5D3 video new vs. old firmware - might be different after all

A tweet from J.M. offers this sample of video taken using the internal recorder with the same settings, old vs. new firmware:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/vuwbn2582pv67i3/5d3121.png

So maybe I actually was correct in my initial take (a post I since deleted) where I said it looked like the video was sharper. I first I was sure that it was crisper, but then I decided I had tricked myself.

Internal vs external seems similar but new vs old firmware seems different.

Maybe it does grab more details and not mush details in shadows as much now.

(I think I have seen a few very weird artifacts with the new firmware though perhaps popping up in video. A couple nasty weird things, but not sure yet.)

(It doesn't look as crisp but artifact free as the 'raw' DNG stuff ML discovered though.)

Recommendations for a 180mm macro?

I am attempting to decide between Canon 180mm F3.5L and the Sigma 180mm F2.8 and would appreciate any advice or recommendations. I shoot predominantly wildlife and want to use this lens for butterflies and small plants and flowers. I like the fact that the Sigma is a 2.8 versus the Canon 3.5 and also like the fact the Sigma has image stabilization. Any thoughts on this or has anyone used both of these lenses?

A Walk Around Lens for a Trip

First a little background: 1) I'm old. 2) My wife wishes to visit Israel (where she has previously gone on a mission trip but she wants a tour this time). My Pastor is planning a tour in 2014. 3) I dearly love L glass and constant apertures but my 70-200 II is a little on the heavy side. 4) I want to carry as little as possible.

Considering the above I am thinking about something like the Canon 18-200, Tamron 18-200 or 270, or something similar. If I do this my kit would probably be my 7D, this walk around lens, and my Tokina 11-16 2.8, and extra batteries. Carrying a flash unit is up in the air at this point.

So my question for you, my learned friends, is 1) are there better options for me? 2) do you have experiences with any of these lenses? Should I add a monopod to this list (even though my cf tripod is light weight I don't think I want to include it)?

Looking for an Mirorrless or Compact for climbing/high altitude hiking

Need some advice:

I am looking for an compact Camera or Mirrorless for climbing or high-altitude hiking.
Preferences:
 • smaller an lighter than SLR
 • focus on high image quality
 • normal AF speed (shutter lag <0,5s)
 • able to use an polarisation filter e.g.
 • wide angle preference
Price unter 1500€ inclusive wideangle lens

I aimed at the Sony Cyber-shot RX100, but there are very variying tests. (Dpreview gives not the best notes. Color foto (German magazine) says superb,...) Which test to trust?
The Fuji 100s or the X-1E?

Which model would you prefer?

limit auto iso in video mode on 5D3

Hey,

Either i'm missing something or just dont understand this bit at all.

basically, i set the iso limits for photo and video modes both to 6400, and then go to Av and set it to auto... but regardless of what i do... it will still jump up to 12,800 when its dark. I dont want this, i'd rather have a darker image and realize it and light for that, rather than the image looking fine on the monitor but being really noisy when i get to post.

anyone know what im missing here?

thanks

How about a new 28-135mm?

With all this talk of new lenses... How about a new 28-135mm? I use this lens ALL THE TIME for events and walking about. It's nice that I can get some nice landcape shots and still use it for some close-ups of various people and items.

The 24-105mm f4 L is really nice, but it doesn't have enough reach and it's f4... f2.8 would have to be the absolute minimum...

For retail of $400, the 28-135mm is a REALLY nice lens. While maybe not the sharpest, certainly versatile and good image characteristics. Canon, how about dropping the 24-105, beefing up the 28-135 and putting some L glass in there with a f2.8-4?

SX50 and Obama

Just in Washington DC for a few days to attend the National Academy of Sciences meeting, and I slung the SX50 into my bag, just in case. Then, this morning a surprise visit by the man himself. I was in a better position than the press with their big white lenses. Sorry the images are so small but the BA lounge has very slow internet.

EOS 1D C new Firmware 1.1.9 with 4K25P is out

Hi all,
got my 1D C today in Germany and just started it for the first time and I see I have Firmware 1.1.9 installed and I can choose 4K with 24P and 25P. Sadly no 720 with 120P, but we knew this before.

If you like me to check for any features you are missing let me know and I try to have a look if I can find them in the new version.

Fair price for a used 85mm 1.2L II

First off I know these "what's a fair price for a ..." are kind of annoying threads because there are so many variables and so I apologize in advance. That being said, I am curious what you all think is a fair price for a used 85mm 1.2L II. I am currently negotiating with someone on craigslist and the seller reports that the lens is in "mint" condition. The seller has posted pics of the lens, but I haven't had a chance to see the actual lens yet. Assuming it is in mint or very good condition and works well/is sharp... what do you think is a fair price? The model number shows that it was manufactured in Dec of 2010 and the seller bought it brand new. I've never bought an L lens used so I am a bit nervous but figure if I could get a good deal it might be worth it. Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to simulate 1dx C.Fn6 on the 5d mark III

Good day,

I have both 1dx and 5dmkiii. I most often use 1dx for work and 5d mkiii for my assistant..BUT in church i usually take the 5dmkiii as I love the silence mode. (the 1dx silence is a joke:-) ).

Anyhow, on the 1dx on page 331 of the user manual I changed the 6 sec timer to 4 minutes...so the metering does not stop (which means that even though I take my hands off the camera for 1 minute, I can still grab it and use the joystick to change my af points around without having to click on AF On button)

Now on the 5d mkii I do not see the C.Fn6....BUT would really like to have the same setup as my 1dx.

Anyone know if I missed something ?

thank you

Anyone upgraded from their 24-70L to 24-70L MKII?

I was looking at my photo library and wanted to get an idea what focal length I mostly shoot at. Having various lenses at different point in time, the library indicates over 50% of my photos are taken using the original 24-70L alone. I have used it at weddings, family events, and for walk around. It has been a workhorse of a lens for me, and while one had to be lucky to get a good copy of it, I feel mine was not bad and am mostly happy with the images it gave me.

I am not looking to buy the MKII just yet, but if the contrast and sharpness (I dont care about corner sharpness but center to mid/outer frame should be sharp) is significantly improved over the original 24-70L at f2.8 then I might consider upgrading to the MKII (somewhere down the line).

I was wondering if others out there made the jump from the original 24-70L to the MKII, and noticed the improvements in real world situations, especially in terms of sharpness wide open at both ends.

EF 100-400 Replacement in 2013? [CR2]

Speculation has started again

We’ve received a few reports that an announcement for a replacement to the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS is “very possible for the end of August”. A few prototypes of the lens are currently in use in Asia.

This has been a lens that has been set for replacement as far back as I can remember. I think it’s more probable for release now that Nikon has put their new 80-400 out, which was an area of weakness for them.

We’ve heard from a few people that Canon is having manufacturing issues and that there’s a backlog of new lenses slated for production.

EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 IS at B&H Photo

Another mention
More mentions of a replacement to the longest lens in the Canon lineup. We’re told the new 800mm will be announced once the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x has begun shipping. There’s a possibility we’ll see at least a development announcement some time this fall. There was no mention of the EF 200 f/2L IS, a lens that was announced alongside the original 800mm only 5 short years ago. Beyond a new build type in materials, the lens will be a “nearly identical” optical formula, although improvements in vignetting and sharpness are probable.

Announcement timing could also depend on stock levels with retailers, not so much with Canon itself. I don’t imagine too many of these are made and warehoused.

I have had communication from a few other anonymous people that the next 800 would have a built-in teleconverter, which is not something I think will happen.

Lens for upcoming Auto show

Thought I'd try my hand at photographing cars. Just wondering what what be a good combination to photograph an outdoor classic car show coming up next weekend. The widest lens I have for a crop-body is the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 and for FF: 24-105 f4. There may be some open-house events where cars will be on display inside custom auto shops but this will be my first time attending this event, I'm not really sure. If the event goes until say 8 pm in the evening, then the 17-55 might be the best way to go.

I was thinking maybe renting the 24-70 2.8 II and go FF for the better IQ. If I rent, I'll need to have the lens by this coming Thursday, May 2nd.

Suggestions are welcome:

Just bought a 17-40mm F4 L

What are some things that I should check out to be sure that everything is working as should?
What are good ways the clean the focus and zoom dials(has like a white residue stuff maybe rain/sweat)
Seems to be good to me. Don't notice any scratches or cracks

Asking price was $550, talked him down to $460.
I don't really shoot wide so I wasn't really looking to purchase this lens(really wanted something with IS ie.24-105) but I like to see how good of a deal I can get. Sometimes, I get deals too good to pass up lol.

Back to the Future Parts 1/2/3 Canon Strategy

Welcome to the part 1 thread which deals with Entry Level and Camera's for the Novice. Part 2 will address Amatuer and Enthusiast users. Part 3 will address Advanced user and Pro Camera.

The Idea is to discuss Canon strategy for these three groups so that we as the consumer can take benefit.

So I will start with my take, parts 2 and 3 will be started in one and two weeks time respectively.

Assumptions that Canon has made:

1. The Smart Phone and Tablet Market will advance and grow to the point where it more or less destroys the Point and Shoot/CSC/Mirrorless market this process will take around 5 years. What customer wants to carry or use up the space of 2 portable devices in their Handbags. We must prepare and protect ourselves for this.
2. There has to be a differentiator What is it: Everyone aspires to be a photographer, people who walk around with Smart Phones and Tablets are not photographers they are simply casual tourists or they are out with their friends having a good time. A real photographer carries a DSLR. OK we found it! Carrying A DSLR is a lifestyle statement it sets Photographers apart from the SP/T users, everyone in the world realises this difference, so as all as we have to do is feed and maintain this differentiator and we stay in Business.
3. We are the Market Leader and to a great extent we will ignore what our competition is doing, we will follow our Strategy through the peaks and troughs and in the end we will survive and still be market leader. We believe this wholeheartedly.
4. Our current and our competitors product range is all over the place, first thing we need to do is standardise the products we sell for each market segment.

Let the story begin welcome to the Back to the Future Part 1 thread relating to Entry Level Camera's for the Novice

70d out in time?

I am new to DSLR's and will be traveling to Europe for a little over a month (leaving June 10th). I am pretty set on the XXD line, but would be interested in other suggestions. I was rather hopeful of the April 23rd announcement date, but now that has come and gone and no 70D. So do you guys 1) think the 70d bill be released before I leave? Or 2) think I should go for the 60D, or another suggestion.
