Thrown in deep waters... throw me buoys pls..

In just after two weeks I am going to a major wildlife lodge in Africa in the middle of migration - their busy season - for 10 days of Safari in exchange for teaching the staff and clients photography. I have faked my way as a photographer so far. Now I am in the deep end.
How do you think I should handle the situation? The staff there is expert and the the clients rich and from all over the world.
What do I teach them? How do I teach them? Am so nervous.
Things which come to my mind are: Back focus, exposure compensation, servo focus, selecting focus points, raw v/s jpeg. Pls pls add to this list with hints on teaching and techniques. THX

Camera body advice

So my rebel xsi has met an unfortunate demise and I'm looking for advice on a replacement. I only have between 400 to $600 ish (cdn) to spend on a new (to me) body. I have the standard kit lens, 35 2.0, 50 1.8, and 85 1.8. I shoot primarily people with a smattering of whatever else catches my eye. I'm looking for opinions on a replacement body. 5dc, t3i, 50d or anything else in that price range. I would like to know what body any of you would choose (my list is just an example and not my specific selection). Not having video is not a big deal for me. I'm not blowing my images up huge so a high MP count isn't my priority. For me image quality is most important, ie great low iso files, reasonable high iso (I occasionally shoot some sports indoors and find the xsi wanting at iso 1600). Also, getting the shot in focus, especially with the fast primes. Afma would be a nice feature. Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there to get others opinions, especially if you've had experience with multiple cameras in that price range.

Base Plates for 5D3, 1DX -- seeking advice?

Colleagues: I am accustomed to keeping a steel base plate on my gear (example: the Really Right Stuff plate for the 5D2), both for protection and also because I can vigorously screw in my Black Rapid attachment. I don't mind the extra weight. I seek advice re. options for protective base plates for the 1Dx and 5D3. (I know RRS makes a plate for the 5D3 but not for the 1DX.) They must have female fitting for BR attachment, and be very durable--steel preferred over aluminum; titanium best of all. M-Plate? Acra? Anything else? Thank you for your time.

Addendum--Thanks, winglet and neuroanatomist. The Kirk plate (I did not know of them) may be what I want. I prefer steel to aluminum, but RRS doesn;t make an equivalent plate for the 1Dx as they do for the 5D3. Not certain what neuroanatomist means by lug and locktite, but Ishall research this. Thanks again.

Canon 24 70 2.8 L version I or Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC

Dear friends,

I have just ordered a 6D body (refurbished) and have around $1K left to buy a lens for it. I am seriously consider to buy a 24-70 range F2.8 zoom lens and cannot decide on which one of the above is better in term of IQ and value. A 3 yrs' old used Canon L is asking on the Craigslist for 1K to 1.2K and I will be able to buy a grey market Tamron for around $900.

Which one should I choose ? Please help.

Canon UK boasts ‘number one’ spot but demand dips worldwide

" Canon sold 19% fewer digital cameras worldwide in the second quarter of 2013, compared to the same period last year – with demand for interchangeable-lens cameras falling 4%. However, Canon’s global imaging division sales revenue climbed 4.4% and the firm says it held the number-one spot for photo and video in the UK for the first half of 2013.
Canon 5D MKIII front

Sales of Canon compact cameras fell 26% worldwide from April-June 2013 in volume terms (year-on-year) but demand for the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS 6D DSLRs continued to grow and the EOS 700D ‘proved popular' in Japan over the three months.

‘As for digital compact cameras, sales volume declined from the previous year due to the market slowdown and increasing popularity of smartphones,' states Canon.

The firm says this was ‘despite efforts to increase sales through the introduction of new products such as the PowerShot SX280 HS – equipped with a high-magnification zoom lens that exceeds the capabilities of lenses offered by smartphones'.

Total camera sales revenue rose 0.8%, while Canon's inkjet printer sales jumped 17.3% despite a 3% drop in units sold.

On the future of its camera business, Canon points to a ‘sense of a slowdown in China and Europe', adding that its future priority will be on ‘profitability'.

Operating profit at Canon's Imaging System Business Unit fell 17.5% for the first six months of 2013, compared to a year earlier.

In a statement accompanying its latest business results, the company adds: ‘Demand for interchangeable-lens digital cameras is expected to continue growing, owing to an expanded user base in developed countries along with market growth in emerging countries.'

In the UK, meanwhile, Canon reports that it came top in photo and video sales for the six months to June, in both volume and value terms, and was also 'number one' in compact cameras.

According to figures Canon says it received from market analysts GfK – which GfK would not confirm when approached by AP yesterday – Canon led the market in digital interchangeable-lens cameras and compacts for the month of June.

Separately, news agency Reuters reports that Canon has cut its interchangeable-lens camera sales target to 9 million, from 9.2 million previously. However, Canon UK was not able to confirm this to AP."

High humidity destination: gear precautions

I am going on a trip to Costa Rica this september and am a little bit worried about my gear. I've got good insurance but that won't protect me from not being able to take pictures because of broken gear.

Rain forest especially sounds scary, but I'll have to decide day by day what I am going to do and if I should bring my gear or not.

My lenses are not weather sealed (35L 85L 135L) and body is 5dIII. I've got a backup eos-m with 22mm prime.

- I'd like to hear some experience with such environments and precautions I can take to decrease the change on damage to my gear.
- What about switching lenses, is the plan to do it inside a plastic bag safe, any other ideas?
- Any places where I should just accept to not bring the camera (thats ok, photos are not my primary objective ;)).
- Any other tips?

So far I've heard:
- Gear in the hotel, either no airco or put gear in bathroom at night.
- Get plastic bags to put stuff in
- Get Silica Gel bags (for anti-moist)

'Revolutionary' Dual Pixel AF Explained

Dual Pixel CMOS AF will change —High Image Quality” the basic assumptions about Digital SLRs

Canon USA has posted a PDF explaining the “revolutionary” Dual Pixel AF technology.

Introduction

This is not just a new technology. It is a revolution that will significantly expand the possibilities of DSLR cameras.

“The correct way to take photos is by looking through an optical viewfinder and shooting”

“Live View is a subsidiary function, inferior to the optical viewfinder”

“The DSLR’s movie mode is so difficult, as to be usable only by a professional”

Dual Pixel CMOS AF is a new technology that will cast aside these assumptions. The entire surface of the sensor is lined with pixels composed of two photodiodes each, and the image plane phase-difference detection AF focuses using the phase-difference of the two parallax images.

opinion on price of used camera needed

howdy,
today I came across a used 40d on craigslist in my area for $200. The poster says that the flash doesn't work, but everything else is working fine. I was considering making an offer. I know this is an old camera, but ppl here seems to agree that the 40d does a good job. I'm not worried about the flash. If you were in my shoes, would you consider buying this?

ps. I'm currently using a t1i.

Sigma 35mm 1.4 lens chicken...

So today I went down to the bank, extended my overdraft and purchased the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens on the interweb for £620 next day delivery. All being well it should be delivered before noon tomorrow (friday)

The reason I bought it is that I want to shoot a wedding on saturday with it :D

obviously I'm going to play with it all friday afternoon and evening (I'm using a 5Diii) but I probably wont work out all the little quirks... anyone that has the lens, is there anything I need to be aware of?

I normally shoot 90% of the day with a 50mm 1.4 set at f2.2ish but I'm guessing the 35mm 1.4 set at 2.2 will be a little more forgiving on the DOF and a little less bokeh?

Has anyone had problems with focussing and needed a little AFMA???

I have the 28mm 1.8 too but that's a little too wide for me on a full frame when doing environmental portraiture. I find I make the odd little mistake with regards to chopping off of the extremities of limbs with the 50mm when it's all action go and I don't really have time to get the legs going for some proper framing.

so yeah, any oddities with this little beast??

An Update on the 75+mp Camera in the Wild

It exists, but will it come to market?

We have confirmed that a test camera with around 80mp is definitely in the wild. A few things to note about the camera. It’s apparently in an EOS-1 body and has a larger than 3.2″ LCD on the back. The camera also apparently shoots at a very high frame rate.

What we can’t confirm is if this test mule is actually going to be a consumer product. We imagine there are various sensors currently out there. We’re told via a third party that Canon could announce this new EOS-1 before the end of 2013, however it would not be shipping until 2014.

More to come…

Portrait Shoot

Not something I normally shoot, but I've found it unexpectedly enojyable lately, especially when I've been stuck in a bit of rut. Here are some portraits from the weekend, playing around with some ideas.

Refurbished 5D Mark ii or New Mark iii..???

Hi fellow photos,

So a few weeks ago I asked everyone whether to invest in a 2nd body or new lens (getting into wedding photography & assisting currently as 3rd/2nd shooter)...& everyone suggested 2nd body. So now I'm in a dilemma w/which body to buy. I missed the opportunity in getting the mark iii for $2550 last week through BigValueInc. So now, should I:

1) get a refurbished mark ii for $1400
Or
2) wait for another deal sometime this yr to get the mark iii (hoping to get it under $3k)?

I will eventually upgrade to a mark iii but w/the extra $ saved (by getting the refurb.mark ii now) I can use it towards a new lens.

Currently shooting w/:
5D mark ii
Sigma 35mm 1.4
Canon 50mm 1.8 ii
Canon 24-105 (will sell & use $ to get 24-70 2.8 ii along w/$ 'saved' from refurbished mark ii over mark iii. If I don't sell this lens, I would probably get 85mm 1.2 as next lens)
Canon 70/-200 2.8 ii

Please provide some insight & ur thinking behind it. Thx!!!

From The-Digital-Picture

Bryan over at TDP has completed his review of the new Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM lens.

Bryan, just like a friend of mine that is sponsored by Sigma in Canada, was pleasantly surprised about how much they like the lens. I keep hearing the build quality, optical quality and focal range are very useful on a day-to-day basis.

From Bryan

“It is hard not to like a great looking lens with a 120-300mm focal length range in a non-extending, solidly built body that also feels great – and delivers image quality that leaves most other zoom lenses wanting even at this lens’ wide max f/2.8 aperture. I like the direction Sigma has been going with their recent lenses and I think they have another hit with the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens.”
