College student needs help deciding what camera body to get.

I'm a college student studying photography and I currently shoot with a 5D Mark III and 7D. I'm debating when I get my second set of student loans if I should get a 6D with a 17mm t/s lens and a 14mm 2.8L II or a 1DX? I mostly shoot editorial, architectural, action sports, and night time photography.

I know the 6D has better quality photos at night than the 1DX but I also shoot a lot outside in the cold, sub-zero temps of Minnesota for extended periods of time in the winter, and in some pretty rough shooting situations to land great editorials. Last month I shot a riot and got pushed into a cement barricade by police, ended up getting my 70-200 dented and last summer I broke my 50 1.8 when I went close to a mosh pit at a concert when someone fell into me.

Lens wise I currently shoot a 10-24mm 3.5-4.5, 24-70mm 2.8L, 70-200mm 2.8L IS II, and a 600ex R/T but will have a 16-35mm 2.8L II, 50mm 1.4, 100mm 2.8L IS as well by the time the second set of loans come.

I'm wondering what everyone on here thinks would be the better choice for me? The top of the line 1DX that can handle everything I throw at it or should I get the 6D that's way cheaper and has superior low light technology with the 17mm t/s and the 14mm 2.8 ii lens which will improve my architectural photography and give me more options when shooting?

Thinking about the Sigma 1.4 Art

Well, I'm on the fence on this Sigma 1.4 Art. I have all but a 50 prime in my bag already.

8-15L, 16-35L, 24-70 2.8L Mk 2, 24-105L, 70-200 2.8L Mk 2, 35L, 85L, 100L Macro, 135 2L.

I didn't care for the 50 1.2 and sold my 50 1.4 years ago. For that focal range, I just used my zoom (24-70 MkII). I think I am chasing the sharpest lens dream and really don't need this thing. The images people are posting look pretty good, but the complaints about having to adjust them is troubling. All L glass so far, but recent Sigmas are peeking my interest. I'm debating on skipping a 50 altogether and getting a 100-400 to capture my kid playing softball. For lacrosse my 70-200 was awesome, but my daughter is outfield and cropping the images later still gets a little grainy for my liking. I thing the 400 would help a lot. I had the 2x extender for the 70-200 and didn't like that either. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a test. I sold it on EBay for 20 buck under what I spent on it. Thoughts? try the 1.4 ex or get a 100-400. With my luck I will get the 100-400 and Canon and/or Sigma will make a newer version...LOL Happened with my 35L. I got it and 3 weeks later they released the Sigma 35.

Canon Lens Pouches

After buying many Canon lenses, I can say that the supertelephoto luggage/suitcase/cases are nice, the padded pouches of the 70-200 and 180 are quite nice, but the pouches are all but worthless as anything other than a dust cover and even then they are open enough to let dust into the pouch.

Has anyone ever used the lens pouches or found another use for them?

Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS Ext 1.4x review

Canon Spain lend me this beautiful and expensive lens for 3 weeks and I tested it against my 500mm f/4L IS and the 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6L IS. With and without teleconverters.

I wrote a long test in my blog. It's in spanish, but you can translate it with Google Translate and there are plenty of images and a video.

High Performance Lenses Offer Optical Image Stabilizer and a Refined Compact Design; Lightweight EOS Rebel SL1 SLR Kit in White Available Soon

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 13, 2014 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to announce two new wide-angle lenses and a new white color model of the EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR camera, just in time for summer. The introduction of the new Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM and the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM wide-angle zoom lenses provides Canon digital SLR camera users with the ability to capture stunning photographs and videos of spacious landscapes and many other iconic scenes. The EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens is the first L-series wide-angle zoom lens equipped with image stabilization, providing professional photographers with expanded creative options, especially in low light. The EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM wide-angle lens is an affordable option for entry-level DSLR users looking to enhance their images and videos with unique and creative perspectives.

Since its introduction in March 2013, the EOS Rebel SL1, the world’s smallest and lightest digital SLR camerai, has provided photographers of all levels with a high-performance digital SLR in a small, compact camera body. The new white EOS Rebel SL1 Camera Kit is complemented by a matching white EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens and offers a stylish alternative for photographers who like to stand out from the crowd.

“Having just reached a milestone of producing 100 million EF lenses, Canon is dedicated more than ever before to its heritage of creating outstanding optics for photographers of all levels,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM and EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM ultra-wide zoom lenses, when paired with Canon EOS Digital SLR cameras, are powerful tools that can enhance any photographer’s creativity. And new to the U.S. market, the white EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR camera with its companion white lens, provides users with high-quality images in a small, compact body that is easy to bring along on all their summer adventures.”

EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM

Fully compatible with all EOS Digital SLR cameras including full-frame models like the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS 6D Digital SLR cameras, the compact and lightweight EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM ultra wide-angle zoom lens offers high image quality and an Optical Image Stabilizer (IS) for shake correction up to four shutter speed stepsii, making handheld shooting possible in dimly lit scenes where camera shake can occur. In addition, an intelligent CPU in the lens automatically selects the optimal IS mode by recognizing differences between normal handheld shots and panning. This technological advancement supports a greater range of creative expression for photographers in otherwise difficult shooting situations, such as dark indoor scenes where flash photography is prohibited, or in places where a tripod cannot be used, or when shooting at low ISO speeds.

The EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM ultra wide-angle zoom lens features newly developed, high quality Canon optics that incorporate three GMo (Glass-Molded) aspheric lens elements, including a large-diameter aspheric lens, which help improve image quality by correcting aberrations. Two additional UD lens elements help reduce chromatic aberration from edge to edge throughout the entire zoom range for excellent image quality with high resolution and contrast. The lens also features enhanced fluorine lens coatings on the front and rear lens surfaces to repel dust particles and help ensure superb color balance while minimizing ghosting. The inner focusing and ring USM offer silent, fast and accurate autofocusing. Full-time manual focus adjustment is available in autofocus (AF) mode. A nine-blade circular aperture creates beautiful, soft backgrounds. A new compact four-group zoom system provides a minimum focusing distance of 0.28m/11 inches throughout the zoom range and a maximum magnification of 0.23x at the telephoto end for outstanding performance.

EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM

Created to be a great companion lens for the Canon EOS 70D, EOS Rebel T5i, EOS Rebel SL1 and other EOS Digital SLR cameras with APS-C size image sensors, the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens expands Canon’s line of Stepping Motor (STM) lenses. For entry-level users, this affordable wide-angle lens offers the ability to shoot creative, high-quality images and video in tight indoor locations such as a cozy corner table in a restaurant or unique vacation photos where the subject is close up, yet the surrounding area can still fill the frame.

The EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM ultra wide-angle zoom lens features a compact and lightweight design with an Optical Image Stabilizer for shake correction up to four shutter speed stepsiii, enabling handheld shooting in low light. The lens’ stepping motor and newly designed focus mechanism are ideal for Canon EOS Movie Servo AF (available on EOS 70D, EOS Rebel T5i and EOS Rebel SL1 cameras) to provide smooth, quiet and continuous autofocusing during video shooting, as well as when taking photos.

The EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM ultra-wide zoom lens features one UD lens element to help reduce chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range for excellent image quality with high resolution and contrast. It also features enhanced multi-layer lens coatings to help ensure superb color balance while minimizing ghosting and flare, while a seven-blade circular aperture creates beautiful, soft backgrounds.

Compared to the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM wide-angle lens, the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM ultra wide-angle zoom lens is nearly 20% smaller and 38% lighter. When combined with a compact digital SLR, such as the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 camera, the smaller size makes it very convenient to carry with the camera when traveling. The compact four-group zoom optical system provides a maximum magnification of 0.15x at the telephoto end. The wide-angle zoom range of the new EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM is a perfect complement to the currently available EF-S 18-55mm IS and EF-S 55-250mm IS STM zoom lenses.

New Lens Availability

The Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM and the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM ultra-wide zoom lenses are scheduled to be available in June for estimated retail prices of $1,199.00 and $299.99, respectively. Official-NEW LENSES: Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM and EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 STM

So… it appears the recent threads / rumours / images are true!

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2014/05/13/canon-announces-16-35mm-f4l-and-10-18mm-f4-5-5-6-lenses

Looks like Canon *IS* doing some good work with lenses (do you see what I did there?). AND the price seems very reasonable @ $1199 and $299 respectively! (PS.. I’ve heard and seen very good things about the EF-M 11-22mm STM IS.)

I, for one, am not particularly interested in buying either of these lenses at this stage as I have my UWA covered with my very good Sigma 8-16mm on my Canon 7D. But should I ever move up to FF in the future (I might not, I’m very happy with my Canon APS-C bodies), I might be interested in the 16-35mm f/4 IS (I don’t need f/2.8 for UWA).

For me, corner sharpness is very important on my UWA lenses… and my Sigma fits the bill here very well. IS can be handy for low light situations, and yes eg when taking photos without a tripod.

New product announcements always make me happy / excited. I enjoy seeing technology being applied, new innovations, high quality lenses.

So, what do you all think of these actual / real lens specs? Looking forward to seeing this thread grow! :)
Regards all

Paul

Canon Interested in Hasselblad?

HTML:

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=16483"></g:plusone>

The quick and direct answer? No.

A lot has come in over the weekend in regards to the reports that Ventizz Capital will be selling off its ownership of the Swedish camera maker Hasselblad. It’s no secret that Hasselblad is in financial trouble, as the whole medium format segment seems to be under capitalized and lacking direction.

Does Canon have any interest in purchasing Hasselblad? I don’t think so. Canon did have Hasselblad’s books open a few years ago, but that was probably more of a tire kicking exercise than actual interest in purchasing the company.

If I had to wager on a purchaser for Hasselblad, I would go with Silverfleet Capital, who owns Danish medium format company PhaseOne. The second option could be Sony, although I think they’ll enter the segment on their own.

Ai servo inconsistency with zone af on canon 5d3

I was shooting a 5k for family today. I fired test shots before my group was coming and all were good. When the time came I shot 1/250, f9, iso 400, eval meter, center zone, case 1, burst high. In dpp most of the shots are soft whent they should be sharper.
Camera 5d3
Canon 70-300L
Most were in the 2-300 range.
I am going on a trip in three weeks and am curious if this sounds like a user error or a lens issue?

Advice on a upgrade from the Rebel XS

Let me start by explaining my situation: I'm relatively new to photography (have been using a DSLR for about 2 years) and primarily shoot my kids at their various activities and outdoor/nature scenes (with a preference for individual plants or animals rather than landscapes).

My current equipment consists of a Rebel XS with 18-55 EF-S kit lens, 50mm 1/8, 80-200 2.8 L, and 430 EX II flash. For well over 90% of what I want to do, this is just fine, and has provided some shots that I'll treasure for the rest of my life (most of the shots I miss are due to me, not the gear). But remaining few % is irritating! Most of my problems are in low light (indoor event for the kids where flash isn't allowed or I'm too far away to use it) where I could benefit from better high ISO performance than the Rebel can offer. The other issue is catching the "key moment" when action is occurring, where the Rebel's frame rate isn't up to the task (I shoot RAW since I don't think the JPEGs from the Rebel are particularly good, and that reduces the frame rate to about 1-2Hz).

I'm aware that a 5D III would fix all my problems. But that's expensive, made more so by the need for a replacement for my EF-S lens. So I'd like opinions on the more budget-friendly options, in order:

7D or 70D: these are fast enough, but do they do well enough in low light? I'll define "well enough" as having at least the same image quality at ISO 3200 as the Rebel does at 800.

6D: fixes the low-light issues, but is the frame rate fast enough to have a decent shot at capturing action?

I'd appreciate any advice on this. Should I go for one of the above options, or just bide my time and save up for the 5D III?

Portraits from the Mara

Portraits from the Mara is a series of shot I did in the Masai Mara, Kenya in mid April.

First of all I would like to thank the forum for the inspiration and the technical insights purposed. I've really learned a lot here.

When I started to design the shots I thought about the equipment needed. I own a single 6D and a 24-105, which for sure wouldn't have been enough to realize the shot I wanted. So I first rented the Canon 100-400L IS, which after a lot of reading, seemed the best suited lens for my goals. But after a few analysis, it was clear that it wasn't enough either. So a friend of mine lent me his APS-C 650D.

And it worked just fine! I did the whole safari with two camera bodies 6D+24-105L for close ups and 650D+100-400L for distance. The effective focal lenght of 640mm was just fine for me. Peraphs the only miss was the ISO capability of the 6D, but not having to change lens and two camera bodies at once was great!

Here I present the shots I'm most proud of. I am sorry for the big sign on the attached photos but it was requested for a contest :(
The images of the lions are to me quite common, so I tried to portray some particular angles or scenes which looked more difficult to achieve to me and more rare. The one I'm most proud of is the one of the cheetah walking toward me.

The description for each image is on 500px, I didn't want to just paste it here. So if anybody has questions about the shots, I will answer them here.

5D iii with 135 mm 85 mm 50 mm wedding in servo poor focus any ideas?

Hi there.
I was shooting a wedding yesterday. 5d iii worked great with one major exception. When shooting couples dancing (iso around 5000 1/200 s ). it was not able to deliver a sharp image (maybe one sharp in 10 shots) lenses used 50 f/1.4 , 85 f/1.8, 135 f/2L and 16-35 f/2.8 L II. Servo mode tried differnet cases different settings (points, first image priority etc). It was not a motion blur. Does anyone have an experience working with these lenses in servo? I mean I tried everything with no result. Are these lenses simply too slow for tracking? Was it too dark? Thanks.

This is only my second post here,so here it goes!
A friend of mine asked me to come put to one of his rally car races in colorado and shoot him and the other racers next month. As this is my first time shooting something like this(I normally shoot wildlife and landscapes) I need some help from everyone on CR. First. Do I typically need a press pass for something like this?
And second what gear recommendations do you have for me? I'll be shooting with a 7d and 50d a 70-200 on the 7d and the Sigma 50mm on the 50d. Any suggestions are most welcome!
Thanks everyone!
