AF Cases 5d3/1dX

Hi guys!

I was just wondering what is your favorite (custom) Af cases for shooting people in all types of situations.

The reason I ask is that I have the 1dx and 200 f2.0 L and use it for a lot of people shots, from people doing sports, portraits, kids playing etc. And I find it to be very difficult to get the faces sharp, really annoying. Tracking isn't the best to say the least, and this combo should be superb imo.

I have tried pretty much any case, even the ones that doesn't make sense for a situation, Case 6 for a still sitting portrait for example, just to try. I have tried some custom cases, but I still have too many missed shots with this combo especially. I have also tried the face detection with auto point selection and found (as expected) highly unreliable, with this dof, you can't miss with even a couple of centimeters. I know the dof is very thin and yes it is properly calibrated.

Please feel free to share all of your favorite cases with both the 5d3 and 1dx when it comes to ANY shooting scenario. I think we can learn a lot from each other thinking of the combined experience here at CR.

Thanks!

Why you shouldn't be worried about DR

This is from a Nikon fanboy (and I still prefer Nikon but shoot both)

1) HDR mode is available if you "must have" that DR
2) use CPL filter boosts DR quite a lot out door.
3) 100% of time people fail to tell which pictures from which brands.
4) Great DR camera shouldn't be an excuse for bad shooting technique

Nikon is better in DR but camera body is the last thing you should worry about.
Above all it is your skill that determine the outcome.

So please stop rampaging the dxo threat about DR and DXO score.

P.S.
I found Canon color accuracy seems better than Nikon

Canon 70D RAW Samples vs Nikon D7100 Compared

After seeing all the mess in the DXO thread I did a little digging and found a test done by someone who has both on a Chinese forum. If anyone wants to see it, here it is: http://newbbs.fengniao.com/3038020.html

Obviously this is in Chinese so I had to interpret, to my knowledge it has build, ISO performance, AF performance(this is very subjective), and shadow/highlight recovery. I have to say after seeing the shadow and highlight recovery of the 70D, I am somewhat disappointed.

Canon 6D or 70D dilemma - please help

Hi,

I have a dilemma as to which Canon camera to purchase and would be grateful for any advice.

I currently have a 650D which I use for holidays, indoor product photography, close ups/macros, landscapes, architectural (trips to stately homes, etc), portraits (family) and occasionally air shows. I sometimes shoot video but haven't been impressed with the results so far. I own a 35mm f/2 IS USM and 40mm STM and plan to get either a 100mm f/2.8L Macro or 24-70 f/4L if Canon can fix the focus shifting issue.

I have read many posts on this site and others but I am in a quandary - do I get the 6D which seems to be a better fit as far as still photography or the newer 70D which may offer more accurate focusing (19 cross type v. 1) and the articulated screen which I have often used on my 650D.

I sometimes feel frustrated that my 650D's frame buffer runs out too quickly (such as photographing the Red Arrows at Airbourne) and it lacks dynamic range for landscapes leaving the sky blue and the ground seemingly dark, but it is not clear if the 70D's marginal improvement in dynamic range reported by DxO will make a noticeable difference in actual use. I also find the 650D's viewfinder (previously owned a 40D) just too small for accurate manual focusing.

Thanks in advance.

New 200-400/1.4x review - or 11,799 reasons to cry

For those interested there is a new review that just came out on the 200-400 - http://www.ronmartblog.com/2013/08/review-canon-ef-200-400mm-f4l-is-usm.html

I have to admit that I was very skeptical and while I do still think it is extremely expensive, I have to admit that the price seems in line at least with Canon's other big teles. I recently traveled for a few weeks to Australia with my 400/5.6 and even given the size this would have been my most used lens there.

My only quib with the review is I disagree that you really need a 1D-X to properly use this lens. I have always been a believe that glass is more important than camera bodies and I am sure I could make great use of this lens on my 5D3. I currently have no desire to buy either the 1D-X or the 6D but will evaluate the 1D-X's and 5D3's successors.

Now I just have to convince my wife on this lens... :)

600EX-RT + 580EX II Questions

I've decided to (hopefully) simplify life some. I've had a 580EX II for some time which I occasionally use on camera, but most often use as a slave to a Qflash Trio, if at all. The Quantum units communicate wirelessly (RF), produce really nice light, recharge immediately, and can fire repeatedly without overheating. But they're a bit more than what I need at this point. So they're going. I've ordered two 600EX-RT's.

I hate to use a big flash as just a master/fill but choices are limited. The ST-E3-RT seems poorly designed with the info and controls at the top, not where my eyes would be, and without focus assist. A 90EX can be a master, but has no RF, it's fairly weak, and has some other undesirable shortcomings. On my wish list is something like my old 220EX as an RF master. It has more than enough power for on camera fill, proper focus assist, and reasonable recycle time.

So my question really is, can I use a mixture of optical and RF slaves with a 600EX-RT master, specifically my existing 580EX II and a 600EX-RT as slaves to a 600EX-RT? Or must I choose optical or RF?

I think ultimately I will wait for the ST-E3-RT Mark II (or ST-E4, whatever they'll call it) which hopefully will address some of the shortcomings of the current model. I may or may not sell the 580EX II depending on how it performs with the other two, and get a third 600EX-RT, but not right away.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

24-70/2.8 mkII & 70-200/2.8 mk II & 50/1.8 @ 5DIII & 7D comparison & combination

So the last several weeks went like this:

Sold 600D and a 24-105L. Got a 5D3. Got a new 70-200/2.8L (non-IS). Missed the 24-105, so decided to but the 24-70/2.8II. Sold the 70-200/2.8L by thinking that a 135/2 will be much better. Bought 24-70/2.8II. Tested some 135/2 - not long enough, bought a used 70-200/2.8L (mine was already sold) in a so-so condition. Decided to get a used 7D as a second body an bought one (today). I burned about 200$ with all those bad decisions on the 70-200 - lesson learned.

Now my setup is 5D3 + 24-70/2.8II and 7D + 70-200/2.8 and I will be testing it out over the weekend at several gigs.
Some people say this setup is amazingly stupid, some say it's the best for any kind of shooting. I would like to hear your takes on this. One thing I know so far - it's heavy (I am 67kg, 180cm).

The second thing i realized that the 7D's ISO is "crappy", the AF is slow (in low light) and it feels like a toy - the whole sentence only, if you compare it to the 5D3 side by side (what a surprise /sarcasm).

So, since I've got some free time tonight I decided to make a short comparison between the two bodies, lenses (at 70mm) and also compare the 50/1.8 that I have lying around with the 24-70/2.8II at 50 mil. Since I didn't have a model (lying around) I used a bottle of shampoo in my bathroom.

Distance: 1,5m (24-70) - 1,7m (70-200) in order to get the same frame. Sharpness set to Canon default (3).
Tripod & 10sec timer. Each frame repeated 3 times.

I let you decide if the 7D can compete against the 5D3 in terms of sharpness, quality etc - it seems that my 24-70 needs some AFMA adjustment, LV is sharper then PF @50mm - am I seeing this correctly?

Would you sell a 500mm f/4 IS for a 300mm 2.8?

So having read the forum for a couple of years, finally have a question that needs your experienced opinions.

I had a 7D, and used it with my 500mm f/4.0 IS for shooting small birds (and big ones if they came along).
The combination was great, but I was never really happy with the IQ of the 7D.
However, with my other photography such as street and equine, I always felt that the images from the 7D were lacking a natural look, especially as I was cropping to 100-150%.

So I bought a 5DmkII, and I was blown away by the IQ, I loved it.
By the time the 5dMkIII had been out for a year, I'd stopped using the 7D, and had also swung towards the equine photography.

So, I now only have a 5D mkIII which I use 90% of the time with a 70-20mm 2.8 mkII, and a 500mm sat in the corner.
I have a 2x mkIII which I bought instead of the 100-400 to use with the 70-200, and it's awesome.

Should I exchange my 500mm for the 300mm 2.8 mkII, would the 300mm with the 2x mkIII give my IQ that near to the 500mm f/4? Considering it would be just for occasional use.

Such a hard decision, especially as I no longer have the crop factor of the 7D. If only the 7D mkII would appear with an 18Mp 1.3x crop sensor...... (similar to the 1D mkIV)

Opinions please.

Advice sought on Cropped Frame Wide Lens

This thread have evolved from a previous thread, http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=16624.0

I have a Canon 7D and my wife has a 600D. We have on both the EF-S 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS lenses and find these pretty satisfactory general walk around lens (with the obvious compromise for the large focal length range).

I have been thinking of late of getting our first "L" lens. As enthusiast rather than professional photographers without a endless budget and the price of these lenses, we really don't want to waste money getting the wrong lens.

Our interests in photography are (not in any particular order):
1. Landscape and travel
2. Nature, animal, birds (not macro)
3. People (not portrait)

With this in mind I recently hired a EF 17-40mm f4.0L USM (as a potential landscape lens) but was underwhelmed when I compared it side-by-side with our 18-200mm using equivalent focal lengths and exposures. I was expecting this L lens (Canon's cheapest and most popular, so I read) to stand head and shoulders above the 18-200mm in image quality, color saturation, brightness, etc. But my (admittedly) amateur eye could not see the difference.

So my thinking now of an ultra wide EF-S lens to compliment our existing lenses. So thinking of either:

10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM; or
17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

I am leaning towards the 10-22m as this gives us a range we don't current have and would make a nice ultra wide lense on 7D and 600D for landscape.

Once again seeking comments, views and experiences especially from members who have used this lens.

Storage and life of batteries

This must have been discussed in the past, but it is so general and there are always new members so it is worth raising. I gather from the internet that Li ion batteries are best stored at about 40% charge, where they degrade about 3x more slowly than fully charged, and should not be allowed to drain. It's not very convenient to have half-charged batteries when you have to grab extra ones for a shoot. So do people actually store them half-charged?

What prompted this is that I just checked the LP-E6 left half charged and very rarely used in my 7D. It read in the menu 46% charged but the previous two green bars for Recharge Performance had dropped to a single red.

So, is it bad practice to leave the battery in a camera for long periods unused? Does the red bar mean that it is now shot (I'll find out later myself this weekend)?

A Big Lens Announcement in September? [CR1]

<p><strong>Something in an L?

</strong>We’re told that there are tentative plans for a lens announcement sometime in late September and it would be a “big deal”.</p>
<p>No mention of what lens, and Canon doesn’t hold press events just for lenses.</p>
<p>We’re trying to find out more, as this came from a first time source. I expect the usual suspects will be talked about.</p>

Shipping film

I don't see a 'film' section on here, so I'll post this here for now. My question is about shipping film for processing in the mail. Where I live, it's fairly hot right now (low to mid 90's F). In case you haven't seen the news Ilford just opened up a processing lab in San Clemente, CA, a thousand miles or so from me. If I send them film for processing, it's going to be 3-4 days (at least) in that kind of heat, which I understand is no bueno for film. Even if I overnight it (and doubling the expense of processing), it's going to be sitting on a hot tarmac for at least a short while. So...do I just put my rolls ready for processing in the freezer and wait for cooler temps? I've probably just answered my own question. I was just wondering what others do who send out their film. Thanks in advance.

6d Highest Usable Iso?

I am currently on a 60d and unhappy with the ISO performance. Even at ISO 100 there is noise, but anything above ISO 800 is particularly unacceptable to me. Some of that noise can be cleaned up in Lightroom, but I'd like a camera with a less noisy sensor.

I was hoping the 70d would be a nice step up, but that doesn't really seem to be the case. So now I am considering a refurbished 6d.

For those 6d owners out there, what is the highest usable ISO setting for you?

Thanks for your comments in advance.

Wildlife Photography , To flash or not?

Do you use flashes for wildlife photography? ,

Personally I am still not sure if I should purchase a flash, during the day it can be really handy, but at night I wonder if I disturb the animals?, even the ones who can 'handle' it.

What are your thoughts on the use of flash?

Btw, what is the max shutter speed you can use?, if the flash sync speed is 1/200th, does this mean you can only use up to 1/200th of a second shutter speed with flash?, or is that for when the flash is not attached to the camera but triggered wireless ?

canon 6d or 7d ?

Hey all, what would you think as a backup camera, the 6d or 7d.
Does anyone know if the GPS in the 6d works on remote locations (gps devices can sometimes struggle getting alocation).

Most reviews I could find were kind of bashing the 6d autofocus performance.
I am only interested in It's center point performance, if it's capable of focussing with decent speed and accuracy and able to track subjects when I keep the point in them.

Any thoughts on the combo's would be much appreciated,

Goal: wildlife
Primary body : 1dmkiv in case of the 6d, or 5dIII in case of the 7d
lenses : 70-200 / 300
tc's : 1.4/2.0

This is what happens when you buy a Canon lens in China :))

SARCASM

Only in China ^^ Nikon is loosing market share and it's seems thats their only way to get their brand near people, cause no-one would buy their crappy goods anyway ^^

I was thinking since I've got the opportunity, I write a short review:
Nikon - It performed very well, but the corners were a bit soft. The body was shaking too and i had a (yellow) problem focusing on the Canon, even stopped down. Yet I am glad to hear that your HQ is pushing into a new direction. Hopefully, it will be better than your digital goods.

PS: I am available for further tests, Nikon.

Regards, Georgi Grancharov

nikon

... yeah thats my facebook. Chinas biggest consumer good chain (Sunning) has no Canon bags - and won't have, because that's how ridiculously Nikon's PR plays in China (Seller told me) - Amazing.

Anyway, I really feel scared with that bag in my house. Actually, when I think about my other thread (the unsharp 24-70) - now I finally know why! It's f$c*ing cursed by the bag! Seriously.

Field sports: Canon 300 2.8 IS vs Sigma 120-300 OS Sport

Looking to spend some extra cash for a field sports lens for the fall. Unfortunately the 400 2.8 is outside of my price range. Not looking to spend anything more than 4k at this point.

Right now I am shooting with:
7D
17-55 2.8 IS
70-200 2.8 IS II
85 1.8

At some point, I will probably be adding a second body, most likely a 5D Mark III since that will help me out quite a bit for basketball come winter time. But I don't think I can swing spending the money for the lens AND the body right now.

So for now, I am just looking to pick up a field sports lens for use with my 7D.

I am conflicted between the legendary Canon 300 2.8 IS and the newly released Sigma 120-300 2.8 OS Sport.

Since I will most likely only have one body for this fall, I'm leaning more towards the Sigma for it's zoom range, but I haven't seen too many sample sports images from that lens or even heard much about it from sports shooters. The slower AF from the Sigma worries me a little bit. IQ I'm also not too sure on. Plus it weighs significantly more as well.

I'm not necessarily looking for a concrete answer, but I would love if some who are more experienced with these lenses would offer their thoughts about this decision.
