Help me choose 40 v 50(1.4)

Thanks to the information available in the forum, Pros and Cons of both are clear to me. But I still have a couple of questions I hope you can help me figure out:

1. wide open on full frame, how much I will notice the difference in terms of DOF considering the relatively short focal lenght of both?

2. how much I will notice the difference in term of sharpness (not necessarily wide open)?

Many thanks

Does anyone here shoot stock images like iStockPhoto? If so, advice? Thoughts?

HI all,

A couple weeks ago, I saw an interesting class on Creative Live...about making money with micro stock, like with iStockPhoto.

I was curious if anyone on the list here sold photos through this, or other stock image sites...if so, what are you general thoughts?

If you would, could you give advice to someone who would just be starting..how to make you first images acceptable for the initial application to become a contributor to the site?

What site do you like the best and why? Is there a money difference between them? Do you just do stock photos or have you done video too?

Just looking both for comments on the game, and any advice you would be willing to part with to a noob that is thinking it might be fun to try.

I'm sure that the big money was done a few years ago early on, but I'd just be thrilled to sell a couple photos, and if it turned out to be a little beer money, well it would justify all the tax write offs I do with my company on the photo equipment so far....etc.

Thanks in advance,

cayenne

Can't upload photos

I am perplexed. After posting successfully a couple of days ago, I can't upload photos to the forum for about 48 hours. I can post words but no pictures. I tried JPEG all less that 4096 MB (quite a bit smaller, in fact) using multiple pictures and cannot get them to load. I have tried both Firefox and IE. I've disabled and re-enabled cookies, pop-up blockers And turned my antivirus software on and off. When I load an attachment and click post, I see a message "Waiting for Canon Rumors" but then the page goes blank dn nothing ha been posted. I know this is a photo forum and not a computer forum, but I'd appreciate any ideas from out there.

I am not a geek (sorry) but I am fairly adept at using a PC and making adjustments to the OS and the device. FWIW, I've been using a Win7 Pro with 8GB mem and have lot's of disk space.

Thanks. I've seen something like this posted here before but could not find that thread.

Is my 430EX dead?

I was out earlier taking some pics and my 430 EX flash just stopped working! I was using it in manual mode at 1/4 power to help freeze the movement on some Dragonflies I was photographing. However after about 6 or 7 exposures it just would not flash. I have tried 3 sets of batteries with no joy. It seems to power up OK and the red "Pilot" light quickly shows it is ready but then it will not fire on or off the camera, even pressing the "Pilot" button will not trigger it in Manual or ETTL mode. If I put my ear next to the flash gun I can hear a VERY faint beeping at a rate of about 1 beep per second.
Has anybody out there any idea of what might be wrong? Although not a new flash it has been very rarely used so I wouldn't have thought it would be the tube - but I have virtually no idea on flash guns so any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Good FL lenses?

So, looks like I'll be getting a Canon FT QL from my friends father that was found while cleaning out stuff. Might need some work, not sure, but I don't plan on putting a lot of money towards fixing it up. If it can be done cheap, then I'm off shooting with it :)

So, assuming it's more or less working for little to nothing, what FL lenses would it be worth my while to keep my eye out for? Has a 50/1.8, and supposedly a "wide angle" which I'm guessing is 28mm, but don't know.

Monoprice camera accessories

I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts (or better, experiences) about Monoprice's new (and apparently expanding) line of camera accessories. http://www.monoprice.com/products/department.asp?c_id=117

I have a very good impression of Monoprice generally and their customer service in particular. I don't think I'm going to be tempted by a $7 CPL, but their reflectors look nice, the center-pinch lens caps look as good as anyone else's, and I am thinking about being in the market for a tripod with a ball head.

I'm not currently in the market for a USB 3.0 card reader, but that's right up Monoprice's traditional alley, so I imagine it's hard to go too wrong on those for $11.

Anyway, I just thought I'd get some thoughts from those in the know.

Thanks in advance.

New to the forum!

Hi, my name is Adam Small. I started shooting about two and a half years ago, when I got my first camera (Canon 7D). I originally bought the camera because I was going to school for graphic design and thought it would help me in the creative process. Ever since photography has consumed my life. I mainly shoot action sports and product photography and have been perusing a prefesional career In the field for about a year.

Hopefully we can all help each other learn more about this commonality we all love.
Here are acouple of my photos! Plz give me any feedback you might have!

Will Mirrorless Cameras Make Our Current DSLR Equipment Obsolete?

I was talking to one of my friend last night and ask him is he is going get the Mark III. He said "It forgoes the SLR system that is outdated which allows for a much more compact body. Imagine having the functionality and image quality of a 5D mark III but with the size and weight of a compact point n shoot. "

That might be true in the future but I don't think mirrorless will replace our DSLR. Can you imagine we (professional wedding.....etc photographers all carrying a tiny small camera for the photo shoot LOL.

Professionals will also always need a veiwing system that allows them to still frame up shots when doing night photographer or heavy ND filter shooting. This is more difficult on a mirrorless with current ISO ratings because the image is shown on an LCD screen where as with a standard DSLR you're seeing the image the way your eye sees it.

Canon wants to make everyone a filmmaker

I believe that when Canon first introduced video in the 5DII they were just throwing in a nice little extra feature that didn't cost them anything. I also believe they had no idea how revolutionary it would be and what a demand it would create.

It was a classic case of "disruptive technology" and to their credit Canon quickly saw the potential and has been on a drive to capitalize on that potential more than any other manufacturer.

With the 70D they've taken another giant leap forward in video capabilities for the non-professional and aspiring videographer market. In fact, the 70D seems to offer as many or more upgrades for video use as it does for stills.

Of course it is a smart move. The professional stills market is shrinking. About the only market left is weddings and even that requires videos as well as stills.

In contrast, the internet video market is the fastest growing media market today and it is becoming more professional all the time. Children born today will grow up expecting to be able to watch an endless supply of content on their personal tablets and Canon wants to be making the cameras that most of the content is filmed on.

How do you feel about this? React.

Buy 7D now If I won't be able to afford 7D mkii

Hi

I'm 15 and I have enough money to get the 7D

Before you say "Get a 1100D , it's great for beginners ", Just to clarify I am not a beginner! I have been using my Dad's 1D mkii + 20D for the past two years .

His equipment is old ,so I want to get my own

I have lenses so I just want a body

With the 7D mkii coming out soon it will just be too much money for me

I chose the 7D because I love the 8FPS on the 1D mkii ,it has a good focusing system alike the 1D mkii,The high iso(I sometimes shoot night sky timelapses),Live view and the large buffer size

I don't need any of those creative filter stuff or a touch screen .

So Is it worthwhile buying the 7D now if I will not be able to afford 7Dmkii?

Is it a no brainer ?

Thanks

70D or wait for 7D MK II?

As a 7D owner, am curious for input on if I should wait for a 7D Mk II or just go for the 70D. The 70D does have some interesting features, especially the highly touted AF system, but I worry if I upgrade now the 7D Mk II may be far superior with the same AF system, dual DiGiC 5s, and probably even higher FPS shooting (as a sports photographer that's important!). While I can wait, I can't wait forever. Probably til the end of the year? Anyone know/think they know when the 7D Mk II will come out?? Should I wait?

A Revolution in Autofocus Unlocks the Potential of Live View

Dual Pixel CMOS AF is a groundbreaking technology from Canon that unlocks the potential └of Live View, changing forever the way users will capture video and still images with a DSLR camera. Dual Pixel CMOS AF powers incredibly smooth and consistent autofocus – like that └of a camcorder – so focus transitions are natural and subjects remain locked in even as they move. It also enables phenomenally accurate and faster-than-ever autofocus through an LCD monitor, allowing the user to realize the unique compositional freedom of angle that Live View is capable of providing. And the compatibility of Dual Pixel CMOS AF with 103* Canon EF lenses empowers the user with exceptional optical tools for nearly limitless creative options. All these remarkable advances are possible thanks to an innovative technological design. For the first time in an EOS camera, the individual pixels on the CMOS sensor are capable of both capturing light and performing phase-difference detection autofocus. This revolutionary leap in Live View autofocus performance cements Live View shooting as an outstanding complement to traditional viewfinder shooting, unleashing wonderful new possibilities for dynamic, creative, high quality video and still capture in more situations than ever before.

Canon EOS 70D Announced

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2013/07/canon-eos-70d-announced/"></g:plusone>

London, UK, 2 July 2013
– Canon today unveils an outstanding new addition to its world-famous EOS series – the EOS 70D. Designed for aspiring enthusiast photographers, the EOS 70D is the ideal camera for anyone looking to take their photography to the next level. It combines completely new, world-first Canon imaging technology with powerful, creative and wireless sharing features – delivering a responsive, all-purpose camera ideal for capturing the moment with stunning images and Full HD video.

Capture the moment with stills and Full HD movies

The EOS 70D features a new 20.2 MP APS-C CMOS sensor, designed and manufactured by Canon. It’s the first Digital SLR in the world to feature ground-breaking Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, which delivers smooth and accurate autofocus (AF) when shooting Full HD movies and fast AF acquisition when shooting in Live View mode. Paired with the 14-bit DIGIC 5+ processor and 19-point all cross-type AF System, the EOS 70D captures incredible, full resolution images at up to 7 frames per second, with up to 65 JPEG or 16 RAW images in a single burst*. Additionally, a native ISO range of ISO 100-12800 enables photographers to shoot in lower light conditions and use faster shutter speeds whilst retaining high image quality.

“I was incredibly impressed with how many new technologies the EOS 70D packs into one body, and how versatile it is,” said Brutus Östling, Canon Ambassador. “The EOS 70D is the perfect camera for anyone that wants to develop their photography skills. Not only is it suited to shooting people, landscapes and action easily and in outstanding quality, but also filming subjects in Full HD with focus speeds I never thought would be possible. The camera proved itself in the most challenging of circumstances, and had a range of new-generation technologies to comfortably solve any test I threw at it – especially with the new Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. It really takes DSLR shooting and filmmaking to a whole new level.”

Canon’s new Dual Pixel CMOS AF provides swift AF performance when shooting in Live View mode and smooth accurate focus for Full HD movies. It makes it easy for users to take their next step with movies, enabling them to keep moving subjects in sharp focus and create professional-looking pull-focus effects. The technology utilises advanced CMOS architecture, allowing two photodiodes to be mounted within each pixel, both of which can be read independently to achieve autofocus, or together for image capture, with maximum image quality at all times.

An advanced AF system for stills includes 19 cross-type AF points spread across the frame, providing high speed, accurate AF – ideal for tracking sports and wildlife subjects as they move within the frame. The AF system is customisable, allowing photographers to adapt to the subject they’re shooting. AF points can be used individually, together in small groups, or as a wide active area for more unpredictable subjects. A dedicated AF area selection button, positioned conveniently next to the shutter release, enables quick switching between modes, without having to take the camera away from the eye.

Expertly designed for professional control

The EOS 70D’s powerful specification is packed into an expertly-engineered body that’s designed for comfort and swift operation. The Intelligent Viewfinder, with 98 per cent frame coverage and 0.95x magnification, allows photographers to comfortably frame their images and visualise settings via the electronic overlay. Conveniently-placed controls provide instant access to the most frequently used settings, such as ISO, AF mode selection and metering, so users can quickly change settings and concentrate on capturing the moment.

A 7.7cm (3.0”) Vari-angle Clear View LCD II Touch screen with a sharp 1,040k dot resolution is ideal for video shooting, or composing images from unusual and creative angles. The screen is a capacitive type, which supports a series of multi-touch gestures including swiping and pinch-zooming – perfect for navigating menus, amending settings or flicking through images.

Clever connectivity for easy control and instant sharing

The EOS 70D is the latest EOS model to feature integrated Wi-Fi, providing the freedom to remotely control the camera, as well as share images. Using Wi-Fi connectivity, users can connect to the EOS Remote app and control a wide range of image settings, including ISO and exposure, as well as focus and release the shutter. Photographers can also remotely use Live View mode, as well as review and rate their images.

Instant creativity unleashed

The EOS 70D features a host of creative modes to make capturing unique images easy. In-camera HDR removes the challenges of shooting in tricky, high contrast situations, merging three exposures into one that captures more detail in both the shadow and highlight areas. With multiple-exposure mode, photographers can shoot and combine up to nine exposures into a single image, or use a range of Creative Filters to instantly change the style and look of their shot.

Experimenting with creative off-camera flash is easy, thanks to the Integrated Speedlite transmitter, which provides in-camera control of multiple Canon Speedlite EX flash units.

Creative Full HD Movies

Alongside beautiful stills, the EOS 70D allows photographers to create high quality movies with ease. Full HD (1920 x 1080p) resolution video can be captured with a choice of selectable frame rates, including 30, 25 or 24fps, and 60 and 50fps at 720p, and a range of compression options for post-editing and sharing. Thanks to new Dual Pixel CMOS AF, Movie Servo AF mode tracks subjects as they move, or even as shots are recomposed, ensuring they’re always in focus. Alternatively, users can select different focus areas over 80 per cent of the frame** simply by tapping the touch-screen, even when recording – ensuring that movies stay sharp and clear if a subject moves or the user changes the composition of a shot.

Videographers can also enjoy stereo sound using the internal microphone, or enhance audio with the in-built external microphone input terminal. Full control over settings such as aperture and ISO is also possible within manual mode, giving users greater freedom as their skills develop.

EOS 70D – key features:

20.2 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5+

19 point cross-type AF System and 7 fps shooting

Dual Pixel CMOS AF

Instant sharing and remote control with Wi-Fi

ISO 12800 (H:25600)

Vari-angle 7.7cm ClearView II LCD touch screen

Intelligent viewfinder

Full-HD movies

*UHS-I card required for maximum burst duration
