Upgrade for 17-55 2.8

Hi,

I currently use a t2i and have no intentions to move to FF in near future. I'm fine with crops.

What I would like to see is a high quality wide to long zoom to rival the new 24-70 L mark 2 for FF. I guess this would mean a mark 2 for the 17-55. The current version is quite old, and could use an upgrade to something more modern, smaller, better build, and improved IQ to match the look and feel of the new L lenses - and the new fuji / tamron/ micro 4/3 lenses flooding the market.

I'm surprised this seems to be a non issue and nobody else brings this up?

thoughts ?

Making a perfectly sharp lens corner to corner idea

I was thinking that a FF lens used on crop camera is sharper in the corners because it only sees the centre of the lens.
The lens designers could make a lens that has a much larger image circle (maybe 1.5x the size of FF), this would make the lens' corners sharp at full aperture on a FF camera.

The drawbacks that I see would be the size (thickness and weight) of the lens, but ignoring that why is this approach not taken?

Review - Canon EF 85mm f/1.8

Justin has completed our review of the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 lens. The small and much less expensive little brother of the magical (but not perfect) EF 85mm f/1.2L II. I personally love the 85 f/1.8, as it’s light, inexpensive, focuses fast and is optically very good.

Says Justin

“I’ve had a long and difficult time trying to place this lens. I’ve borrowed it, rented it, and used it on and off for almost 3 years. I want to love this lens; I want to tell myself it’s a viable alternative to the 85mm f/1.2L II when that just simply isn’t true. It lacks the magical “feel” of the images that the 85 1.2L II produces. Of course, “Magic” comes at quite a cost. It’s more of a companion lens, something to accompany a tightly controlled prime kit.”

Desert Orb

I got all creative a little while back, and since I've just salvaged my old hard drive I thought I’d post this, there’s a little white line underneath the moon, this was the only star visible due to the light pollution, but it left a little trail due to the long exposure time. Shot was taken on the outskirts of Dubai, ISO 100, f3.5, 30 seconds.

Bracket and boom stand recommendations for 43" octagonal Apollo Orb softbox

Hello, Everyone.

I have a 43-inch octagonal Apollo Orb softbox. I wish to to use two or three Speedlites (no preference, but at least two) and would like to know what recommendations you have regarding brackets to use for mounting the Speedlites in the softbox. I would also welcome suggestions for a suitable boom stand. I am working with 600EX-RT flashes and an ST-E3-RT transmitter. Though the softbox will be used indoors where wind will not be an issue, I would nonetheless like to use a robust boom stand.

Thoughts and suggestions, anyone?

Is an EOS 1D markII N a valid body in 2014...

… As a second body for animals photo ?

Hello everybody,

I have several oportunities to get a 1D IIN, between 400€ and 600€ ($520 - $780) pending the number of shutter actuations (between 50k and 90k). All look fine on the photos, and two of them are sold in an area reasonably close to my home, where I would be able to handle and test them prior potential purchase.

I already own a 5D III, which I use for every kind of photos. For animals, I feet an EF300 f2.8L IS II with or without the extenders 1.4 III or 2.0 III.

I don't really need another body. I am tempted because of the reputation of robustness of this specific 1D and its AF (some in a French Canon forum consider that it has been the best AF of all Canon bodies, apart 5D III and 1D X). I would use it for animals, with my 300 combos, especially when climatic or environmental conditions would be a bit aggressive for the 5D III integrity. The 8.5 Mpix are enough for what I do of my captures.

Do you think this body still worth it ? Are the prices correct ? What would be its drawbacks apart from an ergonomic from an old age ?

Thank you for your advices,
Stef.

Your favourite motorsports events

Hi all, there is another thread which has lots of very knowledgeable people so I thought I’d start a new thread regarding motorsport in general, please feel free to add your photos, no matter what the event, from Karting to F1, all welcome.
I’ll start with a couple from last year’s Dubai 24 hour, which takes place again on the 10th and 11th of Jan next year. The first is me and Jenson Button's dad (John), the next is the main man at the Dubai Autodrome (owner!). Hope you like them :D

UWA Lens Discussion

What do you guys think about getting a UWA lens for a 6D? Rokinon 14mm F2.8 seems to get all the attention around here, but how does it feature besides landscape photography? Have anyone tried using it for a function or portrait purposes? How does the Tokina 16-28mm F2.8 hold up to it? Is it a versatile lens, or a very specific usage lens? How does the Tokina perform? Any other lens to recommend besides Canon 16-35mm F2.8, since as far as I've heard for that price it kinds of suck, compared to Nikkor 14-24mm F2.8? (It's simply too expensive anyway :-X).

The unbreakable is broken.

So finally payed up and bought a few pelican cases. 1540 I think and the 1740. Sadly the 1740 got shipped to me cracked! I am blown away! I thought this was the unbreakable box. Super nervous now. The cracking happened when there was nothing in it and the cardboard shipping box had very little to no damage on it. Bought this so I can ship my stuff to Jamaica to do a job. Now wondering if I should switch! Any one had this happen to them ? Should I stay with pelican?

600 ex rt GEL holder, seriously?

Hi guys and a merry christmas to you all!

I got my 600 rt + st-e3 transmitter just before christmas and wanted to ask a question or two.

1. Why is the gel holder open on the sides, the sides undefused and not even covered by the gel? This makes the uncorrected light leak out on the side and turn whatever it hits very blue (I'm using the darker orange gel indoors), plus then it gives very hard shadows to the sides even though my flash is pointed to the roof. I eventually found some black tape (sounds familiar?) and taped all around the top of the holder, except the front, to prevent uncorrected colored light to mess up my shots, what were Canon thinking?? Anyone else experienced this and perhaps solved this?

2. The sensor that tells the flash and camera that a gel is in place only works when the flash is on camera (and superbly might I add), why doesn't this information travel to the camera when used wirelessly?? I mean, the gel is a Canon original, so they now how to correct it, and the flash receives this info, why can't it travel to the camera and set the same wb as when it's mounted on the camera?

Thanks!

EF 24-70 f2.8L II Now or Wait and See?

I have used the EF 24-105 f4, for four years now and have been pretty satisfied with the IQ. However, after seeing the images shot with the 24-70 f2.8L II, I feel I am missing out on making some great images in those focal lengths.
Having read on this site, that this could be the "year of the lens," I am wondering if I should hold out for a while and see if a new/updated version of the EF 24-105L comes out before purchasing the 24-70. I doubt that any of the new lenses will include an upgraded version of the 24-105L, let alone an f2.8 version of it, but one can only hope! I think I would be happy if they came out with a 24-135L f4, if it had great IQ. Thoughts please! Happy New Year!
