A lightwight wildlife lens

Hi all,

My wife and I go on wildlife safari a lot, and until now she has been using my 24-105 on her 100D... she wants a longer lens, but does not want anything too big or heavy, but good IQ (not a big ask eh?)...

I initially thought of the 300 f/4L IS, but it heavier than I thought... then i thought about the 70-200 F/4L IS... 200 being 320mm on her crop body. It is lighter and smaller... it also works well with the 1.4x tc.

Any other thoughts/ideas/suggestions?

I already have the 70-200 2.8 IS II, but my wife finds that too heavy and uncomfortable. Unfortunately (?) she has become accustomed to good glass and I am in no position to argue about how much we should spend on it.

1DX burst - help needed

Hi all,
I am wonderring if anyone may have a theory, or have encoutered my little issue.
I am using a 1DX, YN-622c and Einstein 640.
Issue is with burst mode. >:(
When using lenses with widest aperture less than 2.0 (I tested it with 1.2, 1.4 and 2.0) the max burst I have is around 4 fps at any aperture. Einstein at any power level, but I tested it mainly at 1/16th to be able to shoot more than 4 times.
I can reach the standard 11 fps if the widest aperture is bigger or equal to 2.8 (tested it with 2.8 and 4.0)
The focal length seems not to affect it.
All work perfectly when I put a 3-stop ND filter.

I am wonderring if it is related to the 1DX , the Yongnuo or the Einstein.
Any theory is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Besisika

Sigma Art and Zeiss Otus: Too Big Too Heavy Too Much ???

In amongst the various reviews, there have been a few comments regarding the size and weight of this new breed of lenses. I am thrilled with my purchase of the Sigma 35/1.4 Art and am also very impressed with their 50/1.4 Art ... and completely blown away by the IQ of the Otus 50/1.4. However, the sheer size and weight of these chunky things really begins to add up in my bag, and I won't be inclined to add another similarly-sized lens anytime soon. Are big and heavy really synonymous with quality? Is this an issue with your current line-up of lenses and will this be a factor in your future purchases?

EF 400L f/5.6 vs. Tamron 150-600

I have around $1,200 in my new lens budget and am debating between these two lenses. I'd like to purchase in the next month or so as we plan to take a vacation to Alaska in June and I really need a longer lens for wildlife shots. After the AK vacation, I would use the lens primarily for wildlife closer to home (wild turkeys, bears, deer, maybe a few birds, etc.) and some limited outdoor sports like baseball and soccer.

My other tele lens is a 70-200 2.8 II and I have a 2xIII extender. This lens is still really good even with the 2x extender, so maybe I should continue with this combo and save my money toward an 85 1.2 II?

From reading reviews and looking at the lens sharpness tool at TDP, it appears the 400 is sharper overall. But it of course lacks the zooms flexibility and vibration control. At this point, I'm leaning a little toward the 400 5.6 as I expect I would use the zoom primarily at 400+.

Thoughts?

Canon EF 28mm f1.8 USM

I see no one on CR has been brave enough to admit to owning the 28/1.8 let alone posting any shots with it.

A much maligned and misunderstood lens, it's reputation in tatters from the on line review specialists.

Actually it's damn sharp in the broad centre from 2.8 onwards and then gets quite sharp again at the very edges having had a dog's breakfast somewhere in between. Can't match the excellent 28/2.8 IS towards the edge of frame but then it doesn't vignette at f2.8.

Leica T and Canon EOS M

Got no interest in the latest Leica T "lifestyle accessoire".
But I do find their starting lens lineup (T-mount) interesting, and the overlap with the EF-M "system":

Leica 18-56mm f/3.5-5.6 ..... Canon 18-55 f/3.5-5.6
Leica 23 mm f/2 ................... Canon 22 f/2.0
Leica 11-23mm f/3,5-4,5 ...... Canon 11-22 f/4.0-5.6
Leica 55-135 mm f/3,5-4,5 ... X

A compact EF-M 55-135 f/4.0 IS would be nice addition to the EOS-M "system" ... along with a EOS M3 with top-notch AF-system, EVF.

<p>What was the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/04/canon-hong-kong-announcement-april-24-2014/" target="_blank">teaser from the other day on the Canon Hong Kong Facebook page</a> for? Incredible Godox Witstro 360 flash (does HSS too!)

I've just had a test drive of the incredibly gutsy Godox Witstro AD360. Impressed? Oh yes.
http://www.godox.com/EN/Products_Camera_Flash_Witstro_AD180&AD360_Powerfou&Portable_Flash.html
Its name suggests a 360w/s output but I'd rate it at a true 300w/s output. And it's hot-shoe mountable. A Canon 580EXII is rated at around 60-80 w/s, price with battery & inverter around the same as a 600 ex-rt.

The clincher is that with the right trigger it delivers clean HSS right up to 1/8000 sec on a 5D3 when triggered with a Phottix Odin.
http://www.phottix.com/en/phottix-odin-ttl.html I'd like to know if HSS was achievable with Yongnuo 622C triggers.

Has anyone else checked out the Witstro?

Canon Profits Grow in 2014 on Equipment Sales & Reshuffling of Camera Business

<p><strong>TOKYO, April 24 (Reuters) -</strong> Canon Inc inched up its 2014 operating profit target on Thursday due to strong sales of office copiers and printers in the first quarter, and said a reshuffle of its camera line-up had also helped boost margins.</p>
<p>Canon said office equipment sales rose by 9.7 percent in the first quarter, helping lift operating profits by 51 percent to a higher-than-expected 82.6 billion yen ($806.76 million).</p>
<p>Camera sales, however, fell by 22 percent year-on-year in the quarter, as the world’s biggest camera maker struggled with the prevalence of high-quality smartphone cameras and a saturation in the high-end, single-lens-reflex camera market.</p>
<p>Chief Financial Officer Toshizo Tanaka told an earnings briefing that sales of pricier compact cameras had actually increased after Canon adjusted its camera production and line-up in the first quarter to meet customers’ demand for more sophisticated products.</p>
<p>But he said a recovery would take time.</p>
<p>“Determining whether we can achieve the growth we are hoping for will take some time,” Tanaka said. “Things are getting better in China and Europe, but it will take a while to see whether that will continue.”</p>

1D X Troubles (not funny)

Coming from a 5DIII, I'm having some issues with my 1D X. Some of them might just be my ignorance, but others are just frustrating me. And a few just seem impossible to solve.

First of all, it took me 3 or 4 days to figure out that the rubber plug was not the battery. After removing that, I was able to get the battery into the camera. After another week of experimenting, I realized that Canon has moved the power switch back to where it was on my 5DII. That seems so backwards from a supposedly innovative company. After that, I ran into the following:

1. My camera is missing the mode dial
2. I'm scaring people and filling up my memory card because each time I push the shutter it goes really fast
3. Related to #2, my flash tried to keep up but ended up burning out
4. It's missing the pop-up flash, just like my 5DII and 5DIII. What's happened to Canon's quality control?
5. No matter how hard I try, I can't get the battery grip off
6. The memory card door is on the back and won't slide open
7. It came with a double battery charger, but only one battery, I must have gotten ripped off - damn white box sellers!
8. My charger came with a cord instead of a flip out outlet - must be a foreign model?
9. My camera has 3 extra DOF preview buttons - they must have had a lot of spares?
10. I flipped some lever or something and now my viewfinder is blacked out???

Any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

dual pixel tech going forward

On the 70D, canon has two photo-diodes per pixel almost across the entire sensor. The fact that they can get useable phase information from them suggests that they can read them independently.

So, could they change the bayer filter out and double resolution rather than get sensor level phase detection? Perhaps being co-located they couldn't use a traditional bayer design, but could they for example have green AND either red or blue at every pixel?

If so, that could be a cost-effective way forward to producing 1DmkV and 1DmkVs cameras once DPAF is perfected to the point that it equals or betters SIR AF. The former could have a traditional bayer filter with the second processor dedicated to amazing autofocus; the latter could have double the resolution and use a simpler last-gen SIR AF unit.

I am probably fundamentally misunderstanding the implications of having two photo-diodes per pixel, though. More likely DPAF is their way into high end mirrorless.

Canon posts 1Q14 Financial Results

The highlights from the 1st quarter of 2014:

  • Unit sales of interchangeable lens cameras (ILC) dropped 7% y/y
  • Unit sales of compact digital cameras dropped 30% y/y
  • Revenue from total camera sales dropped 6.7% y/y
  • For Canon, Inc. overall, 1Q14 sales are +6%, gross profit is +12% and net income is +16%, due to solid performance in office and industrial segments

Projections for FY2014 are -1% / -20% for ILC / compact sales, respectively, and an 8.2% drop in revenue from camera sales.

Canon eos 1 club

Does any body know about the 1d owners club? I was looking at the Hong Kong Canon web site to look for any announcements and ran across a spot on their site pointing out the benefits for all 1d owners from 1dc to the original 1d. It seems to be tied to Canon professional services with things like up to 50 percent studio rental discount and express costumer service among other things but when I went to the USA website I didn't see anything. I'm a new 1d owner so it would be cool but not really a big deal, just curious.

Power of Canon 1Dx

Hello folks,

here is my latest slide-show work, showing dancers of 13th PLESOKAZ - international dance festival, annually maintained in Pozega / Croatia.
I used aprox. 900 pictures (post production killed me :o ) in order to show power of Canon 1Dx.
Thank you all for watching ;)

Tamron 150-600 with 2X converter? any success?

I have wanted to try the new Tamron 150-600 with a 2X but have struck out. When I got the lens I was hoping my Canon would work. It didn't since the black inner ring was to long. Then I took the lens to the local Camera shop and tried a Kenko. My Camera got a lens error and we couldn't get it to work either.

Has anyone had any success using a 2X on thier 150-600 Tamron?

So for the record
Kenko = failure, electronic
Canon = Failure do to design length.

Canons venerable EF100-400L reviewed for wildlife

About as old of a new lens that you can get, the EF 100-400L is a still a very versatile, and very popular lens choice amongst lots of photographers, especially those who shoot wildlife and/or travel a lot.
I have reviewed the lens with the needs of wildlife photography in midn, and with experience shooting the lens with a host of different Canon bodies, including the 5Dmk3 and 1Dmk4. I also compared some results from the EF 100-400L f4.5-5.6 IS with its smaller but newer cousin, the EF 70-300L f4-5.6 IS.
Here is the link to the review:

Hope there is something useful in there for interested readers.

Sigma is planning to announce a 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art series lens at Photokina with availability coming in October of 2014.</p>
<p>There has been no word on the possible 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art or 135mm f/1.8DG HSM Art lenses. I think both the 85 and 135 would be more highly desired than a 24mm prime, though if it’s as good as the 35mm or 50mm, we’ll take it anyway.</p>
