Lightroom 5 Maps shows offline - worked previously

Maps module is coming up "Offline" - my other internet access/applications are working fine, my download speed is 85 mbps, upload is running normally at 10 mbps - running on mac mini with Mountain Lion. Anyone have any experience fixing this or have suggestions ? I know I have gps data on the files, but when I click from coordinates or activate the Maps module, it shows offline ?

Thanks for any ideas.

Northwest Trek

Has any one been to Northwest Trek? I did not see any images when I searched.

The wife and I have reservations for the photo tour next weekend, and I've been debating about which cameras and lenses to bring. They take out windows and doors on the tram, and stop frequently to allow for shots. There is also a walking tour which is more like a conventional zoo. The park is part of the City of Tacoma parks department. I've been wanting to go for a few years, but its necessary to signup for the photo tour well in advance, so I finally remembered to signup early this year.

My wife will likely take her 1G X, and I'll take my 5D MK III. I'll take my 100-400mmL, my 70-200mm 2.8 MK II, my 24-70L, and my 16-35mmL. Maybe my 100L too?
I hate to pack so much stuff, and I'm even thinking of taking my 580 EX II and better beamer, since I hear that the animals are sometimes hiding in the shade. That's going to make a big load to carry, maybe I need to bring my big roll around case :)

I will also put my 40D in as a second camera.

I'll bring my monopod, and Pol filters, but I don't like to use filters unless I really have to.

I'll start packing up to see what I can actually carry in my favorite bag.

Meanwhile, any advice from someone who's been there is welcome.

Two malfunctions on a new 5DIII

Received a week ago the 5DIII body I ordered recently (plus battery grip and 24-70 f/2.8 II lens). It is an amazing combo and have had great time playing with it, but encountered two annoying malfunctions:

1) The auto rotate does not work - some of the images at the beginning were rotating, but now none does. The setting is properly selected (auto rotate in both camera and computer).

2) The electronic level froze - it was working at the beginning (although I did not check whether it was functioning correctly), but now it froze so I can't use it either on the display or in the view finder.

Have any of you encountered these problems and if so, did you manage to resolve them (without sending the camera back to the shop or to Canon service)?

The 10 Commandments of CR

Here's a light hearted topic for the weekend.

It's a great community on CR - generally. The only forum I bother with, and I think it is the same for plenty of others.
But there are some real pet topics, so here's a tongue-in-cheek, spoof 10 Commandments adhered to by the CR community.

I've got two, others can finish it. The more amusing the better.

1. Thou shalt purchase a 135L and pay homage to it daily.

2. Thou shalt only ever shoot in full RAW ( even for facebook ) .........................

EOS 7D Mark II Information [CR2]

Canon EOS 7D Mark II

We’re told there is zero chance of a 7D Mark II in 2013. The camera is currently slated for release in the second half of 2014. We’re told the final specifications of the camera are far from complete, but it will have the same 20.2mp sensor as the EOS 70D. As well as the Dual Pixel AF and built-in GPS. At present, it will not have wifi, though this could change for the final product.

This all seems very plausible. I would think Canon wants to see what kind of success they have with the revamped xxD line. The 70D looks like an APS-C winner spec wise, we’ll have to wait and see how people feel about it in the real world.

The same person also said a new lower end camera would be released in the first half of 2014. Nothing was mentioned about the fabled big megapixel camera that Canon is working on.

Using (Fill) Flash

So I've been doing most if not all of my photography over the last 7 years without using a flash. I like ambient light and hate what an external flash does to the weight balance of my camera body.

I'm pretty happy with most of the results but it's time to get more out of my photography and start using fill-flash. The goal however is to preserve as much ambient light as possible; I dislike it when a flash has obviously been used to get a picture.

So my question is: Do you have any recommendations I can start out with? What conditions would typically require which settings?

Note that I would like to use it for general photography because I do very little portraiture.

FWIW I have a Metz 48 AF-1 with a STO-FEN Omni Bounce. I'm not immediately interested in getting more flash gear or reflective screens etc.

Thanks all!

Another crappy question about 5D mk2 iso performance...

So I bought a 5Dii as a back up camera for weddings but I've never shot with it as I don't trust the ISO performance. I'm spoilt with the 5Diii by the fact I trust it to 3200 and not having that much grain or sharpness lost. I used to shoot weddings 90% with a 50mm 1.4 and just swap to the 24-105 when I was doing groups. but now I have a 35mm and I'm comfortable doing 99% of the day with that, just putting the wide on for the biiiig groups but I kinda miss the detail shots I'd be able to do with the 50 a little. I swapped it now and again to make sure I got what I needed last wedding but I wish I had slightly more of people done on the 50. The 35mm is ace for the ceremony BTW, if anyone's reading this far...

Anyway, the crux of the matter is that I want to double cam on my next wedding, 50mm on the 5Dii and 35mm on the 5Diii... I'm not using flash and shooting at 2.2, what ISO can I feasibly get away with shooting at on a 5Dii with out making a mess of everything?

P.S. no crappy "shoot at what you need to to get the shot" answers. just what I can actually trust the camera to deliver professional standard photography to discerning customers.

5DIII AF area selection (sports)

Which AF area mode do you guys use when shooting sports? I have read a number of Canon reps and professional sports shooters saying they use "Auto selection:61 pt AF". Granted most of these are with the 1DX, but would that not be the case with the 5DIII? The only time I tried this mode was at AMA Supercross in Anaheim, CA. More times than not the AF system seemed to lock focus on the padded blocks used to line the track rather than the rider or motorcycle. Is there some setting that needs to go along with the 61 pt AF mode to get a higher pct of keepers due to focus lock? It seems like the only modes I get predictable results are "Expand AF area: +" and "Expand AF area: Surround".

Does the 5DIII have face detection like on the 1DX?

Maybe buying outside the UK is ethical after all...

I'm in the middle of persuading myself to buy a 500mm f4 v2 and am looking around at offers in the UK - support our shopkeepers and all that.

I'd rented the lens last weekend and was talking to the bloke about getting one and wondered what his best price would be. He said his sale price is actually less than trade plus VAT and therefore he makes a loss on each one! He makes his money on sundry items like straps and filters etc.

Therefore rather than cost a retailer money, I see no problem in ordering from, say, Digital Rev.

I haven't ordered it yet so, until then, discuss.

(Papers are marked out of 25. Marks deducted for sloppy writing or insisting we pay more in the UK than we do already.)

Canon 24-70mm 2.8 II , error?

Today I used my new 24-70 for only the 3rd time and the camera now won't recognise the lens, aperture shows up as "00" and no focusing. There was no issues the first 2 times I used it. Tried it on 2 different body's (5d3 & 1DMK1V), changed batteries etc and still no hope. It will switch back and forth though, it will work for 3 photos then stop for 3 and at times won't work for ages. Any body with some idea's?

Question about TDP's sample crops

Hopefully one of you jolly fine fellows can answer a question that has been bugging me for a while!?

When using The Digital Pictures' sample crops to compare lens performance against other lenses or the same lens used on a crop and full frame body, for example, it astounds me how soft the crop body rendition is in comparison. The below link illustrates my question:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=687&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=3&API=3&LensComp=687&CameraComp=736&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=3&APIComp=3

The 70-200 2.8L IS II is obviously one of Canon's legendary lenses, but why does the crop crop (crop body crop!)- which is a 60D in this case- look so much softer than the full frame 1Ds III? Is it just that the 60D has a very soft output? I chose f5.6 as the aperture for both bodies so there should be no diffraction issues but the comparison is much the same at other apertures anyway. Even more surprising in the above comparison is how soft the corners are on the 60D crops compared to the 1Ds III, which surprises me because the crop body is not using the lens's full image circle. The first time I used TDP's comparison was with ultrawide zooms so I just figured that it was the fact that the full frame ultra wides were performing better than a crop equivalent (think EF-S 10-22 on crop compared against 17-40L on full frame, but when I started looking at other lenses I saw it was pretty much always the same- the FF crops were visibly sharper with the same lens. Any thoughts?

5D Mark iii Clean HDMI Output Problem

So I updated my 5D to the latest firmware about a month ago. Recently I got the chance to try it out. So I tried it with a normal monitor using HDMI and I couldn't get rid of the boxes, or in other words the 'Clean' HDMI I wanted. I searched the internet about how to fix this. I found out I had to change a couple setting in the menu. So I changed the HDMI mirroring option to "Mirroring" and adjusted the HDMI frame rate to auto. However, the boxes would just not go away.

So next I connected my 5D to my SmallHD AC7 monitor. However this time, an image would appear for a couple seconds then the screen on the monitor goes blue. I tried adjusting the setting on my monitor but I just can't get and ouput. I tried connecting the camera to the other monitor again but the boxes just wont go away.

I checked the firmware and it shows that its updated to the latest firmware (1.2.1). What do you think the problem is? Do you think I should re-update my Camera? How Could I fix this? :(

Thanks!

First pic of Sigma 24-70 F/2 posted

Just saw this at CW:
http://www.canonwatch.com/rumor-first-picture-of-sigma-24-70mm-f2-lens-leaked/

I am not speaking to the legitimacy of a low-res photo. It may be fake.

BUT, presuming it is real, I've superimposed known glass in PS, in this case, the 24-70 F/2.8L II.

My very crude PS ruler work yields that the new Sigma 24-70 F/2 comes out to:

1.56x as a long as a 24-70 II (at the 24mm end)
1.20x the filter diameter as the 24-70 II (or, roughly 98mm on the Sigma)

And we could also start guessing if we're looking at an internally focusing lens here. It may not telescope beyond the length shown in the picture, like a Canon 70-200.

Mad speculation is fun sometimes. :D

Cost of the conversion will range between $80 to $250, plus shipping costs, depending on the focal length of the lens. All lenses will be shipped to Sigma’s US subsidiary in New York, and updated, calibrated and optimized for the new camera system at Sigma’s factory in Aizu, Japan. All lenses that undergo the Mount Conversion Service will be covered under warranty for six months following the update. Gear Advice foe and awesome Greece trip

Hello

Me and one of my friends are going to go to Greece on 5th of August for almost 1 month. I am planing to visit Santorini (if any of you have been on an awesome island not far from Santorini, let me know), Athens, Meteora, and Thessaloniki. Also if you guys know other places, tell me.

So far I packed 5D3 17-40 with a polarizer and a 8 stop ND filter, 50 1.4, 70-200 2.8 and 1 600EXRT and ST3 trigger. Also I will bring a GoPro Hero 1 and a Manfrotto tripod.

For renting I want a 24 TS-E a fisheye, eather the canon 15 2.8 or the canon 8-15. A GoPro Hero 3 Black, and a quadrotor for changing the perspective.

I will have with me a mac 11 inch to see in some cases if I nailed the focus and two 750 HDD, one main and one back up.
Mostly I am shooting cityscape, landscape, architecture, nature, and I am planing to shot some milky way shots at the islands and at Meteora.

What else should I rent /bring?

Thank you!

Nate
