<p>Sigma is boasting that their new 50mm lens will rival the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 for a fraction of the cost optically, and it’ll have autofocus to boot! Here’s hoping the claim is  true. Judging by this very small sampling of image quality, it’s quite possible it will be.</p>

UPDATE: EOS M2 Not Coming to North America

<p><strong>*UPDATE*

</strong>Imaging Resource received information from Canon USA after the story went to press stating the following:</p>
<p><em>“We received an update after we went to press that Canon USA does not have plans to sell the EOS M2 at this time. We’ll let you guys know if this changes!”</em></p>
<p><strong>Original Story</strong>

Imaging Resource did an interview with Canon executive Mr. Go Tokura and they touched on the EOS M2 and its availability worldwide.</p>
<p>When asked if the EOS M2 would come to the USA, Mr Tokura stated “There are plans for the M2 to arrive in the U.S.”. We’re assuming this also means there are plans to bring it to Europe.</p>
<p>Canon also plans to release more lenses for the EOS M system, as Mr Tokura says “I can assure you that we do have plans to roll out some lenses in the future. As far as speaking concretely about a roadmap, I’m afraid that based on our company policy, we can’t make any concrete statements about that.”</p>
<p>We’d be told previously that the original EOS M’s very high stock levels at North American and European retailers played a big roll in the M2 not coming to these markets. Once those stocks are depleted, I imagine we’ll see the arrival of the M2, or possibly an M3.</p>

Canon fanboy considering switching to Nikon

Canon has ALWAYS been inferior to Nikon in terms of sensor quality. especially DR (I have seen at least 3 professional lab tests including the famous DXO). Why do so many pros (more than 50% in a recent poll) own Canon bodies?

If Canon does not release a new camera with better DR, I'll switch to Nikon forever.

Hardware Hack for EOS Cameras Coming Soon? [CR1]

HTML:
<div name="googleone_share_1" style="position:relative;z-index:5;float: right; /*margin: 70px 0 0 0;*/ top:70px; right:120px; width:0;"><g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/02/hardware-hack-for-eos-cameras-coming-soon-cr1/"></g:plusone></div><div style="float: right; margin:0 0 70px 70px;"><a href="https://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-url="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/02/hardware-hack-for-eos-cameras-coming-soon-cr1/">Tweet</a></div>
<p>We received an email stating that a certain company is getting ready to announce a hardware hack for Canon EOS cameras. Only the EOS 5D Mark III was listed, but other EOS cameras are likely.</p>
<p>The hack requires the mainboard inside the camera gets replaced with the modified custom board. It was not mentioned how, or where you’d send your camera to get the modification. I’d think they’d have to give away a few modified cameras to get the trust of the consumer. The reported cost of the mod is $1000 USD.</p>
<p>As for the modification itself, it’s said it will “greatly improve dynamic range, video sharpness and performance of the EOS 5D Mark III.”</p>
<p>I’ve heard about these types of things in the past, and nothing has ever come of them. This one seems a bit different, but we’ll have to wait and see.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

Galapagos Underwater - Darwin's Dream - Bronze Award

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to share my latest underwater film - Darwin's Dream. I was lucky enough to have it awarded the bronze award at the Our World Underwater film competition. Galapagos is an amazing destination both below and above the surface. This was shot in only 5 short days of diving. At the end of the film you will see we had a special visitor. It was very exciting. Let me know what you think.
Please feel free to like, share and comment!

EOS 7D Mark II Announcement in Q2 of 2014 [CR1]

<p>We (<a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_7dmk2.html" target="_blank">and others</a>) keep hearing that the EOS 7D Mark II is the next camera body to be announced and we should expect it in Q2 of 2014, which would be April, May or June.</p>
<p>As of yet, there has been no solid specs for the camera outside of it setting a new standard in APS-C performance along with cutting edge video features.</p>
<p>We’re waiting for the usual sources to speak up, which would happen soon if the Q2 announcement rumors are true.</p>

Do you top your pancake with a filter?

Do you use a clear protection filter on your EF 40mm 2.8 pancake?

  • No filter. No hood.

I use clear Hoya HD filters on all my lenses with large front elements like the 24-105 f4 and the 70-200 f2.8 II. I also use hoods on these lenses that help keep things away from the filters.

But, I don't use a filter on the old 35 f2.0, which has a relatively small, deeply seated front element. I've also found that a filter on the old 35 will introduce flare from candles or any small light that reflects off the front element and onto the back side of the filter.

The front element on the 40 isn't as deeply seated and protected as the front element on the 35. Since I use it as a grab shot lens, it can be somewhat at risk. Still, the appeal to this lens is it's size and I don't want to add a filter that might invite contact with stuff since I won't be using a hood. My solution is to use the metal ring from an old rubber lens hood that adds just enough protection to deflect the lens from damaging objects when carrying the camera on my shoulder without a lens cap.

But, I'm curious. Do any of you use a filter on your 40mm pancakes?

6D or 5Dm3?

Hi Everyone :D

Here is my question.
What do i purchase, the 6D or the 5DM3?

I've been using a 7D for the last 2 years and am now ready to go full frame. One of the reasons for this is because i shoot gigs and want to benefit from a lot less noise at high iso's.

My main concerns though are the price difference and the difference in auto focus.

I understand that the 6D is cheaper and has a great centre focus point which is great for low light. My main issue with that though is i dont like to focus and then recompose.

On the 7D with 19 foucs points (all cross-type) i always shoot with one focus point moving around the screen.

If im shooting in portait i usually stick the top point on the performers face. (far right in landscape)

Or sometimes if i want to get the full band in, i would again use one of the side focus points in landscape.

So i know that the 6D doesn't have cross type points on the outside, so would they work well enough in low light?
All anyone seems to talk about and test is the centre point.

I really dont want to upgrade model to then realise i've downgraded in features.

My other question is

I have spent the last 5 years using a Canon ef-s 10-22mm so going full-frame means I lose the ultra wide.
Now I might sound like a complete Biff here but how is this compared to my 24-70mm on a fullframe?
Is the 24mm end as wide as say 15mm on a crop using my 10-22?

Crop factor does confuse me

Anyway thanks for taking a look and if you can understand this waffle, please let me know what you think.

Thanks for looking

Matt

Hello,

having heard of so many issues with Canon's 24-70 f/2.8L II I thought of issuing a poll.

This is the first time I create one so apologies if I have missed something.

I assumed that no one would have more than 1 issue so as to prevent someone from voting both no issues and something else.

Any comments/suggestions are welcome :)

Macbook Pro 2011 Logic Board/GPU failures

I know this is not camera related but I think there would be a lot of CR readers/members who may be using a Mac for post processing. I just want those Mac owners to be aware of this issue.

My 17-inch MBP (2011) just started showing GPU glitches when I use Photoshop or Lightroom. I cannot do anything to it but shutdown wait a few minutes before restarting. The machine would be usable for a few minutes only just enough time for me to get a file so that I can use in another computer. I'm out of warranty so I was getting ready to fix it. While I was searching for logic board repairer I stumbled on a thread from Apple forum https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?start=3375&tstart=0regarding high failure rate on this model of MBP. Another google search and I found this article on MacRumors http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1697394&highlight=2011+macbook+pro

I'm curious if anyone here had the same problem? I know the photography/videography community would probably have a high percentage of Mac power users that would push the GPU/CPU to its limits.

<p>On a side note, I am looking forward to Sigma’s 50mm f/1.4 ART series lens. If the rumors are true, Sigma is gunning for the Zeiss Otus at a fraction of the cost.</p>

<em>“Fifty-something mm lenses are wildly popular and this field has long been crowded. But finding a truly remarkable wide aperture 50-something mm lens was arguably not possible – until now. Genesis by Sebastião Salgado

Since we're talking about $4M photos, art, and all that, I'll share what I think are the most amazing photographs I have seen in terms of "art" - Genesis by Sebastião Salgado. I picked one up last year and I would kill to have his eyes in terms of how he sees and captures the world:
http://www.taschen.com/pages/en/catalogue/photography/all/05767/facts.sebastio_salgado_genesis.htm
(Click on "See all Images (21)" link on the bottom right of the photo to see some examples)

The 9.6"x14" format and printing quality is amazing and to me, this is art - no flying spatulas, boring rivers, or blurry B&W with torn edges.

what lenses have you sold in the past and why?

I see lots of posts re: "what should I buy" but I've never seen any on what people have got rid of, and more importantly why.

Here is what I've sold in the past and why (in order).

Canon 18-135 - was never really impressed with the IQ. Always left me wanting more.

sigma 24-70 2.8 (v2) - AF wildly inconsistent. Bokeh very unattractive (I would call it 'crunchy'). I never really trusted this lens, or liked the photos it took. Sold it for canon 17-40 on a whim, as I needed a gen zoom quickly for a holiday.

canon 17-40 - The IQ, flare control, contrast and AF were all great, however I was never excited by the zoom range on crop, so sold it for 17-55. However I regretted selling it once I bought my 5d3.

canon 2x TC ii - I bought it when it was mis-priced in a local camera shop. However, the IQ was crap so I never used it.

Canon 7d - was a great camera, but after 3 years of (heavy) shooting it started to show signs of wear so I decided to go full frame and replaced it with a 5d3.

Canon 85 1.8 - sold for 85 1.2 ii. However wish I kep the 1.8 aswell as sometimes the f1.2 is just to big/heavy/slow AF to use out and about (althought when it nails it the results are glorious).

canon 50 1.4 - sold for 50L 1.2. Best decision I ever made. Wish I did it 3 years ago. It now lives on my camera.

canon 100mm macro - a lovely lens. However I took it to a humid butterfly farm which killed the aperture blades (they got stuck). I got it fixed by an authorised canon repair centre but it was never the same lens after I got it back. It still worked fine, but the AF was so slow after. So sold it, on the cheap :(, and replaced it with the 100L

canon 17-55 - just sold it as I upgraded to full frame and no longer really use my 60d (I keep my 60d for backup purposes and when I go to the zoo). Plus to be honest, I've never really been impressed by wide open IQ or contrast. Given my shooting style (run and gun) I don't really have the need for IS and I prefer shooting at wider apertures than f2.8.

sigma 10-20 - A wonderful lens. Never had any complaints, however I no longer use it because I upgraded to full frame. so gonna purchase a FF equivelent like the sigma 12-24 or canon 16-35.

<p><strong>EOS-1D X Replacement?

</strong>Not this year, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see an EOS-1D C replacement. I think the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/827036-REG/Canon_5253B002_EOS_1D_X_EOS_Digital.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">EOS-1D X</a> is still a world class capable body and Canon should be in no rush to replace it. Most people I talk to don’t want incremental updates, such as the perception with D4 to the D4S (again, image quality may change that opinion). The EOS-1D X should remain current well into 2015.</p>

General purpose zoom for honeymoon

I'm heading on my honeymoon in April to Mauritius for 2 weeks.

At home, I shoot 5d mk iii and generally with primes (24L, 35, 50L, 85L, 100L macro and soon to have 135L).

I'm thinking of not taking any of those and just buying a general purpose zoom so that:

a) Im carrying less stuff (so my new wife doesn't kill me for taking so much stuff), and
b) I can focus on enjoying my honeymoon and taking snaps rather than worrying about having the right lens on (so my new wife doesn't kill me for taking so much stuff).

I could just take the 24, 50 and 135 + an extension ring and that would cover most scenarios. However on a general walk about I'd still be carrying 3 lenses.

I'm sure this has been covered before (somewhere) but I think my options are:

The canon 24-70 ii feels too expensive to justify.
The canon 24-70 f4 doesn't feel exciting enough (70mm @ f4) to warrant £1000.
The canon 24-105 f4 could be a reliable choice but its dated and I worry about sharpness and sample variation.
I like the look / idea of the tamron, but the stories I hear about AF inconcistency (not MFA) worry me.

So I'm kind of leaning towards the sigma 24-105 f4. But I've owned the old sigma 24-70 f2.8 in the past and found the AF to be unreliable and the bokeh to be unattractive. But I could save a bit of cash and buy a used canon 24-105 f4.

But does anyone have any good opinion (or bad opinions) of the sigma 24-105? and/or any decent and definative review sites? and/or does anyone have an opinion on whether the canon 24-105 would be a better bet?

And/or any other suggestions that I haven't considered?

Your time is always appreciated.
Thanks all
Alex
