EOS utility for remote shooting - anyone getting good at it.

Perhaps this only pertains 6D and 70D users but I'd like to see some discussion on using EOS remote. There is considerable potential especially for shooting birds or animals that don't like a human nearby. From my digging the documentation seems minimal and I'm learning by trial and error.

I have the app on my desktop computer and today installed it on an android phone. They seem fairly different with the phone having fewer features - it seems to me.

So, I'd love to hear advice and hints on using it.

Today, shot from my desktop about 25 feet from the camera which was on the deck about 6 feet from the Downy. -20 C or -4 F made this pretty appealing today!

All Canon TS lenses

Apart from

TS-E 17/4
TS-E 24/3.5L
TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II
TS-E 45mm f/2.8
TS-E 90mm /2.8

are there any more TS lenses from Canon? Are all of these optically great, or are there differences? How do they compare with third-party lenses? There isn't a huge difference in prices compared with third-party lenses, but is there a huge difference in quality either way? I know this is a CANON forum, but I'm hoping for a neutral opinion!

wide andgle lens for a 60d

So, I am relatively new to photography, but not quite a beginner. I have a canon 60d with a 18-135 and a 70-300 lens, I am wanting to buy a wide angle and money isn't an issue, I've been, thinking about the 16-35 since they are supposed to work well with full fram censors and I'm planning on upgrading to a 5D mark III in about a 2 years, but would I be better off with a differeant lens for my 60d. Thanks.

Floating Optical System: what is it?

Hello everyone,

I've noticed that several lenses, especially macro lenses, are said to possess "floating optical systems" in their design. I have read before that this is related in some way to maintaining the lenses optical quality over the entire range from minimum focusing distance to infinity, but I am unclear what exactly such a design is. How does a floating optical system differ from a non-floating optical system? And how does such a design improve the optical quality over the focus range of the lens? Can anyone explain this to me, or point me in the right direction to finding out?

Thanks in advance!

70D sd card slot obstruction

Hi Canonites!
I have the Canon 70D since it was released last sept 2013. I have enjoyed it greatly and have put approx 8,500 on the camera to date. But over the last month or so I have started to notice a issue in the SD card slot where there appears to be a slight obstruction (metal housing sticking out more sometimes not allowing you to insert the SD card properly. I have the Canon warranty plus extended one from Big box store. Just wondering anyone else having a issue or notice the metal in the slot?? ANY OTHER NOTED PROBLEMS WITH THE 70d i NEED TO LOOK FOR? Ive called canon and no reported issues from engineering.

Repair or replace 7D

Hello Folks,

My 7D broke recently, symptom was, all of sudden camera hangs and only way to make it work is to take out the battery and reinsert. Gave it in Canon service center for checkup. They said the mother board and one more item(dont remember exactly what was it) are gone bad. The parts together would cost around 500$. Now I am confused whether to repair or buy a new one.
I shoot macros and closeups predominantly and photography is a pure hobby. I shoot Very few land scape and portraits. 90% of the time canon 100mm 2.8 L is on the body, remaining 10% tamron 17-50 2.8VC.

If I go for repair, I am not sure problem will be fixed permanently. But will save lots of money :).
If replacement, should I wait for 7DMKII or 6D or even go for 70D? I do not want to shell out more money for 5DMKIII.

What you all suggest?
Thanks for all your help

Bryan over at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the ST-E3-RT remote for Canon’s 600EX-RT flash system.

From his review:

“If you are a professional or serious amateur photographer and have the ability to choose the Canon’s radio wireless system for your uses, the decision to get one or more ST-E3-RT remote transmitters makes a lot of sense.”

Our reviewer, Justin, didn’t weigh in on the ST-E3-RT but did have high praise for Canon’s 600EX-RT system in our review. RRS tvc-34l sturdy enough for 600mm or Gitzo Systematic Series 4

Hi.

Earlier I started a thread about what gear is needed when using a 600mm and it starts to come clear what to purchase. If all plans will go my way I will get my 600mm tonight so now I really want to buy a tripod quick as ...... =)

I have never even seen an RRS tripod in real life but heard so many good things about them and MANY prefer them instead of Gitzo.

First I had the Gitzo Systematic Series 3 GT3542XLS in mind but after playing around with it a couple of minutes I don´t think it´s as sturdy as I want. I then compared to the Gitzo Systematic Series 4 and that one was so much better.

So the choice is between the RRS TVC-34L or the Gitzo Systematic Series 4 GT4542LS.
The RRS looks to have all the advantages when it comes to size and weight but do you think it will be solid and sturdy enough? I really did not like the feeling of the Gitzo GT3542XLS so I hope the RRS is better than so.

Thanks in advance.

I know, there's a few (or more) posts about 60D vs 7D already. But I'd really appreciate input on my specific needs. If you're already fed-up with this kind of threads, kindly move on or only just vote in the poll. Otherwise, I'd really appreciate a post. Short, long, extremely long and detailed - whatever suits you best. Thank you in advance.

So I used to have a Canon EOS 350D years ago, and a 550D since shortly after its release. Now I feel I need an upgrade as I have advanced to a decent level, but can't quite decide between the 6D and 70D. Both seem to lack usable features of the other but maybe I'm judging "what's right for my needs" wrong. Or how much the single differences matter in actual usage.

So, here's a list of things I shoot frequently:
 • Landscapes
 • Long time exposures at nightfall / night
 • Temples / Shrines / other interesting buildings (no, I don't have or want shiftable lenses)
 • Flowers / insects / small animals (close-up and macro)
 • Portraits and Cosplay (from close-ups to groups)

Things that might be worth mentioning as they might have an impact on the discussion:
 • I only ever take pictures outdoors. Indoor might become an option in the future, but I wouldn't like to take this into consideration as it's no priority at all..
 • I usually just use the available light (no flashes, etc.) and I don't need a built-in flash for sure (in those rare situations where I do use a flash, I require a "big" one)
 • I often take the camera to hiking or longer city trips, so weight and size do matter some. Also, I do GPS-tag my pictures.
 • I currently own only one EF-S lens, all the others are EF ones and I wouldn't mind not being able to use the EF-S anymore
 • I already got read of my older DSLR, i.e. they will not act as "you can still use them in whatever scenario" cameras
 • I don't care taking pictures of moving things (no sports, kids, animals)
 • I don't make videos and I don't need continuous shooting
 • I'm (obviously?) only a hobbyist and don't make nor plan to make any money from it so I'm not ruining somebody's wedding by having the wrong gear

For those interested (for judgment of my needs or otherwise), you can find my best-shots-only-gallery at http://www.sandro-mathys.ch/ - it's currently three pages (the last one nearly empty), so shouldn't take too much time to scroll through and it gives a really good overview of what I use the camera for.

Will I jump ship to " Sony Alphe a7R " for 36 MP camera ?

Dear Friends and Teachers.
I have read " Fred Miranda has completed his review of the Sony A7R camera body using Canon EF lenses.
Read the full review | Sony A7R at B&H Photo" from front page of CR., and start to hit center of my heart that Why Canon not do like this too, Yes, I am waiting for Canon 3D= 36 + MP, or Canon 1DS MK IV = 36 + MP for many years already, BUT Canon do nothing like this. Yes, I check the Price of Sony Alpha a7R at B&H = $ 2,298 US Dollars + Canon EF Lens adapter = $ 350 US Dollars = Total $ 2,648 US Dollars = Super Cheap compare to Canon Top Line 1DX MK I.
Yes, Sir, My stupid question ( I have GAS./ Gear Acqisittion Syndrome Illness NOW) is= I should wait another 6-9 months to get the Canon 36 MP. or Jump the ship to buy Sony Alpha a7R now ???.

YES, Sir, The More I use Canon EOS-M past 3 weeks, The More I love the Size of Tiny EOS-M, and the quality of the photos of this tiny camera.---And Sony Alpha a7R ( have eye AF control like my Old Canon A2E too) is a lot smaller than Canon 1Dx too.
Thanks for your answer, Sir.

DxO labs has tested and reviewed the Canon EOS 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS.

From their review:

“Without doubt this lens is a popular model and it’s not difficult to see why. It has pretty good image quality throughout the range.”

Their own title to the review really sums it up “Still a good all-round choice.” It’s not a glowing review, but this has been a strong staple lens for pro photographers for many years. While an updated lens is certainly on the horizon, there is a lot of value left in this quality lens considering the pricier first-party alternatives. Of course, there are some choice third party lenses on the market too.

An excerpt on digital cameras:

“Within the Imaging System Business Unit, interchangeable-lens digital cameras maintained their top market share despite the challenging environment, which was marked by a drop in demand in Europe and China due to the economic downturn, although demand in Japan continued to expand. In particular, the EOS 5D Mark III and 70D advanced-amateur-model digital SLR cameras continued to realize healthy growth. Furthermore, in Japan, the new entry-level EOS Digital Rebel SL1 and T5i cameras proved popular. As for digital compact cameras, although total sales volume declined due to the market slowdown and the increasing popularity of smartphones, sales volume increased from the previous year for high-added-value models incorporating features that differentiate them from smartphones, such as large-size image sensors and models like the PowerShot SX50 HS and SX510 HS, which feature high-magnification zoom lenses.”

Benefits of a 600RT system ...

Hi,

I am pleased with the Elinchroms I recently bought but am not interested in buying a battery to use them outdoors. I'm looking to invest in a speedlight system where I don't need to upgrade anything other than probably add the odd speedlight in future.

People sing praises of the 600RT system. Can you please provide me with a link to a resource which explains the usage and the benefits of this system detail. Any other advise is most welcome.

Thanks in advance ... J.R.

Edit: I do have a 430EX II and have funds to get 600 EX x 2 at the moment.
