</strong>The Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L non-IS is set to be discontinued officially some time in 2013. As much as I think there is still a market for this lens with sports & wedding photographers with pro bodies with great high ISO performance, there’s no information saying Canon will do a version II of this lens.</p>
<p>In case you were wondering, the EF 70-200 f/4L is remaining current with no plans for a discontinuation.</p>

Anyone else see this article?
It makes it seem that current sensors are out-resolving lenses which I dont believe is the case.

Hi guys,
I recently bought a 50L. I ran through FoCal 3-4 times. The results I got are very similar on all runs.

At f1.2, FoCal showed my 50L is best at -5 and sharpness is 753. I looked at my 24-70 f2.8 II, at f2.8 the sharpness is over 1000. Even my 16-35 II, at f2.8 the sharpness is above 800.

Questions:
1. It's normal for that 50L sharpness to be below 800 due to large aperture?

2. At f1.2, what is the sharpness on your 50L through FoCal?

Hi everyone.
Just watched this :

Canon EOS 6D vs 5D Mark III Hands-on Comparison

and 5:30 sec into the clip it's said that "[you] can't rely on [5d] mark 3 screen [for focusing manually]... [as it] only shows DOF accurately to about f/2.5"

Does that mean that it is possible that after bringing something into focus using live view (at f/1.4) it may actually not be in focus on the actual photo??? Does anybody know anything more about this phenomenon?

"I can focus the 6D's center point on a subject with reasonable contrast down until autoexposure gives me a setting of 160 at 10 seconds and f/2.8 (really dark) with the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM Lens mounted (note that the 6D's metering range spec is listed at EV 1-20). The Canon EOS 1D X's center point could not focus on the same subject with the same lens mounted. Note that the 6D focuses very slowly under these dismal lighting conditions - but locking slowly is far better than failing to lock.

I'm having very good success with the Canon EOS 6D's center AF point. And this is again the AF point I am using most frequently on this camera. It properly and accurately locks onto subjects as I would expect. "

Here is a fun little topic, yesterdayI caught my friend and he caught me saying 2.8 and F4.

It's a bit weird, most photographers call regular # aperatures Fx, and all aperatures with a decimal, just the #?

We all know that the 24-70 v. 24-105 was a very hard decision.

24-70
----------
-2.8 > 4

24-105
----------
-IS> no IS
- +35mm

Both these lenses were similar in price, and each had their benefits, but both were ~ in sharpness.

Canon has come close by making the 24-70 2.8 ii and the 24-70 f4, one has 2.8, and one has IS, but there is a pretty big difference in price while both apparently have equivalent prices, similar glass, and each has an expensive feature.

What is next?

Hi, I've got a friend in law enforcement who is asking me for a recommendation for lens/camera combo for surveillance. I naturally thought to extend the question to you all!

What would you recommend as a set-up for surveillance? My friend won't be able to spend a ton of time learning the ins and outs of it and he's not interested in photography as an art. He will need to use it time to time at night and won't be using a flash (obviously).

Your thoughts?

P.S. Budget doesn't necessarily matter. Unless you are concerned about the fact that our taxes will be footing the bill...

Need again some help:
My new 6D suffers from an very slow AF function. I tried with 70-200 2.8 II and 100mm 2.8L. It takes a lot of time to get the picture sharp. Only the Center AF point is semi-fast, double the time of my old Cam.
When I choose an decentral AF-point, it takes more than 2 seconds in an good light situation. Both lenses work well on my old Camera.
I performed an reset, but nothing happened.

Send it back (own it now for 1 week), or get it repaired?

Thru Custom Controls, I set such that selection of AF points can be controlled directly using 8-direction multi-controller, without having to press AF selection button.

But when I am composing my shots, I press multi-controller, but nothing happen.
In lock settings, multi-controller is uncheck. Even my unlock switch is set to unlocked.

Does everybody experience this, or is my 6D is faulty one?

so I was shooting the other day with studio lights at 125th around f8 I think which is pretty standard for studio lights/model set up only the model was moving around a bit so I upped shutter speed to 200th/sec. I didn't notice on the back of the camera (5Diii) at the time but there seems to be a shadow cast from what I can only assume is the shutter or mirror.

I've been shooting for quite a number of years and I've never noticeably come across this. Going out and shooting In daylight at 800th/sec seems no problem with a 50mm 1.4 wide open. Is this just a phenomenon when shooting with flash over 160th/sec at high f-stops and I should just learn not to do it or is there something more sinister at work?

Just bought my first FF, and I am torn on my third L lens to purchase. As of now I have three lens: 50mm f/1.2, 24-70mm f/2.8, and a 100mm 2.8 macro.

As of now, my love seems to be anything dealing with long exposures.

What to do, what to do?!?!

I am a sucker for sharpness, and don't mind pretending like my credit card is fake money, and then crying about it once I get bill.

I'm renting the 14mm 2.8 ii but unfortunately haven't been able to test it to my liking due to the continuous rain..

I guess what I'm asking is..what L series would you get that's under 24mm focal range?

I'm aware this question has probably been answered multiple times on here, but I'd rather someone on here repeat themselves over the same passion I possess than watch my girlfriend roll her eyes again with disinterest.

I mostly shoot video, but also do photography. I'm contemplating whether or not to sell my old Nikon AI-S prime lenses (35,50,85,105,135) as well as a few others, and put that money towards a good 24-70 and 70-200. I'd be sacrificing 1.4 for 2.8 but since I'm also looking to get the 5D Mark III, low light is greatly improved.

Just wondering if there are any reasons not to do this.

This weekend I hired the fantastic 24-70mm F2.8 L Mk ii lens after my trusty 24-105mm F4 lens finally died last week.

Anyway, this evening I got the chance to run a very bried test to compare it against my 70-200mm F2.8 L IS (Mk i) lens and my Sigma 50mm F1.4 lens, with everything shot at F2.8. I only checked centre sharpness in this test, but having used it to shoot a wedding yesterday I am mighty impressed.

Comparison images are on my blog and there is no question the 24-70mm Mk ii wins hands down! Now to find a means to purchase a copy of this lens... although I would happily do with the 135mm F2 first I think!
