Got paid $350 for doing what I LOVE - photography

My rental 300mm f2.8 IS II arrived yesterday.

I went to local high shool this morning to test out the lens - photograph "little soccer league". I took over 500 photos. The coach asked to see the photos and I showed him my pictures. He offered to pay for all 500 photos for $350(about 1hr of fun for me). I took the offer and gave him all JPEGs. I promised to edit some raws and will give him some later.

Should I change my carreer ::)

Broken 70-200mm f/2.8

So I more or less, inherited a canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS (mark i), the glass is super sharp however before i got it, the lens was dropped from a tree. Because of this, the internal USM focusing motor is loose on the inside of the barrel. This causes a lot of shots to go out of focus, (duh) but all I have to do is tip the front element up towards the sky and the USM will fall back into place and I can keep shooting. The opposite is also true, if i point the lens towards the ground the USM will fall out of place and the lens wont focus on anything. Also due to the loose elements, a lot shots just end up soft from time to time.

First question, has anyone experienced a similar phenomena with this lens or any other for that matter?

Next, I'm ready to get the lens repaired, I have no experience shipping things off to canon. Does anyone have any idea how much a repair like this would cost? Also, what's the next step in contacting canon and shipping the lens back to the mothership?

5D III focusing at events - slow

I use the 5D III for dance, school sports events where people move about erratically.

I previously used a 1D III also a 7D

I use ,9 point, center single point single shot focusing where I follow my subject with the center focused-locked, half depressing the shutter, on the subject I then quickly re-frame, as the subject is still moving, and complete the shot.

Not very happy as the old 1D III also the 7D were much faster at finding and keeping the focus with fewer missed shots.
Can somebody tell me how come the new 5D is slower at focusing simple focusing tasks then the 1D III and the 7D?

Am I missing something?

Joshua (one year Time lapse short film)

Hello everyone
I have been working on time lapse project over the last year. It is about Joshua Trees living in CA.
I used 5d mark III, 17-40 f4 L, 24-70mm f2.8 L , 135mm f2 L
I especially loved 135mm f2 L lens. it is such a great lens for both landscape and portrait. I highly recommend you guys to use it.

Walking around with the 600mm IS II - thoughts

Just curious as to how many of you carry this lens around without a tripod / monopod and for how long.

My shooting needs are primarily for wild life. This lens will be on loan for about 10 days starting this friday 11-22-13 and all I have handy is a
1)Gitzo monopod (GM3551 6X Carbon Fiber Monopod )
2)Benro Travel Angel tripod (modelA-269M8 TRA269)
3)Acratech GP-s ballhead
4)Manfrotto 701HDV video type head which I know is not ideal for bird shooting.

Both heads and both Monopod and tripod can support about 25 lbs+ as I recall. I do realize when mounted, the lens will be front heavy and if on the Travel Angel tripod one leg should be straight out in front of the lens for proper support along with the neck strap of the camera avoiding a tip over.

I can comfortably carry the 5D M3 and the 400mm 5.6 L for about 3 hours on all sorts of hiking trails or so and not be fatigued. Given the 600 is much more bulkier and heavier I was hoping to do additional preparation given the above scenario with mentioned current gear. I was also considering (I have the equipment) to do a DIY Black Rapid sling as in this video which I believe I found in this forum many months ago. DIY: DSLR Shoulder strap w/ quick release and tripod support (read description)

I have a back pack for cameras the Flipside 400AW. I think this lens will just fit as I recall its about 18" long.

Open to any thoughts, suggestions, tips, questions from anyone who has used this lens personally and has chosen to carry it around or at least try.

Materials used in EOS Camera Bodies?

Two questions regarding materials used in EOS camera bodies:

Corning has developed Gorilla Glass 3 for computer and smart phone LCDs, and the glass is super tough, and is basically scratch proof.

Why doesn't Canon use Gorilla Glass for the camera body LCDs, so we don't have to worry about the LCD being scratched or damaged?

My second question, is there a lighter composite material that camera bodies (and lenses) could be made from, that is just as strong as titanium, which would help reduce the weight of camera bodies and lenses?

Upgraded - Sell old equipment?

I've just upgraded to a Canon 6D from a T4i. I sold off an old film scanner to finance the purchase of the camera itself so I'm only out for the cost of the 16-35 f2.8L lens which I could probably be re-coup by selling the T4i and my 2 lenses for it (17-55 f2.8 and 10-22).

I'm trying to decide if it's worthwhile to keep the T4i and just eat the cost of the lens. I'm a hobbyist although I've done a few family weddings so I don't need a backup camera but it might be nice for harsher environments (Although if it was harsh enough I'd either keep with my cell phone camera or Canon P&S if I didn't care about photo quality and if I did care about photo quality I'd probably want to take my best camera in... It's not like I'm going to take my T4i on a roller coaster regardless and I haven't been out of the US for decades...)

It's gonna be hard to say good-bye to the 17-55 though lotsa sentimental value with that one (on the other hand I could get the 24-70L a little quicker... :) )

Mainly, is there any reason to keep a cropped camera around now that I'm going FF? (I don't have the 6D yet thanks to FedEx' goofy shipping but that's another story...)

Which lens to start with?

In a couple of weeks I will buy a Canon Mark5dIII.
I'm the owner of a 60d, but I like to go FF.
I've already got the 100mm L and I like this lens a lot.
I shoot stills (nature) and with my 60d I hardly use the 15-85 anymore.
Also because of the sharpness of the 100mm.
In december I will travel to Scotland and hope to make some nice landscapes images and know I need a lens for that.
I've got doubts over the 24-105 (cheap) and the 17-40. That's why I thought about the 16-35/24-70. But because of the new releases in 2014 I am more confused. What would you do? Primes? The 24-105 and wait till first Q of 2014? Thank you for reading my question.

16-35 2.8L II - Is it really THAT bad ?

Hi everyone,

I currently own an old 17-35 f/2.8L which might be about twenty years old...I'm quite satisfied with the sharpness, in the center, even at f/2.8 it makes the job.
I'm concerned by a strange occurrence : when shooting with a strong backlight, i have some kind of de-contrasted circle in the center of the frame. Like a white haze. That's ugly and ruins my shots.

That's why i was wondering about getting the 16-35 II, which is two versions younger than my 17-35 and is supposed to be better. But, reading the forums, i often notice than no one is really happy with his 16-35II. That's why I need your help to determine how better the 16-35II is compared to my 17-35. If it is real better, i'll get it sooner than if it is not that better.

So i need you, 16-35II users, to tell me how good/bad/disappointing it is. Is it a pleasure for you to take it, or you only use it when you NEED an ultra-wide and it 'makes the job" ?

Are you, like me, waiting for a 16/18mm f/1.8 Canon prime ?

16-35/FF or 10-22/APSC

I've read a good few reviews stating the high quality of the EF-S 10-22mm and these reviews generally include a direct comparison to the EF 16-35mm II.

Sure, the edge definitely goes to the 16-35 but by the smallest margins.

Since the D800 launched a few years back, it has become apparent that shooting landscapes has more to do with lens/body combinations than just the qualities of the lens.

So my question; head-to-head, some reviews say the 16-35 is marginally superior to the 10-22 but I'd like to know how much better a 5D mkIII mounted 16-35 compares to say a 70D mounted 10-22 for landscape photography.

Suggest Macro lens - Canon 100mm vs Zeiss 100mm

Hello Folks,

I am photo enthusiast ; own 5DM3 , 24-70 2.8 , 70-200 2.8 and I've been more than happy shooting with the combo.I mostly shoot Landscape, Night Photography.
However I've been missing some Macro shots lately where I intend to take but never happens with the above mentioned lens.
So I was planning on getting Macro lens and I am confused between Canon 100mm and Zeiss 100mm.
I know the primary differences as AutoFocus vs ManualFocus ; 1:1 vs 1:2 and I am not bothered about cost.
I am based out of India and we don't have an option of renting lenses.

Please help me in giving some real life examples of 1:1 vs 1:2 reproduction ratio.
I am biased towards Zeiss but is it difficult to Manual Focus on 5DM3 because of focussing screen ?
I would be happy If someone having an experience with both the lenses gives and in-depth analysis.

Anyone using the VAF Anti Aliasing filter?

Hi all,

Is anyone out there using the VAF Antlaliasing filter for any of the canon bodies and can tell me how their experiences have been? I'm in the middle of a purchase decision, and thinking about buying a 70D as my second stills and video body to my Canon 5D Mark II. I really like the 70D's speed of focus and the video autofocus system, but when I shot with it the other day for video I was so disappointed by the amount of moire and aliasing I experienced.
Just curious..if anyone's used the filter and had good or bad experiences?

CPS again at Platinum or self-insure?

I have been a Gold member a long time. When the new structure was announced I was on the fence about moving to Platinum. (I have been eligible for Plat for a while so it had been a choice to stick with the lower Gold$.) I began to lean toward upgrading to go forward this Fall at renewal time, but I had a surprising interaction with CPS that has made me consider self-insuring and paying like a regular citizen at time of need. So I am writing here to see what readers here think. Writing it all out will help me think about the decision, too.

First, I look at this as insurance. Insurance isn't an investment. I believe that I make a mistake if I plan to get back the net value (of services) I paid in. That said, how is the CPS way of doing things supporting me?

The incidents that forced this into perspective as a renewal question were:
I had sent in a 1DsMk3 body with all forms and a clean-and-check chit. I asked for a shutter count as I had bought the 1DsMk3 body used and I wanted an official document for that future time when I sold it to the next user. No shutter check on the repair order and when I called I was told they could not issue a new copy of the work order. They could probably e-mail me, no letterhead. (They did show the number, approx 74,500, in their RN# records visible to the customer service staffer.)

After that I tested the sensor for the first time since receiving it. There was a big round spot in the frame. I should look to see it if is among the other dark dust spots on the sensor before sending... Anyway, the clean-and-check chit sent them had a note specifically requesting sensor cleaning. I had taken the body out of the bag and removed the body cap, placed a lens on the camera and taken it out for a walk. Shot the sky, confirmed the visibility of the spot in some green broadleaf cactus, too. I figured I'd be without the body for a couple more weeks but hey, they'd make it right. (In Hawaii CPS must *mail* -- yes, mail -- you a label for a re-do and courier service usually takes an extra day. So two weeks give or take.)

Irvine told me that my dust represented "just one of those things about dust on sensor--it's going to happen. You can send it in again with another clean-and-check chit." Staffer checked with a Supervisor who didn't get on the phone.

I spoke to one of the CPS-specific advisers (different crew than Irvine's customer service operation.) He was a great resource, surprised they took this tack. Realizing I might opt for self-insurance I asked him for details about the listed services performed during a clean-and-check on a lens. A body is easier to see the value -- well, for me anyway. It's pretty vague about the real important questions: alignment, de-centered elements. He read a document that says they put it on a mount, but his reading of the task performed was that the ability of the lens to communicate with the body was all that was tested. Canon Repair also handles the lens to feel the performance of the rings, smoothness, and they are willing to clean the front and rear element. If there's a collar they insure it works. They will never, he said, go inside the lens during a plain old clean-and-check. That makes perfect sense to me. I'd love it if they did but let's get real, their costs would go through the roof.

I think I have been the beneficiary of extra help over and above official guidelines in the past but I suspect that flexibility in the facilities is waning.

So. Self insured from now on out?

I am not a big photo group with ten bodies out churning through three weddings every weekend. I don't get shot at as a photojournalist. My commercial photo shooting schedule isn't as crazy as it was some years back on the mainland during which I might have some piece of gear fail in a state 2,000 miles from home base. Canon saved me a few times in that crazier time. Loaners used to be handled on a phone call basis and went out that afternoon to your hotel… that kind of thing.

I have three bodies: 1DsMk3 (two of these) and a 5DMk3. Plan to get another 5D3, stick with four total. This another form of self-insurance, admittedly more $$ than Platinum $$. The only horror would be temporary loss of my treasured 17mm TSE, which I use for clients all the time. But I have a wider 12-24 Sigma lens which is plenty sharp and I *could* correct for a couple of weeks in Transform or DxO ViewPoint (don't like doing it this way but…)

Shipping alone during one equipment failure kerfuffle might pay for the $300., but having Irvine standards lowered might make some of that "help" worthless and get in the way of a successful shoot.

Wow, sorry about the wordy post. Anyone else thought through the self-insurance consideration? I have actually constructed various repair/shipping scenarios to understand the costs I would bear in typical hassles. No question, they are high costs.
Being out here in the middle of the blue Pacific cuts both ways good and bad in all things business.

So I might go for another year and bump up to Plat status. $300 is not going to break the bank. I sometimes go into the next price negotiation when faced with these decisions and just straight-faced quote a higher price to cover it. Keeps my resolve when the negotiating happens.

please make sure that my wife does not sell my gear for the Price I told her that it has cost....

My wife is usualy scared by what I spend on Canon gear. I gained some Karma after selling some lenses but had to invest some of these Points when telling her that I Need to get a 50mm again.

I did not want to go again for the huge Sigma 50mm 1.4 so I went with ye olde EF 50mm 1.4 via eBay.
Came Close to divorce this morning when the mail man delivered this 50mm lens. The previous (private) owner sent this almost mint lens in ist original box together with the sun shade and used as the Transport protection the original box of a 5D Mark III Kit. My wife is not a market maven but she can smell if a box in her Hand has this 3000 Euro smell.

Anyone else had such a Kind of Situation before?

DxO Mark

I have long used DxO software and I have almost as long distrusted DxO Mark ratings. Aside from the camera rating, which do not match what my eyes often see or at least are non-linear in the human perception of image quality, the lens ratings system is equally flawed.

Below is a snapshot of a lens comparison I did on DxO Mark. The Zeiss 100mm macro on three camera bodies. With this SAME lenses, the 5D Mark III has 20mpx of resolution, the Nikon D3x has 15mpx of resolution and the D800 has 17 mpx of resolution. Yet the Zeiss 100 mm f2.0 Makro is rated at 32 on the 5D Mark III at 31 on the Nikon D3x - even though it has 5mpx resolution LESS than the Canon and otherwise identical scores on a measurably worse sensor and the D800 is rated at 36 even though it has 3 mpx less resolution than the Canon.

WTF? What is in your secret sauce? Maybe guidelines from Nikon marketing?

DxO marks have zero credibility.

BlackRapid straps scratching up camera / CarrySpeed comparison review

I see a flurry of camera sling discussions going on, so I'd like to share an experience/review/rant.

For my convenience, I'll just paste an email I sent to BR's customer service earlier this year:

After doing a lot of research on sling-style camera straps, I came to
the conclusion that, for my purposes, you have the best products on
the market. I purchased a RS-Sport strap, followed the setup
directions, and went for a full-day walk / photo adventure in an urban
environment. I was very pleased with the comfort, and throughout the
day, I remarked to myself many times on how well thought out the
product was. However, at the end of the day, I noticed that the
ConnectR had scratched off the paint (exposing the bare metal below)
of my new 5D Mark III just below the LCD screen. I consider myself to
be a very careful person, and I'm positive that this occurred during
normal/regular usage! After much searching, I was shocked to find
only a handful of reports across various online forums of others with
the same complaint. In one or two of the posts, users warned others
to apply a strip of gaffer tape to any area that the ConnectR may
contact to prevent scraping. I wish I had seen this warning ahead of
time! My camera got scuffed up very easily and quickly, so what
gives? Do you hear this from your customers a lot? I'll most likely
be returning the strap, and I'm not really sure why I'm emailing you
-- I doubt you're going to pay to have the scratched chassis element
of my 5D3 replaced. I suppose I am, above all else, just interested
in hearing you try to defend your product design.

Their response was essentially:

...We are sorry for the scratching that has occurred on your camera. We understand your frustration in this situation. We have had a few of these comments and have discovered that there are some camera models that tend to have paint that isn't quite as durable as others...

To other BR strap owners: has the ConnectR scratched up your camera as well?
It happened so easily to me and my new 5D3, and I'm surprised that this is such an underreported complaint.
Scratching is kind of normal wear-and-tear, but the camera was like brand new, and that honestly does affect resale value.

I'm currently using the CarrySpeed FS-Pro.
I can give it all the compliments I gave above to the BR strap. Extremely comfortable. Great design.

In addition, the CS system is IMO superior for the following reasons:
  • No chance of scratching the camera.
  • Built-in Arca Swiss compatible.
  • You can actually set the camera down on a flat surface without it wobbling around unlike with BR.
  • A "cinch" feature which allows you to pull on a loop to temporarily shorten the strap and bring your camera closer to / higher up on your body. When you bring the camera back up to the shooting position, the strap loosens back up as needed without resistance.
    Edit: While I enjoy this feature, and it generally works well for me, there is one hazard to watch out for. You know how I said that if you pull the camera up to shoot, the strap gets long again? If you bend down / lean forward, the same thing happens. Imagine leaning forward with a big lens if you're standing next to something.. the strap will loosen up and then CLONK. BR has front/rear bumpers to address this issue (see below).
  • Extra goodies included. You get a an extra ball mount thing that you can attach to a tele's tripod ring so that you can quickly hook your strap to that instead. I think it also comes with a hand strap or something (which I don't really care about).

Edit:
Turning this into more of an unbiased review/comparison, I'll add a few points that BR wins on:
  • BR has front/rear bumpers to secure the camera to a particular part of the sling (preventing it from sliding around). This is good if you want to 'park' it and prevent it from clonking into something if you bend down or lean forward. CS does not have this.
  • There is the option to use the SPORT version or BRAD (stupid name IMO) attachment. This is just an extra strap that goes under your arm to prevent the main strap from sliding back and forth over your shoulder. This, combined with the front and rear bumpers, makes it easy to keep the camera really secure on your body.
  • Comparatively more of the strap is made of nylon strap material (vs the main shoulder pad), so there is space for me to stick on my lens cap holder

Recommendation for travel lens combo 24-105 f/4 + 40mm f/2.8

Hello All,

I'm traveling to Chile next week and need to confirm that 24-105mm plus the 40mm on my 5DMK3 will do the trick for Santiago and 100 miles around it. We are not going to the mountains but will head to a ranch in Curacavi.

I have plenty of other lenses including the 24-70 II, 35mm f/1.4, 17-40mm and 70-200mm f/4 IS among my other choices. I excluded other portrait primes from the list.

It is summer in Chile so the days are longer and outdoor light will be good. 24mm should be wide enough to capture architecture for Santiago and Valparaiso. For challenging indoors, I'm thinking the 40mm, IS of 24-105mm and ISO of 5DMK3 are options.

I don't want to travel with a lot of camera gear so I'm thinking this is manageable weight in my messenger bag.

What do you all think? Any other combos to consider?

Canon 7D Custom Settings Help Requested

Hi Everybody!!!
I'm a fairly good amateur photographer; I have a Canon 7D, and my main-use lens is a 24-70L. I take photos mostly of my 2-year old son, and friend / family photos, plus 'events' from my volunteer activities as an EMT.

The Canon 7D has settings C1, C2, and C3 on the mode-select dial. I've really never gotten into the Custom Settings. I know, for example, I can change the Auto Focus from the half-way select of the shutter release button to a back button.

But the 'Why' of most of the Custom Functions still evades me, even after reading the Canon manual.

So, I'm coming to you for help!! What are the Custom Functions that are most useful (to you, that you'd recommend to me)?

Also, are they 'Global settings', or just for a C1, C2 or C3? So, would I want to 'Globally' set my auto-focus to a back button, or only under, say, C1 and C2, so I can get back to half-way down on the Shutter Release for C3?

Also, there are different types of photography --- so, would I want to set C1, C2 and C3 for specific Day / Action photography, Night / Flash photography, and Video use?
