Canon EF 16-35 F/4L IS - Mackguyver's Review

Given the interest in this lens and the limitations on my time, I'll go ahead and start posting the various pieces of my review here, starting with the infamous brick wall tests. Since everyone seems most interested in the performance at f/11 and f/16, I'll get started with that. I shot the other apertures and some real-world stuff, and will post those in the coming days.

Photos in this gallery compare the 16-35 f/4 IS to:

1. TS-E 17/f4 at 16/17mm
2. TS-E 24 f/4 II, 24 f/1.4 II, and 24-70 f/2.8 II at 24mm
3. 24-70 f/2.8 II at 24mm at 35mm

(starting with photo labelled "2014-07-04 14...")

Notes:
1. All photos are JPEG (max quality) screen captures of side-by-side comparisons in PS CC 2014 of TIFF files processed in DxO 9.5 using the "No Corrections" setting
2. The files and are labeled (typo and all :)) with the lens model, focal length & aperture as shown in the subwindow in PS
3. Photos are shown in the following order - (1) full frame, (2) center @100%, (3) top-left corner @100%, and (4) bottom-right corner @100%. The top-left is darker, bottom-right is brighter showing more CA.
4. Click on the "O" or "Original" size at the top of the screen to see / save & download the photos at full size.
5. Camera settings - 5DIII, Av, ISO 100, tripod, cable release

Bonus: the gallery also contains an informal (read: personal) comparison of the EF 14 f/2.8 II, 24 f/1.4 II, & Sigma 12-24 f/4.5-5.6 II I did a few years ago.

Feel free to ask questions (and complain about my technique, etc :P) about these boring photos and stay tuned for more.

I'm looking at rentig/buying a new lens for weddings

So far, we have gotten by nicely with the lenses we have now but we are shooting a wedding at the end of the month that is going to be inside in a semi-dim room. To give you an idea, this is the location.

I was initially looking at the Canon 24 1.4 but thought that it would be too wide at a distance. I normally use my 24-105 with by 580EX II and it's worked OK in churches- I love that lens in a studio and outside but am not sure if it's right for churches and halls.

Any suggestions for Canon lenses for me to look into? My current lenses are in my profile. I'm leaning towards the Canon 50 1.4 L or the 100mm Macro IS L 2.8 as I can use that for close ups and portraits as well but how well would that work in dim lit rooms?

EOS 7D Mark II Announcement September 5, 2014?

In our previous mention of a released date for the EOS 7D replacement, we speculated it would be some time during the week of September 8, 2014. However a couple of people have said the embargo will actually end at midnight on Friday, September 5, 2014 EST. Photokina begins about 10 days later in Cologne, Germany.

This sounds reasonable, as it allows the week of booth setup in Germany without trying to hide marketing material like signs and banners.

Looking for feedback/comments/experiences with Gitzo systematic GT2542LS tripod

I'm thinking about getting a new tripod. I've been looking at the Gitzo systematic series 2 GT2542LS, but I'm having a hard time finding any reviews or comments about it. There are a few at B&H and at Wex photographic and also a short youtube clip by naturescape. But I'm looking for something more to sway me in either direction. So if anyone own one and are willing to write a few lines about it I would really appreciate it.

I've also looked at the "new" ocean series from Gitzo and it's the same story, no reviews seem to be available other than for the traveler version which I'm not that interested in. So if somebody has experience with any of the ocean systematic tripods and is willing to write a bit about the experience that would be awesome. Right now I'm having a hard time justifying the price difference between the ocean series and the normal systematic.

Thanks in advance,
Mikael

Anyone own both Canon and Nikon

In particular I am considering the new D810 with 14-24 and 24-70 for landscapes.

The Canon 16-35 F4 is good but the 14-24 is great!

The 5DM3 is a nice camera but lacks the DR of the D810.

Hate to spend the extra $ for another body and duplicate lenses.

Does anyone shoot both Canon and Nikon - Canon for long lens and Nikon for wide angles? Experience? Thoughts?

I am not trolling nor trying to start a flame war, but look for well thought out positions based upon experience.

Thanks

Rich

60d results - the bird feeder

Thanks again for everyone's guidance regarding my recent purchase of a 60D. I've had the camera now for almost a month, but haven't had a lot of time to work with it. I realize that the 60d is old news, but for $460 it was an easy justification as a upgrade from my T1i.

So this weekend I set up my portable deer blind at a ridiculously close position next to our bird feeder. We are frequented daily by a woodpecker family and various cardinals, warblers, blue jays, and of course - squirrels. I wanted to see the image quality as I've read criticisms about the noise levels on the 18M sensors.

Normally I would shoot manual and am comfortable doing so on my T1i. I'm not fully acclimated to the 60D yet, so I was shooting in AV with the aperture set to F2.8. I was using a 70-200 Mk II and a monopod. I did crop the output and edit in LR.

Overall, I was happy with the pictures. I did have a lot of OOF shots that I will chalk up to my mistake, but I have also noticed that other shots I've taken with other lenses seem soft too. I'll investigate this more in the coming weeks. I hope I don't have to have my lenses/camera calibrated, but if I do then I do.

So, what did I learn from this morning's events? I learned that chickadee's are lightning fast - holy cow I had a hard time keeping up with them. They act as if they had 5 red bulls before eating. I also learned that when I go out to do something, that's when mother nature will change her routine - the woodpeckers did not show, no blue jays either. I got to see a sap sucker, 2 chickadees, and some cardinals - one which was missing his crest and half of the feathers on his face. He looked like the bird version of the walking dead and I did not photograph him. All in all, the few pictures I kept I thought were good and I wanted to share them with the community.

Thanks again for those of you who answered my previous 60D questions and encouraged me to jump on the deal. I'm looking forward to furthering my photography techniques with this camera.

-wes

Confused, 24-70 f/2.8 or f/4?

Thought I made a decision. Went to the shop yesterday to buy the 16-35 f/4 and the 24-70 f/2.8.
The 16-35, yes. No doubts.
But, I was told in the shop, that one of the assistants tested the f/2.8 and the f/4, and that there was hardly any difference in IQ. He works in the fashion world for years.
So, I didn't buy the 24-70.
Macro option, I don't care. IQ, I do.
IS, a nice option.
But how about the IQ?
I know I will use a tripod a lot. I am not a type that walks the streets for making photos. I am more the calculating type.
What is wisdom?
IS or not?

Loss of viewfinder flash of red light

I was shooting our local 4th of July arade which went through dusk I realized that the [lame]viewfinder illumination wasn't working in my 5DMk3

The choice to make a black-box focus-target indicator on the focus screen was throwing me big time in the ever-darker street. Worse, I was getting NO flash of red and a sense of which target was activated. The first thing I can't do anything about. The second: I know the 7D people pt up with it. Had never had or handled one, ever.

Has anyone had their "viewfinder illumination" die? Looks like a trip to Irvine.

Boy I hope they put in a different system on the 5D-whatever-is-past-Mk3.

Loggersports!

I think this one might be kind of regional....

Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM

It looks like we need to start a thread for this new lens. Here are a couple from my first outing - this is the Florida Capitol (Historic & New) in Tallahassee:

Not much distortion at 24mm, as others have reported:
Wide_Angle_Lens_Shootout_Florida_Capitoll_Test_Lens-_FocalLength-_Aperture-8440_ID-L.jpg

More distortion (not corrected) at 16mm, still a little vignetting at f/16:
Wide_Angle_Lens_Shootout_Florida_Capitoll_Test_Lens-_FocalLength-_Aperture-8461_ID-L.jpg

Excellent flare resistance - compare to TS-E 17 f/4L below:

Got myself one of them Amazon china accessories...

…and apparently not all out of China is crap.

This is NOT an advert for a specific brand or item.

For some time I had been ok happy with my ezybox for my speedlite, but sometimes I miss being able to use my beauty dish and large boxes. So I just Amazon'ed if I could buy a s-mount bracket and I found this Godox thing.

It is as basic as can be. You just stick the speedlite in, tighten the bracket and then attach the Bowens accessories in the s-mount. Be it box, snoot, dish or what ever… it will fit.
The bracket itself has a lightstand mount and the tilt function seems to be pretty functional. By no means slacky or anything and the build itself is sturdy. Makes for a nice little transportable kit.

So just a heads up…. I'm sure you could probably also find brackets for other brands depending on what you have.

Northlight has been sent an image showing an always covered Canon camera. Apparently this photographer is always in the exact same spot on the side of the pitch. The camera is always covered in the white tarp, while no other camera is. It’s definitely a Canon as you can easily tell it’s a Canon lens.

We have been told numerous times that the replacement to the EOS 7D would be at the World Cup going through professional testing. Maybe that’s what’s under the cover.

Servicing Canon Bodies?

Hi

I am new to the forum and this is my first post.

Have any fellow canon users out there had experience servicing their gear? I am looking to get my 7D serviced due to its age plus I don't have any desires to upgrade just yet. Where did you get this done? and where is the best place? I reallise canon has a list of recommended support locations, but i would rather hear it from those that are using the service!

Many Thanks
JK
