to 600rt + st-e3 or not....

hmmmm. I think I have posted a similar topic in the past, but, now i am looking back and forth at 2 shopping carts and am hesitant to pull the trigger....

I love using off cam light. I currently have 2 430's and 1 600rt - and am using the cactus v5 triggers (which gotta say they work great for really cheap triggers. I would like to add at least one more flash to the mix. If i did add another flash, I am down 1 trigger.

note: I have been pushing myself to understand manual flash operation, to the point that now even if i am using flash on camera i am using manual mode.

so my options are - the cheapest path:

Option 1: buy another set of V5's and one of these - http://scottrobertla.com/2014/04/27/strobie-230/ (that would be about $250

Option 2: I have been considering switching to the phottix stratto II's - that plus one of the cheap flashes above would run me around $500

Option 3: But, b&h does have a pretty sweet deal right now on a set of 2 600's with the st-e3 transmitter for $1190...

So i have the ultra cheap just get the job done method, the close to cheap but not overboard method, then the ok that's double what i was gonna spend method.

I do kind of like the idea of the st-e3, even if i keep shooting in manual mode. thinking all those little adjustments that need to be made, being able to do that on the transmitter would be great. But is that convenience enough to call fort he switch? (ok, this isn't a total switch because the 430's could then be used with the v5's).

the last option is the most likely to induce GAS though (lol, if it's that good then i will probably be swapping out the 430's and adding more 600's....lol). hmmmmm

first option is the simplest though....and yeah it's kind of hard to say no to it...and I could add the forth option of going with another set of cactus v5's and make the 4th flash be a 600 (leaving me with 2 600's).. that would cost about as much as option 2....and give me a few more options (I do roll with 2 bodies, so 1 body could be totally off camera, then the other could be 600 on and 600 off, kind of the best of both worlds...)

So, I am just gonna post this, then see what imput I get and make a decision later on today...lol

What is your review?

This was shot with a 2006 Powershot [5MP]

Now I have 600D + 18-135 IS + 50mm 1.8 + Jupiter 200MM F4 with adapter
[ alas no tripod yet. ordered one and yet to receive ]

Sure I have better gear. What should be done to make this image better?

or

even if I soot this same scene with same poswershot what are the scope of improvements?

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV To Feature 4K Video?

[quote author="Canon Watch"]
Just recently a rumor surfaced stating that Canon may announce the EOS 5D Mark IV at the beginning of 2015. Now I have been told (thanks) that the successor of the EOS 5D Mark III could feature 4k video. The feature is going to be implemented, so the source, to further push the 5D into the videographers domain.

Currently Canon is featuring 4k on the EOS-1D C (Adorama | B&H Photo). It would be a more than welcome move if the 5D Mark IV would deliver 4k! Canon added HD recording to the EOS 5D Mark II, let’s hope the EOS 5D Mark IV will make the next step. Just to remind: full HD has a 1920 x 1080 resolution, 4K has a resolution of 4096 x 2160.

Participant grading

It seems as if there is a bit of a gap from being classified as a 1Dx user to a CR Geek. There could be another grade with maybe something like a C500 for over 5000 posts then for the next step say over 10000 posts you could add the CN-E30-300mm T2.95-3.7 LS. When you get to over 20000 posts then it may be appropriate to classify as a CR Geek but one does not want to jump into these sort of decisions lightly. Awarding Geek status to anyone is a serious matter. Think of the harm it could cause.

What happens when ones partner finds out you spend so much time at CR?
What if one has not got a partner and spends so much time on CR that there is no time left to find a partner?
What if whilst on CR, one finds out where to buy a 1000mm lens so they could peek at the neighbour whose window is not that far away and who is very hot?

There are lots of problems associated with being a Geek and hopefully there are a variety of agencies who are equipped with handling the fallout from the problems CR Geek status could cause.

Fantastic as CR is, and I do mean that sincerely, I would hate to think it caused problems for its participants.

Rokinon/Samyang 14mm f2.8 Focus Ring "Hysteresis" - is this normal?

After reading all the rave reviews on this lens, I ordered one myself from B&H.
It is indeed quite a sharp lens even close to the edge at f2.8. My copy is vy sharp on the left
edge and just a little soft on the right edge. At f2.8 on a 5D2, I am happy with it.

However, upon further inspection, I have noticed that there is a funny "hysteresis" on the manual
focus ring. Let me explain: I used live view 10x to establish critical focus on a subject about 15 feet away.
After I turned the focus ring clockwise to achieve critical focus, I noted down the distance scale reading e.g. 10ft.
With the same subject, I turned the focus ring anti-clockwise to achieve critical focus once again. The distance scale reading is now 4ft!
I would have expected the distance scale reading to be the same whether I turned the focus ring clockwise or anticlockwise but I was wrong!

Well, that was my first copy of the Rokinon 14mm! B&H was great to give me an exchange.

After more than 2 weeks, I finally got my replacement and I tested the focus ring once again.
It is much better than the 1st lens but there is still some hysteresis on the focus ring.
e.g. anticlockwise to read 10ft and clockwise to read 7ft.

I have also noticed that the reading would become more consistent if I first turn it all the way to infinity and than
turn it clockwise only to achieve critical focus. However, if I passed the critical focusing point and tried to turn the ring anticlockwise to back track the focus, this hysteresis effect is noticeable again.

So my question is: should I send it back again or live with it? Is it normal for this Rokinon 14mm lens?
Anyone has similar experience to share?

Any help would be appreciated!

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 (1st gen., metal mount)

I'm being gifted a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8, the original model that was introduced in 1987. I'm being told it's in excellent shape, but I'll find out for sure tomorrow. I was very surprised that this is selling for well above even the MSRP of the current 50mm f/1.8 mkII in production. Sold items on eBay are listing for ~$150USD, give or take. Is this just because of the metal mount, or is it optically superior to the mkII? How will it compare to my 50mm f/1.4 (that I truly love, despite it's flaws).

i spoil my speedlite by using DIY speed grid

So I thought I better create DIY speed grid - it will be fun and save money. not to mention cool.

After googling it, what you will be needing are black straw, black cardboard, super glue and Scissors of course.
when down and bought a cheap super glue, - this was a trial for me, so might as well bought the cheap.
I just read the top part of the tutorial, should be easy.

And Wala! I made my DIY speed grid. Output light is so cool than my DIY snoot.

After doing like 30 min of portrait shot. When I woke up on the next morning. Took out my DIY snoot from flash head.

Shoot!!! - Where was my common sense - think out of the box did not work this time, and regret using the cheap super glue, or I should not use super glue after all. Stupid DIY tutorial - (self talking)

My flash light window together with the diffuser swivel is covered with super glue stain. all around. tsk!

- its 430 ex ii. - i was even hopin to sell it.

- hope canon service can fix this.

(Please excuse my broken grammar)

1DX dust behind superimposed screen

Somehow over the course of the weekend I managed to get some dust (two specks to be exact) behind the superimposed screen near the bottom left corner and just to the top-left of the middle when looking through the view finder.

I've taken the focusing screen out and used a rocket blower up there to no avail.

I've had the camera exactly two weeks and two days. What do you guys think I should do: Just ignore it, or send it in?

I took the superimposed screen out of my 5D2 when a similar thing happen to it, but I'm a bit more reluctant to do that with the 1DX.

Show us your Hooters (Owls)

I hope the subject line wasn't too subtle ;). I don't see a thread devoted to owls, so I'll get one started. I think they are really cool and I've been very fortunate to find a few of these guys but have never actually gone looking for them, and yes, most of mine are barred owls:

ex 600 rt, can I lock ettl light ?

Hi all!

I once read, I think it was about 600 RT, that I could shoot an ETTL shot wirelessly and then if it looked good I could lock it, and use that output for the other pictures following that shot. But I just went through the manual and can't find it anywhere. It seems like a cool function when stuff happens to fast to use a meter or dial in the manual output.

I feel vindicated by this post about the 120-300 Sigma

I have to say, I feel more than a little vindicated by this following post about the 120-300 f2.8 OS from Sigma:

http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/06/the-saga-of-the-sigma-120-300-f2-8-os-sport/

I had a copy of the previous (non art) version which is the same lens optically and mechanically. I took it to Ireland to photograph Irish sea birds and I was astonished how lame the AF system was compared to my 70-200 f2.8 LIS II, even with a 1.4x TC. It couldn't track a bird in flight, it would lock and then loose AF. It was hesitant and unreliable. I had high expectations of this lens, but I soon sold it once I returned to the UK in disgust.

The focal drop at MFD was appalling too. At MFD, which one would use to try and diffuse the background of a sitting bird, the focal length dropped alarmingly short. Around 240mm by my estimations, far below the 300mm stated and not much different than my 70-200, which doesn't focus breathe. It's a heavy lens for sure and not really worth the bother for the results I couldn't achieve. Where as the 70-200 f2.8 II L and a 1.4x nailed this shots every time and really showed me how bad the Siggi was behaving. These Siggi lenses really are no match for Canon's finest L's. I currently use a 400mm f2.8 LIS and I look back at this Siggi as a tragic error of judgement on my behalf.

Unexpected Events

Share your photos of completely unexpected photo ops, maybe the IQ is not up to snuff but you can't quite bring yourself to delete it because the subject matter is just that good.
I'll start

This guy initially caught me completely by surprise just by being there. I was not aware Great Blue Herons hung out this far north in Canada. A great find, but not earth shattering enough to pull me out of my zone, however, in the split second he took to spear this huge fish, I had turned into a ball of panic and indecision, tripping all over myself on uneven, muddy terrain, trying to get closer and stabilize myself at the same time.
No evidence whatsoever of the calm ,cool, collected professional photographer I aspire to be. And it cost me.
All I can say is I got the shots, I am able to make no claims as far as IQ goes. But I believe it's still worth sharing the experience.
I have never seen such a slender graceful bird swallow something this huge, pelicans come to mind but somehow I see them in a different category. How he was able to slim down do quickly and fly away so easily afterwards is beyond me.
Cropped close to 100% due to the woefully inadequate focal length, clicking on a photo brings you to "image shack" and a full resolution copy.
All shots are in sequential order

Zeiss Distagon 15mm f2.8

I believe this lens deserves a thread of its own. By far the best UWA lens I have ever used.

This is Aldeyjarfoss on Iceland. One of the most spectacular falls I have seen. Look at the formations in the rock. That tells the story of a dramatic creation of an island.

EOS 7D Replacement & Telephoto Lens in September [CR3]

We’ve been told that NDA/embargo will expire in September for the Canon EOS 7D replacement as well as a new telephoto lens.

Photokina starts on September 16, 2014. So I suspect the embargo date will either be Tuesday, September 9, 2014 or Friday, September 12, 2014. The EOS 5D Mark III was announced on a Friday.

We weren’t given any specs at the time of writing this, or what the new telephoto lens would be. I think everyone is hoping for an EF 100-400 replacement.

Nikon offers worst promotion...ever

Nikon is offering a "switch and save" promotion that has to be one of the worst deals ever. If you buy a D810 ($3,300) and at least $1,700 in lenses or strobes, they'll send you a whopping $200 voucher good for a future purchase.

Seriously? Spend $5,000 to get $200 against another purchase. Okay, it does get a little better – if you spend an extra $7,000 on lenses, etc., ($10,300 total with the D810) they'll send you a $1,000 voucher.

Oh, and by the way, the voucher is only good at the retailer where you bought the D810.

I certainly hope this isn't the start of a new trend among manufacturers and retailers.

DOF and Sensor Size

Sorry guys, I tried to search for this topic on here and I couldn't really get exactly what I needed so I will post the question but if you know the link to another thread that already discussed this thoroughly I would really appreciate that too.

I'm very familiar with the mathematics behind focal length, aperture, DOF, and CoC. However, I keep getting the question on whether sensor size really does affect DOF objectively. I don't think it does, in that I think it is a subjective matter, but I cannot answer them succinctly.

I don't want to take up too much of anyone's time explaining this, but I would really love to hear someone else's technical explanation of this or at least be linked to one, preferably from this site since the knowledge on here is incredible.

Thanks!
