Fastest card for 5DM3 - do you still buffer out?

I normally use Sandisk Extreme Pro CF cards in my 5D M3 and then several people told me that they don't fill the buffer using a 1000x CF card. I tried the Lexar 1000x card and the buffer still fills up. I seem to get a few more shots before the buffer fills with the Lexar 1000x.

Has anyone tried other cards that are fast enough so that they buffer never fills?

Thanks

naked eye equivalent?

I can't seem to find the answer to my question, which is what lens could I buy for my T4i (or any crop camera) that would give me an equivalent to what the naked eye sees? 24mm? 35mm? Sorry if this has been asked a million times but I'm just curious. I recently got a 50mm, 1.8, and am loving it. I wish my camera had come with this lens! But it has gotten me curious about other prime lenses and I want one that's close to the naked eye.

Thanks for any help or info.

P.S. Is the 50mm the naked eye equivalent for a FF camera?

How Much do you use your Canon EF 16-35mm L ??

Last July, I bought a new one for $1350 on a impulse buy from Newegg, but haven't really warmed up to it. I previously found the same thing with my 17-40mmL.

I use it on my 5D MK III.

I do low light photography, and have analyzed the photos I've taken. Almost all of them are at f/2.8 and fall in the 24-35mm range of focal lengths. They also required that I boost my camera ISO to very high levels, often 25600.

I'm thinking of selling it, but I hate to. It is a very sharp lens, no problem there, I just find that I have little need of super wide angles.

Perhaps a 24mm L to go with my 35mmL, or a 24-70mm f/2.8 to replace it?

Here is a example taken at 35mm, ISO 25600. It was in blue light, which explains the tint. There is lots of noise, but it prints well at 8 X 10.

16-35mmL @ 35mm ISO 25600

I think I like the one taken with my 85mm f/1.8 at f/2 and ISO 16000 better. Maybe a 85mm f/1.2?

1DX Replacement

To give you a brief background on my self-generated speculation the 1DX was announced on October 18, 2011, the 1D4 on October 20 2009 and the 1D3 on February 21, 2007.

This represents 24 months between the 1DX & 1D4 and 32 months between 1D4 and 1D3.

Given the data above one can reasonably expect a 1DX replacement to be announced by late October 2013 or late June 2014.

For those who may not know pro bodies and pro lenses are often announced months before a major sporting event like say FIFA World Cup that is happening next year in Brazil on Thursday, June 12 or the XXII Olympic Winter Games that is happening next year in Russia on Friday, February 7.

If the 1DX replacement is announced by late October 2013 I expect stocks to trickle in after Christmas 2013. I was able to get one of the first 1D4 bodies in late January 2010. I expect something similar this time around.

So if you have a 1D4, 5D2 and a few 7D bodies is it time to upgrade or would you just wait 9 more months?

Iso set to auto and camera adjust it to 400 with flash unit On

!! What about that ? In Av, Tv and Manual modes, when the flash is turned on, that my ISO settings are on AUTO, when I pressed half shutter, the camera set the ISO back to 400!

Now I have to fix my iso manually to 800, 1600 or else to be able to catch some ambient light!!

Why !!? I want it to be auto, not 400 ! I request a fix to this issue or a On/Off at least !

I really don't understand why Canon is doing this.

Absurd. >:(

EF 17-40 Indoor foto????

I hope you can help me.

I am planing to buy a Canon 6D, which can take good fotos, at a very high ISO.

I want a Ultra Wide Lins there can take fotos indoor (family reunions and inside churches, castles etc) whit out flash and hand held.

Can the EF 17-40 do the job or do I have to buy the EF 16-35II.

The quality of the EF 17-40 is fine for me, so I will only buy the EF 16-35II if the EF 17-40 can not do the job.

Thank you for your answers :)

I did it, I took the plunge

Yesterday I received my 5D mkIII with 24-105 kit lens, a 70-200 f2.8 L II and a battery grip. ( Had to tap into my retirement fund to do so ). Having upgraded from a 7D I'm finding the layout and feel of the new full frame is pretty easy to navigate.

I find adjusting from the viewed perspective from a crop sensor to full frame is going to take some getting used to. A 17-40 L was my walk around lens on the 7D , it's so wide on the 5D that I guess I'll have to readjust my state of mind to use it haha.
Happy the kit lens will fill that spot nicely on the 5D.

I'm having one problem , though the set up is very similar to the 7D I can't quite get it to change focus points with the directional button .
I can't for the life of me figure out how it get this to work threw the viewfinder . I'm going the pdf manual trying to find it but if anyone has the short answer to this I'd really appreciate it !

Moderators: Accidental ban of whole subnet

Hi moderators,

I think you accidentally banned a whole subnet (93.218.* or similar) from your forums.
No login (and even guest access) is possible from my DSL: I'm banned. (With different IPs falling in the mentioned subnet.)
From phone with login and totally different IP: not banned. (As you see by reading my post.)

I didn't even post since January and I'm always polite ;)
It looks like some punk with a dynamic IP was insulting but sadly now I (and many others) get IPs from the subnet he was in.

Thanks for looking into it!

Edit: Using my provider's proxy (and thus getting a different IP) for access from my DSL line also works. So it is definitely a ban of some IPs.

Einstein Setup

I finally ordered the PCB Einstein and CyberSync Commander I've been eying for awhile tonight. I plan on doing a fairly basic setup in my basement as a small studio to play around with lighting. I also have a 580ex II that I'll use in slave mode as a secondary light.

Most (all) of my experience aside from having my speedlight in the hotshoe is natural light.

So what advice can anyone offer to a beginner at off camera lighting?

Thanks, guys! :-)

Digital cameras of the future

Hey guys! It's Friday and I thought we should walk away from all these serious discussions about Canon :) Once in a while we all probably think about how our life and technology will change in the future. How do you guys see the DSLRs of the future, let's say in 20-30 years from now? Which features these cameras can have? Do you think DSLRs will eventually be replaced completely with something else?

Also I'd like to ask people who were engaged in photography 20-30 years ago. What were your thoughts about future SLRs at that time? Have you dreamed about having some specific features in these cameras? Was anything eventually implemented into what we have now?

Nothing serious, please just share your thoughts and dreams about it :) I hope my English makes sense :)

5D2 Refurb Received - Questions

I know what you're thinking... Another poster thinking 2,851 shutter actuations on a body rated for 150k is excessive. But that is the number it came with and based on *most* refurb-owning posters, they seem to come with actuations in the low hundreds. Yes, there are some with 1k and there are some with even more than mine.

Otherwise, it relatively shows little to know signs of wear. Maybe they replaced grips, etc. but the only thing giving away age or usage is the CF card door - the plastic on it is a bit "glossier" than the rest. Like the wear you would see on a keyboard that has been heavily used.

I have a few questions:

1. Can anyone help me determine if the serial number is a recent one?
0852xxxx are the leading digits and the LP-E6 battery has a June 2012 date code stamp, but that doesn't mean anything. The 5D2 I had purchased new in December and returned for a 5D3 had a serial number of 0952xxxx.

2. How does the Canon Direct exchange process work? If they no longer have the 5D2 in stock by the time I return this copy, will I be up the creek without ta paddle? or...

3. How lenient is Canon if I were to order a second body for the purposes of seeing what I get before I request an RMA for this one? My luck, the second one will have even more exposures or signs of wear than this one.

Thank you!

Which would you pick for a wife camera sony nex 6 or eos sl1?

I am torn between keeping my sony nex 6 for the wife or getting her the new sl1 with a 40mm pancake. She just uses auto and wants to shove it in her purse just on occasional outings where lugging my 5d would be overkill. I think the sl1 is more versatile since all my lenses will serve a dual purpose and she like my 60d when I had it. She is just not the type to want larger heavy gear but I thought with either I could start to teach her how to use the pasm modes to control her photo's at times. Does anyone have an opinion? I just dont want to get her the eos if everyone thinks that its much larger and bulkier. I have noone else to ask.

A Camera Walks Into a Bar

This is worth reading if only for the great characterizations of camera manufacturing companies.

The scary part is it suggests how far behind Canon (and Nikon) is in current photographic technology. Professional photographers are beginning to migrate to this -- and Canon could be left in the dust.

Two Bodies/One Software?

I'm tossing around keeping my T1i and maybe adding one of the upcoming Rebels. Maybe the little one with a little prime.
If I do that (or even go with the little prime on my T1i and maybe a 7D II one day) would I be using the same Canon software for both cameras or would I use the software that came with my T1i for the T1i and the new software with the new camera? And, if the latter, would the correct software recognize the right camera?
And my processing software is LR4.
Thanks for any insight into that whole topic.

AFMA – Easy or Not

Okay, another thread had degenerated into like 10 pages of arguments over why Rebels need to have micro-adjust settings. (Actually "degenerated" is a relative term since the thread was pretty much at the bottom of the barrel to begin with, but that's another issue)

Anyway, at least one individual says doing a micro adjustment is easy and can be done on the fly while shooting, simply using any clearly delineated object (crack on a wall, blade of grass). That seems surprising to me, as I read numerous other threads here on the "best" system for adjusting lenses and most seem to require a pretty extensive set up with resolution charts, very bright lighting, rock-solid tripod, etc. etc. There is even a software program that has been promoted by many on this site as an aid to doing micro-adjustments.

Full disclosure here: I've never felt compelled to do any adjustment on my 7D. Maybe I'm just lucky with lenses. Maybe because I usually stop down. Maybe because I'm usually shooting with my 15-85, or my 70-300 L or 100-400 L and the depth of field compensates for any small differences in focusing plane. Maybe because the smaller sensor offers better apparent depth of field. Maybe because I've gotten pretty good at using Photoshop to increase apparent sharpness. Or maybe I'm just damn good.

So, which is it? Easy to do on the fly or four hours of my life I'll never get back setting up lights, tripod, camera, charts?

Hey Neuro...

That is a great side by side photo comparison of your 1Dx and your 7D with battery grip attached on your TDP & Flikr pages. I don't think I've ever seen the 2 together like that and it's an interesting glimpse for those of us 7D owners who (a. can't afford a 1Dx & b. don't have a camera store nearby to check the beast out). I just keep looking at the two for differences knowing how much the 7D weighs and feels, etc. I bet the 1Dx is quite a handful. That's pretty cool, thanx.

Canon 24-70 f/2.8L mkii Focus Shift

HI All,

I have just received my (2nd copy) Canon 24-70 f/2.8 mk II. Being a faithful CR follower and reading http://www.canonrumors.com/tech-articles/how-to-test-a-lens/ I begain from the top and followed ever step I could as best as I could. I also have Reikan Focal and ran through every testing option there was available. What I have found suprised me to the point I originally thought I had received the dreaded bad copy.

There is a definite focus shift on the 24-70 mk II. I have found that from f4 to f5.6 it starts to back focus severely -5 afma vs +3 afma for f2.8 to f4 and +3 afma f5.8 on.

I am surprised there is not more information already out there on this.
I Found this on a competing forum http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1177402 very similar findings

I understand through research you can hold the DOF button down to get around this issue? But would that reduce effectiveness of the f2.8 cross focus points?

After a quick search it appears the Tamron 24-70 has a very similar focus shift issue.
http://www.lenstip.com/340.5-Lens_review-Tamron_SP_24-70_mm_f_2.8_Di_VC_USD_Chromatic_and_spherical_aberration.html

Does anyone have any advice? At this point I don't know what to do?

Thank you for your time.

small primes to go with SL1?

I'm actually pretty excited about the announcement of the SL1. price-wise and function-wise it seems very competitive against m4/3 cameras which I've been considering for a while for a back-up/casual camera.

the weird thing to me though, is it seems that there's a mismatch now between body and lens. the shorty-forty (40mm f/2.8) pancake lens seems to be a great physical fit for the body, but I'm not at all a fan of the 64mm-equivalent focal length that it creates. I'd love to have a 35mm equivalent pancake prime to go with a SL1, but does such a thing exist? I'm aware that Sigma produces a DX 30mm f/1.4, but even that just gives you a 50mm-equivalent, which I hate. I have a Canon 50mm f/1.4 on my 5DII, and while I love the lens for many things, I loathe it as a general-purpose walk-around lens. I enjoy shooting architecture and landscape, so the 24 to 35 range is much more my cup of tea.

it seems silly to buy a tiny, compact, reasonably-priced camera to walk around with, and then have to mount a honking 15mm f/2.8 Zeiss lens on it to get the right focal length. am I missing something? any suggestions? do we think Canon is going to start producing EF-S pancake primes to follow onto the shorty forty, or was that a one-off?

Old gear on offer, please help me decide

After the disappointing Canon announcements I'm looking to invest my cash not in a new but an older Canon.

What I got offered:

EOS 1Ds MKII
EOS 5D MKII modified for Infrared without Low pass filter but plenty of lens filters to allow adaption
EOS 1D MKIII

I use since 3 years my EOS 60D and initially wanted to have a second body with APSC, minimum X0D comfort and a clean ISO for lowlight situations as high as possible. Looks like I will have to wait some longer for the 70D announcement and even if they announce it I would not buy it soon because I want to wait for the 7d MKII to be announced to decide which one is the better choice (fearing that the 7D MKII might be the last high quality APSC offering from Canon ) So I can invest a little now and save for the APSC body later this year presumably Winter 2013.

Still I need a second body right soon so I checked for the above mentioned alternatives. The modified 5DMK2 and the 1DS MKII are almost same price, the 1d MKIII is just half of that.

I used to have a 5D which is no longer available to me but I still have a complete lens line up for the APSC and the full format.

The last time I shot with my own EOS 1 was half a live ago in the analog age.
What I do not know:
How expensive is it to change a low pass filter. Is a used and modified 5D MKII worth to be compared with a used 1Ds MKII? (Assuming both are in good conditions)

I have not used APSH sensor format (last time to use this format was with my Canon APS IX). I know that EFS lenses will not cover the complete sensor but can EFS lenses be attached to the EOS 1d MKIII or will the mirror slap against the lens?

On paper I know that the 5DMKII has a much higher ISO range and a higher resolution than the 1Ds MKII but how is it with noise? The large pixels of the 1Ds MKII should be helpful?

I know about the behavior of the 5D MKII but not about the 1Ds MKII or 1D MKIII. Do they come with AFMA?

Finally lenses:
My usual battle order when leaving the primes at home was
Tokina 11-15 2.8
Canon 17-55 2.8
Sigma 50-150 2.8
Sigma 120-300 2.8

If I change to APSH/Full Format + the 60D as the backup body it would be
Canon 17-35 2.8
Canon 28-70 2.8
Sigma 120-300 2.8
Sigma 14mm 3.5

That means more L glasses, less stabilization, more weight and a little less flexibility in the ultra-wide area
Worth the effort?

Regards

Hello everybody,

I think that everyone was at least once surprised with the difference of a product review (mainly lenses)
that was done by different reviewers.

So that pushed me to make this Poll, to see the users opinion and maybe the credibility of the reviewers.

Lets have some FUN ;)
