EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 : possible issue?

Hello folks. First post here. Hopefully you guys can solve my issue (or guide me towards a solution).

I've got the above mentioned lens for sale and a couple of days ago someone passed by to test it (and maybe buy it). Eventually she didn't buy it (for now), because she pointed out a rather strange phenomenon. Something that has never really occurred to me in the 3.5 years that I've used this lens.

When you focus on a subject the IS obviously kicks in. Apparently with this lens, the IS can generate quite some noise, but that seems to be quite 'normal'.

The thing that worries her (and myself as well now) more is that the AF seems to hunt a bit (somewhat as described here: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/2975199). We took a bunch of pictures (in good light conditions) and almost always you can clearly see on the distance scale on the lens that it has to hunt a little bit. It looks like it focuses a tad too far and then jumps back, all very quickly. This generates a (small) shock effect.

There is no difference if all focus points are activated or just the center one. We only tested it with her camera (450D). Mine is already sold so I can't test it myself anymore. :(. I believe that the camera was set up in "One Shot" mode (no AI Servo).

We tested other lenses (EF-S 10-22, EF 70-300)as well to rule out a possible camera problem. They didn't have this issue.

Focussing itself goes quickly and never fails. The contact points of the lens are clean.

I was wondering if this kind of behavior is normal? Are there any tests that we can do to check if there's something wrong with the AF (or even IS)? Again, the lens always focuses correctly, but it seems to hunt a bit.

The lens is obviously out of warranty and I don't want to sell someone a pig in a poke. If there's really something wrong with it, I'd rather not sell it.

Thanks!

Nikon D7100 vs 70D and 7D

Hi all, iv only ever owned a Nikon D60 and as it has finally given up the ghost AND i have started to find it limiting i have been wanting to upgrade.

I want to move into owning a canon and so started out looking at the canon 70D however after encoutering the Nikon D7100 im struggling to justify it as it seems to be an all round better camera for the same price. so i looked into the 7D but even this (even at a higher price bracket) seem to come only marginally better than the D7100.

What am i missing? ive been away from photography for quite some time and am rusty to say the least.

Would appreciate any help you can give.

A bit more about the EOS 7D replacement made its way to us over the weekend. This time we’ve received a little bit of information about the viewfinder in the upcoming EOS 7D Mark II.

We’re told the viewfinder will have 100% coverage and a magnification of 1.15. We’re told the top plate has a noticeably bigger bump around the viewfinder than the current EOS 7D.

Everything we’re hearing about the camera is coming from new sources.

More to come…

Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art or 35mm 1.4 Art. Which one would YOU buy? (I can't decide)

I'm trying to decide between the Sigma 35mm 1.4 or the 50mm 1.4 Art...

I was going to ask for some advice on which one but I figured there would be tons of "What do you shoot?" and "What do you own already?" type responses naturally. Either lens will be well used.

So.... which one would YOU buy?

Ye Olde Film Photography

One of my mentors is, as he puts it, a relic of photography's film era.

He is ever willing to impart knowledge but he also enjoys explaining that there's a whole slice of photography that those of us, who started in the digital era, just don't get.

The one I'm aware of is that as film was an expensive medium, that offered limited shots, the photographers took their time composing a shot, thinking through all aspects before pulling the trigger.

So that leaves us digital era photographers with a more reckless reputation with a less than meticulous approach towards composition.

I think it's fair to say that as the entire industry has shifted towards digital, it is on the whole, a better medium.

But what of us digital age photographers? Are we missing some intrinsic components in our photography? Is the lackadaisical attitude offered by modern technology's high burst rate, high storage capabilities hampering what we do?

If you are a "relic from the film era"' what would you say us run-and-gun photographers are missing and should try implementing into our workflow?

As always, this is me trying to improve myself as a photographer and any advice offered will be much appreciated.

Lens repair?

I was browsing Craigs List the other day, and someone is trying to sell a broken 28-70mm f2.8L lens for $150. It looks like the EF-mount has broken off (based on the pictures).. I have no idea what state the glass is in.

The question is... how much will Canon charge to repair something like this? The seller wants $150, but I'm thinking it's worth closer to 0, depending on what Canon tells me when I call them tomorrow.

What do you guys think? What's your experience on repairing older lenses like this?

Quantum CZ-2 cable question

The expensive CZ-2 cables that connect Canon EX 580/600 speedlights to Quantum Turbo batteries seem to last me about 18 months before breaking. Once I foolishly tried cheap $14.00 eBay clone CZ-2 cables which were so sloppy at the battery end they just fell out of the Turbo and were so tight at the flash connection end that I wrecked a 580EX-II trying to pull it out. That was a $225 repair. So much for cheap cables.

But I have read (possibly here at CR) that the Canon cables that ship with the awesome value Godox PB-960 battery is identical to the Quantum CZ-2 cables.

Can anyone verify this?

Thanks.

Small container for holding spigots/studs?

I'm looking for recommendations for small storage containers to hold the spare spigots/studs/screws that I use for light stands. The container should be small so that it takes up little space in my camera bag. I actually want something like this:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-Clear-Can-2-in-x-4-in-Storage-Container-00382/100338091

Unfortunately, Home Depot doesn't actually carry this particular item anymore despite what they say on their website. I personally confirmed with 3 different local stores and the SKUs were all replaced by another brand called Viewtainer. The problem with the Viewtainer containers is that the plastic top has a huge slit cut into it (like on a piggy-bank), and so your contents have a high chance of escaping the container when it's bouncing around in your bag.

Maybe I'm using the wrong search terms on Amazon.com, but I can't really find anything like the Everbilt container there either.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

P.S. Surprisingly, Home Depot carries very few options for screw containers. Almost all of the ones I see in the store are box-typed containers with multiple compartments. All too big and overkill for fitting in a camera bag.

Thinking of replacing a couple of lenses

Hi, I'm new here.

I live in Canada and currently shoot with a rebel T3i/600D (eagerly awaiting the 7D mkII) and have no plans to go FF because I love the reach of crop and don't want to spend obscene amounts on supertelephotos when I get something more appropriate for sports and wildlife/birding. I currently have the Canon 10-22mm and the Canon 28mm/2.8 IS USM for UWA fun and standard prime/low light photography.

After hearing good things about the new 10-18, I've been wondering if I should replace my 10-22 with it and sell it for a profit. However I really enjoy the build quality and the USM of the 10-22 (plus I only got it 8 months ago) so I am reluctant to part with it. So I'm torn as to whether the improvement in optical quality is worth the step down in build quality and loss of USM. I am not a video shooter and don't like the idea of electronic manual focus requiring me to have my camera on to change focus. If anyone has heard anything about a 10-22 II that would definitely solve my problem lol. Btw I'm not interested in the Tokina 11-16 because my gf has it so I don't want to duplicate lenses.

As for my 28mm, I like it but I'm wondering if I should have gotten the 35mm/2 IS USM instead. I got the 28mm initially because it was available on Kijiji for $440 which I though was a great deal. Unfortunately I'm finding that it's phase detection AF is a bit off on my T3i. Now I have limited experience with fast lenses so I don't know if it's a problem with the lens, the camera, or the combination of the 2. Live view focus is fine with the lens though and my T3i seems to have no problem with phase detection autofocus with my other lenses (24-105L, 70-300L, and 100L macro). So the options that I've been thinking of was to send it in to Canon (but I'm reluctant to spend the money since I bought it used); wait until I get the 7D mkII and do further testing; or just sell the 28/2.8 and get the 35/2 IS USM for the larger aperture.

So what are your thoughts as to how I should proceed for my 2 lenses? Thank you in advance for any advice

World Cup started - no sign of 100-400L Mk2

Never had much credence in the views held by some that this mythical lens might appear in Rio - but still early days etc. Miracles could happen.

Ultra secretive Canon treat their loyal expectant customers with contempt.

The least that the Canon hermit kingdom people could say is no replacement planned at all or replacement planned for 2015, 2016....2020 or whatever.

Brown bear cub on the lookout

optimal distance for accurate focusing

I've been doing some testing lately with my 7D and different lenses including my 50mm f/1.4, 100mmf2.8L, 400mmf/5.6L and the 600mmf/4 +1.4 extender. I seem to notice a steep drop in image quality if the focus point is farther away.

the 50 for example is tack sharp when I have a standing model filling the frame in portrait orientation but I found the images softer when I shot further back to have the standing model with room in frame while on landscape orientation.

today I borrowed a 600 + extender and I went out to one of my regular birding areas where I take my 400 normally. I framed a white egret in a similar manner but I found the images from the 600 softer, especially with the extender on. even though the camera beeped to signal focus lock, the whole image was blurry. close-ups were no issue, I got some very sharp images when the bird was 20 yards or closer.

is this normal behavior? is there a guide anywhere that would describe what distances are more optimal for different focal lengths? do I need to simply stop down my aperture for subjects that are further out?

Interesting... World Cup and no snapshots of rumored 7D2?

I know the world is wrapped up in who is going to win the world cup, point and simple, but look, there has to be those present that are camera geeks looking out for new gear.

We have heard that the 7D2 is there taking photos, but where are the spy photos of that gear? At this point in the game I am very surprised that there hasn't been ANYTHING, no REAL specs, no "I caught you" photographs, nothing.

I'm really starting to think that Canon may just drop the XD line and concentrate on more video related cameras. The 70D is a decent replacement, just as the 6D was a decent replacement for the 5D2.

It will be interesting to see what happens in August. Will the 7D2 be announced? My guess? Maybe not...

Why does this happen?

So I was over on LinkedIn in a Canon group discussion and someone posted which was better, the 85 f/1.2L II or the 85 f/1.8? First response was "Get the Sigma" but you know I really expected that one, someone always says something like that. Then it got into zoom lenses, etc.

Finally, someone suggested that the only way to step up your game in photography is to shoot with all primes. He suggested that the OP's goal should be to acquire the 24L, 35L, 50L, 85L, and 135L.

My question is, why do people say such stupid things?

Secondly, why do I do this to myself? At first I wanted to slap the guy, but then I thought, maybe I should just slap myself for even reading the post and worse, responding to it. Yes I admittedly responded to him.

My real issue here is that the OP mainly does portraits. He already has the 70-200 f/2.8L II IS lens so I suggested the 24-70 f/2.8L II is pretty much sharper than any prime in that range. Then the "only primes" post. I didn't think my suggestion of spending $2299ish was out of line considering the total price of the primes he listed.

Why do some people feel as though to do well in photography, you must be a purist? It's like if you don't shoot in M mode, manual focus, and use an L prime, you're not doing it right.

Does the Sigma USB dock work with multiple cameras?

I got my 50Art and it works really well on the 5D3 but not so much for the 60D. Focus is off and it seems consistent. The camera store doesn't have any in stock and may not be able to get me another copy before my exchange/return time is up.

So as another alternative I could buy their USB dock and preset a focus preference on the lens..

And my question is:

Does the software allow me to set the lens differently for different camera bodies? Leave everything as-is for the 5D3 and change it to whatever it needs to be when it's mounted on the 60D?

Thanks!

Wide Angle to go with a 70D

Greets all,

After much deliberation I have decided to upgrade from my 550D to a 70D. Along with a body upgrade I will be investing in some new lenses. I mainly shoot landscapes, travel and street in both still and video. At the moment I am torn between the Tokina AT-X 11-16 PRO DX and the Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM. Im leaning towards the Sigma even though it's not as sharp as the Tokina, then again Sigma has more quality control issues and a higher chance Ill get a poor copy. Im at a loss and seek some advice...

Thanks in Advance!

Mea Culpa! - The World Cup in Brazil

I feel this morning that it is time for confessions....!

Despite the time I use in this forum reading and commenting on the different lenses and bodies, I was not able to pay attention to the bodies and lenses used by the photographers on the sideline during the match between Brasil and Croatia.. ;( The game was too exciting, so I cannot report on prototype lenses or potential 7DII..

Again, I am sorry, and I feel that I have not lived up to the responsibility as a CR member..
