Focus confirmation on Samyang lens?

Hello!
I own both Samyang 14mm f/2.8 and 35mm f/1.4 and really love these lens! However, I got to say that I do miss having the focus confirmation. While looking for a way to enable it on these lens, I saw that a few people literally glued AF-confirm chips to the very lens. Even though it seems to work well, I got to say that I don't like that much the idea of gluing things to the lens. Moreover, I am not a very manual guy, so I don't really trust myself with superglue near my glass! :o
Does anyone knows of another way of being able to use focus confirmation with manual focus lens? If not, have anybody already glued a chip to a lens? Is it safe? Does it really work?
Thanks a lot for the help!

5D2 refurb or new 7D as backup to 5D3?

Note: I prefer feedback from those who have owned (or still own) a 5D2, 7D and 5D3. Thank you.

Background: I own a 5D3 and was looking for a backup body as my 20D is a joke for a backup. I am a Canon pro-sumer of eight years, turning part-time pro shooting family and couples portraits, events and looking to do weddings. I also take pictures of my own family and kids playing sports.

My dilemma, which was resolved with the 5D3 is that I am a stickler for tack-sharp (using more than just the center AF point) pictures, but also demand a good IQ and a low-noise seeker.

So I just received a 5D2 refurb. from Canon Direct with 2,815 shutter actuations on it. Judging by the date stamp on the main battery and the serial number, I am going to deduce that its a early to mid 2012 copy.

The battery charger also looks to be a slightly older one with less refined looking labels/notations on it than the one that came with the new 5D2 I purchased in late December, but had returned, which looked identical to the one that came with my 5D3.

One thing that bugs me is the SET button on the back makes a slapping noise sometimes when you push it. I forget if the previous 5D2 I used did same. My 5D3 and 20D aren't like this.

If I return it for an exchange, I risk them not having one in stock when this gets back to them, I gather.

I know I will need a back-up body if I'm being paid for a shoot. One that will produce great image quality, but I also want good AF. The caveat is that once I shoot weddings or other indoor lower-lit events, I am wondering if the 7D is sufficient. David Ziser seems to think so... http://bit.ly/9xEebV

But I am concerned about the noise of the images and lack of another FF backup body. I realize if its just a backup at say a wedding, the crop is "good enough" and I could mount my widest lenses to it for wide-angle shots in a pinch.

For sports and nature though - I am missing the reach of my 20D.

Oh, and I also want a camera that has good IQ, but isn't as expensive as my 5D3 to take with me on family trips/vacations.

Any thoughts/feedback? Thanks. I am tempted to just purchase a brand new 7D instead to go along with my 5D3. Once you add sales tax to the Canon Direct purchases, I could save ~$300-400 if I got a new 7D.

Thanks

24mm ts-e with a polarizer?

I was lucky enough to acquire a 24mm ts-e for landscape work prior to a trip to Utah next month. I am curious if anyone has had good luck with a screw on polarizer for this lens or is the lens too wide to get nice results. If you have had good luck, what polarizer do you recommend? Any other advice for this lens is appreciated. Thanks

Canon 400D (Digital Rebel XTi): Sell, or keep it?

So, I now have a Sony Nex with a 16-50mm zoom and a 30mm f/2.8 prime as a small-size quality alternative to the 5DMkII and 7D. With an FD adapter I can mount (amongst other old Canon lenses) a Canon 70-210mm F/4.

Left in my collection of kit is a 400D body (with firmware hack: http://code.google.com/p/400plus/) and a very new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II, and EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II.

I cannot really make up my mind on what to do with this kit I've sitting around - sell it or keep it? Not sure If I will find a need to use it again. I guess the 400D is not worth much money these days, and selling the two lenses I mentioned means a loss so I'm not comfortable with that.

What would you do? Keep this stuff around or get rid of it?

MELVILLE, N.Y., March 21, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to introduce a new flagship model to its popular EOS Rebel line, the EOS Rebel T5i Digital SLR Camera. The incredible image quality and performance starts with an 18 megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and Canon’s superb DIGIC 5 Image Processor. Combined with an extensive ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600 in H mode), the EOS Rebel T5i boasts crisp, detailed images, even in low-light conditions. With a continuous shooting speed of up to 5.0 frames per second (fps) united with 9 all cross-type AF focus points, the new EOS Rebel T5i allows photographers the opportunity to shoot with ease, even in challenging shooting situations.

When shooting in Live View mode, the Hybrid CMOS AF system enables speedy and accurate autofocus for photos and video. Coupled with Canon’s new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, available in the standard kit lens bundle, the EOS Rebel T5i takes full advantage of the Stepping Motor (STM) technology, which allows the lens to smoothly and silently focus on the subject whether it is moving or standing still. When combined with the camera’s high-resolution Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II and intuitive touch controls, the EOS Rebel T5i stands as Canon’s most “consumer-friendly” DSLR.

“Built to make advanced photography creative and fun, the EOS Rebel T5i Digital SLR Camera gives users exceptional image quality and fast, intuitive operation along with creative functions to help advance photographic expression,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A.

Expand Your Creativity with New Advanced Features

The EOS Rebel T5i provides amateur and advanced photographers looking to hone their creative and technical skills with a range of features that allow for crisp, clear images.

Whether it is adding saturation to a vivid landscape or applying a unique, vintage touch to a portrait, users who want to express their creativity can experiment with different effects and settings, composing a shot, by using one of Canon’s seven Creative Filters. When the Creative Filters are applied in Live View, users can preview the filter on the vari-angle three inch LCD touch screen without having to shoot the image first. Effects such as ArtBold, Water Painting, Grainy Black and White, Soft Focus, Toy Camera, Fish-Eye and Miniature let users pick and choose how to best express their creative vision before or after the image is captured.

The EOS Rebel T5i features advanced shooting modes to take creative imaging even further. When using one of the advanced shooting modes such as Handheld Night Scene, HDR Backlight Control or Multi-Shot Noise Reduction, multiple images are taken and combined within the camera to help create the best quality image based off of the shots taken. Providing quick and easy accessibility, a new mode dial with Scene modes has been included, allowing users the flexibility to select the subject matter while the camera determines the optimal settings.

Enhanced EOS Full HD Movie Mode

The EOS Rebel T5i offers easy-to-use professional video capture. When users switch to EOS Full HD Movie mode, the EOS Rebel T5i offers the ability to shoot in 1080p Full HD video in a number of recording sizes and frame rates. With Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF System and Movie Servo AF, the camera provides continuous AF for focus tracking of moving subjects by helping to reduce the camera’s need to “hunt”, resulting in a quick and smooth continuous AF. While shooting with one of Canon’s Stepping Motor (STM) lenses, such as the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, the camera will only capture the stereo sound of the scene being recorded. For added flexibility, the EOS Rebel T5i also features a built-in stereo microphone with manual audio level adjustment to enhance sound quality.

Expanded Lineup of STM Lenses

Canon is expanding the lineup of STM lenses by adding one new lens, which now gives users three choices that will allow for the capture of stunning images and video with the EOS Rebel T5i – the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM and the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens offers high magnification in a compact and lightweight EF-S standard zoom lens with an optical image stabilizer for up to four equivalent stops for shake correction. When paired with the Hybrid CMOS AF, it allows for smooth and quiet, continuous AF for photo and video capturing – making it the perfect combination for preserving those once in a lifetime moments.

Availability

The EOS Rebel T5i Digital SLR camera is scheduled to be available in April for an estimated retail price of $749.99 for the body alone; $899.99 bundled with an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens kit, and $1,099.00 with the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens kit.

The new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens also is also scheduled to be available separately in April at an estimated retail price of $249.99

Best lens from my set for nightclubs?

Hi all,

If I could take a single lens to do nightclub photography from the following, what you recommend? I have the 5D3. The intention is for some close-up shots of people, some of the DJ and some crowd shots. I may or may not take a flash.

 • 24mm f/1.4L II
 • 35mm f/1.4L
 • 24-105 f/4L

My feeling is that the 24-105 is far too slow, but the zoom gives me way more options. I use the 35 a lot, but it might not be wide enough for crowd shots, and it's also not weather sealed (I am paranoid about people spilling drinks on my camera); the 24 is weather sealed and so should hold up OK if someone accidentally spills a drink on me.

All of these considerations suggest the 24.

Thoughts welcome!

My first B&W film

So recently got a Mamiya RB67 Pro-S film camera, and started going a little cray :) Man, scanning film is expensive! These first 4 were all from a long expired roll of T-Max B&W film that came with the camera since I was new to using it, and didn't want to waste a good roll if I totally screwed up.

700D and 100D it is!

Thanks to www.canon.com.au

Edit: having a read through the 'features' (there's no specs for now):
both 18MP
both 9pt AF (no idea about cross-type), with video AF
both Digic 5
Both vari-angle LCD

I don't see what's between them except maybe build quality. But looking at the lensmounts, the bodies are tiny. And there's some funky new grippy stuff too.

Tokina 16-28mm FX Focusing Issue with 5D3

I have had this lens for about a month and have been enjoying it. However, tonight I noticed when I went outside to take some shots that it didn't seem to be locking focus on the left hand side. Even if I placed an objected toward the left side of where I was aiming, making sure that the object was closer to the lens than anything on the right side of the view finder, it still seemed reluctant to grab focus toward the left.

I put my 5D3 in a different focusing mode, eight-point selection to the far left, and it managed to lock on okay then. However, once in awhile the camera would seem to do a "freeze lock" and even if I took my finger off the shutter, I could immediately press down again and take a picture without the lens regaining focus.

I tried to replicate this issue on my 5D2, but I can't seem to reproduce it. Everything seems to work normally.

When compared to my 24-105L on my 5D3, aiming directly at the edge of a table, the 24-105 picks up the table in a completely perfect focused line in the view finder. The Tokina 16-28 only picks up the right side of the edge of the table. Again, this doesn't seem to be an issue with the 5D2; the lens worked fine.

I have used FoCal to calibrate the lens on both the 5D2 and 5D3. My adjustments with the 5D3 were -11 for the wide end, and +3 for the telephoto end.

Do you guys think this is a calibration issue, or do you think I should return this copy of the lens and see if I can get another?

Shooting in the rain w/ our new model/singer Kirin. (Shot on T3I)

Hey whats up guys! I shot this music video at night in the rain w/ our new music artist & wanted to get some input!
Whole video was shot on my canon T3I w/ my 35MM F/2 and 17-40mm L F/4!
