1Dx EC in Manual Mode Question

Excuse my ignorance (not just on this topic, but everything else too).

I noticed recently that having been shooting in Tv mode with a +2/3 EC, I must have changed some setting where it obeys the EC setting in Manual. Not full manual obviously, but when using auto ISO. So for instance if I shoot at 1/500s, +2/3 EC in Tv mode, then switch to M mode and set 1/500s, f/4, auto ISO, the +2/3 EC still remains and it adjusts accordingly. Previously, when I switched from Av or Tv mode back to M mode, the EC bar was never there and I couldn't do it. I wonder what I did? I'll check through my settings more but could it be from the newest firmware version where you CAN do EC in M mode and I just didn't know it? Thanks.

Bokeh onion rings

The Zeiss Otus 55 f1.4 is a phenomenal lens, but it has been criticized for having onion ring bokeh. I have numerous examples of this, some posted over at this thread:

http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=18169.msg387033#new

Attached are 4 examples. The first one has AC light bulbs. The second one is candle lights. The third is Christmas tree lights and reflections from the decorations on the tree and the fourth is a DC lightbulb.

As you can see, the first and third have the rings, the other two does not. I do not understand why this happens, but it seems to be related to AC light vs. natural or DC light.

I have tried this with numerous lenses (Otus, Sigma 35/1.4A, 85/1.2L II, 24-70/2.8L II) with the same result. The sharper the lens, the more obvious it becomes. So to me it seems that this phenomena has its cause outside of the lens.

Can someone please explain what this is.

MUSIC VIDEO: Jeff Campbell "Save Me" Shot with the 70D

Wanted to share: I just recently shot this new music video by Bay Area musician Jeff Campbell, "Save Me," shot on the Canon 70D with only the help of tripods and a monopod. Black and white, flares galore. The camera was great, through and through. Had much tighter focus than my 7D. Have a watch:

Would love to know what YOU think!
Thanks!

So using my 24-70 F2.8 for years, I always wondered why my images were never tack sharp, so I thought stopping down to F4-5.6 and using faster shutter speeds would make my images sharper, and they did. Although I decided to maybe try and see if my lens was calibrated ( just for fun ) So I took a ruler, set it up at an angle against the window, focused at the number 5, and found out that it wasn't in sharp focus ( at F2.8 ) But 8 was in focus. So I calibrated it to -15 and now my lens focuses at the number 5. I also checked if there was any focus shifting but there wasn't any. ° ͜ʖ °

I feel pretty silly now, thinking my images weren't sharp because of slow shutter speeds/using wide apertures. :P

"MAP" pricing....How long will it last????

So every so often Canon decides to enforce their "Minimum Advertised Price" policy sending prices for their cameras and lenses back to "MSRP" levels. Seems like price fixing to me but apparently it's legal. I was ready to purchase a Canon 6D With 24-105mm lens but went from being priced at $1999 to $2,499 overnight. I did not buy the 6D and I am glad because I decided not to compromise and buy the 5D Mk II. Having said that I will not pay MSRP. I am in no hurry and will wait for a sale. My question is how long do retailers go along with Canon before before they begin offering discounts on cameras and lenses. I don't see how raising prices across the board helps Canon sales, but I am no business expert. I am sure they know something I don't, but they will not get one dollar from me unless the gear is discounted. Any thoughts out there????

With all the pictures I take, the camera photo count rolls over. Sure would be nice if Canon expanded the file count. would also benefit people wanting to know how my shutter releases have taken place??

<p>The lens receives pretty good marks in the review, though a few things such as the lack of weather sealing, size and microcontrast. Though the lens is remarkably sharp and the autofocus works well.</p>

<p>A patent which appears to be for the EF-M mount has appeared. In APS-C, this lens would be a 35-75mm f/3.5-5.6.</p>
<p>Canon has stated that more lenses are coming for EOS M, and that could potentially mean the North American and European markets are still on Canon’s radar for the EOS M system. My bet is we’ll see an EOS M3 to re-introduce the product line to a global market.</p>

New lens - Sigma vs. Canon

Hello,

First post on CR! Been a long time follower.

I have a 60D with an 18-200mm and 50mm f/1.8. I'm buying my next lens this spring and have my eye on the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8.

I have weighed the options of the fast lens vs. IS of the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 and am leaning more to the sigma. Primary reasons are that I am unsure how useful IS really is in the 18-35 range and with my 50mm f/1.8, I don't really care about the reach difference between 35 and 55.

I should also add that I own a tripod and am interested in the 18-xx range because my 18-200 is not very good at the 18 range. I take lots of pictures of family and this range is very nice on the crop sensor.

Does anyone have any input on this? Any reason to not buy the Sigma? Just trying to make sure I don't spend $1000 on the wrong lens.

Appreciate any replies.

Hey, I hope this hasn't been done before, and that it's okay to ask. Ever since I got into bird photography, there's been no such thing as too much focal length. So it often surprises me how short the longest lens other people use. Of course if you're not photographing small things far away, long lenses are of little use.

I recently got yet another teleconverter, and out of interest stacked them all for shots at 5600mm. It's not useable for most purposes but I was able to photograph surface features on Mars, and get detailed shots of the moon (image stacking being essential for both!).

Anyway, what's the longest focal length you've used? And if you want to comment, are you happy with that, or do you feel you need more reach?

(Standard 'length isn't everything' disclaimer).

Kitlenses - 50D

Hi,

I would like to buy me a 2nd Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. But during my search I also saw a few other lenses that made me wonder if they would be a good alternative..
- Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (non STM) I have the opportunity to buy a second handed one at 175€..
- Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
- Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
- Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

Anyone for some advice, or good occasion tips? Thx! ;)

Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG ASP HSM II versus Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC

I am gearing up for a new project: shooting historical buildings from a close distance, so I need an extreme wide angle lens. I am currently using a Canon 6D with a 17-40mm f/4L, but I need a wider lens. I am considering a Sigma 12-24mm or a Samyang 14mm. I would like to know if anyone has experience with both lenses on a 6D (or another Canon full frame camera) and could comment on performance and specially if the Sigma is significantly wider than the Samyang (I could not find pictures of the same setting shot with both lenses).

Thanks for your opinions.

Damaged 70-200 2.8 II, suggestions

A few days ago I dropped my 6D with 70-200 2.8 II mounted from about 2 feet onto a concrete surface. The lens landed on the lens cap at a slight angle. The lens cap was totally destroyed, I had to finish breaking it apart to remove it. Once I got the cap off, I was relieved to find the front element was unbroken with only a couple of minor scratches (I assume from the lens cap). Optically, the lens appears to be OK, but I really haven't had time to do much testing or perform AFMA with Focal. Some quick AF testing shows its pretty close and test pictures appear to be clear and sharp. I plan to take some brick wall pictures this weekend to look for evidence of decentering or other issues.

The one problem I've found so far the end is bent as shown in the attached pictures. So, I'm unable to mount any ND or CPL filters, which is inconvenient.

The lens in insured for damage on our homeowners insurance account, but with $400 deductible.

Is this something Canon can repair? Any idea about cost? Anything else I should be concerned about?

Thanks

Edit: the specs visible in the picture are dust, I gave the front element a good cleaning after the pictures were taken and some of what I thought were scratches came off, overall the front elements looks good
