resign myself to using the R6 for this lens (which kinda defeats the purpose of having the R7's crop sensor for wildlife).

Cheers!

R3 PCB Assembly Repair - Electronic Malfunction

One of my R3 bodies hasn't been keeping time. For a while now I've had to reset to the correct time once a month. Sometimes it was slow, sometimes it was fast. I purchased the camera brand new from B&H Photo in May 2024. I can't say for sure if it was malfunctioning before May 2025. Which is when the warranty expired.

I sent the camera to Canon via CPS(Canon Professional Services) for evaluation and was informed that the PCB Assembly needs to be replaced. The PCB is the main logic board, the brains of the camera. Even with my CPS Platinum discount, my total was $920.

I've been using Canon since January 2004(14 bodies in total) and have never had an electronic malfunction of this magnitude. I can't recall having any electronic malfunctions. Bodies I've used extensively: 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 7DMII, 1DX, 1DX MII, and of course the R3. On one hand I was shocked the PCB went out so quickly. On the other hand, I'm amazed at the workmanship of these cameras to function as they do without much failure. Only 1 major failure in 22 years! I've never purchased an extended warranty. If I had, for all the cameras I've purchased over the years, I would have spent well over $920.

Has anyone else had a major electronic repair on their cameras?

AI discussion: The end of photography as we know it

I don't know where to post this, but considering everything that's happening with AI, I think it's pretty obvious there will be huge market issues in the next few years.

AI is replacing more and more standard photographers.
Stock image industry is practically dead.
Business headshots are now generated in ChatGPT.
Product photography is being obliterated by AI.
Fashion catalog photography is dying, being more and more replaced by AI.

These are massive chunks of photography market that are either already seriously feeling the AI squeeze or are about to collapse entirely.

What's going to happen to the camera market when the user base drops by 30%? Or 50%? Or maybe 70%?

Who is going to buy gear? And what's that gear going to look like? Why would you buy a 50mm f1.2 lens, when you can just take a selfie with a phone and get endless amount of "beautiful" AI generated professionally looking headshots. Why would you get a set of studio flashlights, with softboxes and modifiers and then spend a day shooting a wine bottle, when you can just drop a few smartphone photos into some online AI service and get hundreds of different sets of pro-level product shots?

I know some will say "yes, but the wedding / event / photojournalism photography is safe".

But is it?

If you're a wedding photographer, guess what all of these other photographers who just lost their jobs to AI might start doing? Many will say "ok, I'm going to do wedding photography too! I already have the gear, so why not!" And then it'll be race to the bottom... Because it won't really matter that you have any skill or any expensive gear to shoot a wedding. It will all end up being processed by AI in any style the clients want.

Finally, the kids nowdays are being brainwashed with AI slop. Where are the new enthusiasts going to come from in 10 years? You know, who's going to be that kid that bought an SLR and 1 lens in highschool, loved it and then ended up getting a second lens and then a new body and new lenses and then upgraded to a semi-professional model and then 15 years later is doing photography for a living?

Are we witnessing the end of photography as we know it? The more I look at what's happening and how fast it's happening, the more I'm convinced it's all already over.
