3 week trip to Finland & Germany, what lenses to take?

Hello CR,

I'm finally taking some paternity leave for our twins (8mo) and going to visit Finland/Germany to see the extended family. Since our bags are already pretty full, I'm thinking hard about what lenses to take. My now only body is a 5D3.

Here is what I have:
24-105L
50/1.4
lens-baby 50
100/2.8 macro (non-L)
70-200/2.8 IS USM II
28-135 IS USM (haven't gotten around to selling)
70-300 (non-L, haven't gotten around to selling)

I think I'm sold on taking the 24-105 and 50/1.4, but I'm really thinking hard about the 70-200/2.8... any thoughts or advice? Also, would you take gear insurance for a trip like this?

Buying a used lens from Adorama

Y'all have been so helpful to me in the past, I'm hoping you can help me decide if I should buy a used lens from Adorama now.

I've decided on purchasing the 24-105 f/4 L for my next lens (and soon after that, the 10-22). I see that Adorama and B&H have it new for $1150, but that Adorama has several listed as N (white box) for $899. It doesn't come with a hood like the full-price version does, but I rarely shoot with a hood and if I wanted to I assume I can buy one separately for less than the $46 they list it for on their site.

However, I've done some reading and found that several people on this forum and others feel like Adorama tends to be optimistic when grading their lenses. I definitely don't want to spend several hundred dollars on a lens and find out a year later that it's failing so I'm not looking at anything less than new... but I'm curious if N is actually known to be truly new.

I know they sell their used lenses with a 90-day warranty, but I'm curious if the white box lenses also carry the Canon one-year warranties as well.

If it's a big risk, I'd rather just pay the additional $250 and get the brand-new, warrantied lens that I know nobody has used. But if it's a no-brainer that N-rated white-box lenses are in fact exactly the same as buying a new lens (just without the hood and bag), maybe I should save the $200 and go for it?

High Megapixel EOS on the Way as Mentioned by Canon

The first confirmation directly from Canon about a high megapixel camera has appeared in an interview with DC Watch. The interview was about the two latest ultra wide zoom lenses, the EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM and the EF 16-35 f/4L IS and what went into designing them.

Google Translated from interview: “I to higher pixel unnecessarily is the opposite, but there is also a feeling if there is a high-performance lens that matches the number of pixels (pixel pitch), to want to take a look at the descriptive power of the true. By super-wide-angle zoom image quality is good came out to the periphery, and we look forward to the advent of high-resolution model of the EOS.”

We were told previously that there would be 3 EOS cameras in 2014, and so far we have seen just one, the Rebel T5. There was also the white Rebel SL1 (i dont count this as a new camera). The next one will be the follow-up to the EOS 7D and the third one is still a mystery. It could be something as simple as a new Rebel, or perhaps something far more interesting.

New lamp, what to buy?

Hi all!

I sold my Elinchrom Quadra because it didn't do HSS, and I'm currently using two 600 RT speedlites.

I'm looking at GoDox and had a look at this link:

http://www.godox.com/EN/Products_Portabe_Flash_EX_Series.html

But seeing that the say 400Ws is the same as guide no. 52?? I'm not sure why I would buy if that is correct, the 600 RT is guide no. 60. I know that you can't really calculate and convert those two, but they have provided both values, but I can't find it to add up. Which one is it? My Quadra was 400Ws and I had at least 1 1/3 stop power advantage over the two speedlites.

What would you recommend for a 400-600Ws portable flash that does HSS and is cheap like the GoDox?

Thanks !

Yard Bird

I recently picked up a refurb 60D and have been terrorizing all of the animals in my front yard with it. Here are few of my guests who join me and my family every night for dinner. What birds do you see in your yards?

Taken with a 70-200 2.8 MkII.

5d Mark III Misaligned Transmissive LCD

I just had my viewfinder fixed and was wondering how many other users had this same issue.
It went undetected for almost two years because I thought it was an af microadjustment/user error issue.

In liveview AFQuick mode the cameras mirror lowers and it focuses through the submirror, mirror, and sensor the same as it does through the viewfinder. Page 212 of the EOS 5D Mark III manual describes this operation. (Specifically page 213 Section 4 Paragraph 2) That means the AF point placement in both liveview and through the viewfinder should be perfectly aligned. Any slight variation in the viewfinder transmissive LCD will result in the focus point being misaligned from the intended target. There should be no slight difference between the AF point placement between the optical axis of the viewfinder and liveview – any variance would cause a shift in the focal plane and be considered a defect. Consumers should be aware their viewfinder focus points don’t precisely focus where they intend.
To test if your transmissive LCD is misaligned - place the camera on a tripod and turn on live view AFQuick mode. Line up your focus points to a target and focus. Now turn off live view and look through the viewfinder. Your AF points should still be squarely over the target. If they are not, your transmissive LCD is misaligned.
I assumed my camera was severely front focusing when placed on a subjects eye. Turns out the camera was actually spot focusing on the subjects eyebrow. Canon claims this is within spec. I disagree.

What would a 16mm or 18mm F2 FF lens look like?

Wider than the Canon 24 F1.4L, there are no lenses in the lineup faster than F2.8. Do others think there would be a market for a 16mm F2L or 18mm F2L prime lens? It would be a stop faster than a 16-35/2.8 which would be awesome for indoors shooting, night sky photography, photojournalism, etc. Would a lens as wide as 16 or 18mm at F2 be able to retain a 72mm or 77mm filter size?

Using viewfinder and square images

Hi there,
Maybe a silly question, but nevertheless.
I like to make square images (1:1). When I use live view I see this format in the screen and on the computer.
When I use the viewfinder instead of live view I see the whole format even when I like to see the image again on the camera and the computer (pre-view). I shoot in jpeg with the mark5dIII.
Is it possible to use the viewfinder and still see the image in square format on the camera?
Thanks for reading my question.

Bryan over at The Digital Picture has posted his review of the Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG II HSM. This is the widest rectilinear lens available for full frame Canon DSLRs. If you’re looking for a lens that will give a truly unique look, this will definitely fit the bill.

Says The Digital Picture:

“This lens is not without some shortcomings, but what it offers is available in no other lens. The Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG II HSM Lens is the widest angle rectilinear lens available in a Canon, Nikon, Sony or Sigma DSLR mount. This unique capability will allow you to capture images that would otherwise not be possible and the quality of Sigma 12-24 II images can be also-impressive.”

Canberra in October

Hello wonderful CR members (can you tell already that I want something!!!).
I’m going to be in Canberra in October and I really want to capture as many bird species as I possibly can, I singled out the Jerrabomberra wetlands as an interesting area, can anyone provide me with additional locations which are all central to the lake, I know there are loads of parks, but I want to single out the absolute best areas so I can utilise the time I have.
Many many thanks in advance!!

Sigma 300-800mm f5.6

White-Breasted Nuthatch by No Small Wave, on Flickr
Canon 1DIV, Sigma 300-800mm f5.6 @5.6, ISO3200, 1/640

As a student working part time, I don't have much cash available to me to buy gear to do what I really want to do, which is take amazing photos of cool birds. As we all know, that gear is expensive. Obscenely, grotesquely expensive. Basically, you really need to be independently wealthy or a retired aerospace engineer or something to even think of taking up this hobby. Since I can't even come close to affording a 600 f4 IS II, I'd been looking at other options including used, non-IS Canon 600's and the Sigma 800mm prime or 300-800mm zoom, all while saving up what money I could.

While looking into the Sigma 800, I realized that there is very very little info out there. No one has really given it a comprehensive review and info and sample pics are scarce. There's one kinda crazy guy who wrote an entire online book about bird photography who wrote a page about it but that's about it. I'd pretty much figured on trying to save up for an old Canon lens and hope it didn't break ever.

So a couple months ago, by complete Craigslist serendipity, I got a stellar deal on a used Sigmonster. I just couldn't pass it up. It sat around for a while until this summer when my schedule finally allowed me a chance to do some bird photography. So here's what I've found out about it so far:

1) It is not a telescope. For some reason, I tried using it like it would somehow allow me to take sharp photos of sparrows 30m away. Not gonna happen. 800mm is not that much longer than the 600mm I was used to (300mm non-IS + 2x TC). Once I wrapped my head around that, things were much better.

2) AF is quick and generally very accurate. It's at least as accurate as my 300 at 2.8 and more accurate than the 300 with the TC. Its obviously not as fast as the bare 300, but it is quicker than the the 300 with 2x TC by a good margin. The AF is silent.

3) The lens is wicked sharp at 800mm. At first, I was disappointed with the sharpness because of point #1 but once I started using it correctly, the results were fantastic.

4) The lens is really contrasty. This is something I've noticed with other Sigma lenses, too. A lot more contrast than the Canon 300.

5) The lens is unbelievably heavy. I thought that wouldn't be a problem since I routinely hand hold my non-IS 300 2.8 and carry that around on a BR style over-the-shoulder strap, but holy crap the Sigma is a millstone. It is tripod only. I've taken some hand held shots, and its fine for a few, but there is no way this goes anywhere without a tripod and gimbal head (which I have, fortunately).

6) IT WILL NOT TAKE A TELECONVERTER. This is one thing I'm actually really bummed out about. I wanted an 800mm lens so that I could get 1120mm out of it. I have a 1D, it should (and does) focus at f8. Of course, a TC will physically fit and manually focus, but Sigma disabled AF with all TC's for this lens (I know because I checked with them). I bought a Kenko 1.4x specifically so that it would AF with my 1dIV, which it should do, and it doesn't. I taped off the contacts to trick it into autofocusing and it works but IQ is iffy. Its going to be a case of using it only when absolutely necessary to get the shot.

Here's a few more shots I've taken with the lens:

If anyone else has, or had, this lens and would like to share their thoughts, that would be great. If anyone has questions about it, I can try to answer them. I know at least one person here messaged me about it a while back.

5D MKIII RAW Video (web series pilot episode)

I know it doesn't look impressive, but it is, if you think that the young boy close-up is 150% zoomed in (to help the VFX) and heavily color graded!

BTW, this is a pilote episode of a web series that is also an online short film competition with very interesting prizes, I suggest you to take a look at the description of the video!

What has been your experience: Best online place to sell lenses?

Gang,

I've had a 24-70 F2.8L I sitting unused since I opted for the 24-70 F/4L IS (which is a joy to use, by the way). I made up my mind to sell it some time ago.

So I went through one online quoting process with a few folks -- KEH, B&H, Adorama, etc. -- and kept seeing quotes of X and the same lens being sold at the same sites for 1.5X.

I lack the eBay time to rack up happy customers, and I'm told that eBay is a customer-tilted justice system in which I may be found guilty without a proper trial.

So I am asking: what is the easiest way to sell lenses that minimizes drama, maximizes simplicity, and doesn't involve me giving it away for nothing.

Easy question, right?

Annnnnnnd: Go!

Pocketwizard Firmware Beta available for 1DX, 6D and 70D

I was happy to see that Pocketwizard has finally released a firmware update (Beta) to make the Pocketwizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 for Canon fully compatible with my 1DX (as well as the 6D and 70D). (see www.pocketwizard.com left side of the page). I'm planning to download the firmware updates and give them a try later this week.

In the meantime, I am wondering if anyone has already downloaded and tested the firmware update with the 1DX?
If so:
1. Do you get full compatibility with the AC3 controller as well?
2. What's the fastest Hypersync shutter speed you have been able to obtain?
3. Any problems identified?

I look forward to hearing from the community and to trying it out myself.

Where do you buy 5D Mark iii?

Hi Everyone,

I have classic 5D and am looking to buy Mark iii, but the full price of the body is still way over my budget. Where do you buy yours with discount?

I was looking at some offers on ebay and they look good, but they are all not USA market cameras, meaning that if Canon issues recall I won't be able to use it here in the states. Some listings offer extended warranty for parts and labor (it won't cover recalls). Did any of you have experience buying camera with extended warranty? Did you have any problems with the camera?

For example, I am looking at such deal: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III-Digital-SLR-Camera-Body-Mark-3-MK-III-NEW-/301194152432?pt=Digital_Cameras&hash=item46209209f0

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

6D problem with overexposed top of the frame at cca 1/1000s and faster

Hi,

I was out this Saturday and took some photos. Now I'm looking at them and some have overexposed stripe on the top of the frame. Examples are attached, unprocessed, except resize (raw has it as well).

I was using 6D and 135mm f2 L (no filter, hood on). the only settings pattern I noticed is that its on images taken at 1/1000s or faster (tiny bit is visible at 1/800s, but it doesn't get bigger at e.g. 1/3200s).

I quickly swapped it for 50mm f1.8, did one shot at 1/640s, it was OK, than one at 1/1600s, the overexposed stripe is there...

Any idea what was wrong, what did I wrong?

Thank you!

Stig
