Stolen equipement - off-brand

Hello!

If you, or your friend, by any chance, found/seen an offer for used Nikkor 500mm F4G ED AF-S VR,
especially from Spain, please be advised that it might be stolen.

On may 5th at about 8 pm, by the volcano Teide in Tenerife (Spain), on the parking near Roques de Garcia
the lens: Nikkor 500mm F4G ED AF-S VR (serial number 202057) was stolen form my friends car.

It had big sticker on the hood with word 'HESJA', and visible scratch near the distance scale.

If you came by this lens, please inform the police, and please let me the know.
Thanks in advance!

Best Regards!
Leszek

Used 5D with sensor replaced- good deal?

Hi all
I was looking for a used 5D (classic, mark i, original, etc.) and I have found one with the sensor allegedly replaced by the 1st owner, along with the mirror fix, also alleged. The camera is now being sold by the 2nd owner, who seems quite honest and candid about everything but doesn't have any documentation from Canon (it seems he tried to get it).
Now, should I be concerned about a replaced sensor? The price is not bad, considering he is adding a 50 II (which I will have to sell, though) and an RRS L-plate, all for $ 525.
Thanks for your advice in advance...

Canon EF-S 17-85mm vs Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L - Please help me!

Hey Guys!
One Question... I want to Upgrade my lens and actually have the EF-S 17-85mm. Would the 24-70mm f/2.8 Mark 1 be good? Is it worth the money?

I testet both lenses in image quality, build quality and others, but I think that the EF-S is a little bit sharper. Sure, the 24-70 have the lower aperture and so I can shoot better in low light, but the EF-S has image stabilisation... I dont know.

I want to use this lens for Video and Photo, but don't know if this is the best choise for me.

Please help me and give me an advice!

More Wide Angle Lens Speculation [CR1]

<p>We’re told that there are two wide angle zoom lenses coming from Canon. One we’re told would be an 11-24 f/4, though it wasn’t mentioned whether or not this would be a full frame or APS-C only lens. Though the source did say the lens would be expensive, which leads me to believe it would be full frame compatible. The same source also says a new 16-35 f/4 wide angle with IS is also on tap and would be quite pricey. However, if they perform in the corners, people will pay nearly anything for a great wide angle Canon offering. I do find it a  bit odd that neither of the mentioned lenses are f/2.8, but perhaps that’s coming down the road.</p>
<p>There was another mention of a new Canon 100-400 being priced in the $3000 range also coming.</p>
<p>This info is not coming from known sources, so treat it accordingly. More to come…</p>

Let's confess our disgusting perversions

I'll start confessing mines.

In spite of the huge efforts made by the Research And Development Departments of most companies belonging to the Photographic Industry, aiming to offer us better products,

1) First of all, I don't dislike lens flare. I must be a true fetishist in this field, because I like the "flare effect" seen in digital cartoon movies (e.g. Pixar's "Up").
2) I don't dislike vignetting. I could be defined a moderate pervert with respect to vignetting, because I don't add it deliberately to pictures.
3) I don't dislike a reasonable amount of noise in pictures. Again, I don't add it where there's no OOC noise and I don't underexpose my pictures in order to get the maximum possible noise, so I guess my therapy shouldn't be so extreme.

And what about you, my fellow friends from CanonRumors? Are you shameless enough to confess that sometimes you like something that's not technically perfect?

New EF-S Ultrawide Coming? [CR1]

HTML:
<div name="googleone_share_1" style="position:relative;z-index:5;float: right; /*margin: 70px 0 0 0;*/ top:70px; right:120px; width:0;"><g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=16458"></g:plusone></div><div style="float: right; margin:0 0 70px 70px;"><a href="https://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-url="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=16458">Tweet</a></div>
<p>We’ve been told from a couple of different places that a new ultra-wide angle lens for APS-C is coming this year. It would be a replacement to the very good EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5. I wasn’t told exactly what the new lens would be.</p>
<p>If I had to speculate, I think it would be a constant aperture f/4 lens with IS. If the lens was released for the EOS 7D replacement, perhaps we would also see a build quality bump with something like weather sealing. Just because they’ve never done it for EF-S, doesn’t mean they couldn’t start now.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

Yongnuo's Flash System? ETTL system only

Hi guys, been looking up on flashes recently. It's going to be my first flash. I must say the RT system seems damn fine and attractive, but 600EX and ST-E3-RT is commanding a high price. So the question is this: what is recommended as a good replacement? I've looked at YN-E3-RT and have waited months for the YN-600EX (which to my dismay may not be an exact replacement for Canon 600EX). Pocket Wizards seem awfully expensive. Is there any recommendation of a good 3rd party flash and transmitter to get? 580EX II doesn't seem too attractive for now. Also, I would like to do off flash ETTL. Thanks.

Prime v Zoom Bokeh

Still trying to decide on whether or not to purchase new lens for portraits or use an existing lens so decided to take the two of them out and compare their bokeh's both at same focal length and f stop and at their best bokeh respective settings.

Lenses used Canon 70-200 F4L
Canon 85mm 1.8

As mentioned this is not a perfect wall chart experiment and i have not messed around with the shots apart from crop to get real life results.

What are your opinions ??

New PowerShot & EOS Cameras to Offer DOF Control?

<p>We’re told that Canon is working to implement depth of field control in upcoming PowerShot and Rebel DSLRs. The idea sounds like what Lytro is doing, or more recently what Google introduced for the Android camera.</p>
<p>There’s no mention of which camera(s) this would be introduced in, but it seems like a logical next step feature.</p>

Landscape Filters

I'd like to start building on my landscape toolbox and gradient filters are something I am sorely lacking. I'm aware of the LEE filter system and Fotodiox Wonderpana Freearc but there aren't suppliers in my region, so I would probably have to import myself. Anyway, I can't really get any hands on experience with either system so I am looking for comparisons between the two systems (or are there any others I should be looking at).

Are there any unique selling points or design flaws with either filter holder system. What about the range and quality of the filters themselves.

Advanced filters are quite an expensive niche product and I don't want to jump into a particular system without knowing what's out there. Any experience and advice appreciated.

hide and seek with the moon

After mulling about for a bit, I finally decided to bite the bullet and get a telescope. After much thinking and searching I decided to get a Sky-Watcher ProED 120mm Doublet APO Refractor. I saw it as a poor man's EF 800mm. Sure, it doesn't have AF, IS, or sharpest of corners... but, I now have a 900mm lens ;D.

I have only started this new part of my habit hobby. There's no equatorial mount... no GOTO tracker... they'll (likely) appear in due time. I've had this since last Thursday and am struggling with the Astrophotographer's curse, 30 days and 30 nights of rain (living in the Pacific NW isn't helping). Tonight was the first night I had any opportunity. For a 5 minute window, I saw a break in the clouds!

I present to you a "moonscape". Image taken with a Canon EF 2x Tele + EOS 5D3 mounted on a Arca-Swiss Z1 + Gitzo 2541 at 1/320 sec & ISO 6400. The photo has been touched up but uncropped in Lightroom 5.

For the seasoned astrophotographers lurking around, any advice? I know the ISO is a tad high for this, but I didn't have a lot of time and had to make sure I got the shot in less than 5 photos.

Canon 24-70 f/4L IS - macro mode any good?

To all those who have experience with the 24-70 F/4L's macro mode - do you find it's useful or is it just a gimmick? From what I've read the working distance is really short - about 3 cm!! That's going to pretty much rule out using it for insects and anything else which can run/fly away (not to mention sting or bite you!), but what about for things which can't/don't run away? Is the macro mode useful in practice for those things, or is the working distance so short you end up blocking all the light or running into other problems?

I quite like the idea of the 24-70 F/4L as a relatively light travel and hiking lens, but it's certainly not cheap. If it doubles as a decent macro lens too though (even though it's only 0.7 magnification), it might be the thing which makes me take the plunge (subject to selling my Sigma 24-70 2.8).

Thanks for any thoughts you can provide.

Designing a bird shooting station?

Hi,

I am not enough into bird work to justify investing in a 500 or 600mm lens, but I like feeding them, and thereby luring them in close for easy shooting with my 70-200 lens. My past setup was to hang feeders on the old awning frame over my deck, but the mess it made had become such that I am stopping that.

Now I want to set a post for bird feeder(s)s in the ground outside my picture window, mask off everything but a little hole to shoot thru, and let the mess happen in the grass. How does this sound:

A 4 x 4 post in the ground. A cross arm of some kind from which to hang the feeder. A thing like a flag holder or two mounted below so I can cut branches and have them stick out away from the feeder, so I can get shots of birds on a branch, not birds on a feeder.

Has anyone done something similar? I welcome input.

Thanks!

Before you buy your next prime...

Folks,

Before you buy you next prime lens, take a deep breath and watch this video. I've been lurking on this site for a while now and I must confess, I've been sucked into the lens acquiring vortex. I don't have a lot of lenses now, and I am not a pro, but I am at a point in my life where I can actually start to afford these toys. The discussion around here is generally geared towards and around specific lenses and their attributes but somehow or the other, I have managed to miss or avoid posts about a lens acquisition strategy. I stumbled across this video this morning and got some clarity. Please forgive me if it has been previously posted.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART vs Canon 50mm f/1.2 - Quick Comparison Photos

I received the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART a few days ago (I pre-ordered on B&H on April 11th at noon; it shipped April 28th)

I haven't seen too many user photos so thought I would provide some comparisons with my Canon f/1.2 in the event that might be helpful to some looking at this lens.

I have all Canon-branded lenses currently, except the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art, which I love. I have found it to be a good focal length for all around shooting and love it for low light. As such, I was interested in checking out the 50mm version, even though I've already got the Canon f/1.2 version (and I feel like I have a really great copy, as I had one prior to my current one and didn't get the same results/experience).

So I haven't really had a chance to use the new Sigma 50mm Art property, but I just quickly took some random pics in my house.

These are not meant to be great photos, but just provide some comparisons against Canon's f/1.2 version of the 50mm.

What I did was put each lens on its own Canon 5D Mk III (I have two) and took photos all at f/1.4 and at varying shutterspeeds (had on manual with Auto ISO). So the settings are more or less the same in each shot, one taken after another. So not scientific at all, but gives some comparison...

These are straight OOC JPEGS saved down to 1024 pixels for this forum... if you want any 100% crop of the originals for anything, let me know.

My biggest take-away is that there is more color and color contrast in the Sigma shots... and Canon blurs OOF lights more. Will have to experiment more with some night time / dark shots... Also, you can focus closer to the subject with the Sigma with autofocus. Sigma also has a quicker focus going from, say, across the room to something close up.

I know there's been talk about focusing issues... I was using single point autofocus, and didn't have any issues at all - it seemed to hit what I was focusing on pretty reliably. But again, these aren't great photos... just some quick snaps.

Currently, I'm really impressed with the Sigma. But am withholding judgment until I can take some portrait photos and put it through it's paces on that front...

In each photo below, the first example is the Canon 50mm f/1.2 and the second example is the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART:

Canon lens packing

So got a new L prime, UPS comes to deliver it, fumbles the shipping box and drops it about 4ft onto pavement. Lens still packet tightly in shipping box, of course. Checked for decentering using star chart and looks ok. Some abberations on the center dot at 1.4 but normal enough for ultra wide aperture.

I have to wonder though, how well do the Canon boxes protect the lens from shock? And, how much shock does it take to decenter or otherwise damage a lens (that exhibits no signs of physical damage)?

Wondering for in the case of this lens, and also when I ship a lens in the future...
