<p><b>Ronkonkoma, NY, April 1, 2014</b> – Today, Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the acquisition of Korean-based Samyang Optics Company Limited. Known for its high quality manual lenses, Samyang offers expertise in production efficiencies and brand management that will greatly benefit the world’s largest family-operated lens manufacturer.</p>
<p>“We are very proud to integrate Samyang into our organization. This is a symbiotic relationship that will pay excellent dividends to the photographic community,” says Machyzo Yamakiro, Excecutive Vice President of Sigma Corporation.</p>
<p>All of Samyang’s manual-only lenses will represent a new Global Vision line at Sigma – “Classic” – which will join the already popular and well-respected Art, Contemporary and Sports lines. Hallmarks of Sigma’s new Classic lenses will be simplicity, superb performance and affordability.</p>
<p>“While the Samyang/Rokinon/Bower/Walimex/Pro-Optic/Opteka names will not live on, their spirited defiance of modern technology will continue in our ‘Classic’ vision for budget-minded photographers,” says Yamakiro.</p>
<p>Distribution of Sigma’s Classic lenses will begin in May 2014.</p>

softbox

I've invested in some alien bees and some softboxes. AB400 and AB800 - a 32x40 softbox and a 30x60 softbox. I'm in my basement and the 30x60 softbox seems so LARGE. 20'x40' area i'm working with with maybe a 7/8' ceiling height. Is the 30x60 too big for my area? - (I mainly got it for photographing babies as I read the larger the softbox the softer the light) . I'm shooting at different dof depending on how many people in the shot.

I'm just starting out with indoor strobe photography so I'm a nervous wreck and having trouble trying to get everything to work. When working with one light last night (800 32x40box) I found that it gave off plenty of light at the lowest power that I'm wondering if I will be find with just light and a reflector?

Any thoughts or opinions

600 ex-rt Automatic Zoom Flash Coverage troubleshoot

In my 600 ex-rt I'm trying to set my zoom coverage to be automatic, and the "A" option seems to have disappeared from my LCD display! All I see is the manual option "M" and then an option for "Zoom ---- mm". I'm shooting in ETTL flash mode.
I can set the zoom to manual but when I use the dial to turn to auto the A never comes on nor does it display the zoom amount. The camera, in its flash controls, thinks the flash is set to auto zoom. Cleaning the contacts doesn't help. Any ideas how I can get the "A" option to reappear? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

David

Setting up 1DX Autofocus after Firmware V. 2.03

The release of firmware V2.03 both improved the low light performance of the 1DX AF. The new firmware really expands and extends the existing AF parameters, and also adds more options to fine tune the AF configuration to ones own needs.
As a wildlife photographer who gets to shoot moving subjects a lot in my line of work, I have just put up a new post on my website sharing what works for me with regard to understanding and setting up the 1DX AF system. The post will also have some relevance to 5Dmk3 shooters, given the similarity of the AF systems in some regards.

quite a bit about the EOS-M too.

Another interesting analysis that can be gleaned from the EOS M is the problematic decision to put a 4+ year old sensor in a brand new camera. Below is a side by side screenshot from DxO Mark comparing the EOS M/7D sensor to the Fuji X100 sensor. Personally, I think their findings are spot on. For the attributes they are testing, the X100 has a better sensor. However, I routinely get comparable to better results from the EOS M, than I got from the X100, despite the advantages of the X100’s imaging chip. I don’t know all the reasons for it, but it isn’t that difficult to speculate about some of them: First, there’s a 50% advantage for the EOS M in pixel count--18MP, as opposed to 12, and it even has a slight advantage in pixel count to the X100s, 18 to 16. The EOS M has a much more robust A/D processor, which among other things likely accounts for why the high ISO performance is a bit better on the EOS M. (Class leading high ISO performance has always been a Canon trademark.) But, I think the biggest difference is that you can remove the quite good, but hardly world class, EOS M lens, and use other lenses with the camera, which are world class. You can see the difference in a heartbeat, as you import the RAW files into Lightroom before you even touch them in post. It’s easy to spot the files shot with a Zeiss T* ZM lens, as opposed to the Canon lens.

Entry Level SLR Camera or a Good Point & Shoot Camera

Hi Everyone

I am Dr Kunvar Harsh Upveja from India . I am Amateur in the field of Photography but I am very much fascinated by photographs clicked with good depth of filed(blurred background pics) so I am looking for a SLR camera and at the same time have a very limited budget of Rs 25,000.
1. Either I am thinking of buying Sony Alpha A3000 (18-55 mm lens) DSLR- camera or any suggestions of SLR camera in Canon which can fit in my pocket ?
2. Should I go for some good Point & shoot camera in this range rather than buying Entry level DSLR ?
3. How far does the body of camera matters in buying DSLR camera ? I mean if I want to upgrade this DSLR using other lenses. it would be possible with good efficiency or this Entry level will remain entry level only ?

Thank you in advance

Photography in the Palouse

I noted that there is a photography event and workshop right on my back doorstep in the Palouse, which is the name that we use when referring to the area South of Spokane, Washington. The Palouse river winds its way thru the hills, so that might be the reason for the name.

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/workshops/palouse___a_lula_podas_workshop.shtml

The rolling hills have huge wheat crops, with special combines that can climb the steep hills as well as run at a steep angle on the sides of the hills. Its not Kansas, but there is wheat as far as you can see, and a good ways beyond. I attended Washington State University in the heart of "The Palouse" many years ago.

With all the beautiful scenery here locally, I should be spending more time taking photos.

Canon Interested in Acquiring Panasonic's Camera Division? [CR1]

<p>An article on Planet5D talking about Panasonic potentially dropping the Micro 4/3 system (except for the GH4) also mentions the possibility of Canon acquiring Panasonic’s camera division. We’ve heard various things in the past about Canon acquiring camera technologies and companies, but nothing has ever come of it. It’s usually been focused around medium format companies or print technology companies such as Kodak.</p>
<p><strong>From Planet5D</strong>

<em>I heard from some very reliable sources that Canon is about to take over the Panasonic camera division. And that Olympus retreats from MFT too.</em></p>
<p>I have no idea what Panasonic has that Canon would want, perhaps there’s some video technology or patents that are of interest. I am reminded of a few articles I’ve read about the camera industry needing a giant shakeup. One of the suggested shakeups is less camera manufacturers. Panasonic, while making some very good products in the industry, seems to relegated to a niche market of budget conscience videographers and photographers.</p>
<p>Whether or not this is true doesn’t matter, it’s a telling reminder of the state of the industry. Some companies are going to be leaving the camera marketplace in the coming years, there just isn’t enough growth to keep companies profitable. Canon and Nikon are safe, though the latter isn’t exactly a profit machine. Sony seems content of giving it their all to find a place in the photography world and Fuji is making some cool niche products and are profitable. Leica has become a lifestyle brand, and the Louis Vuitton customer will continue to purchase the high margin German cameras. The rest? I’m not sure how much longer we’ll see Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung and Ricoh/Pentax in the game, I expect at least 2 of those names will be moving onto other things.</p>

When Canon registers a patent, what does it mean?

I realize the meaning of getting a patent. However, I don't know how it impacts Canon's offerings. Things that would be interesting to know:

1) What percent of patents actually become production lenses?
2) What's the shortest amount of time that has transpired between a Canon patent and a production lens?
3) What's the average amount of time that transpires between a Canon patent and a resulting production lens (assuming that there IS a lens produced).

I always find the announcements of patents interesting, but have often wondered about how significant it is so far as the availability of a real product.

Thanks for any insights.

High Concept Photography

There's a cool article by Ian Plant in this month's Outdoor Photographer called "The High Concept Image" (link) and it's inspired a blog on Sigma's site by David FitzSimmons (link). It goes along with Edward Weston's quote, "Good composition is the strongest way of seeing."

I think it's a cool concept and so I think we should start a thread to share what we consider to be our best "high concept" images. I'll start it off with these three:

Pro-100 - Rebate and Quality Question

Today is the last day for this rebate period on the Pro-100. It seems to be pretty regularly renewed. Do we think the same will be true this time?

I'm currently printing with an MG6220. The reproduction of detail is pretty good but no matter what I do the color reproduction is lousy - lots of a greenish brown overtone in most portraits. I'm assuming the Pro-100 would be a lot better? I'm more interested in the printer for quality and color accuracy than I am with the wide format nature of the printer.

Thanks everyone,

Christian

Which lense now?

I just got me a Canon 70D and I've had the nifty fifty for a while now and my question is which lense to get next? I do mostly filming in narrative form as I film my archery hunts but take photos as well with most of them being timelapses. I'm stuck between the 70-200 f4, Rokinon 35mm cine, Rokinon 16mm cine, or an all around lens like the 24-105 L. What would you get? Thanks.

Canon EF 15mm f2.8 or Sigma DG 15mm f2.8

Dear all.

I want a fisheye lens for my Canon 5D3 and currently sells only on fisheye lens (EF 8-15mm f4L) but the price is very steep for a lens that I will be using less frequently than others.
Hence, I am considering purchasing on eBay the discontinued Canon EF 15mm f2.8 or the Sigma DG 15mm f2.8. I have read pros and cons of both lenses being the Sigma more recent and faster focus.
Do any of you have experienced shooting with any or both lenses? What would be your suggestion?

Regards,

help! shot a rainy tournament and 6D info/playback button stopped working

This morning it was raining a ton but I was using a plastic bag to cover my 6D as I shot a quidditch tourney. As time went on, my playback button stopped working, the info button stopped working but miraculously the autofocus was still working and i kept shooting and the photos came out great! right now I'm cranking up the heater and then I took out the battery but I read that one of the most important things is to fight the urge to turn on the camera and check if its ok. And it's quite a fight!

I have an important tournament this upcoming weekend. I am really worried but then again, I'm sure I can do without the playback button and infobutton.

What else can I do? Can I check it tomorrow morning?

It's interesting as I've shot with my XSi in such conditions before and it has always lived to tell more stories.
