AFMA values beyond -20

Hi,
I have bought a used 5D3 last month and recently the Tamron 24-70 f/2,8 VC (also used). I just did AFMA for this lens (as I did with my other lenses before) and even with the value set to -20, it's just not enough. It should be about -22 for Wide and about -26 for Tele (these are educated guesses). What can I do?
Notes:
-I performed a more or less "real life" test at f/4 and it's perfectly ok. Same test at f/2,8 and it seems quite ok.
-I do the following to determine the AFMA values: Tripod, detailed flat object (ie newspaper), camera and object aligned. I defocus manually, and autofocus; then I check the focus using liveview and adjust manually when necessary; I repeat this about 3 times using the middle focus point first and another 3 times for two outer focus points (both left and right). I always defocus first.
-I got very consistent results with my other lenses on this and previous bodies. So I'm confident I do not need FoCal or other packages. It's just this Tamron, which seems too off for calibration but turns out to be ok in real life...

Needed Varible ND Suggestions For 7d EFS 17-55mm Lens

Hi, I'm looking for suggestions for a varible ND filter for my 7D EFS 17-55mm lens. Wanting to shoot video on the high end towards the f/2.8 range of this lens. Currently, my sweet spot without a ND is anywhere from f/14 to f/18 bright/cloudy outdoors. I normally shoot at 1920x1080 at 24fps with my shutter speed at 1/50. As you know, the higher the aperture the brighter things get. At f/2.8 I'm totally washed out. I have a B+W UV XS-Pro filter that currently lives on the lens https://www.schneideroptics.com/Ecommerce/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?CID=1554&IID=8160

I see Light Craft Workshop has come out with a Rapid Variable ND lately that looks interesting. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=1015993&Q=&is=REG&A=details

If you have any suggestions that would give me great results, I would sincerely appreciate it. Thanks, Ray

Hotshoe has stopped working?

I have been using my 6D with Excalibur flash unit for months, and suddenly it has stopped working with my camera. I can't figure out what is wrong. The flash is firing if I press the test button on the flash cord, but it's no longer speaking to my camera, so doesn't fire when I press the shutter. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's something strange I've done with my settings, although I haven't touched them much lately. I feel like i must have done something! The camera otherwise is working fine. Can anyone shed light on this (pun intended)? I am new to using flash at all, so please bear with me!

In need of a "walk around" camera

My wife and I travel on a regular basis and, of course, photography is an important part of our excursions. At this time I am using a 1D-X, which I absolutely love, but there are times when the weight, appearance and size of this camera make it impractical and/or unsafe to carry. For those reasons I am looking for another camera or body that would be more practical to take when the 1D-X would not be appropriate.

Image quality is a major consideration.

I sure would appreciate some suggestions on what might be an acceptable addition to my travel equipment.

Whitebalance with grey card seems red?

Hello folks,

I recently set my white balance using a new grey card. After that all my pictures seem to have a red tint to them.
I'm using a Canon 600D with Elinchrom flash units and a Mennon grey card.
Before using the grey card i just used a piece of paper for setting white ballance. Seems like i get pretty much identical results with paper and the grey card. - When using the paper I manually added blue in the camera settings to compensate for the red tint. - looks like I have to do the same when using the grey card (somehow makes sense ;) )
When I open the files with the grey card in it and hold my eyedropper on it in photoshop, the color in the card is perfect grey (identical RGB values) - but everything looks reddish???
Just calibrated my screen with no improvement.
Same result on 3 different cameras and different monitors.
Any ideas? Does the background have a red tint or is the balance off?

What Happened to the Photography Industry in 2013?

HTML:
<div name="googleone_share_1" style="position:relative;z-index:5;float: right; /*margin: 70px 0 0 0;*/ top:70px; right:120px; width:0;"><g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/03/what-happened-to-the-photography-industry-in-2013/"></g:plusone></div><div style="float: right; margin:0 0 70px 70px;"><a href="https://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-url="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/03/what-happened-to-the-photography-industry-in-2013/">Tweet</a></div>
<p><a href="http://www.lensvid.com" target="_blank">LensVid</a> has posted an excellent infographic showing how truly bad 2013 was for the camera industry. At its worst, there was a 40% drop in total camera sales between 2012 and 2013. That included a 19% drop in DSLR shipments.</p>
<p>A few points are brought up about why the numbers were less than stellar in 2013. The first being the use of smartphones over compact cameras, we’re beating a dead horse with that one. The second reason being the economic stability of the planet, we’re still not totally out of the woods in a lot of places around the globe. The third, and the most interesting is North America’s aversion to the mirrorless market. Until people in the United States show they’re willing to spend on these systems, I don’t think we’ll see a huge advancement in technology or products. It’s a chicken and the egg thing, people keep saying make something worth buying, but every company is watching their R&D dollar and DSLR’s and lenses are still a safer bet for a return.</p>

Review: Tamron 150-600 f/5-6.3 Di VC USD

<p>Bryan over at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD supertelephoto zoom lens. I do not recall another lens by Tamron receiving so many reviews and so quickly. Like the previous reviews, this one gives the Tamron a very good score, but also outlines a few of its weaknesses.</p>
<p>As we’ve mentioned before, the price will make this lens extremely attractive to a lot of photographers out there.</p>
<p><strong>Says Bryan

</strong><em>“This highly anticipated lens has been a very fun lens to evaluate. While autofocus performance and over-500mm image quality get my vote for this lens’ weaknesses, the Tamron 150-600 still has a great deal going for it. The Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens is defined by attractive image quality over a great focal length range with a relatively compact, light, reasonably well-built design that includes Vibration Control and a very attractive price.”<strong>

General purpose zoom for family vacation of 12

I am only posting this because i am bringing my 5d3 and coild bring my 24-70 2.8 ii but have been considering the 24-70 f4l is since i can get one for about $860 and also considering the canon 24-105. For me the thought process was if i can shoot at a lower shutter speed on some of the indoor shots because of the iS then
I could use less flash output for faster recycle times and a lower iso. Also it would be smaller and lighter since some of the trip is a cruise. But when testing it seems that my 24-70 is drastically sharper. Amy i crazy? Has anyone here done a comparision with this? Basucally just trying to see if this lens will help or if I should stay with the 2.8. Ohh the trip is a disney cruise followed by 7 days in the parks.

Headed on safari, need some advice

Heading on safari in October.

I currently have a 60d a 100-400, 15-85, 28-135 and nifty fifty. I will be purchasing a canon 70-200f2.8 mkii in the next two weeks after borrowing a friend's mki.

On to my question, every site recommends 2 or 3 bodies so I'm deciding what to do. I'd like to keep it in the $2500 or less range. Below are my thoughts

1) wait for the 7dmkii (thinking about $2000) use the 70-200mkii on that and the 100-400 on the 60d, sony rx100 if something comes right next to the jeep

2) Refurbed 5dmkiii (slightly over $2550 through the canon loyalty program) use the 70-200mkii on that and the 100-400 on the 60d, see above notes about rx100

3) 6d through canon loyalty or used for ~$1400 with the 70-200, 70d (1000-1100 depending on sale) with the 100-400, and the 60d with my 15-85

Appreciate feedback (I know the 15-85 is efs)

Glass is the most important?

I am a geek. I have a PhD in biophysics, and built my first computer at 13 in the early 90's (yes yes i'm 'young' too). I love gear and i love the technical aspect of photography. i like charts, graphs and statistical significant repetitions. I am a gear junkie and i am going to go cold turkey!

There are many MANY lenses i want. There are many lenses I can mental justify that i need. There are maybe a couple of lenses i genuinely need (ok, i'm good at convincing myself)! But in 2014 I am aiming to have a kit free year. Baring disaster, I am not going to buy any new kit, lenses, bodies, anything (well maybe film if it should arise).

I have just up-graded my laptop and updated my LR catalogue to include all my old photos... I obviously perused my old shots, sauntering down memory lane and i realised that there are some really good ones. Granted not the ones i thought were good at the time, but still. These were taken with a basic DSLR kit.

I am a gear-head and i believe glass is more important than the body. But I also believe the picture is most important of all!

So, I am putting my efforts into creating new photographic importunities over new gear.

A pint to the person who can correctly guess what week of the year i fold!

Now where did i put my drink....

Thoughts on repurposing a guinea pig cage as an slr cage?

I coach softball and I'd like to be able to tape games & practice and then send clips to the girls and tell them to do better.

But I was concerned about leaving my body and lens exposed to foul balls.

Our guinea pig just died so I was thumping about using his 3'x2'x2' cave to house my camera.

I would get a bendy tripod and attach it to the base of the cage. Attach the camera, hit record, attach the top of the cage and done.

Am I missing anything here?

On the spot flexible recording settings

Hi,

I do b-roll and interviews for a videographer, and i'm fine shooting when i have time to set-up etc... but i find when i am doing some wildlife photography i sometimes want to film and in the spur of the moment i have missed a lot of what could have been great footage.

I am putting my C3 setting on my 5d iii to a dedicated 'emergency filimg' mode. Any advice would be welcome, but at the moment it is:
Manual mode
Auto ISO (100-12800)
1/50
f/8
1920 25p, ALL I
Neutral picture (everything on 0)

considering i will be shooting with telephoto, i can not expect the sound anyway.

does anyone else have a similar mode? thoughts, comments, improvements, suggestions?

thanks, i'm off shooting tigers again this weekend, and would like to actually get some footage as well as photos! :)

Eos 6D & GPS is just Great!

When I bought my 6D towards the end of last year I thought the build in GPS feature was just another gimmick. But after activating it and seeing all the info now just one click away in Lightroom4, I actually regard it as a 'must have' for any travel photographer. I recently traveled to Cape Town and also Plettenberg Bay on the Garden route. I can now go back and precisely see where each photograph was made and things like streets & towns and minor roads are now easy to identify. My wife is now also spared her tedious travelling duties of jotting down in my notebook each and every location, plus a description, of where I stopped and photographed!

Shown here an owl that we spotted in atree just outside our restaurant on Thesen Island in the Knysna Lagoon and the exact position where I stood, clearly shown on the map.

More of my Garden route photographs and a short review of the GPS function can be seen here at:

6D does the Garden Route of South Africa

My wife and I spend a weekend in Plettenberg Bay on The Garden Route. At least one can swim in the sea here as opposed to Cape town where the water is bitterly cold! The landscapes are just as dramatic as Cape town but it was out of season and the large crowds, now a permanent feature of Cape Town, are thankfully absent here in the Garden route.

More of my images and a review of the GPS function of the Eos 6D can be seen here at :
