Review: Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro

Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM macro lens.

At it’s current price of $669 after an instant rebate, this macro lens comes highly recommended when compared to the Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS macro, which is currently retailing for $1033. Bryan does say the Canon is the better lens, but is it $400 better?

Says Bryan:

“I’ve had the Sigma 105 OS macro lens in my kit for over two years and have used it with some frequency. Some of the product images you have been seeing in the recent reviews have been captured with this lens and I have used it for many other needs. While this lens has a little room for improvement (especially with the IS system), the image quality it has reliably delivered has been excellent. I’m comfortable using the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens for important macro projects that come my way.”

When can we drop 'D' for 'Digital'

I'm old enough to remember when cars had carburettors. When fuel injection came along, many car makers trumpeted the development by adding an 'i' to their car names. As far as I know (and I stand to be corrected), the last car that BMW made with a carburettor was in 1987, yet I can still buy a BMW 320i 27 years later. The 'i' has surely been redundant for a very long time.

How long will it be before they call our cameras SLRs instead of DSLRs? When will the 'D' become redundant?

Spring Moths - Post yours

This "little" fella was on my house today. I would have loved to gotten him on a better background, but I didn't want to disturb him. I used an EF-S 60 macro for this and didn't think they turned out half bad. It gave me a chance to try out my new tripod and head (manfrotto 055CXPRO3, Giottos MH1300 ).

Do you have some moth or butterfly pics? Post yours :)

Regards,

-w

Wiggly focusing ring.

So a few weeks ago I was trying out a new system of attaching my 400f5.6 to the shoulder strap of my pack.
It was extremely convenient. Too convenient, and when the last thing in the world I expected to happen, happened (I tripped on my own snowshoes), the lens came out of the rigging and fell a few feet to the ground (only a few inches of snow, unfortunately).

My new rigging uses a clip that must be actuated to release the lens, so I don't have to worry about dropping my lens anymore (I'm using a quickdraw, a pair of professional grade climbing carabiners attached to each other with some webbing, and one clip thoroughly attached to the webbing on the shoulder strap. I tied a good loop of paracord to the lens-plate for the other end).
The focusing system seems fine, if there are any problems it's too minor for an f5.6 lens to care, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and seen further consequences later on. Or if they have an estimate for how much it cost to fix.

The other half of the point of this post is just to re-iterate that Murphy is real, and he is out to get you.

Problem with MK3 new 1.2.3 firmware

I installed the new firmware the other day because I was having problems where the 600 rt on camera flash would misfire on occasion even though it was fully recycled. I just shot a job last night and to my dismay....the camera did about 4 or 5 full manual dumps throughout the night even though I was using ettl....this could really cause the loss of important shots...anyone else experienced this?

jrista et al, Why Astrophotography?

Nothing I say here is meant to be critical or disapproving, it is an honest inquiry in an attempt to understand the appeal of this type of photography. :)

I seem to be motivated primarily by a desire to capture scenes that are in some way unique or especially attractive, at least to me, and prefer that they be something real, as nearly as possible representing what was seen. By this I mean as a "standard human being" might happily experience some personal discovery of natural beauty. The image hopefully allowing an after-the-event reasonable facsimile sharing with others who were not present to hear "Wow, look at that!".

Here is my (very)limited understanding of astrophotography;

One sets up an unusually specialized and expensive amount of gear (scope, camera, filters, cooled sensor, tracker, etc.) …then goes through a usually quite complicated post-process (stacking, etc), and, if successful, ends up with an image which is practically identical with thousands of other photos of the same subject, taken from the same distance, with the same perspective, and in "enhanced"colors which vary according to the processor's taste, and may be nothing at all like the view of the subject which a space ship passenger might see with his own eyes, if close enough.

If this is a roughly correct description of what is going on, it seems that only the basic form/density(ies) of the subject is actually captured, with the rest of the visual impression being more or less filter-effect digital artwork.

Add to these thoughts the fact that most all of the popular targets have "been done" in a practically un-matchable manner by Hubble, and I, personally, am left with a sort of "What's the point?" feeling.

I can understand the satisfaction of meeting the technical challenge of doing it oneself, …but beyond this, I am puzzled by the appeal vs. effort vs result factors.

More power to those who enjoy this type of photography (I agree that the results can be quite beautiful, taken at face value), but If comments are possible without ruffled feathers, i would appreciate some educating, …as i seem to be missing a gene re something that for many seems to be quite a passion.

Happy to have my vision broadened, and any errors above corrected. ???

Thanks!

  • Poll Poll
Poll: How good do you think the Sigma 50 F/1.4 Art will be?

How good will the Sigma 50 F/1.4 Art be performance-wise?

  • Stellar: As good / very nearly as good as the Zeiss Otus

    Votes: 3 12.0%
  • Excellent: Better than any Canon 50mm offering, but not as good as the Zeiss Otus

    Votes: 14 56.0%
  • Very Good: On par with the Canon 50mm F/1.2L

    Votes: 6 24.0%
  • Good: On par with the Canon 50mm F/1.4

    Votes: 2 8.0%
  • Average: On par with the Canon 50mm F/1.8

    Votes: 0 0.0%

Odd ranking categories to be fair, but they were the best I could run out quickly. Given the hype & Sigma's recent track record, I've not offered the possibility that the lens is a dud.

Take 'performance' to mean whatever you choose. I realize that comparing AF and MF lenses together is impossible given that some folks *must* have AF, but indulge me.

Curious to see how this comes out. Thanks for voting.

Anyone buy the 24-70mm in the last month?

I want to get this lens but their QC department is really preventing me from biting the bullet since getitng burned last December.

I was wondering if anyone have gotten a copy in the last month from Amazon or B&H and had any issues? Just a refresh, most common problem was the clicking issue. But when I got (3 in total) my copies in December/January, it not only had clicking issue on the zoom ring but on one copy the focus ring wasnt smooth.

Really want to pick this lens up while its still the double dip rebate.

How Would You Edit This Bracketed Landscape?

Follow this link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ib7a1n2lbotccdg/0bkSoLCrcy to download a bracketed series of a Maui sunset I took this past June. The image itself is not incredible, but I am curious to see different techniques for editing. I did this once before with a picture from Death Valley, but this is a bracketed series.

Feel free to download the files and edit the picture as you normally would. I would say to just use what is actually in the image already, although if you want to replace the sky, go for it--I'd be curious to know how that is done. Also, it would be great if you could post what program(s) and techniques you use to achieve the final result. You can do an HDR if you want or just use one image.

Also, the files are on Dropbox. You don't need Dropbox to download the files, but if you don't have it and want to get it for cloud storage, you can use this link: https://db.tt/oBwlTLd2 to do so. We would both get an extra 500mb of storage if you use that link. No need to do so if you don't want Dropbox though, just thought I would put it out there.

Grizzly Bears

Here are some Grizzly Bear shots from Grand Teton National Park. A couple of well known Grizzlies and their offspring are frequent to locals and visitors in the park. They are Grizzly #399 and #610. Last year around the end of April Grizzly #610 (offspring of #399) sent her trio of three year old cubs on their way.

I was fortunate enough to get some shots of them still together mid April 2013 at Oxbow Bend on the partially frozen Snake River. It wont be long until they are out of hibernation this spring, I know that #399 has three cubs of her own (as of last October) when I last saw her in a heavy snowfall around Shadow Mountain. Cant wait!
