1DX JPEG Quality Setting

I just got my 1DX yesterday and noticed the JPEG quality setting was set to 8 by default. I have been shooting with a 5D3 for over a year now and of course that option is not on the 5D3. I started to compare some JPEGs of the 1DX and the 5D3 and noticed that the 1DX jpegs (quality 10) have a little larger file size than the 5D3s even thought the 1DX has less MPs so I am assuming that the 5D3 compresses the jpegs more. Am I correct? Also anyone see any reason why I would need to adjust my JPEG quality down from 10 assuming I am not worried about the little extra file size? Now I don't want to start a JPEG vs RAW war but I was just curious if anyone knew more about it and why that option is not on the 5D3.

What does shutter speed control when shooting video?

I'm just starting to explore the video function of my 5D3 and I was hoping for a little clarification. My understanding is that (as with film) the ISO controls light sensitivity and aperture controls the diameter of the lens opening. However I can't seem to wrap my brain around the shutter speed's function in relation to video. With the camera's mirror being locked up what then does shutter speed change? My first thought was frames per second but I doubt that's right.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Apologies for Problems with NIKON IMAGE SPACE

Just saw this when I went to sign in my Nikon Image Space account

http://info.nikonimagespace.com/trouble_info/00027/?lang=en_US

Thank you for using “NIKON IMAGE SPACE”.

It has come to our attention that new accounts for 43 users created between 12:10 pm, Thursday, June 6, and 10:00 pm, Tuesday, June 11, 2013 (all dates/times in Japan Standard Time) can be accessed by another 43 users, and vice versa. This means that accounts for a total of 86 users can each be accessed by two users—the actual account holder and one other user. Random account access by various users is not possible. This is the result of a problem with the “NIKON IMAGE SPACE” system.

After examining the system, we found evidence that the images and membership information (name, nickname, e-mail address, telephone number) of 32 of those users had been accessed in some way without the user's knowledge.

Immediately after this problem was detected, we identified the cause, implemented measures to prevent recurrence, and confirmed that it had not occurred with more than the 32 users identified.

However, to prevent the situation from becoming any worse, all of the original 86 users, including the 32 indicated above, affected by these problems remain unable to log-in to their accounts.

In addition to this announcement, we have e-mailed affected users individually with a report of the problems and our sincerest apologies. We will continue to assist affected users in good faith.

*Worldwide distribution of 32 affected users
8 in Japan, 11 in the U.S., 3 in Italy, 2 each in Spain, Germany, and Australia,
1 each in the U.K., France, Belgium, and Malaysia

At Nikon, we have worked continuously to strengthen and ensure the security of personal information. Therefore, we take problems like this one very seriously. We will perform a complete inspection of the “NIKON IMAGE SPACE” system to prevent them from happening again and to restore reliability.

We sincerely apologize for any trouble, concern, or worry these system problems have caused users of “NIKON IMAGE SPACE”.

Details

1. Cause
────────────────────────────────────────────
There were problems with the “NIKON IMAGE SPACE” internal program updated on June 6, 2013 (Thursday). Usually, with new membership registration, a unique number, used for internal management of accounts, is assigned to each member. Over the span of several days, however, several of the same numbers were assigned to two new members.
2. Response
────────────────────────────────────────────
Immediately after this problem was detected, we identified the cause, implemented measures to prevent recurrence, and confirmed that it had not occurred with more than the 32 users identified. Finally, the internal program was corrected at 6:30 pm on June 14, 2013 (Friday) to ensure that these unique internal management numbers are not assigned to more than one user or account.
3. Measures to prevent recurrence
────────────────────────────────────────────
Nikon takes this problem very seriously indeed. Not only will a revision of system design and quality standards be implemented, but the monitoring system and items monitored to ensure consistency of data will be reinforced to prevent future inconsistencies and restore reliability.

We hope that you will continue to use “NIKON IMAGE SPACE”.

Any recommendations for photography workshops/lessons?

So my girlfriend got me a Canon 5D mark iii last Christmas and while its a great camera, feel a little overwhelmed with it since I haven't taken a photo class since college. And yes, there are a million resources online and in books, but I always like hands-on learning directly from the teacher.

So I was wondering if there are any workshops or photographers who provide lessons. Does not matter the location since I love to travel but preferably away from the Midwest (born and raised in Illinois).

I'm into landscape, cityscape, street, night, long exposure, and HDR, but I really like anything related to photography.

Thanks in advance

to TS-E or not to TS-E?

Hi all,

I'm toying with the idea of buying the 24mm TS-E. I shoot at 24mm a lot, love shooting landscapes and buildings and like to learn new things/challenge myself. However, it isn't cheep and i have a few concerns. Basically the lack of AF (not much manual experience) and IS (I drink a lot of coffee)... I don't always like lugging around my tripod, which I feel is needed to truly get the most out of a TS-E, and lets face it, for the price that is what i want to do!

Any advice for me on this issue? Experience and suggestions welcome!

Additional info - there is nowhere local i can rent it. :)

A wise lens upgrade?

My current lens lineup only consists of the 24-105 f/4L and 50 1.8.

I have an offer on the table to sell my 24-105 for about $720. I love this lens but I have been looking to go a little wider for landscapes and also a little longer for portrait work. With Canon's current refurbished pricing I could get both the 17-40 f/4L and 70-200 (non-IS) f/4L for about $900.

This means I would achieve all my goals of having a wider lens, longer lens, and I would still have the 50 to fill the difference all for only about $200 out of pocket. I am curious if anybody has enough experience with any of these lenses to confirm that it would be a worthwhile deal for me or if I should hang onto the 24-105 and stick with my current setup.

A bit about what I do in the NYT.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/20/technology/personaltech/home-3-d-printers-to-make-things-you-need-or-just-like.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

3d printing and such.

Few things I have made for personal use: DSLR steady cam and a hood/filter holder set for the 17mm TS-E (pic is just the hood) light switch guards out of glow in the dark plastic and a cold shoe adaptor to use the RSS QR system for my flash bits and pieces. I do rapid prototyping on a number of machines (objet 500 Connext and a HASS Super mini vertical mill) for various products.

How the heck do I use a flash with this...?

So I've recently started shooting with an old Pre-WWII Mamiya Six II/III (10x10mm waist viewfinder), it's great, but I'm trying to figure out how to use a flash with it (probably get an older, small pocketable flash). There's no pc-sync port that I see. You can find some images at Camera-Wiki, and the specific model I have has this specific lens/shutter/mount. Note, this is not mine, but I can provide images of my specific camera if needed. So, anyone shot with this style back (way back) in the day? Or will I have to cobble together my own method for triggering a flash if I want to use one with this?

Need some tipps: shooting fast "birds" with the Eos 7D

Hello!

Our school has ended, and I got an Canon Eos 7D from my grandfather. I am very happy with it. In my holidays I want to shoot our Patrouille and other fast planes.

This is my first camera, so please tell me how to shoot with this camera in this special situation.
I read some postings:
Is it true to use at an opened aperture, 1/1000s, Iso automatic?
I read, that I should limit the maximum Iso. Which should be the maximum Iso I should use?

Anythning else, I should take care?

Thanks for great help!

I have to train a little bit, in autumn I want to got to an shooting range on the near Axalp with my Dad.
:D

5d3 + flash 580 ex behavior

Hi all
i just bought 5D mark 3, after playing with it a bit, i was satisfied enough BUT here is the snag i hit which is major.

Does anybody of you guys work with a speedlight flash? because the flash changes EVERYTHING.

lets be more specific.

AV program (without flash in the camera)
f/2.8
auto iso 100-25600
min shutter = 1/250

when i put the flash
everything is pretty much screwed!

iso locks to 400 for some reason
the shutter speed disobey the minimum shutter speed (although i can control it through flash control up to 1/60 or 1/200).

i want
auto iso 100-25600
min speed = 1/250
and flash to ttl in order to lit a bit my subjects in front..

any idaes? don't tell me i have to play manually, that scenario is out of the question.. I do weddings.. i can't play with settings during the cemerony, i need something more solid and automated.

10 stop High quality ND filter

Hey guys,

I was wondering how many of you use a 10 stop ND filter and which one do you recommend. I am looking to buy a good one, not to get too much color cast or vigneting. So far I found Lee big stopper, b+w, singh ray ...

How much difference is there, because the prices vaty a lot...
Also, do you use a lens screw on or a square type that you need a holder for.

Thank you
T

My new baby

That's it, the one on the right. My new 100D/SL1

I couldn't help myself. My intentions were to buy this sometime further down the track when the price dropped and Canon released more pancake lenses to make this truly compact. But I'm heading to Hawaii with the family next month and it is the end of financial year here in Australia so I've justified myself to a little treat and tax ride off.

I've only had this for a few hours but I'm really impressed with how intuitive it is - no need to read the manual, dedicated iso button, touch screen and being able to turn the top dial without the lcd screen going to black (what is it with the 5D III doing that?). Coming from a 5D background I wasn't expecting much on auto focus speed but wow, it's up there. Video auto focus works quite well when your not chasing a 4 year old.

I love it's size, it's so cute, I think I'm going to take it to bed tonight :D

Alaskan Cruise - 70-300L/Crop Sensor?

Would the big upcoming Alaskan cruise (in a week and a half) call for a 70-300L? My current gear is a T1i, Sigma 17-50, Canon 100 2.0 and 200 2.8II (and the associated goodness for waterfalls, bright light, etc.).
Also, would wildlife in bright sun necessarily call for a polarizing filter in many cases or are polarizing filters more of a landscape thing?
Thanks.

Canon 70-200 f2.8 is ii very slight rotational play, is it normal?

I just purchased brand new 70-200 f2.8 is ii a few days ago and after half a day of shooting with 5d3 i feel something loose from camera or lens. I am not sure where the movement its coming from but it cannot be heard, i can only feel it (something loose) when tilting the camera or with any movement. So i did some experiments and came to conclusion that the slight movement came from between the lens mount and camera mount. when i firmly press in the lens towards the camera, no play at all.

when the lens is mounted onto camera i can hear the lock engaged and it seems firm but if you were to use a little force to move left or right you can feel little play, there is no up-down movement just left and right. now i am a little concern because i've never own a heavy, nor have any telephoto lens prior to this one so i am not sure if this is normal for telephoto lens or the lens itself needs to be exchange? and my 17-40 and 135 f2 seems perfectly fine when mounted on my 5d mark iii. no movement at all.

does anybody here encounter the same problems with their 70-200 f2.8 is ii.

thanks for your input
Brian

Help complete my bundle...

Ok so I have $3000 +/- to spend on upgrading my kit. I currently have a T1i with kit lens and 55-250.

I am pretty set on a new 6D. Can get it for around $1600 brand new.

So my question is what lens/speedlites do you recommend. I have a carrying bag and tripod already.

Not a professional nor do I intend on being paid for any pictures. Main subjects will be my family/toddler. Occasional landscape/auto pictures. So I guess "recreational" would be a good term.

Appreciate all the help in advance.
