Is there something wrong with my 5D Mark III?

I just got my 5D Mark III back from Canon Irvine service. It was in for a misaligned viewfinder that they "reworked". They stated all product functions correctly according to specifications. Ive been curious about the D800 since its release, so I rented the new D810 to compare. I set up the two cameras almost identical - except for the lenses. The nikon had an 85mm f/1.4, while the Canon had the 50mm f/1.4. I set them both to manual, f/1.4, 1/60 sec, ISO800, AWB, and used the leftmost focus point in one shot mode over the right eye (AF-S for Nikon). I reduced the Nikon image size to match that of the canon and cropped at 100%. Are these results typical, or should I send it in for service again? The AWB totally missed, more noise, the image is soft and flat. Is my camera a dud, or does the nikon simply crush it? I always have to compensate for my Canon by manually setting the white balance, using only the center focus point, overexposing by 1/2 stop, and stopping down for sharper images, but in this test I just let the cameras and lenses do their thing.

One other hoped-for feature on the 7D2

In order to keep my shutter speed fast (for my 400mm lens without IS) and an F-stop a little less than wide open for a greater depth of field, I need to set the camera to manual. With those two settings fixed, in order to adjust the exposure, I need to manually adjust the ISO.

With auto-ISO enabled, the Manual camera setting isn't really fully manual. It would be great if the camera allowed exposure compensation for the "not quite manual" setting where shutter and f/stop were fixed but ISO was automatic. [BTW, let me know if this is already a feature and I missed it somehow.]

Night driving time-lapse through Tasmanian landscapes

New Light on Vimeo

Earlier this year I went to Tasmania with my mate Timothy Melville to shoot some time-lapse for Australian automotive brand Holden. They gave us a couple of cars and let us loose into the wilderness. Armed with a trunk full of pelican cases we spent seven nights shooting from dusk until dawn, capturing stars, cars, mountains and lakes. We averaged just four hours of sleep a day and captured nearly 20,000 images.

Equipment:
Canon 5D Mark III
Sigma 35mm f/1.4 ART, Canon 17-40mm f/4L, 24-105mm f/4L
Dynamic Perception Stage One 6' motorised slider
Emotimo TB3 Black motion control head
Elinchrom Ranger RX Speed AS lights
Manfrotto heavy-duty suction mounts

Software:
Adobe Lightroom 5, After Effects, Photoshop and Premiere Pro CC

Lenses in the 20mm range

I'm in the market for a new lens. I'm going to be using it indoors with and without a flash to capture room environments (places I take photos will probably call for portions of the room to be darker than others in some instances). Anyways, I need a lens that is at least 20mm wide (94 degree viewing angle) to capture an entire room from a corner.

I was hoping people who own lenses in the 20mm range could weigh in on the topic considering the specs I'm requiring of the lens and provide me with recommendations.

BTW I'm new here :)

Thanks!

Carry on restrictions on South African Airways

SAA's carry on restrictions are 18lbs per bag. I have a LowePro fast pack 350(4lbs) and pelican 1510 (14 lbs)

I plan to bring:
Gripped 6D
Gripped 70D
Gripped 60D
Each right about 2.5 lbs

Canon 100-400 3.0 lbs
Tamron 70-200f2.8 3.2 lbs
Canon 24-70 f4 1.3 lbs
Canon 15-85 1.3 lbs
Rokinon 14mm f2.8 1.2 lbs

430ex .7 lbs
Other various accessories (excluding my tripod and mono pod) but including batteries hard drives, chargers my fiancé's bridge camera totaling about 8 lbs

Laptop ~5 lbs

Anyone have real issues with SAA? I was think of of loading a bit into a third small carryon to reduce individual weights then redistributing once they weigh everything. Worst case I put the laptop, 6d bridge camera, tamron lens, chargers and 24-70 in my lowepro bag and carry that on lock the pelican and check it.

I'd always planned to check my tripod and monopod (tripod and head are worth about $200 monopod about $60) as well as three smaller holster cases to use on the actual trucks during game drives. I'd also get tsa locks for that bag.

Obviously I'd rather carryon my Lowe pro and pelican. Anyone have any advice? Thanks!

Please don't say bring less I've already considered that. I intend on using the 100-400 on the 70d, the 70-200 on the 6d and the 15-85 on the 60d incase we end up with animals extremely close. The 24-70 will be for landscapes on the 6d and the rokinon for astro photography.

Help me to decide: 35 vs 50mm

I've gotten lucky (for a change :-* ) and have some cash to burn! I have enough zoom lenses, and am kind of tempted to buy either the Zeiss Distagon T 2/28mm ZE or the 2/35mm ZE for use on my -1D series camera. The thing is, I am very inexperienced with the use of primes (brought up with zoom lenses) and really want to try and change the way I shoot by going for a '1 prime only' attitude for a while. I enjoy shooting street & field (i.e. taking my camera along and shoot what ever ' I see' ,in B&W mainly, can be a situation which involves people, a shape or light in an empty street...).

Now what I would really like to know from you guys and dolls is: which of the two lenses mentioned would give me to most satisfaction to use? In other words I guess if you had a choice between a 35 or a 50mm (that's what I would get on my APS-H crop camera) which one would you go for? :'(

I don't have this budget to spend every week, so I really would like to make the best decision ;)

PS: thanks very VERY much for all the answers to my 'HUMIDITY ALERT' post!!!

Brenizer Method Photos/Tips

Hi everyone, I've only recently begun shooting with this method, and I'm totally LOVING the results I'm getting!

I'm wondering, however: I shoot using my 135L on a 5DM3. Does anyone here use the 85mm? I've noticed that with the 135, I'm shooting probably more photos than I need to, but that's because I'm scared I'm going to miss an area (those of you who shoot these photos know what I'm referring to).

Should I get an 85L just for this type of shot? I actually don't have one, but I'd love to have one. Maybe this is the catalyst to push me into that camp.

I've also tried it with my 70-200mm 2.8L m2 at approximately 85mm, but I'm more nervous because of the zoom ring.

Thoughts? Also, if you have good Brenizer Method photos, please share!

Selling my two Zeiss lenses. Your advice?

Friends.
I have 3 Zeiss lenses: 15mm. 35mm 1.4 and 135mm f2.
I am thinking of selling the 15 and 35 because:

15mm: IQ of Canon 16-35 f4 is very close to the Zeiss at all f stops. Zeiss has better distortion and f2.8 but the IS on the Canon more than makes up for all this. Besides Canon has auto focus, is lighter, has zoom advantage and is cheaper.

35mm: When I bought it (and actually still) this lens had the best sharpness on 35mm. But now the 35mm f2 IS has very similar qualities and has autofocus, is lighter and cheaper. I bought the Zeiss for one very specific kind of photos - the late dusk photos when the sun has almost gone and stars start to appear and I thought the 1.4 opening would be great. Modern cameras and the 35 f2 will give me very similar IQ.

Will I miss the f1.4 of the Zeiss? I am not sure as practically speaking the OOF back ground of f1.4 vs f2 is not so noticeable and it was very tough to get perfect focus with the Zeiss at f1.4.

Anyone has any advice for me?

Sanjay

Oh, the 135. I think I will keep it for now, it feels so nice in my hands and is great for tripod portraits.

using EOS Remote with 6D, af not working

Hey guys! I'm trying to use the EOS Remote app on my ipod touch but I can't seem to figure out how to focus using the app. There are two buttons, a small circle and a larger circle. The small circle is to focus right? I'm pressing it/holding it down, but no matter what I do, it doesn't autofocus unless I reach over and actually hold my shutter button halfway down. I'm trying all the different af settings in live view and still nothing.

Review: Zeiss 135mm f/2 APO Sonnar T*

Dustin Abbott, a friend of Canon Rumors has completed his review of the Zeiss 135mm f/2 APO Sonnar T* in the ZE mount for Canon. The review is pretty glowing for the Zeiss, as one would expect. Dustin directly compared it to the classic Canon EF 135 f/2L and came away with the conclusion that the Zeiss is optically better, though for twice the price it should be. However, the missing AF in the Zeiss is a big deal when comparing the two.

Says Dustin: “Will it be replacing my 135L? Probably not. Until I shot with the Zeiss I thought the performance of the 135L was fantastic, and I will still enjoying shooting with it. I knew that the Zeiss would be better before I did the review, although I was surprised by just how noticeably better it was in head to head comparison. But for many of the applications that I use the 135L in, I need the AF. But I’m also not a full time professional photographer, and frankly, there are a few higher priorities for that kind of money in my kit at the moment. I’ll keep using my trusty Canon, but I will cherish the images that I took with the Zeiss. And one day, there WILL be a Zeiss lens in my kit. They are just too good.”

Canon MR-14EX I vs II?

Hello, my dear friends. Some of you might read that I was asking some advice on the camera setup for dental clinic. I'd like to ask you if anybody used both Canon MR-14EX (original version) and Canon MR-14EX II macro ring lite flashes? Are there any differences specifically for my use in the clinic with the controlled and ambient light? Unfortunately, reviews on Amazon/B&H are very scarce, and I don't want to part with $500 buying a wrong item. Thank you all in advance!

70D - I think I will keep it but . . .

Likes -

Video with the STM lenses is really good. Autofocus is awesome for video.

User interface and touch screen is nice.

Wi-fi control is well done.

Not as Thrilled -

The still image quality is not as good as my fuji x100s. It's just not as sharp and detailed. Maybe I need to get a fixed lens though for a fair comparison.

Live view shot to shot time is poor. There is a blackout on the screen between shots.

Lack of an EVF. How about a hybrid like the x100s? Would be awesome for video and live view and really give you the best of both worlds.

I think I won't be spending much more money with Canon until they up the APS-C still image quality. I'm already thinking about a fuji ILC. Maybe a used XE-2 with the 56 1.2. I'm not sure I would keep the 70D but for wanting to shoot video of my kids before they grow up. Seems like a decent video cam is $1000 and I'd rather have the 70d and my 18-135 is stm and 55-250 is stm which I only spent $1500 on all together. Plus it will do sports with decent FPS and very fast viewfinder focus for kids soccer. It's well worth 1500 to capture those memories.

I like Canon. But they need stronger crop offerings on the IQ front. I also would like more stm lens - maybe something faster like some primes or a 2.8 zoom. The pancake 40 is too loud for video, whoops. I would even like to see something great on the new 7d sensor-wise to give me more confidence to spend dough on canon glass. Maybe the 60mm macro and new wide angle zoom is stm.

Canon S100 underwater questions

Just ordered an underwater case for my Canon s100, it's a cheap Ebay case and I know, I know, I probably should have ordered some $400 case for a camera that itself is only worth $100. I really just want to experiment with underwater photography and thought that this would be a good way to start. I was thinking about lighting with a cheap underwater flashlight because an underwater flash would be to expensive, have any recommendations for flashlights. Also what filters might I need, I believe the case takes 67mm.
