Rodenstock Filters. Any experience?

Purchased a lens used from Canada and the seller included a Rodenstock filter. I honestly have never heard of the brand until now. A quick google search and I found them to be high regarded, some say as good as heliopan and B&W. I think the filter ring is brass. Though I found them to be more available in the Europe, B&H has a basic UV filter (77mm) for $85. Specs say that it is 16 layer multicoated.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/875436-REG/Rodenstock_507711_77mm_UV_Blocking_Digital.html

Anyone have experience with these filters? Thoughts? Any and all advice is appreciated.

Sigma lens 17-70 f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary

Does anyone use that zoom lens ? I mostly use my two dslr bodies (40D and recently acquired 70d) for wildlife photography but i need an all around zoom mostly for portraits, landscapes and travels.

I know the 24-105 f/4 L IS is certainly my best option, but considering the low price of that Sigma lens, i'm curious to read opinions from photographers who utilize or can compare it to the 24-105 f/4 L IS or even the ol' 24-70 f/2.8 L (if it can be compared to these kind of lenses)...

I f you're fans of other third party zoom lenses that can interest me, don't hesitate !

Thanks.

Noisy static in background of video recording with 70D

Hi all, I have been recording video with my 70D, and have noticed significant audio static in the background of footage. It sounds like a constant "hiss". I am using the built-in camera mic. I have never experienced this with my 60D which I also used considerably for video recording as well.

Is anyone experiencing the same problem with their 70D?

Cheers.

Gateway lens

Photography is like a drug habit.... You get your first hit, and your hooked... you start off small (usually) then build up to the heavier stuff, and the heavier the stuff the more you want to use! So what was your 'gateway lens'? When and what was the lens or other bit of kit that broke your barrier and led to the reduced coffers most of us face due to this pricey hobby.

For me it was the EF-S 17-55. Before that I had a 450D and kit lens + 50 1.8 for years and could not imagine or ever conceive a situation where i would spend more than a couple of 100$ on a lens. Then i borrowed and subsequently bought the 17-55, and in doing so released the kraken. I had waited 2 years before buying it, but after that i added a 10-22, 55-250, tripod, 580ex II etc to the kit within a year... then came the L lenses....

So, for a bit of fun, what was your gateway lens/piece of kit?

From B&H Photo

B&H Photo has posted a quick review by Lloyd Chambers of the highly anticipated Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 APO-Distagon lens. People are expecting this lens to set a new standard in SLR lens performance.

Says Lloyd

“Photographers looking for the very best in imaging quality need look no further. When everything is considered, the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 APO-Distagon is without a doubt the finest lens ever produced for a 35mm SLR or DSLR (or rangefinder). It sets a new benchmark.

The Otus 55mm f/1.4 APO-Distagon on a high-resolution DSLR makes a strong challenge to medium format on total imaging quality (not just resolution). Moreover, in resolution terms, the 55mm f/1.4 has ample reserves for a future 60/70/80-megapixel DSLR.”

Samyang 800f8

My new lens just came in.

One set of images is out of the T3+400f5.6 (ISO 1600) and the other out of the 5D2+800f8 (ISO3200), 1/500sec and I used the same shooting technique for both so results were similar enough. I'll have to wait for a sunny day to really test what it can do, but just from what I've seen so far there's no doubt that the Samyang is great value for money. I must say I was expecting a bit more, but even if it only equals my 400mm lens, at a fraction of the cost it's still doing pretty well.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II

We’ve heard a bit of talk recently about the follow-up to the EOS 7D. The same sort of time frame is still mentioned, an announcement in Q2 of 2014.

One suggestion is the 7D Mark II will become a bit more video oriented. So beyond a “pro” APS-C camera, it will also be highly desirable for the videographer. The camera as such will also retail well above the EOS 70D.

We’re also told any follow-up to the EOS 7D will get a new sensor and not use the 20.2mp sensor that is found in the EOS 70D.

New Lens Today

I keep a eye on our local Craigslist, and a few days ago, I noticed a Nikon 200-400mm f/4 G VRI for $2500. The write up did not sound like a scam, so I sent a e-mail and received nothing back. It stayed there, and finally, I sent another e-mail and got a reply.
Today I went down to the owners office, (He is a Doctor in Spokane), and looked it over. He bought it new and it was used twice. Not a mark on it, clean and like new.

Being a doctor, he has been extremely busy, and probably did not return e-mails promptly, so my perseverance paid off.

Now, if I only had a Nikon Camera :)

I have been negotiating for a used D3 that needs a shutter, but I am a bit scared of it. I do have a Nikon to EOS adapter, so I'll use manual focus at full aperture to take a few test shots tomorrow.

Its such a nice lens that I may go ahead with the D3 Deal, or even buy a D7100 to use it with. I'll certainly never afford $11K for a new Canon one, or even 7500 for a new Nikon lens.

Modern Reflected Light Meters

Years ago, when in-camera TTL metering was annoyingly unreliable, I found my old Sekonic spot meter to be pretty indispensable. I haven't used one for at least 5 years, however because I thought that today's TTL metering is completely sufficient and far more convenient than the handheld meter I used to own.

The past couple weeks I've been eying the new Sekonic lineup and questioning my disposition because I've run into many scenarios when I didn't want to use the in-camera meter, or the results of the in-camera meter were just way off.

My question is this: Could those of you who use a recent model share your thoughts on which features in them you find most useful (incident capabilities aside), and how does the performance contrast from, say, the meter in the 6D?

CANON U.S.A. ANNOUNCES THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED EOS 5D MARK III.1 DIGITAL SLR CAMERA

Featuring the Exact Same Image Quality, 61-Point High Density Reticular AF, Six fps High-Speed Continuous Shooting and Enhanced HDVideo Recording Features as the EOS 5D MARK III

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., October 8, 2013 – On the 26th anniversary of its world-renowned EOS System, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to announce its latest model, the new EOS 5D Mark III.1 Digital SLR Camera. Similar to the release of the EOS T5i, the camera is nearly identical to the EOS 5D MARK III. The exciting upgrade includes improved metering in extremely dark environments when the LCD panel illuminates.

"We're extremely excited to announce the new capabilities of the EOS 5D MARK III.1, and think it will be extremely useful for nighttime shooters using the LCD panel." He continued by saying, "There were rumors on websites such as Metapixel that we had a phenomenon called 'light leak' but that's just false. We offered to fix these so-called problems, but people just need to be more careful when they meter at night." stated Buck Eastfall, Chief Media Defender, Canon U.S.A.

Canon developed the new EOS 5D MARK III.1 after extensive complaints by their users. At one time, Canon considered a product recall to fix the non-issue of the imaginary light leak, but deemed it too expensive and bad publicity.

A Canon insider said that the company decided that, "A simple piece of tape could be used to fix the problem, but that could hurt sales, especially if we had acknowledged the problem. With our high level of brand loyalty, we decided it would be better to offer the new EOS 5D Mark III.1 model for sale. We don't care about our customers and we hope they aren't able to tell the difference between the old and the new model."

Havasupai Falls

Im hiking down to Havasupai Falls in the Grand Canyon next week. I'm trying to limit how much I carry down with me. I'm trying to figure out what lenses to bring. I have Canon 5D MkIII. My lense choices are 17-40, 24-105. I also have 70-200 and 85 and 135 Prime. Any advice would be appreciated. I think I only want to take two of them.

Any other advice about the hike would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Weathersealing a non-weathersealed lens / Dust Donut

Great people of CR,

I know that there is more to weathersealing a lens than just the rubber gasket, but I thought it might be a good idea to gasket my non-WS glass if it was a non-permanent thing (i.e. considering resale).

So I found this kickstarter:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/77243737/dust-donuttm-add-a-weather-seal-to-the-mount-of-an?ref=live

It looks like it was funded, but I don't see a storefront on Google anywhere. Did he just make a production run to cover the backers and then shut down? It would be a pity if so.

Any thoughts in general on the upsides/downsides of such an idea? Does anyone have one of these?

Thanks,
A

Nikon D610 yes D600 minor upgrade!

http://www.techradar.com/news/photography-video-capture/cameras/nikon-announces-slightly-improved-d610-1187348

And Calumet just emailed them advertised for Pre-Order.

Seems a bit strange to release a small upgrade just a year on, but sales and feedback must of been pretty bad if they felt the need to do so. But at least they are doing something and churning out decent new cameras very quickly at the moment. Plus not afraid that this may well be open to critism that they themselves are admitting that the D600 was sub par for the market/ at release.
But this is quite refreshing and open.. eh Canon?!!

Could this be the way ahead now to release minor upgrades at say the same initial price point to offer the latest improvements for those wishing to keep on the tech front?

Makes me imagine a 5D 3.1 with a nicer sensor - 1 stop more DR , less banding / noise and maybe 30MP.
And keep everything else with it!

(Then the proper Big MP can still be a separate beast!)

What do you think?, are Nikon on the right road or have they gone nuts and are going for glory or bust with all their recent products that get great reviews but probably don't sell quite the numbers conservative canon does?!!

Big question sir " 50 mm. VS 55 mm."

Just the News from CR :
" New Zeiss 55 f/1.4 Distagon
We’re told that the new Zeiss 55 f/1.4 will be part of the new “Otus” family and will appear for preorder some time in the next 24 hours. This lens is the start of a new family of lenses from Zeiss that will set the gold standard of optical quality.

The price for this new lens is apparently $4000 and is manual focus. The lens will be available on November 11, 2013."

The Question that I want to have the answer before spend money with non-sense of my stupid Idea.

I already have Sigma 50 mm F/ 1.4 DG, EX, HSM, for 10 months and very happy about this Lens quality/ AF speed, and Goods Price = Less than 500 US Dollars in that time-Yes, Include the beautiful Lens bag too.
The Question ? , Sir, Do I need This Zeiss 55 mm F/ 1.4 = $ 4,000, And Manual Focus ( I am Old man and do not have a perfected eyes)---OR Canon EF 50 mm. F/ 1.2 L USM = $ 1,619 for perfected AF ., Great Bokeh and the Best Background Blur.

OR , forget about this two Lenses, because I already have Sigma 50 mm.

Thanks you, Sir, for the Answers.

Is ff metering more aggressive than crop?

I've recently bought the 6d and expected the metering to be just the same as on the 60d - but that doesn't seem to be the case(?), though both use the same 63-zone metering system.

To me, the ff metering system seems to be more aggressive, and I'm more often running into blown highlights than with my 60d - esp. since the amount of highlights "hidden" in the raw and only accessible in postprocessing is much smaller on the 6d.

This is an important difference, because esp. with flash & ettl you're really depending on the camera metering system, and I see me using -ec, spot/partial metering, exposure & flash lock more often than with the 60d where eval metering and "shoot away" usually worked.

Question: Is my impression correct and ff/crop metering is different, or have I've gotten it wrong during my rather short time with the 60d?
