Chipworks report says Canon and Nikon trade sensor fill-rate for video features

"Canon and Nikon released the 1D X and D4 FF DSLRs, respectively, both of which sacrificed fill factor to add transistors serving as floating diffusion (FD) node switches. These switches add the flexibility to perform charge-domain binning for video modes."

I'm not trying to restart the flameware against video in our cameras, but I do want to say that I am very disappointed that two flagship stills cameras are sacrificing stills performance for video.

Cheap sports camera

Hi guys,

I'm doing some sports photography. I love the 1Ds Mark2, which i possess, but 4 fps is way too little. So i'm looking for a replacement in sports photography. I like pro bodies, so i'm thinking about getting a used 1D Mark2 or a used 1Ds Mark2n. What do you think about that? I don't need high MPs, only a fast camera. Is it wasted money and i should go for the 7D? Or is it worth to give it a shot?

Thanks for your opinion

600ex as main lights

I have one 600ex and i am seriously considering getting another plus the st-e3. This would be used mainly for event photography and some portraits. Wedding parties etc. Are these bright enough to be used for the formal portraits and adding ambient light at a wedding? I feel like they are pretty powerful but every review i see they are using three on each light stand. I dont have 2500 to use on new speedlights.
I looking at getting stands and maybe using the gary fong for both since they are simple diffuser that works well. I know it wont be the same as having studio strobes but i also dont want to haul those around and have to set them up each time...
Any one have this type of setup?

How do I know what thread sizes are of my lens?

I've got:

- 50mm F1.8 Canon
- 18-55mm standard Canon lens
- 100mm Canon IS Macro lens

What are the thread sizes of these lenses?
Where is this documented? (I did a google search but couldn't find the answers - I didn't spend a lot of time searching though)
I recently purchased a macro light that I can use with my macro lens because it doesn't have the right size adapter

Thanks

Coverting 6D video for iMovie

Forgive my lack of knowledge...I am attempting to put together a montage of clips filmed with a 6D and 24-105L. I have imported to LR4...but am unable to easily export into iMovie due to the file type.

I have been using a trial of a video converter but I am hoping there is a free alternative out there. I don't need anything fancy.

How can I take my 6D clips and format them for .mov ?

Thanks.

A new wide angle

We’re told that Sigma almost has a 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens ready. An announcement could come this year or early next year. The build quality and performance will rival that of the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM we’re told. The lens will be a little more expensive, but Sigma hopes to keep it under $1000 USD.

We were also told that Sigma is planning something “big” for Photokina 2014 a year from now. It was hinted that it could be new super telephoto lenses.

From Tamron USA

Expanded Tamron repair technician and customer service staff at Tamron USA’s Long Island Headquarters makes the dream a reality

August 14, 2013, Commack, N.Y.- Tamron USA announced that the company now offers 3-business day repair service turnaround for photographic lenses. This achievement works to alleviate customer concerns that when they send in a product for repair service, they may be left without that product for some time. Now, all lenses received in our system by noon EST are estimated the same day and moved onto the next stage. Lenses under warranty (Tamron USA offers a 6-year limited warranty on its photographic lenses) are repaired and shipped back to the customer within three business days. Out of warranty lenses are repaired and shipped back within three business days of the customer’s approval of the repair estimate.

“We are thrilled here at Tamron USA to supply our customers with a 3-business day turnaround time,” stated Pat Simonetti, Director Technical & Customer Service/Distribution. “With the support of our parent company, we were able to take the necessary action to build upon our staff and make this dream a reality. This accomplishment was and continues to be a real team endeavor. I truly appreciate the efforts from all of those involved in this project,” said Simonetti.

The Background

Customers may anguish about sending a lens in for repair, expecting that they could be without their favorite or workhorse lens for some time. Tamron Co., Ltd. recognized this and challenged its subsidiaries to reach a standard 3-business day turnaround service to make customers feel more confident that, in the unlikely event their lens requires service, they would not be long without it. “By speeding up the repair turnaround time, we can alleviate our customers’ anxiety about repairs and thereby increase their satisfaction of and confidence in Tamron products,” stated Tak Inoue, President and CEO of Tamron USA. Tamron USA took dramatic steps over the past year to increase the number of repair technicians that work on photographic lenses as well as customer service staff. Internal systems were changed to accommodate the inspection of lenses received by noon of each day and route the lenses to the proper technician for expert repair. Repaired lenses are then given top priority in the distribution center to ensure the product is on its way back to the customer within the established guidelines.

Well done. I hope they add those shots to all "good" cams they tested.

By the way: There is an old bank note in the lower part of the picture. It let me smile when I recognised, that this old bank note came from Austria in the mid of Europe. I wonder, how this came to the USA and jonied dpreview´s chart. ;-)

TAMRON AIMING FOR 3 DAY SERVICE TURN-AROUND

Their latest lenses are IQ competitive with the best OEM and the performance/cost ratio is very good too.

I've never experienced tardy service from Canon Canada but if Tamron's trying to make 3 day turn-around service on their lenses that's gonna be a bit irksome to the likes of Canon and Nikon who will only expedite service for their paid-up pro members.

5D3 for video-Need advice for shooting a pub crawl, evening, lrg. organized event

Hi Folks,

Ok, I need some advice.

I have this event I'm likely going to be doing video for. It is to set a world record for "the largest gathering of brides, in wedding dresses"...and then a pub crawl afterwards.

This is in Sept, starts at 4pm....goes through evening.

So, my main thought as the evening goes on....what do do about lights? and with me on foot for quite a bit of distance...I can't carry a ton of equipment by myself, and I'm likely to be a one man band here.

I have my manfroto monopod with fluid head...I'll be bringing that.

I have my sling bag...and figure I can carry my 70-200mm f/2.8.....my 17-40mm f/4. For ultrawides I'll maybe squeeze in for only a couple shots...my rokinon 14mm.

But I have no portable lights. Should I invest in some sort of small, portable LED lights?

I've not worked out any logistics....but mainly the record setting part is at one site about 4pm...once that is done, they all walk to various bars that are sponsoring this event, so, I'll need to follow along with them and shoot along the way.

This is in about a month and I just kinda found out I was volunteered for this, so, starting to sweat a bit early and try to figure out how best to try to pull this off.

I've got 2x batteries...I'll be buying at least a 3rd one, maybe 2 more. I need at least a couple more CF cards I'm thinking, I have about 4 x 32GB ones, along with a bunch of 32GB sd cards, but I don't trust those for video.

Thoughts, suggestions? I'm trying to see if I can get a friend to help me out a bit...but I'm planning now for it to just be me.

Thanks in advance!!!

6D logical upgrade from 7D?

Hello all, I'm considering an upgrade to the 6D and I've scoured the web for info on the body but can't find solid info on what concerns me: the outer AF points. Everyone raves about the center being more sensitive than apparently any other Canon body (or other manufacturers too apparently), but no one ever comments on the outer points or compares them to anything else. I've checked about a dozen youtube reviews, and read a couple threads on this site as well as a pair of other photography forums....no info on anything other than the center point.

A little bit of background info:
I've been a Nikon user since '05 when I got my D50, progressed through a variety of bodies (D100, 200, 300, 7000) before my D7000 for whatever reason started backfocusing horribly out of the blue. Had a high shutter count (~170k) and was already tired of the wonky AF in low light so I figured I'd sell it and wait until something else came along (have a NEX6 I used for fun in the meantime). D600 seemed perfect, except it shared the same AF system as the D7K, so I decided to switch over to Canon (I've long been a fan of the lens lineup). I'm currently using a 7D I got a month ago for what I think was a pretty good deal ($700 for body, grip, 2 batteries, and friend gave me her 70-200 f4), but I've known for a while that I've wanted to go full frame for the low light benefits and of course wider FOV. Whatever decision I plan to keep the 7D as a backup/inclement weather/location/beater body.

The 5DIII seems amazing, but a bit out of my price range...and if I were to save up as much I'd probably be tempted to go back to Nikon for the DR and resolution of the D800.

This leaves the 6D (or a 5DII, but from what I'm told and have read its AF outer points suck) so I'm wondering: while the center AF point is apparently amazing, can anyone compare the 6D to the 7D? I actually like the AF on the 7D, definite improvement over the Nikon D7K. I rarely ever use the center point, probably only 10% of the time at most. I tend to shoot in portrait orientation with the far right (outermost) point selected so that it lines up with the subjects eyes when in portrait. Does anyone have any insight as to the performance of these other points? Are they the same as the 5DII? Better? Same as the 7D? Better? Thanks for any insight!

Which lenses to buy for filming

Hey everyone. This is my second thread in this amazing forum. I am a newbie to the world of films and I just bought me a Canon 600D/T3i camera which came with 18-55mm lens which are pretty blind for filming. I asked people around here and they suggested to buy Tiffen 77mm Variable ND-Filter http://www.amazon.com/Tiffen-77VND-VARIABLE-FILTER-Camera/dp/B004Z55VP0/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1376463889&sr=1-1&keywords=Tiffen+77mm+Variable+ND-Filter is this it ?

Plus, what lenses do you guys recommend me to buy. My budget for the lenses is 100-150 USD. I will also buy an external microphone.

EDIT: My budget is 350 USD.

Yet another call for travel lens advice

Hi all
I have read good comments about the Tamron 24-70 and am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the Tamron 28-300.

I have a 5D_III, Canon 16-35 II, 24-105 and 70-200L 2.8 IS.

I am leaving on a 6 week holiday in Nov from Perth Australia to Venice, then cruising the Med to Turkey & Miami via St Thomas and a few islands then 2 weeks in England.

I am interested in Landscape, old buildings inside & out anything else I see including hopefully the Duxford aircraft museum.

I am worried about the weight of the 24-105 and esp 70-200 so was thinking of just taking the 16-35 for wide angle and buying the Tamron 28-300 as a travelling lens. I have tried the Canon 28-300, great lens but heavy like the 70-200.

I would appreciate your thoughts and advice.

C100 Default Hour Meter

I decided to go ahead and purchase the C100 from BH last week. I noticed that it has a no return policy. Okay, fine. When I got the camcorder, first thing I checked was the hour meter. It said total of 2 hours on it. Thinking this was a used one, I got an exchange from BH without any problem. The second one came and it says the same thing. I was curious and called up Canon. The rep spoke to the engineer and confirmed that the C100 usually comes with a default of 2 hours on the meter. They said because of hours accumulation for testing.

Is this true for all who had bought the C100 new? Or has anyone noticed this?

Very curious. Thanks.

Keep Canon 17-40mm F/4 Vs. Tokina 16-28 F/2.8 Vs. 16-35mm F/2.8

During the summer, my career as a photographer blossomed. I'm seventeen years old, shot two magazine covers, sold some very large (over six feet) prints, had one of my photos go viral and photographed a wedding. In all I earned a couple of grand but most of that I would like to put into savings for during and after college. I shoot on a Canon 5D MKII and do a lot of landscapes. For my landscape lens, I use a 17-40mm F/4 L and sometimes my 50mm, 105mm and 200mm for high quality panoramas. I haven't been using my 17-40 very much do to the fact it is extremely soft and has huge amounts of CA in the corners. Below I will include a shot from the middle edge at F/8. I have been considering upgrading to a new lens as most of my work is landscapes and my 17-40 is most definitely my weakest lens with a slow aperture and soft corners even stopped way down. I need a lens that is sharp through out the image stopped down, I'm fine with soft edges wide open, I'm not shooting landscapes at F/4 and would not be shooting them at F/2.8. I would like there to be as little amount of coma as possible so that I could use the lens for astrophotography instead of my 50mm 1.8.
Canon only really has the 16-35mm which is very expensive and sounds like it is not much sharper then the 17-40mm in the corners. Tokina's 16-28 sounds like a great lens for a great price but i would like to hear what others think of it. I have heard that Tokina doesn't have the best quality control.

This and that

A few people have written in to confirm that Canon is exploring the possibilities of entering into the medium format segment.

We’re told nothing is imminent, but things could change quickly in the next few months. How long this has been going on is unknown, but it does sound like it’s a real possibility.

No one has confirmed or denied that Phase One is the medium format company in question.

Over at NL, they received an outright dismissal to the concept. However, a second source said Canon is going to be all in, and will announce in a big way some time in 2014.

Printing Images

Hi all!

I have a Canon 5D Mk 3 that I got from Canon refurbished and the CLP, pretty sweet! I took a bunch of Raw pictures with my nifty 50 in NYC this past weekend and edited them in LightRoom 4.

I was wondering a few things:

1. How big can I get them printed without losing much quality
2. Where do you go online/in person (NY area) to get them printed/framed

I'd like to get anywhere from large to enourmous prints of my photos framed and hung on my wall, etc.

Thanks!!!

From The-Digital-Picture

Bryan at TDP has completed his review of the highly anticipated Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens. His only knocks against it are the lack of OS (which isn’t a huge deal) and the limited range on APS-C. However, the uniqueness and performance of this lens should overcome both of those negatives if you’re looking for something in that range.

Says Bryan

“It is easy to overlook any focal length range deficiencies when getting an f/1.8 max aperture available over the entire focal length range. Not only is this the widest aperture zoom lens, but it is also the widest aperture 18mm lens. Full frame sensor camera owners have typically enjoyed about 1 stop of high ISO noise benefit and background blurring capability over APS-C/1.5x/1.6x format sensor camera owners. But, full frame camera owners do not have a zoom lens wider than f/2.8 available to them. The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM “Art” Lens is a bit of an equalizer in this comparison.”‘

What lenses would you bring for this travel-trip?

Hi all Canon-shooters! :)

I'm about to do a sort of a travel dream in october. Will be traveling to these places:
- Dubai
- Sydney
- Great barrier reef (compact with under water housing)
- New Zeeland

I'm going to bring a Canon 5D mk3 aswell as my compact camera.
Now I'm thinking of what lenses I should bring and if there is any lens that I should get for a trip like this.

Currently I have:
- Sigma 15mm fish eye
- Canon 16-35/2.8
- Canon 35/1.4
- Canon 50/1.8
- Canon 70-200/2.8 IS II
- Canon 85/1.2
- Canon 100/2.8 IS Macro
- Canon 135/2
- Canon 1.4x extender

When I want abroad to shoot last time I brought my 16-35, 50 and 135mm. it's a little complicated to switch lenses all the time when the sun is about to set.
That's why I've thought of getting perhaps the 24-105/4 to bring instead of only primes.

Since I'm going to shoot a lot of pictures with big tall buildings in Dubai I'm thinking that a Tilt Shift should be a good investment that I can continue to use later on. I've tried that 24 TS-E, but I'm thinking of the 17mm.

Just to clarify: I'm doing this trip mostly to shoot pictures for my portfolio and to get new clients, not so much tourist-shooting. So I'm aiming for pictures that clients (magazines, hotels, travel agency, real estates etc) will like and not so much for my own vacation album.

What whould you bring on a trip like this?
I'm thankful for all input! :)

Best regards
Fredrik
