EOS 7D Mark II in March?

A spec list has shown up for an EOS 7D Mark II with a possible announcement in March of 2014.

According to the rumor, the sensor is not yet confirmed, though it does mention it won’t be the same as the EOS 70D. Also a mention of innovative video features, something we’ve talked about previously. There’s not much new here as far as specs go, but at least the camera is being talked about.

20MP or 24MP sensor with Dual Pixel CMOS AF

Auto-Focus system similar to the EOS 5D Mark III (61 points), possibly the same as 5D3

High frame rate, 10-12 fps

“high grade” weather sealing, like Canon’s professional DSLRs

Dual Digic V+ processor

Single card slot

WiFi & GPS

Innovative video features

Price around $2000

Very good ISO performance

Birds on 100-400L with 70D

I have a Canon 100-400L that is very sharp on my XTi. I would like to use it to shoot still photos and video of sitting small birds (warblers) or small birds moving about in vegetation (low light) on a to be purchased 70D. Do any of you who have posted the many fine bird photos on this forum have experience with a 100-400L on a 70D?
Your comments will be greatly appreciated

I previously posted this on the Lenses Forum but only one person responded (THANKS for responding).

Is it still the time for the 16-35 ?

Hi i'm John Charles and this's my first post here.
Well I've seen the 16-35 f/2.8 in a promotion but i read here some time ago that soon Canon will produce the 14-24 f/2.8 so my doubt is: buying the rebated 16-35 or waiting for the new lens. Of course if the new lens will be released in more than one year and it will cost twice the actual 16-35 i'll take the 16-35.
thanks

70-200 f/2.8L IS II AFMA Settings

Had this lens a reasonably short time and haven't had chance to use it too much yet.
On my first tests I was really pleased with it as far as sharpeness goes. Was similar to my f/4 IS version it replaced.

I've now just spent an hour adjusting AFMA on it and surprised how much I could improve it.
Wide end is now: +10
Tele end is now: +5

My 24-70 f/2.8L II doesn't need any adjustment at all so both set to 0.

Is this quite normal for the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II ?
I guess it's not too excessive on AFMA. Maybe the wide end. Anyway I've re-tested over and over and confirm that it nails focus at these settings so I'll definitely leave it set this way.

What do you guys have your 70-200 f/2.8L IS II AFMA set to out of interest?

Focus issues with 600mm f4 is ii

I just received a new canon 600mm f4 is ii lens and am having trouble getting consistent sharp focus. One will be very sharp the next image or two will be soft. When manually focusing same issue. I have tried with is off and on there seems to be no difference. I used a tripod and shutter release. I assume it is my problem but am at a loss as to what I am doing wrong, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Spontaneous Separation of 5D3 from 70-200 II??

Colleagues: A strange and unpleasant event befell me. I had my 70-200 II on my 5D3, with a BR strap attached to the tripod-collar, so the camera body was not weight-bearing. Abruptly and with no warning the camera fell off and hit the ground. Minor damage, coulda been a lot worse. I can think of only 3 possible causes:
a) I had not correctly locked the camera onto the lens' bayonet mount.
b) I had somehow hit the lens-release button on the body inadvertently.
c) flange or bayonet locking defect.
I am a very experienced daily shooter and (a) is too humiliating for me to accept.
Anything like this ever happen to anyone here? My guess is (b), but what are your thoughts? Thank you for your time.

High Megapixel DLSR a niche market?

I had an email exchange with someone in Canon USA marketing recently. As a long time user of Canon equipment, I expressed my disappointment with Canon's lack of a high megapixel offering. With the D800/E and now the Sony A7R, Canon is distinctly lacking in that area. The response I got was troubling to me. I'm paraphrasing but, basically, I was told that the person agreed with me but that high megapixel DLSRs was a "niche" market. Personally I don't consider landscape, commercial, fine art, large group photography, etc... a niche market. It is more of an enthusiast, semi-pro and pro market but a "niche" market? I guess Canon USA also considers mirror-less bodies a niche market as well...

I had also pointed out that Canon was pricing camera bodies much more expensively than the competition. The answer to that one was that the market would decide prices. To me he was saying, buy somebody else's equipment, Canon doesn't care. There are plenty more people out there willing to pay their prices. I've been with Canon since they came out with the EOS mount back in '87 but it may finally be time for a change.

Canon's Q3 Financial Report: A Few Camera-Specific Quotes

I was curious to see what Canon’s third-quarter earnings release said regarding cameras, which constitute a single product line, among many. A few highlights:

------DSLRs
“Within the Imaging System Business Unit, sales of the EOS 5D Mark III, 6D and 70D advanced-amateur-model interchangeable-lens digital cameras continued to grow. Furthermore, especially in Japan, the new entry-level EOS Digital Rebel SL1/T5i cameras proved popular, further contributing to sales and helping the company to maintain its top share of the global market.” “…efforts to increase and maintain market share through the introduction of new interchangeable-lens digital camera and inkjet printer products featuring advanced technologies, led to an increase in third-quarter net sales of 14.2% to ¥913.1 billion (U.S.$9,318 million) from the year-ago period…”

-----Compact Cameras:
“Within the digital compact camera, the market is projected to continue shrinking, mainly among low-end models, due to the popularity of smartphones.” “…although total sales volume declined due to the market slowdown and the increasing popularity of smartphones, sales volume increased from the previous year for such high added-value products as the PowerShot SX50 HS and SX510 HS, each equipped with a high-magnification zoom lens that exceeds the capabilities of lenses offered by smartphones.”

So, Canon’s focus on the higher end is paying off, and nothing here telegraphs a perceived need to change that approach. They also seem pleased with the low bar they’ve set for themselves in terms of innovation. (I say that as someone who’d hoped the 70D would lessen my leanings toward the GH3 / BMPCC. Although I AM still bouncing a 6D around in my B&H cart….)

Museum Exhibit -- One or More of Ours

.
Just saw this news piece about a new photo exhibit in New York:

http://news.yahoo.com/photos/rising-waters-photographs-from-hurricane-sandy-unvieled-at-museum-of-the-city-of-new-york-1382475013-slideshow/

The first picture was taken by one of our forum members, someone I consider a genuinely great photographer. Congratulations, Bob!! If I recall correctly, he used a 5D3 and a 70-200 f/2.8II.

I seem to recognize some other photos originally posted here by some of out photographers. If so, please stand up and take a bow!!

Congratulations to everyone.

First fast prime for weddings & portraits

Hi all!

To set the scene: I've been working with zoom lenses for the past 3 years (24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f4 IS). I use a 5DmkIII, and as backup a 650D/Rebel. Now, I want to take my photography further, as I absolutely admire the look of photo's taken with a fast prime lens, being f1.2 or f1.4, the nice bokeh, the thin DOF which gets the attention to the subject...

So, I am looking for my first prime lens, which I'll use for weddings and portraits, but I don't know which one. I already have the 50mm f1.8, but the quality isn't perfect, not sharp wide open and no nice bokeh.

Therefore, I'm doubting on following combinations:

- Set with: 35-85-135mm: Get the sigma 35mm f1.4 and maybe canon 85mm f1.8 as well right now, afterwards I can still get the 135mm, or;

- Set with 24/28-50-100mm: Get the canon 50mm f1.4 now, buy canon 100mm macro afterwards, possibly get the 24mm or 28mm later as well.

I don't have a huge budget, so the expensive lenses above 1200 EUR/USD are out for the moment... When I look at which focal lengths I use most, there is no clear winner between 35mm range or 50mm range. 35mm gets used more during preparation, party, the 50mm more during portraits, ceremony, etc.

I want to get out of my comfort zone of shooting with the 24-70, as I use this lens always at f3.5 or f4 due to lack of sharpness at f2.8.

To give you an idea of by whom I'm inspired:
- first of all Lindsay London (http://www.wellhellophotography.com/blog/,
- Trevor Dayley http://www.trevordayleyblog.com/ and
- Jasmine Star http://www.jasminestarblog.com/index.cfm
I know I won't get such results in the beginning, but as they prefer fast primes and shoot these wide open a lot of the time, I believe practising a lot with a prime would help me the most..

Thank you so much for your advice, experiences, comments!

Best regards!

My New Book

I wanted to share my new photo book with my fellow CR forum members. The subject is a state park about 2 miles from my house that has one of the top gardens in the southern United States. I started shooting there here and again mostly out of convenience, but after 4 years, I decided it was time to put the flower macros, landscapes, and other photos into a book. I foolishly decided I wanted to name the flowers, thinking it wouldn't be too hard. I was so wrong, and if I had to do it again, I would have taken photos of the leaves, stems, petals, etc. because flowers are really hard to identify with all of the cultivation and hybridization growers have done.

There are three free ways to read it from the link below:

Power Failure on 7D

Help! Wonder if any other forum members have had the camera fail to power on. I put in a new battery but it failed to power up as well. Had bought a Mack extended warranty and the camera failed just about a week before the end of the warranty but I was out of country and could not get the camera to them. They refused to honor the warranty! Buyers beware! I will be sending into Canon to get an assessment. Up to this time I have had absolutely no problem with this camera. I have been waiting for the new 7DII but now may move to a FF. :-[

2013 hasn’t been a stellar year for Canon

Canon Inc., the world’s largest camera maker, cut its annual profit forecast and predicted its first drop in sales of models with an interchangeable lens as consumers switch to smartphones to take photos.

Net income will probably total 240 billion yen ($2.5 billion) for the year ending December, the Tokyo-based company said in a statement yesterday, cutting its earlier forecast of 260 billion yen. The new projection missed the 250.8 billion-yen average of 21 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Smartphones are eating into digital camera sales as companies such as Apple Inc. and Sony Corp. release new handsets with stronger built-in lenses and sensors to lure shoppers. The value of worldwide camera shipments dropped 19 percent in August from a year earlier, a ninth consecutive monthly decline, according to the Camera & Imaging Products Association in Tokyo.

Hello Old Friend.

Today I was passing a camera shop (passing, haha, it's 2 miles out my way) when I noticed a good used copy of a lens I owned a few years back and had regretted selling ever since, so now I am the proud new owner of a new (to me) old school 28mm f2.8. I know the world has moved on, and the current versions are immensely better, but this was immensely cheaper and I always liked the images I got in the past.

Nice and clean. Clean blades, Hoods and box and I got it for a song as well.

Have you ever went back to any old favourites?

Yongnuo 622-Cs & Nissin 866 mkIIs

Hi,

I have some of the 622C radio transmitters which work great in ETTL with my Canon 700D and Nissin D886 mk2s. Shots come out nice and no real need for FEC tweaking.

If I want to be really creative though and use the flash in Manual mode it wont fire/flash, any thoughts on steps needed? I change mode on the back of the flash and I see it auto change to manual on the flashgun display, just no "flash"..

If I had any issues I, to be honest, was expecting the other way round ( ie no ETTL but Manual ok)
