Do you need a really high ISO?

Since the rumors of the 100 - 12 800 (native) ISO in 7D m2 I wonder why they don't pay enough attention?

I begin asking myself: Am I the only one that looks for an affordable body for low-light shooting?
I know Lenses should be faster. But lense is not everything. I say 3/4 the glass needs another quarter push from the body.

So if you remember: the fireflies perhaps about exactly a year ago there was this small discussion. And now have the things changed?
Aside from my unchanged disappointment I ask you about it.

That way I might be able to reset my expectations...

Yonguo YN560-TX Transmitter Released

I didn't see any other threads discussing the transmitter, other than one on the 560 III. Looks like Yongnuo released the new transmitter back in June. Looks promising, remote power and zoom control of the 560 III, plus dummy triggers for 602 and 603/II receivers.

There's a couple of reviews online. Anybody get one of these yet?

What worked for me in Namibia....

I have just come back from two weeks in Namibia. I traveled from South Africa, via Botswana to the central part of Namibia including the Namib Naukluft. I have written a blog of my experiences and the equipment I used on the first part of my journey up to Sesriem which can be seen here: http://thelazytravelphotographer.blogspot.com/

DXOMark Reviews Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4

HTML:
<p>DXOMark has completed their review of the Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 Apo Planar T* for both Canon and Nikon. As you would expect, this lens is an absolute gem when it comes to image quality. It easily outperforms all the 85mm lenses from both Canon & Nikon in optical tests. How that all translates in the field is up to the photographer.</p>
<div id="attachment_17207" style="width: 585px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/dxocanon85compare.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-17207" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/dxocanon85compare-575x494.jpg" alt="Click for larger" width="575" height="494" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Click for larger</p></div>
<p><strong>DXOMark says:</strong>

<em>“The new Otus 85mm is without question the most desirable and best performing 85mm portrait lens available but at $4,490 it’s not for those without deep pockets. It’s also rather large and bulky (although it’s remarkably well balanced on the D800 models), and it lacks the convenience of autofocus. While that may not be an issue for most enthusiasts or professionals (particularly as AF is at best difficult with f1.4 models) it’s likely to further limit its appeal, even if the real reason is obvious.”</em></p>

Samyang Announces 12 mm F2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye for Full Frame

HTML:
<p style="color: #000000;">Samyang Europe announces the upcoming Autumn release of the full-frame Samyang 12mm 1:2.8 ED AS NCS Fish-eye lens. The new model is yet another product of the Korean manufacturer and its widest 35mm film format lens. The lens will be officially introduced during Photokina fairs in Cologne on September 16th 2014.</p>
<p style="color: #000000;">Samyang 12mm 1:2.8 ED AS NCS Fish-eye is a bright, super wide-angle fish-eye lens designed especially for full-frame cameras. It offers the image area in 24 x 36mm format and the diagonal angle of view of 180 degrees. In terms of the optics, it is one of the most advanced “fish-eye” lenses. The product’s sophisticated optics consists of 12 lens elements arranged in 8 groups. This includes three elements made of low dispersion ED glass and two aspherical lens elements to ensure perfect image depth and minimized chromatic aberration. Samyang 12mm 1:2.8 ED AS NCS Fish-eye is the third lens of the brand (along with 10mm f/2.8 and 12mm f/2.0) with highly effective nanocrystal anti-reflection NCS coating applied together with standard UMC coatings. Owing to this solution and the fast aperture ratio (f/2.8) the lens can be used as a perfect tool in diverse lighting conditions, as it provides great focus, high contrast and natural colour reproduction even with the fully opened aperture. The premiere of Samyang 12mm 1:2.8 ED AS NCS Fish-eye is like a dream coming true for professional photographers and filmmakers who seem to have an increasing demand for this type of lenses since the release of 8mm and 7.5mm models, which are considered to be the best “fish-eye” lenses on the market.</p>
<p style="color: #000000;">You will have an opportunity to take a look at the pre-production copy of the new lens on the Samyang stand (hall 2.1, A-025) during the upcoming Photokina 2014 fairs in Cologne. The visitors will be also able to test two other recently introduced lenses: Samyang 50mm 1:4 AS UMC and Samyang V-DSLR 50mm T1.5 AS UMC.</p>
<p style="color: #000000;">The market release date for the new lens and its retail price will be announced at a later date.</p>

There have been lots of talk of a 100-400 replacement and yet nothing has materialized. When might we see this lens?

I have all but given up hope that it will be replaced. After all, it is Canon's top selling lens and if they made it too good it would hurt 200-400F4 sales :o

The 'Original' S90 and underwater housing WP-DC35

I'm considering getting an underwater housing for my little S90. It's a great little camera (the original pocketable quality powershot!). I'm going on a holiday though and would like to try some underwater photography.

Interestingly, getting a new WP-DC35 for my S90 seems to be the cheapest way for me to do that and have acceptable image quality too (and RAW ability to boot).

Any recommendations regarding setup of the camera, tips and trick are welcome because I don't have much opportunity to experiment.

My S90 has been modified with Richard Franiec's Custom S90 Grip and Lensmate control dial ring. Can I leave these accessories on when I want to use the underwater housing or do I need to strip them off?

Many thanks.

1DX vs D4s

I have to admit I only shoot Canon and this is probably pointless but I wanted so say it anyway. I also have a 1DX and love it. I am a wedding photographer and all of my favorite photographers love Nikon and talk about how awesome their D4s cameras are. I read in reviews that the D4s beats the 1Dx hands down. The 1DX loses to Nikon by 7 points in a sensor test on the DOX website. After reading about them I have a couple of observations.

The 1DX has more MPs
The 1Dx has a higher fps
The 1Dx has a better viewfinder
The 1DX has a better, faster, more accurate AF system

Now the D4s is supposedly better in all areas related to the sensor, especially DR, but here are some quotes from DOX website, "As for the much-vaunted dynamic range the Nikon D4s has an extra 1.5 stops at base over the Canon EOS-1D X but that advantage is eroded at higher ISOs and there’s nothing in it by ISO 1600....The Nikon D4S sensor may have a wider dynamic range and better color discrimination than the Canon EOS-1D X but the gulf between the two sensors is less than you might think, and that’s certainly the case with noise levels....The upshot is the Nikon has better low-light performance overall, but even then it’s really only a slight advantage when using raw, and may not be visible at all with out-of-camera Jpegs...the Nikon D4s is ahead of the Canon EOS 1D X, but in reality the two are closely matched and that applies as much to the technical spec’ as anything else... in the right hands both cameras produce results that would be difficult to tell apart.

So the D4s is a "better" camera because of the sensor, which is, in all reality, so little better that most won't be able to tell the difference, but it doesn't get any credit for better AF, more MP and a higher frame rate? Also it is 2 years older than the D4s.
