So since 2014 is supposed to be the year of the lens, I figured would put out a list of my "Dream" lenses and try a poll to see which ones would be the most exciting to people. I tried to think of lenses that would be feasible, no 20-2000mm F2.8 lenses allowed. Since Canon isn't giving us much fodder yet for the rumor mill on the lenses, let's make a little noise of our own.

As for me, my top lenses on my lust list would be a 12-14mm F4 EF, and a 50mm F2.0 Macro IS. What are your lust list lenses?

Sigma USB Dock does not work

I just got the Sigma dock for my 35 and 50 Art lenses. With the 50 everything works just fine. But with the 35 it does not work as it should.

I start the software, connect the lens to the dock, the software appears as it should and recognizes the lens with serial no. and firmware version. But one difference from the 50mm is that it does not read the lens settings at the beginning and in the service menu, I can only use Firmware Update. The Customization menu is inactive.

I confirm Firmware Update in the popup window (I have v1.00 and the new is v1.01). It loads the new firmware and tells me that Firmware update is complete You can disconnect the lens.

The problem is that I still have v1.00 and the Customization part of the Service Menu is still unavailable.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there anything I can do or is it Sigma Service next?

We were told at the end of 2013 that this year would turn out to be the “year of the lens”. We’re 5 months in and nothing has come to fruition yet. We’re still being told that this is the case, but nothing is coming until the second half of 2014, which is nearly upon us.

I do not recall a time when things were this quiet in the rumor world for Canon and new products. We do know that PowerShot announcements are coming relatively soon, most likely in May to prepare for the spring and summer buying season. The replacement of the SX50 IS will be the top end camera announced, although we have heard that a G17 is coming as well.

We get the odd bit of talk that the new EF 100-400 is being tested in Asia and it has also been suggested that this lens will be on testing stage for the World Cup in Brazil in June. Although, we’re hoping it’s announced and publicly tested on soccer’s (football’s) greatest stage. I would also assume that new bodies will be tested in Brazil, especially the follow-up to the EOS 7D. With Nikon announcing the replacement to the D300s some time soon with the new D9300, Canon will surely be doing the same thing in the prosumer APS-C segment.

For now, not much is being said and we’re hoping that changes very soon.

Does macro lenses of different focal lengths give the same image?

Let me explain my question a bit further. I have seen/used only two macro lenses till date Canon 100mm L and sigma 150mm OS. That also at a distance of more than 1 year. So I had no opportunity to test this question of mine.

What I am asking is, let's say I am photographing a small flower (pretty small) which is not going to occupy the entire image at 1:1 (let's say on a full frame camera). Now if I use different macro lenses - 50mm (Canon), [60mm (Tamron or Canon)-APS-C only], 70mm (Sigma), 90mm (Tamron), 100mm (Canon), 105mm (Sigma), 150mm (Sigma) or 180mm (Canon/Sigma/Tamron) - at 1:1 magnification focusing distance (varying the distance between the flower and my camera, of course) would I get the same image (not talking about sharpness here)? Probably this may be framed slightly differently, what is the importance and significance of the angle of view of different macro lenses at their minimum (or comparable magnification) focusing distances?

In case any of you have used more than one lenses at the same time you may have some idea about this. Any comment will be highly appreciated. Even better is if any of you have images like this to demonstrate the difference/similarities.

Sharpness of 17-40mm L?

Hey everybody,

A few days ago i bought a new 17-40mm L UW Lens, but I´m very dissapointed about the sharpness.
Is the blurriness at the edge and the corners normal for this lens?

Sorry for the silly question but this is my firs UW, 90% of my pictures were taken with the 70-200 f2.8 and this thing is razorsharp (Yes i know its a Tele).

Orginal Raws, out of the cam!

Canon needs to respond with SOMETHING

http://store.sony.com/sony-alpha-77-m2-dslr-zid27-ILCA77M2/cat-27-catid-All-Alpha-77-Cameras

Sony just release what appears to be an awesome camera, especially for the price. I am committed to Canon myself, but I think some people are starting to think about switching because these others like Sony are upping the quality of their products.

Canon doesn't have anything close to the 24mp, 79 AF points and 12 FPS...especially under $1500.

Curious to see what everyone else's thoughts are on this new Sony and where you think Canon falls within the competition.

Ability Enterprise / Canon - Dual Aperture

Dual Aperture keeps announcing its partners. Recently, it has announced its image sensor partner (Hynix/SiliconFile) and DSP partner (eWBM). Now the company says that it cooperates with Ability Enterprise on camera design. Ability Enterprise and Dual Aperture partner together on a technology licensing agreement whereby Ability Enterprise will incorporate Dual Aperture's 4-color sensor technology, image processing algorithms and various application software, into their latest line of camera module products.

Dual Aperture's technology utilizes a proprietary 4-color sensor design comprised of RGB and IR pixels. Built with separate apertures for the RGB and IR pixels, the sensor is able to generate two distinct images, one in the RGB spectrum and the other in the IR, with a single capture. This allows to estimate a depth of the image, as explained in a Youtube video:

Ability Enterprise is a Canon partner in Taiwan making modules for Canon!

Canon EF600mm f/4 IS USM II lens

I recently bought this lens. Canon Professional Services recommends shutting the Image Stabilization OFF when tripod mounted. The lens instruction manual is vague, stating that IS sometimes helps when tripod mounted. I read on another online forum that the IS senses when the lens is tripod mounted and compensates for such. My own tests were inconclusive in that some tripod mounted images with the IS turned on were sharper, while other images with the IS turned off were sharper. Does anyone have and feedback on this? Thanks. Mark W.
