Animals in Black and White

I post from time to time (bird portraits, best animal photos, bif) and like just about everyone else's images, the images that I post are in color. But, sometimes, black and white just seems to make a stronger statement. Here's a photo of Polistes flavus wasp, a native of the Sonoran Desert that has the unique ability to stand and even walk on the surface of water without falling in. I like this image in color but I love it in black and white.

New Nikon D800s... Why?

Just saw this link going around the rumor sites:
http://www.thephoblographer.com/2014/05/21/nikon-800s-reported-replace-d800-d800e-june/

And I had a question. Why does Canon employ a longer lifecycle on the more flagship bodies like the 1D, 5D, 7D, etc. (in fairness, usually with larger functional upgrades when they do rev those designs) when Nikon seems to put out somewhat watered down upgrades on a more regular basis?

I've been reviewing Northlight's nice release timeline (http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/rumours.html#nikon_timeline) and it looks like other than the D300S line, Nikon's been releasing the more premium bodies at a pretty steady 2-3 year clip while Canon guys are on a 3-5 year cycle.

I'm not calling one company's approach better than the other -- I was just curious. Why rev the D800 at this point in time? Is it deemed in desperate need of an upgrade compared to the 5D3 right now? A big AF upgrade would be great for Nikon users, but why not wait until the next super-duper FF sensor rolls out and make a bigger splash then?

Mountains, Lakes and Rivers

Any photos of mountains, lakes and rivers anywhere on the planet? I'll start off with a few. The first one is a mountain overlooking Canmore, Alberta, Canada. It was taken at the end of March. The second one is Cowichan Lake on Vancouver Island, north of Victoria.

Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di Macro

I'm surprised there isn't a thread for it here already so here we go. I traded my (earlier) Sigma 50 f/1.4 for one of these today and for what it cost me I'm impressed. I know it isn't the 100L I want to get later but it will certainly hold me while I spend the difference on a few more pressing things. Anyone else have one?

As an aside sRGB was not kind to the attached image, but this post comes to you from my tablet while I do some work on my desktop.

Any chance of a 6D + 24-70 f/4 bundle?

But a legitimate bundle.

I'd like to get a second 6D body, and i'd also like to get a 24-70 f/4 IS. It'd be really nice if i could get them both at a reduced price in a bundle. With the added advantage that Canon still sometimes does instant rebates on 6D bundles.

I know there were rumors about such a thing a year or two ago, but just like with some other rumors they turned out to be for the 5Dmk3 instead. Bleah.

Traveling to the UK/Ireland

Hello fellow canon users,

I will be traveling to the UK and Ireland for 2 weeks. I decided to bring both my 6D and my goPro (for when it's raining) but I can't decide which lenses to bring. I have a Lowepro Flipside Sport 15L backpack, so I probably have room for 2-3 lenses. I'll be walking around a lot so I don't want it to be too heavy.

Here's what I have:
70-300 IS/USM
100 2.8 macro
50 1.4
24-105L

We will be doing a lot of sightseeing, including a bunch of castles, cliffs of Moher, tower of London, etc.

I was thinking about bringing the 24-105 and the 50, but I wanted to get someone else's opinion since I have never traveled out of the US before. Also, how safe is it to carry around a DSLR. Luckily the camera is stored in the back part of my backpack, but I am just curious. I'm quite paranoid about theft.

EF 50 f/1.2L II Gets a Mention by Canon

<p><strong>UPDATE</strong>

Philip has confirmed via Twitter that this video is a couple of months old and definitely a typo.</p>
<p><strong>Original Post</strong>

It’s probably a typo, but a Philip Bloom video showing off the autofocus performance of the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/889545-REG/Canon_EOS_C100_EF_Cinema.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">EOS C100</a> makes a mention of an EF 50 f/1.2L II. From time to time Canon does a poor editing job of marketing material and we get these kinds of mentions about new gear. While I have no doubt that a version II of the EF 50 f/1.2L is being developed, I’m not sure this is how they intended to let us know.</p>
<p>You can see the<a href="http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/multimedia/philip_bloom_on_af_with_the_eos_c100.do" target="_blank"> entire video over at the CPN web site</a> that shows the mention, along with some good information about the autofocus performance of the EOS C100.</p>

The Next "L" Lens Announcement Will be the... [CR2]

HTML:
<div name="googleone_share_1" style="position:relative;z-index:5;float: right; /*margin: 70px 0 0 0;*/ top:70px; right:120px; width:0;"><g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=16526"></g:plusone></div><div style="float: right; margin:0 0 70px 70px;"><a href="https://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-url="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=16526">Tweet</a></div>
<p>We’re told that the next “L” lens Canon announces will likely be the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS replacement. The odds are still on it being announced around the time of the EOS 7D replacement, which we hear is for Photokina, so I we expect an announcement some time in August of this year.</p>
<p>All we’ve heard about the lens is that it will not be push/pull zoom and will be quite a bit more expensive than the current and aging version.</p>
<p><em>One day this lens will be announced…….</em></p>

a 70-200mm not focussing.

I went to yellowstone this past week and half way through the trip my 70-200mm 2.8 ii would stop focussing on the wide end. Tried it on two bodies same thing. I noticed after inspection the back screws on the lenses are coming out. I screwed them back in and within an day they were coming back out. Also if I focus it while zoomed at 200mm and pull focus back to 70 it will go in and out of focus. I don't remember it ever doing this. Can anyone else check their 70-200mm?
I have a warranty but if it gets fixed instead of replaced I just would like to know what to check and what the potential problems could be?
Thank you for anyone who has any ideas.

New found love - 35mm

I started street photography 2-3 months ago, everyone raves about 35mm - I tried it, and hated it. I suppose when you're new, you haven't developed techniques and you have to get that close to people it makes it a very daunting prospect!

So over these 2-3 months I shot with telephoto lenses, 135mm f2 with and without 1.4 TC, then when I got the great white 200mm f2, I should that with and without 1.4 TC. Almost 400 photos collected in my telephoto album here http://www.flickr.com/photos/62198876@N02/sets/72157643448738663/

When I started using the 200mm f2, people stopped to ask me 'what' it was - Oh.. it IS a lens? really yes.. I built up a fair bit of confidence, and people could see I was clearly not trying to hide.

With my new found confidence, I thought I'd try wide again using my 40mm pancake - removed the grip from my 5dm3 - and it feels a lot more discreet than my gripped 5dm3 200mm f2 ever was :)

After a session with the 40mm, I was starting to see how AF wasn't much good for edge of frame focus on subjects that are very close. I had been avoiding my Carl Zeiss 35mm 1.4 Distagon because it's about the size of a 135mm f2.. but really considering how far I'd come, it was not much of a concern anymore.

I quickly settled on manual settings of 1/1000, f16, Auto-ISO - this mean that I could take photos whilst still move and had as much as possible in focus. This 35mm lens is manual focus only and has a good smooth long throw - with a focal gauge, it's great for prefocussing - even adjusting the distance between me and the subject changes.

Here is the lens

Need to send my Canon 24-105 f/4 L to Canon to be calibrated.

I just joined CPS Gold and I need to send in my Canon 24-105 f/4 L to Canon to be calibrated because I just haven't been able to get a truly sharp image from it. I know that some people say that this lens isn't the sharpest of the L lenses but others have said theirs is tack sharp.

I've decided to send my Canon 6D with it as well. Should I remove my B+W MRC UV Filter and memory card before I ship my equipment to Canon? Thanks in advance! :)

50mm 1.2L not focusing, ring feels stuck??

Hi, on using my fav 50mm 1.2 L the other day I noticed it wasn't focusing in AF, then switched to manual focus and realised the ring was kinda stuck, not completely but there is a lot of resistance there now that wasn't before. And turning it does not affect focus. Seems like focus / lens elements may be wedged /disengaged inside.

I think it may have taken a small drop the other day when some kit spilled out of my case, only about 30cm max but onto a carpeted concrete floor. I've dropped lenses more than this before with no effects so did not think anything of it at the time.

Going to take it in to get looked tomorrow anyway, but just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Cps gave me a 1dx and falling in love

Just an awesome camera. Iso is a stop better. Being able to control iso, shutter and aperture values so it does not drop below them is awesome. The burst af is just amazing, caught more expressions that i feel I would normally miss since its so fast.

Do not like on/off switch, drive and a few buttons are different from 5d3 so just need to get used to it.
Meter is on right in VF and used to bottom.

But it hustles and feels like I have no excuse at this point with this beast. Also the colors seem a little nicer or its in my head.

Tomorrow I am going to use the 5d3 and compare raw files and hopefully I should now. Just so tempting.

IS, Tripod,Live view and my confusion....

...Please educate me.

The 600 mm with 1.4 X is on the tripod. IS is ON.

Looking through the viewfinder, image is shaking and becomes stable when shutter is half pressed engaging the IS.

I switch to live view, magnify the image to the max for precise focusing.
Image is stable- I press the shutter halfway , the IS engages, the image starts shaking !!! I switch the IS off, press the shutter, image remains stable.

Which one is to believe ?? What is the correct technique to get a sharper image?
Where to read about it ??

Thanks

Dholai

<p>I’m not sure how I missed these, but <a href="http://www.canon.com.cn/products/camera/ef/lineup/widezoom/ef1635f4lis/sample.html" target="_blank">Canon China</a> has posted same images from the upcoming Canon EF 16-35 f/4L IS. The images look good, and the corners look better than the EF 17-40 f/4L. Late to the party, but still have questions about the 1Dx

I am starting this thread where I can pose my ignorant questions regarding the 1Dx, and where some of you might take pity on me and help :)

I have a question for experienced 1Dx owner. I am looking in the manual on p. 350 and can´t find the answer I am looking for. I want to program one of the buttons to be able to switch between One Shot and Ai Servo. I have managed to do so, but it only works when holding the designated button down, which in my opinion is impractical. Is there a way to make it stick, so that it stays in the mode I have choosed untill I deliberately switch it back?

Thanks
