The discussion about apparent depth of field in the upcoming APS-C announcements thread got me to thinking about maybe switching over to FF. I mostly take family pictures, so getting a nicer DoF would be welcome. So, here's how this would go down:
1) Sell T2i with 18-135 kit lens ($600 after Amazon cut)
2) Sell 17-55 f 2.8 ($650 after Amazon cut)
3) Buy Used 5DIII (LensRentals sale) or 6D and 40mm pancake ($2300).
Total cost of coverting: $1050.

I wouldn't want to spend any more money for a zoom (24-70 or 24-105), so the pancake would have to do.

So, what you would you do? Would it be worth $1050 and would you trade FF for the lack of a normal zoom lens?

Hello everyone! Just wanna give back to this great forum of which I've been lurking for several months now, but only joined a few days ago, and share a nice accessory I saw online a couple of weeks ago, decided to order a few days ago, and received today.

I've been a "SpiderPro Dual Camera System" user for several months now. It's a great back-saver. I've also been a "BlackRapid RS-2 Sport 2 Camera Strap" user for a couple of years now. It's an easy way to transport and a quick way to shoot with your DSLR. To me those two accessories are indispensable for comfort and efficiency.

If you're like me and have been looking for a solution to use a SpiderPro System with an arca-swiss L-bracket or plate, here is a necessary accessory to pick up. Does it have the same quality as Kirk and RRS arca-swiss products? I'd say it's pretty close. Would I have total confidence that this can hold up the weight of my camera, zoom lens (and perhaps a flash) combo? Only time will tell. IMHO and limited experience, so far, so good. Will update this post as I get more field-time with it.

If you want to use a BlackRapid strap with the above accessory, SpiderPro has an adapter http://www.spiderholster.com/arca-swiss-adapter.html so you can use, say a Kirk QRC-1 or a RRS B2-FAB-F, and not have to unscrew the SpiderPro clamp.

I am not, in any way, related to SpiderPro. I'm just a customer sharing a good find to everyone here.

So with all the talk of "who's going to bring out the first FF Mirrorless and when", I'm interested to know *why* people want some so badly.
The options are pretty self-explanatory, but I thought I'd give some counter-arguments to each option to start with:
- 1/2: Yes, potentially mirrorless can be thinner. But taking out the mirror and reducing the flange distance can lead to other problems, with the greater angle of incidence. Leica has overcome that problem, at least some of it, with fancy microlens arrays, but still problems exist that must be fixed in PP. Read this and this for examples of these problems. Of course, you can use your current EF lenses on any potential-future FF mirrorless body, but then the combo won't be much smaller than using it on an 1100D now.

- 3/4: Yes, taking away the mirror means less parts used in manufacturing and less potential for things to break. But you really think a bit of a mirror (which they've had 40 years of experience and R&D making) adds that much to the cost of a camera?

- 5: It will happen. ... ... eventually. For now there's no denying that phase-detect is faster than phase-in-sensor and contrast-AF. But with enough R&D it will happen.

- 6/7: That's somewhere about where I am.

Any other potential reasons to want an FF Mirrorless that i've missed?

Hey Everyone!

I was wondering if anyone could suggest what lens or lenses would be great for taking pictures of real ice cream. My family owns an Ice Cream chain and we would like to get some great shots of our products.

At the moment we are buy a 5D3, but I would like to get the appropriate lenses for the ice cream shots as well.

I'd greatly appreciate your input.

If I were to upgrade to a 7d or the future 7d replacement what should I upgrade to for my standard lens.
I currently have a 50mm 1.8 and a 28mm 1.8. And I want to upgrade to some l glass. I will give my 50mm 1.8 to my brother who is beginning with his rebel. The question is, should I keep the 28mm and get the 50mm 1.2, making a 40mm and 80mm equivalent. Or should I sell the 28 and get the 35mm 1.4, which will make a 55mm equivalent. These are my options for portraits. I have a wide angle, and a telephoto already, so these are portrait specific.
Or, could this be an easy sacrifice of $500 by selling the 28, and getting the canon 50mm 1.2 along with the new sigma 35mm 1.4

I have decided that I want to upgrade to a full frame from my 40D. Of course my 1st choice would be a 5D3 but I think that the price is a little out of my reach. The 5D2 looks like a better option to me over the 6D but I still have one nagging question. I have read a lot about the 5D2 autofocus system leaving much to be desired but I am more or less happy with the system on my 40D. I don't love it but it get the job done most of the time. I mainly just shoot landscapes but I like to shoot pets and sports just for fun every now and then. None of witch I do professionally, just an enthusiast.

So my question is, how does the 5D2 AF compare to the 40D? Would this be a downgrade or still an upgrade? Thanks is advance for your help.

</strong>Canon has plans to introduce new EF-S lenses in the first couple of quarters of 2013. There will be a new push on the crop segment of the EOS lineup and new lenses are going to be a part of that revival. A few lenses are mentioned as highly probable and will appear alongside a new “pro” APS-C camera, currently expected to be the EOS 7D Mark II.</p>
<p>Two niche lenses are mentioned, one being an EF-S zoom fisheye as well as a new IS macro. No mention of focal length on either. A replacement to the wonderful EF-S 10-22 is also mentioned to be in the works. It will probably be a couple of mm wider at the short end.</p>
<p>The most pressing EF-S lenses that need a redo would be the EF-S 18-200 IS, which we hear is in the works and will have an STM focus motor and be longer at the telephoto end. The other is the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS. While this is a very good lens optically, the build quality and internal dust problems leave a lot to be desired. A small refresh would be welcomed.</p>
<p>I’m also told that there have been delays in regards to lenses brought about by new manufacturing technologies that Canon has introduced in their factories. Those issues are being worked out and we can expect Canon to “catch-up with demand” sometime in 2013.</p>
<p>It was also noted that the 1100D and 60D would quietly be discontinued in the first part of 2013 with no replacements being imminent. This one would surprise me a bit, although perhaps the breadth of products in the APS-C line is no longer needed.</p>

I consider myself a hobbyist and have just gotten into flash photography, and I was hoping to seek some advice and recommendations on portable diffusers for the flash unit. I have a 580 EXII (Sto-fen diffuser attached on head) which at times I need to shoot on or off camera at birthday events or parties (indoors). The events are not professional shoots just family and friends throwing private events. At times circumstances forces me to shoot with minimal gear/equipment, I am usually shooting solo and moving around the venue quite a bit to capture candid shots of adults and kids. Having said that I wish i had something that could soften the shadows like you get when using a shoot through umbrella. But like I said, mobility is an issue for me.

I was checking out the videos and demos of Gary Fong's lightspheres. Are they any good in terms of softening the harshness of the shadows while at the same time illuminating the subject nicely? Few problem I often run into are high ceilings or non-white colored walls, hence cant bounce off off them. I am looking for a diffuser or anything that is practical and portable, preferably something that can be mounted on the flash head to take nice portrait shots at parties events mentioned above.

If it helps, I currently have a lightstand, 40" shoot through umbrella, a pair of radio triggers.

Source: Serious lurking on this forum.

Observation: Two of next year's camera bodies will allegedly get entirely new naming systems: the high MP, and the 7D successor.

Speculation: That's because they'll introduce Canon's new sensor technology. Probably 180nm instead of 500nm (on a side note, I'd love to know more specifics about what that means).

Question: If Canon does implement this tech in a 7D.2, could that APS-C camera produce lower noise at low ISO than current FF cameras?

I ask because I'm pretty invested in EF-S lenses but also very interested in a 6D. Low ISO IQ is the #1 consideration for me. Thanks for any thoughts or info!

I currently have been using the 50mm 1.2 with my MKII for portraits and indoor shoots. However, I would like to expand my lens options and needing a general zoom lens so I have read plenty of lovely reviews about the 24-70 and 70-200. Eventually I would love to have both of these however I can only purchase one of them at this time. Any suggestions on which one I should start with that could give me a good general use until I can also purchase the other? I am torn at this point!

An interesting thought came to me before I went to bed. Below you'll find an assumption that came suddenly to my head, so please don't take it too seriously.

So... Let's assume there are two cameras with similar color tones reproduction abilities, but with different possible lightness level capturing ability. For example:
- sensor of camera A has 12 stops of DR, 16 billion tones it can distinguish
- sensor of camera B has 10 stops of DR, 16 billion tones it can distinguish

Having a flat scene (i.e. low DR scene) on a shot we'll push an image with, say, 8 DR to be captured with both sensors. And then both images will be edited in post to retrieve lacking contrast. So we need to add:
- 4 stops for 12-stop camera
- 2 stops for 10-stop camera

So my point is: with lower DR camera we'll have lower tone delta (difference of the initial color tone in the scene with reproduced tone by the sensor) when processing the low DR shot made using lower DR sensor. That happens because of decreased amount of modifications made to the file to achieve required result.

What do you guys think about that?

I've been reading some posts here, and a thought occured to me...seems a lot of people, more than I'd have thought...are mentioning regularly using Live View for stills.

Now, I use it when doing video, it is kinda forced on you...but for stills, I've rarely used it...in fact, I really don't know how to get most of the settings I want on it yet, planning to sit with manual over the holidays and read up on that.

But I primarily use the regular old view finder, to see focus, use metering there, etc.

When shooting stills, I only really take the camera down from eye level to look at the back to maybe play back an image or two when I'm not sure of the exposure...

Anyway, just curious how many use the Live View primarily when shooting stills, and if so...why? What's the advantages?
It seems a little awkward for me...to hold the camera out in front of me, and at that angle to me, not as easy to spin the shutter speed wheel, or dial the aperture on the back...etc.

Why do you like it if you use it?

Image quality. If they deliver stunning quality then they are a guaranteed purchase, if not then it's a no go.

So far I've been disappointed with the 24 & 28mm IS, while they have better quality than the lenses they replace by far, the way people say they have L image quality is misleading. They have the most entry level L quality and their L counterparts primes are much better.

The 24-70mm IS F4 looks to be a real winner though, it should have the highest IQ for any normal image stabilized zoom and the macro is a nice bonus.

Image quality is the single most important factor above all else for me. Does anyone else feel the same?

I'm sure this has been covered a dozen times before but I'm really struggling to make a decision. I want to upgrade from my T2I but I still plan on using it extensively. I shoot mainly wildlife, old buildings, anything in nature. I currently own a canon 10-22, 24-70v1, 100-400L and 1 of my favorites, the 100 macro. I love the extended reach of having a crop sensor so I was leaning towards the 7D (although I do not shoot sports). I think all of these lenses minus the 24/70 tell me to go 7D. I think I would miss that extra reach if I went with the 5D2, but I do like the thought of better low light capabilities. I feel I'm a little limited on the crop sensor with my 24-70 but I can always back up. I was discussing my dilemma with a friend and he suggested a 5D2 with a 1.4 extender. Would that somewhat equal out the reach id be losing by switching to full frame? I would love any help on this.

Hi all,
I could use some advice on choosing my next lens, please.
Although I don't have any expensive gear, a few friends of mine (P&S owners) keep asking me to shoot family events, like their kids' birthday parties (one-eyed man in the land of the blind...). The thing is, I fell (well, I am) very limited with my current gear and avoid the events whenever possible.
The "problem":
- 60D
- 18-135 kit lens
- 50 1.4 lens
- Speedlite 430 EX II
- Manfrotto MKC3-P01 tripod
(Yeah, I know, cheap stuff, but I was not sure when I first started and decided to keep it relatively cheap.)
Since I'm enjoying photography much more than I could anticipate when I bought the camera, I think I could make good use of some better gear now. (And maybe the hobby will turn into a part-time job, who knows?) I'm just not sure if I should keep buying EF-S lenses because I will someday, maybe in 1 or 2 yrs from now, upgrade to FF.
Well, anyway:
- FF now, like a 6D with the 24-105 kit and saving for faster lenses in the future, or
- Save for a while and then go FF (body-only) with a 24-70 2.8 for better motion-stopping possibilities, or
- Canon 10-22 + 24-70 2.8, and keep the 60D for now, or
- Keep the 60D, buy a 17-40 instead of the 10-22, and make do with the 17-40, 50 1.4 (and zooming with my feet) and the kit lens until I decide to take the plunge and go FF?
I'm aware the 10-22 is not a fast lens; does this make it a not-so-good lens for group pics at parties?
Main use would be parties and other events, family (wife!) portraits, and of course taking a bunch of pics of my own kid.
(Please have in mind that I live in Brazil, and it will not be so easy to buy/sell used gear down here as it is in the USA when I go FF; not sure how it works in Europe.)

Can anyone provide guidance on their AFMA settings used with their 600 F/4L IS? I primarily am using a 5DMIII now.

Also If you've used Focal to calibrate your AFMA settings, what target distance and size has worked best for you? I have had issues getting the software to finish a test and my thoughts are perhaps I am out too far for the software to properly analyze the target. Curious as to others experience.

I have a question concerning 1dx focus points. I want to increase my speed to change from af point on one side to another...(I searched on the forum but did not find quiet what I was looking for)

1) i am presently configured to change focus point with the multi controller( i hated the fact to click on the af selection and then using dials to choose focus point).

2) i have 61 points active...previously i had a D4 and i had a left right top bottom joystick which was darn quick to change. I tested using less af points and hated it

3) I tried registering af point but i hate the fact that it stays lit....and its only one point (Anyone know if there is a work around to not make the registered AF point light?)....this by the way is a nice feature as I have it configured differently on vertical and horizontal...but the fact that the focus point stays there...really is a downer!

Anyone has any tips on this? How do you guys manage "fast" af point change. (btw: I shoot weddings...not so much ...and the other spectrum - karate tournaments

).

I'm looking to upgrade my photo gear for wildlife photography. Would you buy a 5D mark III to complete my 40D or for the almost same price buy a 7D and 5D mark II (and sell my 40D) ?

Low light situations in european and tropical forests are the places where i'll take my pictures...

is 15 fps in 4K worth anything? or will it be all choppy?
looking at the gopro3 and thats the top resolution for video.
i am just thinking cropping that down to 1080P would get rid of some of the fish eye factor that these cameras display.
the other option is 2.7K at 30 fps.
