Opinion: Why the Great Lens Pivot at CP+ 2026 is exactly what the industry needed

CP+ 2026 concluded with me feeling a bit different about the sense of what is happening in the photography world. Part of me felt we have perhaps reached a turning point at which the market has reached maturity, and the manufacturers are looking to generate excitement in different and perhaps interesting ways. CP+ 2026 was […]

Are Three New PowerShots Coming in 2026?

There has been a lot of talk recently about upcoming PowerShot cameras. Some of that started when Canon executives addressed compact cameras coming in the future, and we'd assume near future if they're talking about it at all. The “new technology” Canon has spoken about could be anything and as the definition of “new” can […]

Buy a new body in Taiwan and bring back to the US

I’m in Taiwan for three days. And the R6 mkiii is sold at $2160~ after tax removed.

It seems like I wouldn’t have to pay taxes dues on the way home (not sure how true that is after the tariff confusion).

Living in California that would mean a whopping $930~ difference/savings.

All my canon cameras have been extremely reliable and if I base on experience I wouldn’t expect something different here w the R6 mkiii.

What could go wrong? Almost a grand in savings isn’t nothing… is that a no brainer? Anyone done that been there who regretted it after the fact?

Thank you

Will it Finally Happen? A New Macro Lens Longer Than 100mm With Variable Magnification

I'll say from the top that this information comes from an anonymous source, but I'm told that a new macro lens longer than 100mm is planned. The source claims that it would would have multiple magnification ratios. Canon has made macro lenses that are longer than 100mm. The last one being the EF 180mm f/3.5L […]

Trying to match Canon video to iPhone video

I recently did some video of my wife and daughter doing a 5k race. The race start was 5:00am, still dark but with the start of the race lit up. I used the Canon R6 I with the RF 24-105 f4-7.1 lens ( with the iso around 1600) and the iPhone 17 pro max. The clarity of the Canon was superb and definitely batter than the iPhone. However, the iPhone video was definitely better lit up and the Canon was more washed out around the race signs with the lighting. Are there specific settings for the Canon that would better match the iPhone video?

RF 7-14mm Fisheye vs EF 8-15mm, First impressions.

I received my 7-14 on Friday last week, and had a chance to do some shooting on Sat. I've had an 8-15mm since they were introduced and really enjoy the fisheye perspective. It's certainly not an every shoot, every photo lens, but it sure is fun to shoot.

First thing you notice is the weight. It's very light. It's significantly longer than the 8-15, and slightly longer than the 8-15 with and EF to RF adapter, so you almost expect it to be heavier. It's so light that my first thought was to check the lens mount to see if it was plastic. It's metal. It does feel very sturdy, but very plastic.

In FF is is noticeably wider. Obviously 14 is wider than 15, but it's hard to know what to expect. The 8-15 was still full frame at 14, maybe 13.5. Likewise this lens is FF down to 12, or 12.5. Being able to shoot wider is certainly beneficial, but being used to the 15mm perspective, I kind of miss it. You can shoot some subjects with a fisheye and not even tell, of course you can always crop.

The circular image at 7mm is noticeably wider than the 8mm of the EF lens. You are more likely to get you feet in the photo if not careful. I do own the 6mm Venus Optics lens, that lens is even more extreme. You can't use the grip with that lens, you fingers will be in frame. But the biggest benefit is the circle at 7mm is slightly smaller. On the 8mm, you can loose a little of the age of the circle at the top and bottom of the frame. Not the actual image, butt he blue halo around the image.

Being 2.8-3.5 is very beneficial to me as I shoot sports. f2.8 is sort of the gold standard.

Is is sharp? Sharper? Hard to say so far. I think so, but all need to do some more shooting before I can say.

Here is my first good image:

Fast Full Frame Unique Zoom Lenses

The Japan Patent Office (2026-033938) has recently published a Canon patent application that shows off some very interesting optical designs. I had previously discussed these as quarter-wave optical designs, just because I have no idea what else to call them. How these lenses work is that there are transmissive surfaces that bounce the light back […]

Will we ever see another 28mm?

Which one of these three (or similar) do you think has a chance to see the light of day? I mainly want a faster autofocus than the current options.

- Sigma Contemporary 18mm F1.4 DC

- Yongnuo R 28mm F1.8 DSM

- Canon RF 28mm F1.4 L VCM

Yongnuo is the one that has a bit more chances to exist, in my opinion. I would buy it, but my day 1 pick would be the Sigma. Canon is probably satisfied with the pancake.
28mm is sadly not trendy nowadays, mainly because it is already covered by smartphone, so the wait could be long...

Canon Claims 23rd Straight Year of Number 1 Share of Global Interchangeable-Lens Digital Camera Market

It's a new year and for the 23rd straight year, Canon is claiming the #1 sales spot in Global Interchangeable-Lens Digital Camera Market for 2025. This is quite the accomplishment, even if quantifying the claim is murky at best. This includes both mirrorless and DSLR cameras. Canon is still selling a lot of DLSRs, having […]

Sigma Adds the 15mm F1.4 DC | Contemporary to the RF Catalog

The Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary is a new large-aperture wide-angle prime lens, specifically designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras. This replaces the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN. Which, to be honest, I never liked the 16mm F1.4 DC DN, so I'm very curious about how this Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary stacks up to the lineup.
