Sigma 24mm F/1.4 Art lens is apparently in the works!

The Sigma Art sharpness train keeps on rolling:
http://photorumors.com/2014/04/22/sigma-24mm-f1-4-art-lens-coming-in-october/

And you can't blame them. That's another fast Canon prime that's only sharp in the center wide open (see graphic from photozone).

Sorry for those pining for an 85 Art, but at least according to Photo Rumors, the 24 Art is next.

Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art series lens. As you’re probably used to reading, this lens is a stellar performer and nearly as good optically as the Zeiss 55 f/1.4 Otus, which costs 4 times as much.

Says Bryan

“While I will dock a few points from this lens for occasional AF inconsistency, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens is now the overwhelming favorite in the 50mm field. This lens delivers excellent image quality, has a beautiful design and for what you get, a very attractive price. The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens is the easy 50mm choice for those with a moderate budget.”

Focus indication with manual lenses

Could anyone please explain why cameras (like my 7D) do not give focus indication with full manual lenses (that is no aperture data).
I would think the camera would be able to know if the focus is one direction or the other, so it could use two arrows to report the info it gets from the AF sensor.
It seems that only works with lenses that provide aperture data, but I am not figuring what the aperture is needed for.
If there is really no way that it works, I am at least expecting the new Dual-Pixel cameras will solve that.
Thanks in advance for any help

Canon Hong Kong is announcing something on April 24, 2014. I think it’s safe to say it won’t be a white EOS camera this time.

The text in this teaser says: “Beauty lies not in objects, but in the interaction between the shadow and light created by objects.”

I wouldn’t expect anything too earth shattering, as these regional announcements are generally minor.

5D3 Select AF area

Hey!

I have this problem since I have bought my 5D3 1 year ago but, I never cared because I used the AF like that even on my previous DSLR. However now I need to change it. As you can see there is no option to deselect it and when I shoot I cant choose anything else than that.
I should note that in Auto its auto selection 61 pt AF.

Anyone have met with this problem before?

Thank you!

Canon teaser for 4/24 announcement -- new fast prime?

Check it out:

I have no idea how Photo Rumors came to the conclusion that it's a fast prime, but FYI regardless.

I'll be the first to say that this would be a great time to unveil the non-L 50mm F/nooneknows IS lens before everyone gives their ducats to Sigma. :P

$10,000

If you had $10,000 to spend on photography gear to put together a jack of all trades kit, what would you include, assuming you were starting from scratch.
Here's what I would likely put together...

$4000 5D3 kit with 24-105
$1070 Tamron SP 150 - 600
$300 Rokinon 14mm 2.8
$1050 Canon 100mm 2.8L Macro IS
$1350 Canon 70 - 200 f4L IS
$500 On a tripod... not sure what though
$1280 600 RT x2 and ST E3 RT transmitter kit

LensTip Review of the Sigma 50 mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

LensTip has posted their Review and it is a glowing one. I consider them to be some of the toughest reviewers (check out their 50L or Nikon 58mm reviews for example) so this is quite an endorsement for the new Sigma.

Here's what they had to say:

Summary

Pros:

stylish casing of good quality,
sensational image quality in the frame centre,
very good image quality on the edge of the frame,
slight longitudinal chromatic aberration,
excellent correction of lateral chromatic aberration,
lowest distortion level in this class of equipment,
good correction of spherical aberration,
moderate astigmatism,
silent and quick autofocus in most of cases,
nice appearance of defocused images,
rich accessory kit,
excellent price/quality ratio.

Cons:

problems with autofocus when the lens is attached to the Canon 1 Ds MkIII,
coma level in the corners of full frame could have been lower.

The list of advantages of the tested Sigma is really impressive; add to it the fact that it can compete on equal terms with the Zeiss Otus, a device four times as expensive, and in some categories (e.g. sharpness on the frame edge, lateral chromatic aberration, distortion or vignetting) it even prevails over it. Those arguments are so strong that we didn’t have any qualms about giving the Sigma our “Editors Choice Award” badge, even though it had a slight coma slip-up during our test and its autofocus performance on the EOS 1 Ds MkIII was patchy.

New TS-E Lenses for Photokina [CR2]

We’re told to expect two new Tilt-Shift lenses for Photokina 2014 in September. One will be a direct replacement of the TS-E 45mm f/2.8 and the other will be a longer focal length, however it won’t be a direct replacement of the TS-E 90mm f/2.8.

Both of the new tilt-shift lenses will get the L designation. We’re also told that the new tilt-shift lenses will have a unique feature, though at the moment we don’t know what that might be.

Value Lens for birding

Just wondering if anyone has any advice about a (relatively) inexpensive strategy for casual bird shooting.

Right now I use a 5D3 or 5D2 for most of my work (landscapes) but I do some wildlife/bird shooting as well. I use a 7D with the 70-300L for this. It has produced some very good results. The low light performance of the 7D is good, but obviously not 5D caliber. The 7D shoots faster, but there is no doubt the AF on it misses significantly more than the 5D3.

I have used the 5D3/70-300L combo, it focuses great, low light not a problem but of course the reach isn't there, and cropping seems like a wash if you compare both.

Huge white lenses are too expensive and too bulky for the amount I would use them.

So I was thinking of getting a 400 5.6L for the 5D3 to remedy the above. Any thoughts if this makes sense? Anybody try it for this scenario? I realize there is no IS and it's not the fastest , which is too bad since bird photography for me means hand holding the combo because at least around here, they fly around a lot, so a tripod is out.........

Does this make sense? The other option I guess is to trade the 7D for either a 70D or wait for the 7D2. Only problem there is I am not sure it makes $ense to get another APS-C body just for this type of shooting.

Thanks for any advice, and if anybody has any experience with the 5D3/400 5.6 used as above that I would like to hear about it.

Yongnuo 622 Set

Hello all

After some good advice my first OFC set up arrived and used it at first event yesterday.

Really good results just firing flashes off camera using three tranceivers and two 580exIIs , no problem at all through Ettl worked a treat.

However on the night during the disco / dance the ettl just was not cutting it and was shooting far too low power to light the dance floor in big room so went to manual flash power of 1/4 which was what was needed. from here starting having issues . the first camera ( 5d3 with 622 ) kept resetting itself to ETTL after a couple of minutes of non use , the second camera ( 5dmk2 + 622 ) would not go into manual mode on the flash function screen at all. I was using one flash ( 580exII + 622 ) on light stand for the two cameras.

Tried going through the booklet but its written pretty badly and cant see anything that offers an explanation , is it possible to fire two cameras with manual flash settings for one or two flashes ?

Is there any reason that the camera sets itself back to ETTL ?

thank you in advance Andrew

Will Sigma 50/1.4 Art push Canon to release a 50/1.2L II?

The Canon 50mm F1.2L certainly can produce a beautiful photo, and has wonderful bokeh, but there are still many complaints that users have regarding softness wide open, focus shift, and major AF shortcomings. This lens was released 8 years ago. Do folks think that Sigma's production of their 50 F1.4 art will put pressure on Canon to release a higher-performing 50 F1.2L II to outcompete it? If the Sigma ends up performing as well as anticipated, at its price I would think many 50L users might jump ship. Curious to hear folks' thoughts on this...

Typhoon Haiyan: 4 months later

On March 7-8 I went around the islands of Leyte and Samar to survey the progress being made in the rehabilitation of Haiyan-hit areas of Eastern Visayas in the Philippines. Although disheartening from a a local's point of view I see that life is slowly going back to normal.

Villa Calicoan by 500px.com/dolina, on Flickr

The image above was taken at Guiuan, Eastern Samar where the typhoon (known as Yolanda in the Philippines) first made landfull on November 8. I have been here before because of the thriving surfing community that I take personal interest in photographing as often as I can.

70D & 10-22mm suggested landscape/real estate settings

I will be shooting interior and exterior shots with a 70D and 10-22mm lens in a couple of days. I used to shoot real estate photography almost a decade ago - I haven't touched a Canon since. I'm trying to prep myself on the 70D which I just got my hands on literally an hour ago. I have the 10-22mm for real estate shots and the 24-105L for everything else including the video i'll need to be taking.

What is the suggested Program setting (Av, P, M, etc.) to shoot these type of real estate shots? I need a full, sharp photo across the entire image. All shots will be on a tripod with good lighting throughout.

Suggested aperture?
Suggested AF mode? AF area selection mode? Or is it best to manually focus when shooting real estate?

Any other suggestions that will help me produce quality shots?

Thank you in advance for your opinions!
