Extend the "Last Edit:" marker time?

What I really like about this site is that it allows to edit the user posts indefinitely and delete them if wanted. Just one idea: It would be nice to extend the time a bit until the "Last Edit:" marker appears.

The reason is that at least for me as a non-native speaker I often find myself editing the post somewhat because after reading it again after a 1-2 minutes or so I think "Hey, that doesn't sound right". Because I'm not editing the actual content I then sometimes delete the post and re-post it to prevent it marked as "edited" - I don't know if I'm the only one doing that. Yes, I admit I could carefully use the "Preview" option, but it usually only dawns on me after reading it in the whole context after "Post".

New forum for shooting technique?

With so many good photogs and helpful members around, I often see threads centering about technique, i.e. how to shoot things with the whole Canon system and getting feedback w/o posting a gallery... but I am missing a dedicated sub-forum for this, in spite of every other poster stating that gear is not everything

Now I know this started out as a gear-head rumor site, but it's a bit unfortunate to see very unique and helpful threads buried between the next "17-40L or 16-35L", and also I have a hard time placing questions because I have to choose if it's about lenses or flashes or video :-\ ... how about it? The most general "Canon" subforum doesn't seem to cover it because it's more about the Canon brand and not what to do with your camera.

A lesson I learned the last weekend

Hi everyone,

last weekend I was kind of unmotivated when it comes to photography. I didn't have a clue where to go and what to shoot so I simply went to a nearby lake where one can always find lots of ducks. Yea I know - Ducks? BOOORING you might say - which was exactly the thought I had when I strolled there. But at least I got one thing right: I went to the lake at the late afternoon hours because I knew that there would be some gorgeous warm sunlight and intense color.

After looking at the results I was actually pretty impressed. Please take a look for yourself and leave a comment if you like!

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/bfszjr3e09rzuqn/A2R-p_Dhsk

I think this shooting was a nice reminder to me (and now to all of you hopefully) that even if you shoot completely ordinary things you can get some pretty cool results. And now go out and shoot if you can.

Greetings!

Canon 400mm f/5.6 L

Looking into a super telephoto. I have my 70-200 F/4 IS which is great. I have rented to 100-400mm L which is found to be great, just not as sharp as I would like it to be at 400. I figure the 400L with a monopod should make for some good birding shots...Any experience?

And yes, I saw a few past postings but they are all over a year old...

Thinking of swapping a 5d3 for a 1D4.....

Just wanted to get some thoughts from people who have had both cameras.

I shoot a lot of varied stuff from portraits to events, landscape, nature and wildlife (this is where my main interest lies). I upgraded from a 7D to a 5DIII mostly for the better noise handling and full frame sensor despite losing the crop factor advantage. I have been very happy with my 5D3 and I would absolutely love a 1DX for the integrated grip, better weather sealing, FPS and deeper buffer.

The 1DX however is currently not in my budget so I have been kicking around the idea of going from my 5D3 to a 1D4. The only issues that I have run into with my 5D3 are having to wait for the buffer to clear from some action sequences I've taken and the lack of interchangeable focusing screens when I've been using some of my Zeiss lenses and manually focusing large aperture lenses.

Anyone have any thoughts on this crazy idea?

Tip to use autoISO with fill flash in 5D III

I've find a cool way to use safety shift in 5D. If you use Tv mode and safety shift (ISO), camera will use as high ISO as needed. It actually works identically w/wo flash.

The best thing is that you can use autoISO or set ISO manually. If you set ISO manually, consider your setting as a minimum ISO setting, camera will rise it anyways when needed. This is very nice feature in low light, where fill flash is needed. You can, for example, set high ISO to have f2-2.8, but when it gets darker, f1.2-1.8 are used and if that is not enough, ISO will be risen even more.

Trade current lenses for 70-200L f4 IS or 70-300L

My local specialist shop has a pair of secondhand L teles in stock - both in fantastic condition. I've currently got a 70-300 non L and a 10-22 that I can't use on my 6D, I've also a 1.4x II and potentially a 135L to trade...

Getting shut of the 70-300 non L and 10-22 is a no brainer, but I'm cut between the two white L teles that the shop are selling, both with a 12 month warranty. The 70-200 would work with the x1.4, but would I miss the 135L if I traded that in too ? Hmmm...

Thoughts ?

What chopped off my (Bokeh) balls?

Hey everybody so I was looking at a bunch of shots I've taken recently with my 85 1.2 II on my 5dIII. I've noticed that on a number of shots that are taken wide open, the bokeh balls seem to be "cutt off" on parts. I've attached a picture to show what I am talking about. If you look at the upper right hand part of the frame you can see some of the out of focus highlights appear as balls with parts that are "sliced off." I've heard some people say something about the light gets cut off by the mirror box or something like that, but I was just curious what you guys thought. I basically just want to verify that this is normal functioning for both the lens and the camera.

Why Wedding Photographers’ Prices are “Wack”?

I came across this article the other day...a lady was complaining about the high prices photographers charge for weddings, etc.

This was a very interesting article about the lady complaining, and a very well, logical, thought out response.

Give this a read and let me know what you think......

Useless or absurd accessories

What have you seen for idiotic accessories or for items that were just not thought out....

I saw a car window mount tripod head..... You roll down the window, slip it over the edge of the glass, and mount your camera or spotting scope to it. This one was marketed as XXXXXX window mount, real tree camouflage. Why would you need camouflage? With a couple of square inches of camouflage the critters will not be able to see you? That somehow they will miss the car, the big white lens, and the person behind it, but it is the tiny mount that matters?

Sort of like camouflage flashlights :)

Great customer service - Wex Photographic UK

So this year has been tough, I was laid off from the day job and doing a bit of second shooting at weddings has dried up with the guy I was shooting for (if any UK chaps are looking for a South East based second, please drop me a line!) so with Christmas knocking on our door I was filled with a sinking feeling when my step daughter (12 years old) said she wanted a camera like mine and wanted to learn all about photography.

Now this would be a lovely pass time for us and give us more chance to bond so I set about looking for a used low end dslr and settle on getting her a 450D as they have enough features for her needs starting out and cheap enough for my current situation.

I call Wex and get talking to a rep there and explained what kind of thing I was looking for and my level of equipment (5d3 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 etc) and rather than just go to the huge stock list and just send anything, seems to have found me a very good example.

Boxed near mint looking original packaging 450D with most cables still in original packaging which is a great start indeed. Open the box and the body looks like it is brand new, as does the kit lens (18-55) so I am chuffed to bits with the service and the quality being totally as described which is quite unusual for used equipment.

Needless to say I will be looking for another body should I ever start to shoot weddings solo and she will want to upgrade from the 450D at some point and get a couple of her own lens....Wex will now get a good bit more trade from me in the future as good customer service is something long lost these days (or maybe I was just too used to Jessops lol).

Anyway that is all, if you want a bit of kit, sure they are not as cheap as a bunch of online traders...but you get a service that online cheap box shifters never give...so props to them :)

Interview with Mr Masaya Maeda

DCWatch has posted an interview (Google translated) with Mr Masaya Maeda from Canon Japan. He touches on the EOS M as well as a few other things in the interview.

The main points from the conversation

A new EOS M3 camera could arrive in the 2nd half of 2014 with an EVF

New EF-M lenses are coming, though worldwide availability isn’t mentioned.

Canon is considering a prosumer/professional mirrorless camera

Video performance will be a key feature of future EOS M development.

CR’s Take

It sounds like Canon has changed its plans with EOS M. It feels like the EOS M2 may just be a stop-gap between the EOS M1 and a more advanced EOS M body & system.

We’ve also heard more reports from Europe that the M2 is not coming to that continent and Canon USA is taking the “not at this time” approach.

600 EX-RT for fill-in with burst : flash did not fire at each shot...

Hello !

First of all, let me introduce myself. I am French, I live in the French Alps close to Grenoble (the 1968 Winter Olympics city), and I have been a photography fan for many years.
Since November 2012, I moved from Olympus 4/3rd DSLR to Canon Full Frame, with an Eos 5D mkIII body and some EF lenses. I shoot mainly wildlife, nature, landscapes and sports, but I intend to dig into portrait and social photography in the coming year.
Two weeks ago, I got a Speedlite 600 EX-RT for my birthday with the ST-E3-RT trigger and an external Battery pack from Godox (Propac PB820).

I spent time to read the instruction manuals and to test this new gear at home. Yesterday, I went playing in the snow with my kids, and it was indeed an ideal case for my first “in real conditions” use. The weather was sunny (so, a lot of light with the white snow), and I wanted to try some fill-in.

Body was set to Av mode, auto ISO, center weighted metering, and equipped with the EF 70-200 f2.8L IS II. Flash was in E-TTL mode, high speed synchronization, and the external battery pack was plugged (Speedlite’s C.Fn 12 set to both inner batteries and external battery pack). I’ve been surprised to notice that when shooting 3 photos in bursts, the flash fired the first shoot, but not the following ones.

I thought that fill-in was indeed allowing burst with flash firing, and that adding an external battery pack would allow faster recycling to ensure even better flash firing at each shoot.
I know that compensating the light due to snow and sunny ambiance requires some power, but I am a bit disappointed here. Is it the settings of my gear, or shall I consider that this case was a bit “extreme” for a first “in real conditions” ? Could you advise me ?

Another question : why, when using a Speedlite with the body in auto ISO, the ISO automatically sets to 400 ?

Thank you all for your help and advices.

Which 70-200?

Hi Folks.
I am making a Christmas wish list, thought I might try my luck with one more expensive gift! Something in the 70-200 range!
It will be second hand, used, pre loved or whatever you prefer to call it!
I am thinking in the £400 to perhaps £500 budget, so it looks like I may be able to get an F4L IS, F2.8L non IS or I have seen Sigma F2.8 with IS for about the same price. All price estimates are from completed eBay sales, and the F4 for sale locally.

Which lens would you go for and why?

What are the chances of getting a poor copy of each individual lens?

Edit. I am not specifically in to thin DOF pictures though I do understand I can stop an F2.8 down to F4 should I wish to but it doesn't work the other way! :D

Thanks for any insight into this dilemma.

Cheers Graham.

Bought at 6D on Black Friday; AFMA or not?

I bought my first auto-focus micro adjustment capable camera this week (Canon 6D-$1400 Black Friday special). My question is, should I?

1) Go out and shoot pictures without worrying about AFMA?
2) Only consider AFMA if I am unhappy with real world images?
3) Use AFMA feature no matter what on all my lenses?
4) Selectively use AFMA for my fast lenses (F2.8 and wider)?

If the answer is to use AFMA, what work flow do you recommend?

Paul

Impressions of the weekend, feedback appreciated

I shot a party friday night and got some results that I wanted to share with you guys. I'm pretty happy with the shots i got this weekend. I was experimenting quite a lot and it was paying of for me. I could definetly up my game in the nightclub photography area and gain some experience with color gels and off-camera flash.

The lens I used was a Tokina 12-24mm for APS-C sized sensors. The results when using long exposures, zooming and using multiple flashes are pretty interesting, especially in the range where the image circle can't cover the hole sensor of my 5D, it's almost like the light trails are coming out of the picture.

Tell me what you think, I really appreciate every feedback. :)

Canon 24mm f2.8 IS Prime or Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC Zoom

Hi,

I'm looking for a lens that has autofocus to cover me in the wide angle realm of 24mm. Generally I prefer shooting with primes, and don't own any zooms. On the occasion that I need a zoom I generally rent. Part of the reason why I invest in primes, is there speed that I would not normally achieve with a slower zoom.
The Canon 24mm f 1.4 although, awesome is way out of my current price range, so I've been checking out the new 24mm f2.8 IS, and have been pleased with it's image quality. However it's aperture speed is only at 2.8, so I can't help but wonder if I should be just looking to get a fast zoom, like the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 which also has Image Stabilization, but would give me versatile focal lengths, or if I'd be gaining a much better image by the 24mm f2.8 prime.
I mainly shoot either street photography portraits or studio or location portraits.
With my street photography, speed of autofocus is also key.

Would love to get peoples recommendation and thoughts.

Canon 24-105 vs canon 24-70 ii

Who here has upgraded from the 24-105 to the 24-70 ii? What are your thoughts and was it worth the change?

I have extensive experience with my 24-105. It's my favorite landscape lens and have shot with it for years. Always been a touch soft in my opinion, but nothing I could not get past in post.

I don't care about IS. This is a pretty short lens and most of my shooting with it is tripod mount.

My first go at Biffing - Am I doing this right??

As the subject says, I'm kinda new to Birds in Flight. But the other day, I happened to observe a pigeon making multi passes across my garden. It piqued my interest, enough to watch it for a while, only to notice it would fly to a near by tree (Close enough to warrant at 70-200 on FF (I swear I'm not the only person who judges really world distancing in mm FL's!!)) test the durability of a twig, and one decided, go about breaking on free, before flying off, I assume, to build it's nest.
I thought this was a golden opportunity, so here is the resulting picture... any feed back would be appreciated!
