CPS and borrowing lenses

I hope someboday can help me, I just joined CPS as a Gold Member and would like to "play with" the TS-E 17mm, if I find it matches my style, I may break the bank for it. In any event, what is the procedure one goes through to request a lens? The CPS website says you can borrow for "a week or two", how long do you typically use a borrowed lens? Do they take your credit card number as security against you damaging/losing the lens? And, finally, is it OK to borrow a lens that you have no intention of ever purchasing (say the 600 f/4)?

Eclipse for Australia!!!

Calling for help from the Aussies of CR.

If you plan on photographing the eclipse, please post some images you capture. Looks like the majority of the globe won't be able to experience it. Posted two links below that might help anyone with timing.

5d mk iii help shooting an owl flying display

I'm going to an owl flying display next week with my 5d3 and 70-200 2.8 ii.
They will be reasonably close so I don't need anything longer than 200mm.

I need some help/advice on what settings to use, particularly the af settings.

It will be under tree cover with mixed lighting so raw Is a must. I was thinking keep the aperture between 2.8 and 5.6 and aim for a shutter of around 1/1000 to freeze them in flight.

The owls will be flying side to side and straight at me.

Any ideas for the af settings or anything else I should consider?

Thanks in advance.

I lost $300 in an accounting error.

I keep a spreadsheet with all of my gear. What I've paid, what I've sold, residual values, etc. I was going through past years and I noticed I had a projection which combined several fields which resulted in me having to make a correction and consequently losing $300.

It isn't that much considering I have spent over $29500 in gear in the past few years, but that phantom $300 will haunt me. Every time I am saving up for a lens/body and I am a stone's throw away...

Ugh.

Where is Canon's X100s?

Why can't canon issue a smaller body, optical rangefinder, fixed fast lens camera to compete with the
Fuji x100s? It can't be a technical problem - it's canonet rangefinders were industry leaders. It's not
a competitive problem with other point and shoot canon cameras. It could compete at the 1000-1200
price point, decimate Sony's RD100, give buyer's an alternative to Fuji, and compete with camera phones
with a bigger, better image.

Is An UWA Lens Useful on a Crop Sensor?

After stewing to upgrade to FF or not I've decided to stick with my trusty old T1i. Not to brag, but I really get some great pics. 2 even ended up on our local TV station the other day as a backdrop when there's nothing on.
I've got a Sigma 17-50, Canon 100 2.0 and Canon 200 2.8 II. I use the primes for sports and the normal zoom for everything else. There are times when I could use a little more width, but nothing that's a deal breaker.
So, of course, an UWA would help a little there, but in general is an UWA lens a good thing to have for getting more in and also for the distorted UWA look when getting up close? Is it something that many enjoy having and using?
Thanks.

San Jose Street Photography

Hello CR! Here's my very first attempt at street photography in San Jose. Everything shot on a 5DIII and a 35mm f/1.4L. Criticism is very welcomed. Thank you for viewing!

Viewing and deleting photos on 5D MKIII

I recently got mark III and I have few questions...

I configured Zoom button to zoom in to point where focus was acquired. If I take few pictures in a row and press zoom button while last picture is still displayed on screen, I cannot scroll through other pictures with quick dial. Is there some way around this? I don't want to press preview button and then zoom button every time I want to quickly go through images I have just captured.

Second thing is that I have configured camera to record Raw files on CF card and Jpeg files to SD card. When I delete any picture with delete button only Raw file gets deleted (or Jpeg if I set camera to preview Images from SD card). How can I quickly delete both images?

A New Large Sensor PowerShot Coming [CR1]

<p><strong>Not a G2X

</strong>We’re told that a rethink of a large sensor PowerShot is coming in 2013. It won’t be a G2X and will be designed more like a larger PowerShot S110. It will have a fast short zoom lens and the new 18mp APS-C sensor along with a DIGIC 6 processor. It won’t have an OVF or EVF and will be priced less than the G1X was.</p>
<p>We’re told it will be a late summer announcement along with the regular updates to the PowerShot lineup.</p>

Help with 5d Mark III

I have so many problems with my 5D3 don't get me wrong it is a super good camera. I love it. But I wanted to see if any of you have the same problems as I am having.

I have these with 24-70 usm I, 16-35 II, 70-200 II.

1, The focus dots will suddenly blink in red with out touching any button. Just like you are moving the camera around and suddenly it will blink with no reason. (I am on auto focus mode) happens once a while.

2, The indicator in the back of camera (the one shows if the camera is functioning or not). My camera is OFF I just pick it up from my camera's bag it blinks. A lots of time it happens.

3, Somehow ( thought this is weather seal) dust can get inside the camera while I have my lens on. It is on my focus screen. and seem like. I tried to clean but seem like now the dust is in between the view finder and the focus screen. Is there anything I can do about that? (it just past the warranty, funny is it just past few days) :'(

Just wonder if any one has the same problem?

Thanks all,

6D + Samyang 24 Visits Badlands Milky Way Extreme ISOs

2013_05_04_51011.jpg

I did this last spring with a rented 5D III and Canon 14L. Did it last fall with a 5D II and Canon 24L. Now just did it again with a 6D and Samyang 24(as well as the Samyang 14 and Zeiss 21).

The 6D is simply a beast with high ISOs and the night sky. Even more of one than the 5D III was, easily trumping it. 12,800 was not a problem at all. Quite amazing actually. 10,000 felt like one was starting to push it for the 5D III. The same feeling probably comes in around 20,000 ISO or so on the 6D.

The Samyang 24 F1.4 was a load better for this than the coma abusive Canon 24L II. Plenty fine using it at F1.4 for this. Paired on the 6D it is pretty insane what can be had.

The Samyang 14 also a lot better for this than the Canon 14L II.

All images on here just one exposure, so no tracking stuff obviously. http://www.extremeinstability.com/2013-5-4.htm

I made a second page with full size crop examples for some 6D high ISO ideas as well as the coma of the 4 lenses. I could probably add something if something was wanted. It's clearly not a direct comparison as I never shot with that in mind and had the gear at completely different times. It is what it is and I'm sure enough to give some an idea what to expect that might help. http://www.extremeinstability.com/2013-5-4b.htm

[advice] My last tripod

Hello CR,

I am quite satisfied with my current gear (5D3, several L's) but I am lacking a good tripod.
I used my father's old tripod for a long time because of sentimental reasons (I mean, it's my father's tripod!).

However, I have a feeling it is about time to upgrade.
Budget is not really an issue - I prefer buying once over buying something cheap(er) and being not satisfied afterwards. Eventually you'll end up buying two times.

Main use will be landscapes (85%) and cars or other static objects.
Heaviest gear combination will be my 5D3+70-200 2.8 II or 5D3+100-400 (although the 16-35 and 24-70 will certainly be used much more often). I am 196 cm tall (I guess that is 6.43 feet? Quite tall). Stability is more important for me than transportability. I do use Arca-style RRS plates on all my gear (I use my Gitzo monopod very much, hence the plates)

What do you think of the RRS BH-55 as a head and the Gitzo GT3542LOS or GT3532LS as a tripod? Is it way too much for my needs? I'd prefer a 3-section tripod over the 4-section series, but there unfortunately is no 3-section ocean series from Gitzo.

I highly value your opinions and would appreciate if you share your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

tl;dr? Here is a short summary:

Tripod + head in need,
- stability > transportability
- budget: not a real issue
- main use: landscape and other stills
- I am 196cm tall (6.43 feet)
- Arca plates
- Heaviest combination: 5D3+70-200 2.8 II or 5D3+100-400 (although the 16-35 and 24-70 will certainly be used much more often)
- I am a bit RRS / Gitzo focused, but other opinions are still very welcome
