Dont want a general discussion for this topic but much more of a specific thing-

I´m mostly shooting landscapes, nature (no wildlife yet), studio (stock and people) and some high iso events.
I dont need fast FPS but i need a good enough autofocus which can lock on in dark locations. Both the 6D and the 5d2 only have one crosstype so it would be a downgrade from my 40d, would it?

For stock 21 MP are better then 20 because they reach a bigger size to sell (2o MP are just under the edge), the 5d2 also has the PC-Sync port...

High ISO: I think we can all agree that the 6d will be better in those situations?

Money: I can get a new 5d2 for 1500€, or a slightly used one for 1300 with the BG and i wouldnt need new Cards because i got the CF Cards. 6D+BG+Cards would be over 2200€. Do you think it´s worth it for what i shoot?

PS: Wlan and GPS are both interesting for me but i didnt miss them in the 40D.

I am interested in a Gitzo GM5561 monopod for a 300 2.8 IS but wondered if anyone had any feedback on Really Right Stuff's MC-34 monopod.

Also was looking at the RRS heads and which preference of clamp people are going for between the quick release lever and the screw knob clamp.

Oh 1D, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.....

Just got my 1D X yesterday. Been gun-shy because of this little "issue"(http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=10847.45) (credit to Northstar for starting the thread).

Anyways, just thought I'd share some of my ambient lowlight shots. All with a 100L. All SOOC JPEGs...no PP. Absolutely unscientific and non-award-winning...all snapshots. Just toying around with on-cam settings and familiarizing myself with the abundant (current 5DMk3 owner) settings. The 1D X molds in my hand way better than my 5DMk3 with BG-E11. So far, it's been a joy to use.

Just to let you all know where I'm coming from and for future reference, I'm not a pixel-peeper nor a chart-shooter. No disrespect whatsoever to people that do...just not my cup of tea.

I am looking at a Canon 600 mm lens on a certain auction site. I have sent a message to the vendor and his/her reply makes me think it is a bit dodgy. They quote the serial number as 20224. Is there anywhere I can check this is, at least, possibly valid?
I am not trying to buy the lens as I already have one, but I am trying to stop someone getting ripped off!

So I currently own a 50mm 1.4, but am wondering if I should consider getting the 40mm or 28mm, to use as a somewhat 'normal' lens on my crop-sensored cameras. The main reason I'm considering, is because my Dad recently bought a 50mm f/1.2L, and my 1.4 doesn't seem as needed anymore. Also, I'm somewhat worried about the focus mechanism problems that have been known to occur with the 1.4. I'd mainly be using this lens to carry around during times I didn't feel like lugging around my 24-70 f/2.8 (Casual street phtography, family occasions, etc.) Suggestions?

im planning to get a new portrait lens for my 5D mk iii.

I have read a lot of reviews about the 85mm 1.8 that it has a very fast focus and is pretty sharp.

Does someone have any experience with both of these lenses to help me in my decision?

The price is actually nearly the same due to a canon cashback sale in austria. (100mm 2.0 is only 30Euros more expensive than the 85mm)

I have a T1i and use the venerable and outrageously great 135 2.0 for indoor sports - mostly volleyball. I tried the 70-200 2.8 IS II and really liked almost everything about the 135 better so it's no more. I do, though, need an outdoor sports and indoor/outdoor events lens. The upcoming Tamron 70-200 2.8 looks pretty promising. What would you say about that, the 70-300 or the 70-300L? Feel free to throw in the 70-200 4.0 IS, too, if you like. I guess that could do well indoors with non-sports as well at times.

I'm going to be shooting a birthday party in less than 12 hours.
When would it be an ideal time to change to another lens to get better shots?
Lets say I shoot on a 50mm on a crop sensor, when do you think I should change lenses, when everyone finishes their games/activities and prepare for their meal? Cause most of the time, I'll leave my 50mm. or do I even need to change lenses?

Ps. With these two primes, you think I'll need the zoom? Considering I won't shoot a lot of telephoto...

Hello All;

I have a thought for a feature that doesn't seem to be there yet.

With our EF lenses, the camera knows (and can quickly set) the focus distance. The computer in the camera can easily calculate the DOF from the exposure. They already offer built in exposure bracketing.

Why not offer focus bracketing? With a USM lens, the time required to shoot (say) three successive photos with three different focus distances would be minimal. Perhaps setable for how many and what the end points are. I've seen it done manually (it is certainly easy to do that way; I sometimes do it just to be certain of capturing a landscape just the way I want it).

Seems like something that would, from time to time, be very valuable to have. And the ability to combine the photos just as one does with HDR would make for potentially fascinating photos.

And if this is buried in menu 174 of my 5D3, my apologies for not having read the manual enough times to find it...

Kudos to CR guy for reviewing the Leica M9 on his own Canon site!

I had similar experiences, albeit with the much cheaper Fuji X-Pro 1.
All I shoot is street so my 5D MK3 isn't getting much love recently - it's just not the right tool for the job.

There's also a definite lack of sharpness compared to the Fuji with every L (or other lens ) I have.
I think CR guy noticed the same thing with the Leica.
The lack of AA filter definitely has a positive effect, so maybe if Canon's new MP monster has a 'E" variant like the D800, they'll be back on par.

However, the size and weight are the main factors for me...

I have my sights on the new 24 MP Leica M, perhaps in the New Year when the reviews are out...

I'm spending Thanksgiving in Sun Valley and will be shooting a variety of wide and UWA landscape scenes. i.e. Baldy, the Lodge, Sawtooths etc.

I've had good learning experiences this fall with my B+W 3.0 10 stop ND filter but have yet to try it in a snow covered or high key scene.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I am just starting off and looking to take still photography only, video is not part of the equation. At this point I'm interested in taking street level and portrait photography sometime in low-light without a flash.

I have spent 50+ hours reviewing the Canon 5D3 and Nikon D800 but just cant seem to make up my mind. If you were able to start over and were comparing the two cameras what system would you prefer and why? My budget is around 5k including lenses.

Here are the two options I've been considering...

1) Canon 5D3 and Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM
2) Nikon D800 and Nikon Nikon 24-70mm 2.8G ED AF-S

first of all that's going to be a no whining thread. It's more of a question for which I got no answer. Maybe some of you got one or can tell me how to test it DIY. I'm doing apprenticeship for photography so I'm partly working in a firm for industrial photography and partly at school. There is one professor he is sort of a photo scientist and he claims all Canon Nikon and whatever lenses (within the 36x24sensor range) not be sharp enough or physically not able to reveal higher megapixel images. The lenses would reach a high level of resolution but could not handle those high megapixels. And again I'm not saying thats my opinion. I just started to think about what lenses to buy for my future job and if you are a student like me you don't have that much money to spend on wrong gear. So you think twice about what to buy. That is why I was wondering about will future lenses fit better to high megapixels...or is it the other way round that the lenses are able to deliver even better images than the megapixels we even have right now?

I heard about testing lenses with lines on a white surface. The moment where the lense cannot divide those linse because it simply cannot deliver and merges them to one fat line...

Sorry in advance my english is pretty ok i guess but it's hard sometimes for foreigners to speak in an appropriate vocabulary. I try my best.

I may have missed recent mentions of a new 100-400L but am thinking ahead about:
1. how much to save/allocate from limited funds for future purchases, and
2. How long before we see this lens.

I want something longer than what I have now: 70-200 series II. I do have a Canon 2x extender II. I'd probably sometimes use the Extender on the 100-400 if I bought that, as I won't be buying, say, a 400 f2.8. I don't photograph birds. This is for landscapes, sports, commercial (stills) editorial work.

I wonder what the likely cost of a new 100-400 will be? $2500? What does everyone think?

I am confused by two technical terms in the camera specs, can anyone please explain the meaning and real life impact to me :-o ?

1. According to the specs, the 6d has an expanded "AF Working Range": "Center AF Point: EV -3 to 18 (at 73°F/23°C, ISO 100)" - see http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_6d...

• Since afaik all metering is done though the lens, (how) does the max. open aperture of the lens influence this af working range?
• Since the -2ev of the 5d3 is supposed to be nearly moonlight, does a -3ev rating make a difference for real life shots like darker wedding receptions or shots in dim-lit clubs?

2. The "Metering Range" for the 6d (and 60d btw) is "EV 0-20 (at 73°F/23°C with EF 50mm f/1.4 lens, ISO 100)", for the 5d3 "EV 1-20 (at 73°F / 23°C with 50mm f/1.4 lens at ISO 100)" ....

• Since a lens with a smaller max. open aperture will bump up the min. ev of the metering range, how does the difference between 5d3 ([email protected]) and 6d ([email protected]) matter for real life shots say with lenses of a max. open aperture with f2.8 or f4?

Hi All

Over the last 2 years we have travelled overland from the UK to Australia, primarily using an old 450D, 17-85 & 55-250mm, although we had managed to get some good and ok pics, we found we missed a lot shots during the trip, probably due to rushing too much and not taking the time to put more thought in the output of our shots.

We have now upgraded to 5d III with a 24-105 for the second part of our trip, and are taking our time enjoying taking photos with the camera.

Our trip will last another two years driving the length of the Americas (Alaska to Argentina) and from South Africa back to the UK.

Due to the nature of the trip will be taking a wide variety of pictures:
• Landscapes
• Wildlife
• Macro
• Urban Portraits, People

We will be travelling by 4x4 so weight is not an issue but dust will be.

Our current thoughts is the following set up:
• 17-40L
• 100 – 400L II (if it is released before we leave)
• Canon 100L Macro or Sigma 150mm
• Manfrotto 055XProB Tripod w/ 496RC2
• Bag – Still undecided – im looking for something that will hold all of the kit as a back pack, but also has space for water / food / rain jacket,

We will be leaving Australia in June 2013, but would like buy the lenses prior to leaving, which will allow us improve our photography skills and get use to using these lenses.

We are on a budget, but do not mind investing in kit which we hope will last us for several years to come, any advice would hugely appreciated.

But apparently D600, D800, D7000, and basically all newly announced Nikons have Sony sensors, except for D4 and D3200.

I've been reading a lot of other forums and there is a lot ppl who recommends bringing a point and shoot over dslr because of theft and just being in the moment there for the experience and not worrying about your gear etc.

Ill be in Thailand for about 1 week and Laos for 3 weeks this coming December. Has anyone been there recently with their dslr and would recommend me bringing my 5d mk iiI?

I do have a t2i and a 7d as well a g1x. I was also thinking of pairing my dslr with my 24-70 L. It'll be my first time in s.e.asia but I've traveled overseas to Europe before and know the basic rules to keep inconspicuous.

We all know that Canon's sensor tech is not getting rave reviews these days, but this is not about the sensor tech, but the sensor SIZE. All FFs have same size, but APS-C varies across companies.

Canon's APS-C is 10% smaller than its competition's. So, for Canon's crop cameras to be on the same playing field as the competition, they will have to have better sensor tech.

Friends I have learnt a lot from Canon Rumors and continue to learn regularly.

At the same time I am looking out for other forums and websites where I could learn photography further.

Any favorites? Any suggestions?

Not sure if it's a reliable source, but it almost makes it sound like there'll be a 6D + 24-70 f/4 L kit and another 6D + 24-105 f/4 L kit released on November 30th. Like all these rumors, I guess only time will tell if it's true...
