2013 photo safari to Southern Africa by Old Age Adventurers

My wife & I returned in December 2013 from another of our annual solo photographic safaris around Southern Africa. This trip of over 4 months & 20,000Km in our Landcruiser 76 station wagon with roof top tent took us to Kruger, Hwange, Chobe, Bambwata, Etosha & Kgalagadi National Parks. We have over the last weeks been editing & selecting photos for competitions & addition to the portfolio on our website. As January 2014 flashes by the first 50 photographs (Kruger & Hwange) have now been posted in the gallery "2013 photographic safari" in our portfolio in www.africaraw.com.

I will over the weeks wade thru the many picture & post the ones I think are interesting. Constructive criticism will as always be most welcome

DxO labs has tested and reviewed the Canon EOS 17-40 f/4L.

From their review:

“Due to its more glamorous sibling this modest lens is often overlooked though it’s well known for its high-performance by Canon users. As a small, light, highly portable zoom it would make a great choice for travel, landscapes and general-purpose photography.”

Our own review by Justin echo’d this feeling. Justin has owned and used this lens from his very first day shooting, and it’s a completely viable alternative to the Canon 16-35 f/2.8 L if you can spare the extra stops of light. You can read our review here, and check out DxO’s full review here their lens comparison tool is an excellent resource if you’re into sharpness charts.

Sochi Toilet photo goes viral

This photo apparently has gone viral on the internet ... apparently this is not a fake photo but a real toilet with twin commodes to take your dump ... very strange :o ... I wasn't sure on which section I should post this ... so after much deliberation, I settled for "Street & City" section ;D

Samyang announces filter holder for the 14mm f/2.8 lens

I have been contemplating this lens for a while, especially after reading Dustin Abbott's review. The only issue was lack of filters other than the uber-expensive Lee 150 adapter system.
It seems that Samyang has developed something themselves. While not ideal for me, since I have already invested in the Lee 4x6 system, it might be a nice thing for a lot of landscape photographers. However, few might want to go for the Cokin filters designed to go with this, but hopefully the Lee 150 filters will work somehow.

Canon and Nikon - Past Their Prime? by Kai Wong

This is an interesting article that Kai Wong (the Chinese dude who speaks in English accent on DigitalrevTV youtube channel) ... this is only meant as an interesting read, not to bash Canon or Nikon ... disagreements are welcome, but kindly refrain from hate posts please. Thanks

As published in http://www.digitalrev.com/article/canon-and-nikon-past-their/MTc3MzU1MDAz

Fancy dress parties are hateful. It's not the taking part that irks me, it's the having to see other people take so much pleasure from lazily dressing-up in attire that adheres to a stereotype of what it's supposed to represent. It makes me feel a little sad for the people who go to those 1970s disco nights wearing an off-the-shelf kit consisting of: big 'fro, shiny flares, big collars and big sunglasses. It makes you wish the 70s was an object just so that you could punch it in anger, but the fact of the matter is that the 70s was actually pretty cool. Kind of.

That brings me neatly to Nikon's fancy dress disaster: the Df. What a shambles. In a nutshell, it's a D610, with a Nikon FM - a classic SLR from the 70s - costume on and not a very good one at that. Nikon designed the Df to be a cool blend of digital sensibilities fused with a nostalgic nod to the charming classic minimalism of a film camera that was once used by the masses decades ago. The trouble with the execution, however, is that it has ended up being not so much a tribute to the FM as it is a parody. If you wanted to satisfy your nostalgic desires or wanted a DSLR that works like a fully manual SLR then you'll be severely disappointed with the Df.

Outside of the pro market, I sometimes wonder if Nikon is getting a bit fuddy-duddy. Canon too. Nikon and Canon are having a bit of an identity crisis (or is that mid-life crisis?). They can both produce pro-grade products well, with higher end DSLRs that continue to sell well. So well that they don’t want to make any of their lower end stuff anywhere near as good for fear of harming the sales of the top end stuff. They're also incredibly cautious when it comes to their entry into the mirrorless camera market. Although they are aware that mirrorless is a threat to entry-level DSLR sales, they have no choice but to enter this segment but while still trying to get people to buy their DSLRs. Canon, like Nikon, still don’t seem to get it either.

The Canon EOS M2 was announced recently, which is more or less the same camera as the EOS M albeit with wifi and faster autofocus speed. But, frankly, you couldn’t have gotten any slower than the autofocus speed of the EOS M, so the only way was up. Not that this product announcement is really relevant anyway as it seems like Canon will be keeping this camera as an Asia-only release, if reports on the net are to be believed. No crying shame there mind you, as the EOS M2 is about as tantalising as a used bar of soap (the EOS M2 is seemingly designed to look like one too).

When Canon and Nikon try to be cool and different the result is somewhat lame. It’s like listening to an Uncle try to drop some words he found on urban dictionary into a conversation - it’s embarrassing. Although they seem to understand that there is a market for people who like mirrorless cameras or stylish cameras, their efforts lack substance. It feels like they think that it’s enough to produce something that is all about the superficial qualities and without any real depth to the product. Sony is quite the opposite: they have made some interesting products recently - a7 & a7R, RX1, QX10 - with cool tech albeit encased in something as bland looking as one of their TV remotes. The game is changing, and props must go to Sony for realising that life outside of DSLRs isn’t just a load of fancy dress.

Extreme Macro shots with stacked lenses

Last fall I came across some super amazing macro shots of snowflakes up close. I instantly fell in love with the concept and started working on learning how to do it myself. With a reverse stacked lens, your magnification is a divisor of the front lens and the reverse stacked lens. So, for higher magnification you want a larger lens connected to the camera and a smaller lens reverse stacked on the front.

I'm using a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, a 1.4x III extender, a reverse lens adapter ring and a Nikon 24mm f/2 AIS lens. This gives me a magnification of 280 / 24 = 11.66x! For light, I'm using a 580EX Speedlight connected via an ETTL cable so I can position it however I need to. This combination is really dark to see to focus, so sometimes I'll turn up my cell phone brightness. I'm really just getting started, my first few photos were done hand-held, trying to position my cell phone light and the flash while hand holding the camera and moving in or out to focus. This is the method I used last night when we got a little bit of snow and ice in NC. I got these shots from the top of our garbage can:

Yosemite Winter Sunset (.CR2 + TIFF)

I just got back from Yosemite weekend during a landscape photography community meetup thing in SF. Last winter I was there and there was quite a bit of snow on the ground, this year... not so much! In fact days were t-shirt and sandal weather, nights were just about freezing but not quite.

Just a bit of snow on the east side of the park (shadow side), while the west side of the park was pretty dry and sunny all day (waterfall side). This viewpoint is the most widely photographed location in the park as many of the great photographers would benchmark their work against this classic composition.

I've had my 6-stop B+W filter stuck on the end of my 77mm adapter ring for GNDs, so all my exposures are pretty far out on exposure times, which I've found to blend twilight and sunset colors together for a truly impressive color gradient. ISO 50 F22 at 3:30 is usually where I start at the beginning of sundown, and add 30 second intervals thereafter, up to 4 minutes at around minute 10 after sundown. Then it's time to move to a 3-stop... unless you have a stuck 6-stop.

The download files include the RAW .CR2 file as well as the TIFF16BIT file of the slight adjustments.if you open both and move between them you can see the before and after of very slight adjustment in exposure values - color was pretty well saturated by low ISO number, maybe a little bit too much even on native saturation.

It was about 3 days and some photographers got some really awesome shots! (if you're in SF, check out landscapephotographysf.com)

If you have any questions let me know!

Sensor reflections from eos-m

I've heard that some of the M4/3rd's and Sony Nex(Alpha) suffer from reflections from the sensor. I've had an Eos-M for a couple of months and have seen my first example of it from the M. I'm just wondering if anyone else has come across it, and if it will be a problem across all the short flange digital systems?
Cheers,
Cinto

Patents with three popular telephoto lenses with the addition of image stabilization have shown up. It’s long been expected to see IS added to Canons highly regarded 135 f/2.0, I don’t know where a 2.8 will fit into the lineup, and adding stabilization to the 85 and 100 would follow with Canons current practice of sticking IS on all their mid-range glass.

|RUMOR| EOS A1 Coming Feb 9th

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Canon-EOS-A1-Specs-Leaked-Coming-February-9-419054.shtml

Interesting news...of course with a grain of salt...

"So far, all the info we have on Canon EOS-A1 is that it will be a high-end DSLR and it shouldn't be seen as 7D's successor.

According to a post on Chinese forum Xitek, an anonymous source has revealed a few specs for the upcoming Canon EOS-A1 digital SLR model. It seems that EOS-A1 will be more than a high-end DSLR, and it’s likely that this is the rumored EOS flagship camera meant to challenge Nikon's D4s.

Canon EOS-A1 comes with a 36.8MP image sensor, DIGIC 6 image processor, and Dual Pixel CMOS AF, all packed in a tough magnesium alloy body similar with the EOS-1D X. Moreover, the new EOS-A1 seems to have the same 61-point high-density auto focus system as the aforementioned model.

When it comes to video performance, the new Canon model will be capable of recording 4K video footage at 30 frames per second using an 8-bit 4:2:2 lossless output and Canon's Interframe (IPB) and Intraframe (ALL-I) compression formats.

In addition to that, Canon EOS-A1 seems to have a native ISO sensitivity starting from ISO50. The same source states that the new flagship model comes with a 3.2-inch 1.04-million-dot LCD touch screen and built-in Wi-Fi module.

The Canon EOS-A1 is expected to be announced on February 9 at a price that exceeds $8,000 / €5,900. In comparison, the EOS-1D X body is now available for purchase for $6,799 / €5,000.

By the looks of it, this will be an amazing DSLR, but we suggest you take this with a pinch of salt since it comes from an unknown source. It will be interesting to see whether Nikon's D4s manages to keep up. For the moment, there's no information regarding its specs, but it's expected to have a higher fps rate in burst shooting mode, improved video capabilities, and faster AF (autofocus)."

Hasselblad is going to release a 50-MP CMOS sensor-based medium format camera

It has been mentioned previously that Hasselblad is going to collaborate with Sony, possibly to use new Sony sensors in its medium format cameras. Today British Journal of Photography published a short article, which says that Hasselblad is going to release a CMOS sensor-based medium format camera with "much greater ISO performance". No mentioning of the size of the sensor or other technical characteristics, though.

Short tele for street portraits in Southeast Asia

Looking to for a short tele to use for street portraits/candids in Southeast Asia with my 5D3. I currently have the 70-200 f/2.8 IS and 85 1.2L for tele. I don't plan on bringing either due to size/weight issues or slow focus (85L).

I'm considering:

85 f/1.8
100 f/2
100 f/2.8L Macro
135 f/2L

I'm a little more interested in face shots, which I think would be better suited for 100mm+. The 85 1.8 and 100/f2 win in their size/weight/price. However, I'm less likely to find them use when I return. I can see myself using the 100L for it's Macro capability/IS/sealing or 135L for its size/image quality/bokeh.

No interest in the 70-200 f/4L (either version).

I plan on pairing this with the 40 Pancake and possibly a 24 IS.

Thanks!
